Here, 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoropentan-1-al was prepared by oxidizing 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoropentan-1-ol under standard conditions (a dichloromethane solution was prepared by reacting with pyridinium dichromate or else by a TEMPO oxidation [see, for example,v]-the dichloromethane solution of the 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoropentan-1-al was used directly in the Wittig reaction owing to the low boiling point). A Swern oxidation of pentafluoropentanol is problematic [vi].
