Psychotic relapses were evaluated using items from the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. The data were analysed using multiple logistic regression. Results 29.2% of the patients presented at least one psychotic relapse. High-EOI and MDE were predictors of psychotic relapses. Discussion Our findings expand the knowledge about the cultural specificity of EOI and the role of depression in psychotic relapse. Implications for practice Family nursing interventions and the appropriate treatment of MDE must be considered in the care of FEP patients.

Sirtuin 6 ameliorates alcohol-induced liver injury by reducing endoplasmic reticulum stress in mice

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) occurs as a result of chronic and excessive alcohol consumption. It encompasses a wide spectrum of chronic liver abnormalities that range from steatosis to alcoholic hepatitis, progressive fibrosis and cirrhosis. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress induced by ethanol metabolism in hepatocytes has been established as an important contributor to the pathogenesis of ALD. However, whether SIRT6 exerts regulatory effects on ethanol-induced ER stress and contributes to the pathogenesis of ALD is unclear. In this study, we developed and characterized Sirt6 hepatocyte-specific knockout and transgenic mouse models that were treated with chronic-plus-binge ethanol feeding. We observed that hepatic Sirt6 deficiency led to exacerbated ethanol-induced liver injury and aggravated hepatic ER stress. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) treatment remarkably attenuated ethanol-induced ER stress and ameliorated ALD pathologies caused by Sirt6 ablation. Reciprocally, SIRT6 hepatocyte-specific transgenic mice exhibited reduced ER stress and ameliorated liver injury caused by ethanol exposure. Consistently, knockdown of Sirt6 elevated the expression of ER stress related genes in primary hepatocytes treated with ethanol, whereas overexpression of SIRT6 reduced their expression, indicating SIRT6 regulates ethanol-induced hepatic ER stress in a cell autonomous manner. Collectively, our results suggest that SIRT6 is a positive regulator of ethanol-induced ER stress in the liver and protects against ALD by relieving ER stress. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. Influence of Higher Alcohol Additives in Methanol-Gasoline Blends on the Performance and Emissions of an Unmodified Automotive SI Engine: A Review

More stringent emission norms are implemented all over the world to protect the environment from vehicular pollution. Biofuels are one of the best alternative solutions to reduce cost and environmental pollution. Among many alternate fuels, alcohol is a leading fuel used in automotive spark-ignition engines in pure or blended form. The capability of methanol to substitute gasoline has been known for a long time. This paper aims to systematically review methanol-gasoline blend with higher alcohol additives (ternary blends) as a transportation fuel in unmodified automotive spark-ignition engines. This review summarizes the previous research in methanol-gasoline blends with and without additives on spark-ignition engines’ performance and emission characteristics. Many researchers found that methanol-gasoline blended fuels improve engine performance and emissions. Generally, alcohols burn very effectively and produce only fewer emissions compared to gasoline. Still, lower alcohol may cause some problems such as increased specific fuel consumption, phase separation and corrosion. These problems are further optimized using higher alcohol additives through improved energy content, kinematic viscosity, corrosion resistance, water tolerance and phase stability. Several research studies have been carried out in the past years, which focused mainly on single alcohol blended fuels for spark-ignition engines. Thus, a comprehensive survey of performance, combustion and emission characteristics of methanol-gasoline blended fuel with higher alcohol additives is necessary to show the potential of ternary blends in automotive engines.

Artificial intelligence in healthcare sector endures a largest share in non-invasive and point-of-care disease diagnosis by interfacing human behaviour through wearable pathway. In a view to develop sensing element for wearables, the concept of free standing poly-1-lactic acid (PLLA)/V2O5 nanosheets using sacrificial layer – (poly vinyl alcohol- PVA)method has been proposed in this work and the studies on ammonia (NH3) sensing has been briefly discussed. In a view to enhance the sensing performance of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) film, surface modified PLLA substrates using nanoimprint lithography (NIL) have been implemented. The V+5 stoichiometry of the free standing PLLA/V2O5 films were confirmed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), it was observed that the patterned structure of about similar to 250 nm diameter was uniformly distributed on the surface of PLLA/V2O5 film. The chemiresistive sensing studies proved that the sensor response of V2O5 films on patterned PLLA substrate exhibited enhanced response about similar to 17 towards 75 ppm than the V2O5 film on unpatterned PLLA substrate. We believe that this strategy of patterned free standing PLLA/V2O5 nanosheets will help in fabricating the wearable sensors with better sensing performance.

