The ester 25 in the Carroll rearrangement using Al(OiPr)3 at elevated temperature can afford the desired 5E, 9E, 13E-geranyl geranyl acetone (1). In another approach, the GGA (1) can be prepared by treating geranyl linalool (23) with the Meldrum’s acid 26 in the Carroll rearrangement using Al(OiPr)3 at 160 C. Similarly, the use of tert-butyl acetoacetate (27) with geranyl linalool (23) in the Carroll rearrangement can also give the desired 5E, 9E, 13E-geranyl geranyl acetone (1).
