Characterization of bio-nanocomposite films based on gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol blend reinforced with bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers for food packaging applications

Bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers (BCNW) were synthesized from Komagataeibacter xylinus (strain K2G30; UMCC 2756) using sulfuric acid hydrolysis and incorporated into a gelatin-polyvinyl alcohol (GL/PVA) blend film matrix. The effect of BCNW content (1-10 wt% of biopolymer) on the microstructural, mechanical, optical, and water barrier properties of bio-nanocomposites was studied. Transmission electron microscopy showed that BCNW had a needle shape morphology with an average length of 600 nm and an average width of 30 nm. The crystallinity index of BCNW was 94.7% using X-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) illustrated good miscibility between GL/PVA blend film matrix and BCNW up to 7.5 wt%. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode showed molecular interactions between functional groups of the GL/PVA blend film matrix and BCNW. The incorporation of BCNW up to 7.5% into the GL/PVA blend reduced the water vapor transmission rate and water vapor permeability by about 22% and 14%, respectively, while tensile strength, elongation at break, and elastic modulus increased by about 21.5%, 41% and 19%, respectively (p < 0.05). Films transparency was not affected by the addition of BCNW (p > 0.05) suggesting that the BCNW were dispersed uniformly at the nanoscale. All films were colorless (Delta E*<2) with low opacity value (<2) comparable to synthetic plastics. Overall, the characterization of functional properties revealed that GL/PVA blend film reinforced with BCNW could be used as an environmentally friendly packaging material to partially replace or reduce the use of current petroleum-based packaging materials. Development of bio oil and bio asphalt by hydrothermal liquefaction using lignocellulose

Bio asphalt is an organic polymer derived from biomass resources, which has the potential to partially or completely replace petroleum asphalt. This study used lignocellulose to prepare bio oil by hydrothermal liquefaction method. A mixed solvent of ethanol and ethylene glycol was introduced to increase the oil yield and decrease the reaction temperature. The oil yield reached the highest when solvent mixing ratio of 1:1, liquid-solid ratio of 6:1, catalyst dosage of 3%, and reaction temperature of 250 degrees C respectively. The bio oil and 50# asphalt were mixed in proportion sheared for 30 min (1000 rpm) under the condition of 135 degrees C to produce bio asphalt. The chemical structures and rheological properties of bio oil and bio asphalt were investigated and compared with petroleum asphalt. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance analysis indicate that the bio oil expressed a lower H/C ratio, higher O content and more light components including liquid compounds comparing to the petroleum asphalt. The content of the polar group including O-H and C=O of bio oil was higher than that of petroleum asphalt. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to prove the presence of olefins and alcohols in bio oil. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the bio oil expressed better thermal stability than that of petroleum asphalt, which expressed a potential of using as a pavement material. The dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) results showed that the complex shear modulus, G* decreased as the content of bio oil. The Glass transition temperature Tg indicated that the bio asphalt with 10% bio oil content showed similar performance with that of 70# asphalt. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Effect of Hericium erinaceus on bacterial diversity and volatile flavor changes of soy sauce

At present, the consumer demand for high-quality soy sauce is growing. Hericium erinaceus, an edible mushroom with many health benefits, was used for soy sauce fermentation. Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were identified as the main phyla, while, Bacillus and Stenotrophomonas as the predominant genera during soy sauce fermentation. H. erinaceus decreased the richness and diversity of bacteria during soy sauce fermentation due to its antimicrobial effect. Especially, Stenotrophomonas, a common opportunistic pathogen, was replaced by Bacillus during soy sauce fermentation by adding H. erinaceus. Moreover, H. erinaceus significantly promoted the esters and alcohols accumulation, and had positively influenced on a sensory constituent. However, pyrazines, ketones, and alkanes were rich in the control samples. Bacillus, Staphylococcus, and Psychrobacter showed a positive correlation to flavor formation with the addition of H. erinaceus. This study provided new insight into regulating the quality and microbial community of soy sauce by changing the raw material ingredients.

