A solution of glycerol (11.2 mmol) in 20 mL CH2Cl2 was charged with a freshly prepared porous silicon chip (Example 1). Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) (3.4 mL, 44.7 mmol) was added to the solution via syringe. The mixture was allowed to stir at ambient temperature (23 C.) for 20 hours. The solvent was then removed under reduced atmospheric pressure. Column chromatography was used to separate the PDO from product impurities.
