New tetradentate Schiff base Cu(II) complexes: synthesis, physicochemical, chromotropism, fluorescence, thermal, and selective catalytic oxidation

Three neutral Cu(II)/n(4)-NNNO Schiff base complexes (1-3) were prepared from the (E)-4-nitro-2-(((2-(piperazin-1-yl)ethyl)imino)methyl)phenol, tetradentate Schiff base (SB) ligand, and the corresponding copper(II) salts. The new SB and its complexes were fully characterized by CHN-EA, standard spectroscopic, thermal, and fluorescence analyses. The formation of the complexes was monitored by EDX, FT-IR, and UV-Vis. The chromotropism studies of the complexes reflected remarkable findings, in which bathochromic solvato- and thermochromism shifts were detected. The turn-off-on halochromism phenomena were observed in the acidic and basic medium. On the other hand, the fluorescence of the free SB ligand was turned off via complexation to the Cu(II) center. In the presence of H2O2 as green oxidant and under mild oxidation catalytic condition, the three complexes successfully catalyzed the formation benzaldehyde from benzyl alcohol.

A high ZIF-8 loading PVA mixed matrix membrane on alumina hollow fiber with enhanced ethanol dehydration

In this work, a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed matrix membrane (MMM) was coated onto a-aluminum oxide (alpha-Al2O3 ) hollow fibers for ethanol dehydration by utilizing the pervaporation technique. ZIF-8/PVA solution was prepared via a drying-free, water-based method to obtain a uniform distribution MMM. Before coating the MMM onto the hollow fiber, a pristine PVA solution was first dipcoated onto hollow fiber as a gutter layer to prevent phase separation. Different weight ratios of ZIF-8-loaded MMMs were prepared. The results showed that at high ZIF-8 loading (39 wt %), a high permeate flux (685 g/ m(2) h) and high separation factor (4821) can be observed. Furthermore, compared with free-standing ZIF-8/PVA MMMs, hollow fiber supported ZIF-8/PVA MMMs exhibit a thinner coating thickness but higher pervaporation separation index (approximately 1.5-2 times). The main contribution of this study is not only fabricated the high loading ZIF-8/PVA composite membrane with enhanced performance, but also coated onto the hollow fiber membrane which opens a gate for scale-up production.

Fabrication of carboxymethyl chitosan/poly(epsilon-caprolactone)/doxorubicin/nickel ferrite core-shell fibers for controlled release of doxorubicin against breast cancer

The coaxial electrospinning for producing core-shell nanofibers due to control the release profile of drug by the shell layer has been developed. N-carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC)-polyvinyl alcohol (core)/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) (shell) nanofibers were produced via coaxial electrospinning. Doxorubicin (DOX) and nickel ferrite nanoparticles were incorporated into the nanofibers for controlled release of DOX against MCF-7 breast cancer. The minimum CMC/PCL fiber diameter was found to be 300 nm by optimizing of three variables including voltage to distance ratio (1.5-2.5 kV/cm), CMC concentration (4-6 wt.%) and PCL concentration (8-12 wt.%). The synthesized core-shell fibers were characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM analysis. The extended release and controlled release of DOX from core-shell nanofibers were achieved under physiological pH without external magnetic field (EMF) and acidic pH with EMF during 25 and 7 days, respectively. The maximum cytotoxicity of MCF-7 breast cancer cells was about 83 % using CMC/PCL/nickel ferrite 10 % nanofibers and EMF.

Developing the QSPR model for predicting the storage lipid/water distribution coefficient of organic compounds

The distribution of organic compounds in stored lipids affects their migration, transformation, bioaccumulation, and toxicity in organisms. The storage lipid/water distribution coefficient (log K-lip/w) of organic chemicals, which quantitatively determines such distribution, has become a key parameter to assist their ecological security and health risk. Due to the impossibility to measure K-lip/w values for a huge amount of chemicals, it is necessary to develop predictive approaches. In this work, a quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) model for estimating log K-lip/w values of small organic compounds was constructed based on 305 experimental log K-lip/w values. Quantum chemical descriptors and n-octanol/water partitioning coefficient were employed to characterize the intermolecular interactions that dominate log K-lip/w values. The hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions and molecular size have been found to play important roles in governing the distribution of chemicals between lipids and aqueous phases. The regression (R-2 = 0.959) and validation (Q(2) = 0.960) results indicate good fitting performance and robustness of the developed model. A comparison with the predictive performance of other commercial software further proves the higher accuracy and stronger predictive ability of the developed K-lip/w predictive model. Thus, it can be used to predict the K-lip/w values of cycloalkanes, long-chain alkanes, halides (with fluorine, chlorine, and bromine as substituents), esters (without phosphate groups), alcohols (without methoxy groups), and aromatic compounds.

