Novel carbon fibers synthesis, plasma functionalization, and application to polymer composites

PAN copolymers were synthesized via a novel technique, atom transfer radical polymerization (AMP), with the activator generated by electron transfer method (AGET). Carbon fibers (CF) were synthesized at low carbonization temperatures from the novel PAN precursor. Plasma treatment in an oxygen environment at a low pressure of 40 Pa was carried out for 5 minutes on the CF at 100 and 200 W plasma power. The morphology and structure of the CF changed after plasma functionalization, as evident from SEM analysis and Raman spectroscopy. The formation of functional groups like alcohols, carbonyl, and carboxylic on the surface of CF was confirmed with the aid of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The wetting test confirmed the higher adhesion of the plasma functionalized CF with the epoxy matrix. Single fiber strength test revealed that plasma functionalized CF retained around 98% of their original tensile strength. Composites were fabricated from the pristine, and the plasma functionalized CF in 1 and 3% by weight with epoxy matrix. The surface-modified CF composites depicted improved tensile (23.4%), tribology (33.62%), and surface hardness (11.4%) properties compared to the composites fabricated from pristine CF.

Effect of High-Dose Baclofen on Agitation-Related Events Among Patients With Unhealthy Alcohol Use Receiving Mechanical Ventilation A Randomized Clinical Trial

IMPORTANCE Unhealthy alcohol use can lead to agitation in the intensive care unit (ICU). OBJECTIVE To assess whether high-dose baclofen reduces agitation-related events compared with placebo in patients with unhealthy alcohol use receiving mechanical ventilation. DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS This phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial conducted in 18 ICUs in France recruited adults receiving mechanical ventilation who met criteria for unhealthy alcohol use. Patients were enrolled from June 2016 to February 2018; the last follow-up was in May 2019. INTERVENTIONS Baclofen (n = 159), adjusted from 50 to 150 mg per day based on estimated glomerular filtration rate, or placebo (n = 155) during mechanical ventilation up to a maximum of 15 days before gradual dose reduction over 3 to 6 days. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary end point was the percentage of patients with at least 1 agitation-related event over the treatment period. Secondary outcomes included duration of mechanical ventilation, length of ICU stay, and 28-day mortality. RESULTS Among 314 patients who were randomized (mean age, 57 years; 60 [17.2%] women), 313 (99.7%) completed the trial. There was a statistically significant decrease in the percentage of patients who experienced at least 1 agitation-related event in the baclofen group vs the placebo group (31 [19.7%] vs 46 [29.7%]; difference, -9.93%[95% CI, -19.45% to -0.42%]; adjusted odds ratio, 0.59 [95% CI, 0.35-0.99]). Of 18 prespecified secondary end points, 14 were not significantly different. Compared with the placebo group, the baclofen group had a significantly longer median length of mechanical ventilation (9 vs 8 days; difference, 2.00 [95% CI, 0.00-3.00]; hazard ratio [HR] for extubation, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.60-0.97]) and stay in the ICU (14 vs 11 days; difference, 2.00 [95% CI, 0.00-4.00]; HR for discharge, 0.70 [95% CI, 0.54-0.90]). At 28 days, there was no significant difference in mortality in the baclofen vs placebo group (25.3% vs 21.6%; adjusted odds ratio, 1.24 [95% CI, 0.72-2.13]). Delayed awakening (no eye opening at 72 hours after cessation of sedatives and analgesics) occurred in 14 patients (8.9%) in the baclofen group vs 3 (1.9%) in the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Among patients with unhealthy alcohol use receiving mechanical ventilation, treatment with high-dose baclofen, compared with placebo, resulted in a statistically significant reduction in agitation-related events. However, considering the modest effect and the totality of findings for the secondary end points and adverse events, further research is needed to determine the possible role of baclofen in this setting and to potentially optimize dosing.

Red yeast rice prevents chronic alcohol-induced liver disease by attenuating oxidative stress and inflammatory response in mice

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is characterized by dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, steatohepatitis, edema, necrosis, etc. Studies have reported that some dietary nutrition factors have beneficial effects in improving ALD. Red yeast rice (RYR), a traditional herbal supplement, has been confirmed to lower cholesterol mainly due to its component monacolin K. However, the effect of RYR on ALD has not been investigated. In this study, mice were supplemented with a daily oral gavage of 4 g/kg 50% ethanol for 8 weeks to induce a chronic ALD. RYR (150 mg kg(-1) day(-1)) was supplied to ALD mice in treatment group. The results showed that RYR supplementation significantly attenuated hyperlipidemia, elevated circulating inflammatory cytokines, hepatic structural damage, and oxidative stress in mice supplemented with alcohol with no effects on body weight. Moreover, RYR significantly suppressed alcohol-induced hepatic NF-kappa B activation and apoptosis. Our results suggest that RYR is capable of preventing ALD mainly by attenuating hepatic oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Practical applications RYR was known for cholesterol-lowering effect through its main component monacolin K. The current study revealed that RYR was capable of ameliorating ALD, which is characterized by profound dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, steatohepatitis, edema, etc. Our results indicated that the protective effect of RYR on ALD is largely achieved by regulating lipid metabolism, and closely related to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of RYR. This study provides research foundation for the development of RYR-related food or pharmaceutical products, especially targeting for ALD.