Validity and measurement invariance of the Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment incentive salience domain among treatment-seekers with alcohol use disorder

Incentive salience, or the attribution of motivational value to stimuli, is a biopsychological process that is disrupted in alcohol use disorder (AUD). The Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment (ANA) is a framework to characterize heterogeneity in addiction and establish a common assessment battery for research and clinical use. The ANA framework hypothesizes three constructs that correspond to processes in the etiology, course, and treatment of addiction: incentive salience, negative emotionality, and executive function. The current study extends prior findings on the ANA by validating the incentive salience construct among participants (n = 563) in a multisite prospective study of individuals entering treatment for AUD. We used confirmatory factor analysis to test a one-factor model of incentive salience. Indicators included items assessing perception of urges to drink from the Alcohol Dependence Scale, Impaired Control Scale, and Marlatt Relapse Interview. Results indicated the one-factor model fit the data well (chi(2) (12) = 19.42, p = .08; RMSEA = 0.034 [90% CI: 0.000, 0.060], CFI = 0.992) and was measurement invariant across sex. Incentive salience was associated with drinking patterns (e.g., drinks per day, r = 0.447 [95% CI: 0.379, 0.514]); reasons for drinking (urges/temptation r = 0.529 [95% CI: 0.460, 0.599]); testing personal control, r = 0.384 (95% CI: 0.308, 0.461); social pressure, r = 0.549 (95% CI: 0.481, 0.617); and family history of AUD, r = 0.134. The incentive salience factor demonstrated greater predictive validity for drinking outcomes compared to alternative preexisting scales. Overall, this study provides support for the construct validity and measurement invariance of the ANA incentive salience construct in a sample of individuals seeking AUD treatment.

A Qualitative Investigation of the Experience of Mindfulness Training Among Police Officers

The primary objective of this study was to qualitatively assess the experience of mindfulness-based resilience training (MBRT) among police officers. MBRT is an 8-week intervention designed to enhance police officer resilience in the context of acute and chronic stressors inherent to policing. MBRT has demonstrated preliminary efficacy in decreasing aggression, burnout, alcohol use, sleep disturbance, and improving cortisol reactivity, psychological flexibility, and non-reactivity. Participants (n = 5) were police officers who completed an individual semi-structured interview post-MBRT. A coding schema was developed to identify and categorize participant responses, and then applied the final coding framework to all participant interviews. Results revealed perceived improvements in intrapersonal and interpersonal functioning, benefits of MBRT, and strategies for overcoming potential barriers to mindfulness practice. These preliminary qualitative results are consistent with quantitative psychological and physiological MBRT outcomes and provide further support for MBRT feasibility and acceptability.

Interactive Effects of Quality of Life and Related Factors on Alcohol Use Outcomes

This investigation derives its impetus from public health concerns around detecting, mitigating, and preventing the deleterious effects that alcohol use can cause particularly in advanced age. We aim to complement gerontological research by exploring the interactive effects of quality of life and related factors on alcohol use outcomes assessed by the Drinking Problem Index. The study is based on cross-sectional data collected from questionnaires mailed to a randomly drawn sample of 6,000 Norwegian adults aged 62 and older (participation rate: 32%). According to the Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) analysis, constellations of interactive factors emerged differently for women and men, and, between non-problem and problem drinkers. For women, drinking outcomes were related to intra-psychic functioning, and for men, to physical health and social situation. An ongoing quality-of-life assessment may be very important in the comprehensive assistance provided to those older people who are vulnerable to undergoing alcohol-related harms.

Diabetes and liver cancer risk: A stronger effect in Whites than Blacks?

Background: Both diabetes and liver cancer are overrepresented among African Americans, but limited information is available on the interrelationship of these two diseases among African Americans. We examined the association of diabetes with the incidence of liver cancer and whether this varied by participant self-reported race/ ethnicity. Methods: Using the Southern Community Cohort Study, we conducted a cancer follow up (2002-2016) of a cohort of mostly low-income participants aged 40-79 with diabetes (n = 15,879) and without diabetes (n = 59,077) at study baseline. Cox regression was used to compute Hazard Ratios (HR) and 95% CIs for the risk of incident liver cancer. Results: With 790,132 person years of follow up, 320 incident cases of liver cancer were identified. In analyses controlling for age, sex, race, BMI, current and former smoking, total alcohol consumption, family history of liver cancer, any hepatitis infection, hyperlipidemia and socioeconomic factors, the association between diabetes and risk of liver cancer differed significantly (P-interaction = 0.0001) between participants identifying as Black/African American (AA) or White/European American (EA). Diabetes was associated with 5.3-fold increased cancer risk among EAs (HR 5.4, 95% CI 32-93) vs an 80% increase (HR 1.8, 95% CI 1.3-25) among AAs. Furthermore, controlling for diabetes greatly attenuated the higher risk of liver cancer among AAs; indeed, while the cancer risk among those without diabetes was twice as high among AAs than EAs (HR 2.0, 95% CI 1.4-2.9), no excess in Ms was observed among those with diabetes (HR = 0.7, 95% CI = 0.4-1.1). Conclusion: While liver cancer risk in general is greater in Ms than EAs and diabetes increases this risk in both racial/ethnic groups, diabetes appears to impact liver cancer to a much greater extent among EAs. The findings raise the possibility of racially different mechanisms and impacts of diabetes on this often fatal cancer among Ms and EAs. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Influence of Higher Alcohol Additives in Methanol-Gasoline Blends on the Performance and Emissions of an Unmodified Automotive SI Engine: A Review