Development of bio oil and bio asphalt by hydrothermal liquefaction using lignocellulose

Bio asphalt is an organic polymer derived from biomass resources, which has the potential to partially or completely replace petroleum asphalt. This study used lignocellulose to prepare bio oil by hydrothermal liquefaction method. A mixed solvent of ethanol and ethylene glycol was introduced to increase the oil yield and decrease the reaction temperature. The oil yield reached the highest when solvent mixing ratio of 1:1, liquid-solid ratio of 6:1, catalyst dosage of 3%, and reaction temperature of 250 degrees C respectively. The bio oil and 50# asphalt were mixed in proportion sheared for 30 min (1000 rpm) under the condition of 135 degrees C to produce bio asphalt. The chemical structures and rheological properties of bio oil and bio asphalt were investigated and compared with petroleum asphalt. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance analysis indicate that the bio oil expressed a lower H/C ratio, higher O content and more light components including liquid compounds comparing to the petroleum asphalt. The content of the polar group including O-H and C-O of bio oil was higher than that of petroleum asphalt. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to prove the presence of olefins and alcohols in bio oil. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the bio oil expressed better thermal stability than that of petroleum asphalt, which expressed a potential of using as a pavement material. The dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) results showed that the complex shear modulus, G* decreased as the content of bio oil. TiO2 and TiO2/Ag nanofibers: template synthesis, structure, and photocatalytic properties

A fairly simple method for the synthesis of TiO2 and TiO2/Ag fibers containing the anatase-rutile-silver heterojunction with a combination of features attractive for photocatalysis is presented.TiO2 and TiO2/Ag fibers were synthesized by impregnating a cellulose template with alcohol solutions of titanium(IV) tetrabutoxide and silver nitrate, followed by annealing at 500-950 degrees C. The microstructure of the fibers was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, high-resolution transmission electronic microscopy and IR Fourier spectroscopy. The thermal decomposition of silver nitrate results in the formation of silver particles (19 +/- 3 nm), does not affect the crystallite size of anatase (19 +/- 3 nm) and rutile (23 +/- 3 nm), and promotes rutilization of TiO2. The photocatalytic activities of the obtained TiO2/Ag fibers were investigated by evaluating the phenol degradation under visible light irradiation. The highest catalytic activity was shown by mixed-phase samples consisting of 40% rutile and 60% anatase.

Improved hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil model compounds with polymethylhydrosiloxane by Bronsted acidic zeolites

Bio-oil, one of significant renewable energy, was blocked from its direct application by thermodynamic instability due to the high oxygen content, so its deoxygenation needs urgent solution. Avoiding the disadvantages of the traditional catalytic method, such as harsh reaction conditions, potential explosion risk and environmental pollution, we utilize solid-acidic zeolites as low-load Pd-based catalyst supports instead of corrosive acid additives, with polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as the hydrogen-supplying agent, to achieve efficient hydro-deoxygenation of bio-oil models (carbonyl compounds) under mild conditions. The reaction conditions such as Si/Al ratio of HZSM-5 zeolite, temperature, solvent, and the type of Pd salts precursor are optimized. In particular, we have found that polar protic solvents improve catalytic efficiency by promoting proton transfer in the reaction. In an open-to-air, 97.9% ethylbenzene yield can be obtained for acetophenone conversion under mild conditions (0.5 wt% Pd/HZSM-5(18), 65 degrees C, 3 h, n-butanol as solvent), which is more efficient and environmental friendly than currently reports. Meanwhile, hydrogenation-dehydration mechanism was proposed, and the Brunsted acid in HZSM-5 promotes the dehydration of the alcohol (rate-limiting step) by efficiently accelerating the removal of hydroxyl groups and the proton transfer of the reaction. Furthermore, the catalytic scheme exhibits the excellent stability (reusable seven times) and versatility. The potential of a green catalytic technology using with PMHS opens attractive opportunities for bio-oil upgrading.

Significant formulation provided exclusive levels of applicability as well as thin-film forming performance, the minimum bare time possible and admirable homogeneity of the green-clay particles and aloe vera on or before dehydrating. Hence, the fundamental stability investigation which may optimize formulation is stable under minimal storage conditions. Furthermore, microbiological stability evaluation indicated that the preservative was efficient in term of avoiding microbial growth dynamics. Test-retest reliability and correlates of the 6-min walk test in people with alcohol use disorders

Objectives: People with alcohol use disorders (AUD) are at a higher risk for physical co-morbidities. Consequently, their daily life functioning needs to be reliably assessed and followed-up. We examined the reliability of the 6-min walk test (6MWT) in a cohort of inpatients with AUD. Secondary aims were to assess minimal detectable changes (MDC95), practice effects and associations of the 6MWT with demographical and clinical variables. Methods: Two 6MWTs were administered within 3 days to 45 (32.) inpatients with a DSM-5 diagnosis of AUD. Physical complaints before and after the 6MWT were recorded. Patients performed a standing broad jump to assess muscle strength and completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Results: Patients walked 636.3 +/- 82.3 meters and 638.1 +/- 77.6 meters at the first and second test. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.94 (95% confidence interval 0.90-0.97). The MDC95 was 15 meters for men and 9 meters for women. No practice effect was detected. The presence of feet or ankle problems or pain before the test, dyspnea after the test, impaired muscle strength and lower PANAS positive affect scores were independently related to shorter 6MWT distance accounting for 67.3% of the variance. Conclusion: The 6MWT is a reliable tool for evaluating the functional exercise capacity in inpatients with AUD. Health care professionals should consider musculoskeletal and respiratory symptoms when interpreting fitness test outcomes in this vulnerable population.