Fast-Track Liver Transplantation: Six-year Prospective Cohort Study with an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Protocol

Introduction Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has been shown to facilitate discharge, decrease length of stay, improve outcomes and reduce costs. We used this concept to design a comprehensive fast-track pathway (OR-to-discharge) before starting our liver transplant activity and then applied this protocol prospectively to every patient undergoing liver transplantation at our institution, monitoring the results periodically. We now report our first six years results. Patients and methods Prospective cohort study of all the liver transplants performed at our institution for the first six years. Balanced general anesthesia, fluid restriction, thromboelastometry, inferior vena cava preservation and temporary portocaval shunt were strategies common to all cases. Standard immunosuppression administered included steroids, tacrolimus (delayed in the setting of renal impairment, with basiliximab induction added) and mycophenolate mofetil. Tacrolimus dosing was adjusted using a Bayesian estimation methodology. Oral intake and ambulation were started early. Results A total of 240 transplants were performed in 236 patients (191 male/45 female) over 74 months, mean age 56.3 +/- 9.6 years, raw MELD score 15.5 +/- 7.7. Predominant etiologies were alcohol (n = 136) and HCV (n = 82), with hepatocellular carcinoma present in 129 (54.7%). Nine patients received combined liver and kidney transplants. The mean operating time was 315 +/- 64 min with cold ischemia times of 279 +/- 88 min. Thirty-one patients (13.1%) were transfused in the OR (2.4 +/- 1.2 units of PRBC). Extubation was immediate (< 30 min) in all but four patients. Median ICU length of stay was 12.7 hours, and median post-transplant hospital stay was 4 days (2-76) with 30 patients (13.8%) going home by day 2, 87 (39.9%) by day 3, and 133 (61%) by day 4, defining our fast-track group. Thirty-day-readmission rate (34.9%) was significantly lower (28.6% vs. 44.7% p=0.015) in the fast-track group. Patient survival was 86.8% at 1 year and 78.6% at five years. Conclusion Fast-Tracking of Liver Transplant patients is feasible and can be applied as the standard of care If you’re interested in learning more about 1606-85-5. The application of headspace gas chromatographic method for the determination of ethyl alcohol in craft beers, wines and soft drinks

The increasing interest of consumers in the still-developing craft beer market and the strict tax-related legal regulations concerning alcoholic beverages require precise methods for quality control. Determination of ethyl alcohol concentration was performed in 167 samples of alcoholic beverages (craft beers, soft drinks, wines, and cider). We applied headspace gas chromatography using a dual column/dual flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID/FID), a technique routinely used in forensic toxicology. The method was linear in range, from 0.01 to 20.0%, with a coefficient of determination of 0.999 (R2). The limit of quantification was 0.01%; the detection limit was 0.003%. Furthermore, very good validation parameters were achieved (precision and accuracy below 5%). The samples were analyzed for compliance with EU standards and recommendations of The Beer Judge Certification Program. Moreover, the content of trace quantities of volatile compounds and fusel alcohols (1-propanol, 2-propanol, acetone, and acetaldehyde) was found in the majority of alcoholic beverages.

Influence of diethyl ether on engine performance and emissions characteristics of blends of butanol, pentanol or biodiesel (neem oil methyl ester) in a single cylinder diesel engine

Biodiesel has become a promising alternative biofuel that exhibits problems like high cost of feedstock, poor atomisation due to high viscosity, stability issues, poor flow properties and high NOx emissions as compared to conventional diesel. Alcohols have recently drawn much attention as a low cost biofuel that, exhibit problems like low cetane number and miscibility issues. Addition of fuel additives, for example, diethyl ether (DEE), may be effective to overcome the problems with biodiesel or alcohols. In this work, the influence of DEE on engine performance and emissions were investigated for diesel/biodiesel blends, diesel/butanol blends or diesel/pentanol blends. Fuel blends of biodiesel (B20), butanol (BU20), pentanol (PN20), biodiesel with DEE (B20D10), butanol with DEE (BU20D10) and pentanol with DEE (PN20D10) were prepared. Experiments were conducted on a single cylinder diesel engine for varying load conditions at constant speed. Engine performance and emission characteristics were determined and compared.