More stringent emission norms are implemented all over the world to protect the environment from vehicular pollution. Biofuels are one of the best alternative solutions to reduce cost and environmental pollution. Among many alternate fuels, alcohol is a leading fuel used in automotive spark-ignition engines in pure or blended form. The capability of methanol to substitute gasoline has been known for a long time. This paper aims to systematically review methanol-gasoline blend with higher alcohol additives (ternary blends) as a transportation fuel in unmodified automotive spark-ignition engines. This review summarizes the previous research in methanol-gasoline blends with and without additives on spark-ignition engines’ performance and emission characteristics. Many researchers found that methanol-gasoline blended fuels improve engine performance and emissions. Generally, alcohols burn very effectively and produce only fewer emissions compared to gasoline. Still, lower alcohol may cause some problems such as increased specific fuel consumption, phase separation and corrosion. These problems are further optimized using higher alcohol additives through improved energy content, kinematic viscosity, corrosion resistance, water tolerance and phase stability. Several research studies have been carried out in the past years, which focused mainly on single alcohol blended fuels for spark-ignition engines. Thus, a comprehensive survey of performance, combustion and emission characteristics of methanol-gasoline blended fuel with higher alcohol additives is necessary to show the potential of ternary blends in automotive engines.

Reward-related attentional capture predicts non-abstinence during a one-month abstinence challenge

Background: While it is generally recognised that cognitive attributes can predict behaviour change outcomes in the field of addiction this question is typically studied in treatment seeking samples (to predict treatment outcomes and relapse). However the concept of behaviour change applies to the entire spectrum of addiction-like behaviours and initiatives such as temporary abstinence challenges offer insight into an understudied but equally relevant point of the spectrum. Thus the current study examined whether reward-related attentional capture predicted non-abstinence during IkPas (the Dutch national dry January campaign translated: NoThanks!). Method: Participants included 1130 adults who had complete baseline data and performed above chance level on the cognitive task. Of these 683 participants completed the post-IkPas assessment and were included in the primary analysis. A binary logistic regression examined whether reward-related attentional capture predicted drinking during IkPas controlling for alcohol use at baseline (among other potential confounders). Results: Participants who showed greater reward-related attentional capture before IkPas were more likely to not remain abstinent from drinking during IkPas (p= .014). Findings were replicated using multiple imputation to replace missing data (p = .013). Conclusion: These findings provide important insights into the cognitive mechanisms that support successful behaviour change such as the ability to ignore task-irrelevant reward cues and may inform the development of tools that individuals could use to maximise their likelihood of achieving successful behaviour change.

Persulfate activation by ZIF-67-derived cobalt/nitrogen-doped carbon composites: Kinetics and mechanisms dependent on persulfate precursor

Whereas previous studies that explored the application of metal-carbon composites as persulfate activators have focused on synergistic performance improvements, the potential advantages or features that can be acquired by integrating metal and carbon constituents that differ in terms of reactivity toward persulfate precursors and their preferred activation routes have been overlooked. With ZIF-67-derived cobalt/N-doped carbon composites (Co@N-C) as the model metal-carbon composite, this study takes a look into a switch in the primary degradative pathway depending on the persulfate precursor used and investigates this kind of composite fabrication as a strategy to overcome the drawbacks of single-component activators. In Co@N-C, Co embedded in the carbon matrix caused radical-induced oxidation in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) whereas peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation using a carbon framework involved mediated electron transfer. The different nature of the dominant oxidant was confirmed by investigating the quenching effects of alcohols, bromate formation yield, substrate-specificity, electron paramagnetic resonance spectral features, current generation upon sequential organic and persulfate injection, and product distribution. The Co and N-doped carbon serving as separate reactive sites allowed Co@N-C to exploit both PMS and PDS so it could outperform benchmark metaland carbon-derived materials. Electrochemical measurements linked with X-ray spectroscopic analysis implied that a moderate pyrolysis temperature optimized the Co@N-C activity due to high fractions of graphitic N and Co-N species. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the peroxide bond of PMS is more susceptible to elongation over Co@N-C, thus it is preferentially dissociated to yield sulfate radicals.