Synthesis and electrochemical properties of V(2)O(5)(center dot)nH(2)O compound with reduced graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol film as the free-standing cathode for coin-typed aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Recently aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have been widely studied on the aspects of electrode materials and electrolytes, but it is still far from practical application. The limitation of AZIBs is that it is difficult to have both high specific capacity and good cycle stability. Herein, a free-standing cathode V(2)O(5)(center dot)nH(2)O/reduced graphene oxide-polyvinyl alcohol (denoted as V(2)O(5)(center dot)nH(2)O/rGO-PVA) film was synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method and vacuum filtration. As the cathode for the coin-typed AZIBs, the V(2)O(5)(center dot)nH(2)O/rGO-PVA film cathode delivers the ultrahigh capacity of 553 mA h g(-1) at the current density of 0.1 A g(-1). And the capacity is 194 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), after 300 cycles, it still remains 152 mA h g(-1). At the power density of 183 W.kg(-1), the high energy density is calculated as 354 Wh.kg(-1) based on the mass of the cathode. The energy storage mechanism was studied by some ex-situ characterizations as well. This work not only proposes a strategy for the synthesis of V(2)O(5)(center dot)nH(2)O/rGO-PVA film, but also demonstrates that the as-obtained free-standing cathode is beneficial to the assembly of coin-typed AZIBs and exhibits excellent electrochemical performance.

One-year Follow-Up Results with Hydrogel Implant in Therapy of Hallux Rigidus: Case Series with 44 Patients

Background The Cartiva implant (CI) is being increasingly used in the surgical therapy of hallux rigidus. Despite a growing number of studies, numerous questions regarding patient selection remain unanswered. Patients and Methods As part of a retrospective case series with prospective follow-up (average follow-up period: 12 months), a total of 44 patients (male/female = 16/28; mean age at the time of surgery: 55.4 years) with 44 CI were analysed (VAS, EFAS-, AOFAS-score). Using a correlation analysis and a machine learning algorithm, risk factors for therapy failure were investigated. Results The overall survival rate of the CI was 93% at 12 months. The VAS, EFAS and AOFAS scores showed a significant improvement in comparison to the preoperative condition. The mobility of the metatarsophalangeal joint showed no increase. Patients with a medium osteoarthritis grade and a medium level of clinical restraint showed the greatest improvement in relation to their preoperative condition. Conclusion The CI can be seen as an effective therapy for hallux rigidus. Nonetheless, realistic patient expectations must be communicated.

Improving the gasoline properties by blending butanol-Al2O3 to optimize the engine performance and reduce air pollution

In this study, butanol, as an oxygenate additive and alumina as a nano metal particle, was mixed with pure gasoline. Different blends were tested, and operational tests were done on an engine with different engine speeds. Those additives were added to decrease air pollution due to the higher oxygen content of butanol, which can make combustion more complete, and nano metal additive, which has suitable potential to enhance engine performance, especially Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC). The results indicate that adding the additives mentioned above to the pure gasoline has led to an increase the engine performance. In this regard, the engine power has increased by 10% by adding alumina. Moreover, combining the base gasoline with additives enhances CO2 and reduces NOx and emissions of hydrocarbons. In this research, carbon monoxide was diminished by adding alcohol up to 50% in some conditions, and the emitted hydrocarbons through the atmosphere were declined by up to 20%. Moreover, optimization results showed that higher optimization is achieved when 5% of butanol and 1 g of alumina are used. Under these conditions, the results of CO, CO2, NOx and HC emissions were 1.099, 4.699, 113.9 and 77.5 ppm, respectively. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Smoking cessation in head and neck cancer patients: Factors influencing successes and failures

Introduction This study investigated the smoking behaviours and cessation rates of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients, and their barriers and facilitators to cessation. Method The study used a mixed methods, sequential explanatory design. The quantitative data were collected at baseline (around time of cancer diagnosis) via a survey prior to commencement of treatment. Participants identified as current smokers at baseline were then followed up to determine their smoking status after treatment and asked to participate in one-on-one, semi-structured interviews. Results Sixty-four participants with HNC were recruited, with 29 classified as current smokers. The 7-day point prevalence cessation rate for current smokers was 72% at 1-month follow-up, and 67% at 3 months, while continuous smoking cessation was 54% at 1 month, and 42% at 3 months. Participants who continued smoking were found to consume more alcohol (P = 0.032), be in a lower stage of change (pre-contemplation or contemplation stages of the transtheoretical model) at baseline (P = 0.012) and be less confident in being able to cease smoking (P = 0.004). Qualitative analysis revealed 5 key themes associated with smoking cessation: the teachable moment of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, willpower and cessation aids, psychosocial environment, relationship with alcohol and marijuana, and health knowledge and beliefs surrounding smoking and cancer. Conclusions This study demonstrates that the majority of HNC patients achieve smoking cessation, but relapses are common. Cessation programmes should be developed that are comprehensive, sustained and address factors such as alcohol, marijuana and depression.