Fingerprint of aroma-active compounds and odor activity values in a traditional Moroccan fermented butter Smen using GC-MS-Olfactometry

Smen is a fermented Moroccan butter highly regarded for its unique flavor characteristics. For the first time, this study aimed to evaluate the suitability and complementary performance of purge-and-trap extraction (PTE) and solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) extraction methods prior to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O) in order to characterize key compounds in Smen. According to the representativeness tests, both SAFE and PTE aromatic extracts gave satisfactory similarity and intensity scores and were representative aromatic extracts, being similar to the Smen reference odor. Thirty-four volatile compounds were identified in Smen including acids, alcohols, esters, and ketones. Aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) was applied to characterize potent odorants, and odor activity values (OAVs) were calculated to authenticate these compounds. Twenty-two and nineteen aroma-active compounds were revealed by SAFE and PTE methods, respectively, with flavor dilution (FD) factors ranging from 4 to 4096, and OAVs between 1 and 3359. Ethyl butanoate, ethyl lactate, ethyl hexanoate, butanoic acid, and hexanoic acid were the main potent odorants in Smen, producing fruity-rose, creamy-whey, overripe fruit, ripened cheese, and rancid buttery/soapy odors, respectively. Therefore, SAFE and PTE methods were not only representative, but also complementary for elucidating potent aroma compounds of Smen.

Kidney Function After Liver Transplantation in a Single Center

Background: Renal dysfunction in the peri-transplant period appears to complicate both short- and long-term outcome of liver transplantation (LT). The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of selected clinical features in the peri-liver transplant period, as well calcineurin inhibitor, particularly tacrolimus given after LT, on kidney function in a single liver transplant center’s experience. Material/Methods: A total 125 consecutive liver-grafted individuals (82 M, 43 F), mean age 50 +/- 13 y (with alcohol-related liver dis- ease in 48 (38%) patients) were included into the study. Their clinical data were collected in the database until 46 months of follow-up, and the Python packages Pandas (version 0.22.0) and scikit-learn (version 0.21.3) were used for data analysis. Results: More advanced liver disease as judged by Child-Pugh class and MELD score differed significantly patients with preserved (serum creatinine SCr <1.5 mg/dL) and impaired (SCr >= 1.5 mg/dL) kidney function before LT. Older age and higher SCr pre-LT were associated with higher levels of SCr after LT in 2 time-points. SCr before LT was correlated with delta SCr for the highest and last recorded value (P<0.0001). Higher amounts of transfused colloids during surgery were associated with increased delta SCr for the highest value (P=0.019) after grafting in logistic regression analysis. There were no associations between SCr after LT and duration of anhepatic phase, urine output <= 100 mL/h, or post-reperfusion syndrome during transplantation (all P>0.05). There were no associations between SCr after LT and tacrolimus trough levels in analyses of correlations and linear regression analyses (all P>0.05). Conclusions: We found that pretransplant serum creatinine was the only factor affecting kidney function after LT in our liver transplant center. The restricted fluid policy was safe and effective in terms of long-term renal function. The role of kidney-saving immunosuppressive protocols in preserving renal function long-term after LT was also confirmed.

Facile electrolytic synthesis of Pt and carbon quantum dots coloaded multiwall carbon nanotube as highly efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution and ethanol oxidation

Designing high-performance Pt-based catalysts with low catalysts cost is still a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate a facile electrolysis-solvothermal technique for making Pt and carbon quantum dots coloaded multiwall carbon nanotube (Pt-CQDs/MWCNT) catalyst with the assistant of electric field. Despite of the ultralow Pt amount (0.81 wt%) for the optimized Pt-CQDs/MWCNT catalyst, it exhibits ultrahigh electroactivity and durability toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The mass activities of the catalyst for HER and EOR can be achieved to 4889.7 mA/mg (-40 mV) and 4917 mA mg; 1Pt (forward peak), which are 8.1 times and 5.6 times more active than those of commercial Pt/C respectively. The characterization results reveal that Pt nanpparticles (Pt NPs) with intrinsic structure play the key role in excellent catalytic performance for HER and EOR. CQDs not only support abundant anchoring points for fixation and dispersion of Pt NPs, but also construct 3D conductive network with MWCNT supporter for improving the catalytic performance.

One-step complexed preparation of nitrogen and Cu co-doped oxidative active carbon catalysts Cu-N/OAC for furfural selective hydrogenation with high yield

A facile procedure for preparing copper and nitrogen co-doped active carbon (Cu-N/OAC) by one-step complexed was reported and applied in liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural (FAL). The facile procedure resulted in high Cu nanoparticles dispersion on OAC with Cu-0 and Cu+ sites and apparently promoted the catalytic activities during furfural hydrogenation reaction. The obtained Cu-N/OAC-800 shows 99.5% FAL conversion with 98.4% selectivity to furfuryl alcohols (FOL) under reaction condition of 150 degrees C, 2 MPa and 6 h. These results indicated that the excellent catalytic performance of the catalyst was due to the synergic effects of nitrogen doping and Cu metal active sites.
