Emotion regulation and experiential avoidance moderate the association between posttraumatic symptoms and alcohol use disorder among Israeli combat veterans

Introduction: the association between Posttraumatic Stress symptoms (PTSS) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) among combat veterans is well established. However, little is known concerning the intertwining effect of distress oriented coping mechanisms on this association. In this study, we sought to explore the moderating role of experiential avoidance (EA), cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES) on the association between PTSS and AUD among Israeli combat veterans. Method: Participants were 189 Israel Defense Forces (IDF) male combat veterans (mean age = 30.03) who completed a set of validated self-report questionnaires assessing PTSS, AUD, EA, CR and ES. Moderation analyses were conducted using a four-step hierarchical regression analysis and an ordinary least squares regression analysis. Results: Analyses indicated that individuals with average or high levels of EA or ES exhibited significant positive association between PTSS and AUD, yet those with low levels of EA or ES exhibited no significant association between PTSS and AUD (b = 0.14,Confidence Interval (CI)[0.06, 0.22, SE = 0.04, t = 3.65, p = .000, 95%] for EA and b = 0.17, CI[0.07, 0.25, SE = 0.04, t = 3.69, p = .000, 95%] for ES). In addition, CR moderated the association between PTSS and AUD (b = 0.18, CI[0.07, 0.29, SE = 0.06, t = 3.24, p = .001, 95%]), so that the association between PTSS and AUD is positive and stronger for higher levels of CR. Conclusions: Our findings imply that EA, ES and CR and emotion regulation may be major facilitators of the association between PTSS and AUD among combat veterans. These findings are discussed in the Israeli context as well as in light of a general psychological perspective.

Acute effects of alcohol on resting-state functional connectivity in healthy young men

Alcohol abuse and dependence remain significant public health issues, and yet the brain circuits that are involved in the rewarding effects of alcohol are poorly understood. One promising way to study the effects of alcohol on neural activity is to examine its effects on functional connectivity between brain areas involved in reward and other functions. Here, we compared the effects of two doses of alcohol (0.4 and 0.8 g/kg) to placebo on restingstate functional connectivity in brain circuits related to reward in 19 healthy young men without histories of alcohol problems. The higher, but not the lower, dose of alcohol, significantly increased connectivity from reward-related regions to sensory and motor cortex, and between seeds associated with cognitive control. Contrary to expectation, alcohol did not significantly change connectivity for the ventral striatum at either dose. These findings reveal unrecognized effects of alcohol on connectivity from reward-related regions to visual and sensory cortical areas.

Examining the effects of problematic alcohol use on cigarette abstinence in recently diagnosed cancer patients enrolled in a cessation trial: A secondary analysis

Aims: Among people with cancer, dual alcohol and tobacco use increases risk for morbidity and mortality. Most smoking cessation clinical trials with this patient population have excluded individuals with problematic alcohol use. This investigation examined whether problematic alcohol use affects smoking cessation in cancer patients. Methods: Mixed-methods secondary analysis of data from the Smokefree Support Study, a randomized-controlled trial examining the efficacy of Intensive (IT; n = 153) vs. Standard Treatment (ST; n = 150) for smoking cessation in newly diagnosed cancer patients. Problematic alcohol use was assessed at enrollment using the Cut-Down Annoyed-Guilty-Eye-Opener (CAGE), weekly frequency of alcohol use and binge drinking measures. Alcohol use was categorized as: no current alcohol use, moderate and problematic use. The primary outcome was biochemically-confirmed cigarette abstinence at 6-months. A subset of patients (n = 72) completed qualitative exit-interviews. Results: Among all participants, biochemically-confirmed cigarette abstinence rates were 25% (n = 32), 28% (n = 27), and 36% (n = 20) for participants reporting no current alcohol use, moderate use, and problematic use, respectively (p = 0.33). In logistic regression analysis, neither problematic alcohol use (AOR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.35-2.67, p = .94) nor the problematic use by study arm interaction (AOR = 2.22, 95% CI = 0.59-8.39, p = .24) were associated with biochemically-confirmed 6-month abstinence. Qualitatively, participants reported that drinking alcohol triggers urges to smoke. Conclusion: Newly diagnosed cancer patients reporting problematic alcohol use were not less likely to quit smoking than those without. Additional research is needed to investigate whether problematic alcohol users may benefit from smoking and alcohol behavior change interventions at the time of cancer diagnosis.

Soaking induced discrepancies in oenological properties, flavor profiles, microbial community and sensory characteristic of Huangjiu (Chinese rice wine)

Soaking is a crucial process in adjusting initial fermentation acidity and achieving desired flavor quality of rice wines. Effects of soaking time on physicochemical characteristic of rice, flavor profiles, microbial community and sensory characteristic of Huangjiu were investigated. Soaking caused significantly changes in amylopectin content, and rice with high amylopectin content was conducive to produce esters and aldehydes during Hungjiu brewing. High-throughput sequencing showed that bacteria types were more abundant than fungi during brewing, suggesting that bacterial community might be primarily responsible for Huangjiu flavor. Differential analysis revealed that Weissella and Enterobacter contributed greatly to the accumulation of alcohols, esters and aldehydes during Huangjiu brewing, while Clostridium, Acinetobacter, Cyanobacteria, Zymomonas and Exiguo-bacterium were responsible for the rancidity. Based on spearman’s correlation analysis, Lactococcus, Weissella, Pediococcus, Lactobacillus and Staphylococcus were the key microbial genera responsible for the flavor characteristic of Huangjiu. While favorable soaking caused an increased intensity in alcohol-aroma, full body and continuation of resultant Huangjiu, insufficient soaking led to a higher intensity of bitter taste. Summarily, soaking acidity ranged from 2 to 3 g/L was beneficial for preventing rancidity and improving the production of flavor compounds in Huangjiu.

Radiological and physical properties of tissue equivalent mammography phantom: Characterization and analysis methods

This article provides methods to fabricate and characterize tissue equivalent properties of mammography phantom. The characterized properties are elemental composition, effective atomic number, electron density, attenuation coefficient and CT number. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVAL), ethanol solution and graphite powder were used to develop samples of breast phantoms. First, the microstructure and elemental composition of the phantom materials were acquired from the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). FESEM micrography was a good analytical technique to indicate void spaces within the phantom. Next, the effective atomic number and electron density were calculated from the percentage of elemental composition based on the energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA). Mayneord’s formula and the Phy-X/ZeXTRa software were used to evaluate the effective atomic number. The calculations show that the effective atomic number ranged from 7.137 to 7.264 and 6.75-7.05 for Mayneord and Phy-X/ZeXTRa approach respectively. The electron density ranged from 3.191-3.209 x 10(23)/g. These values were found to be in good agreement with water and breast tissue by ICRP and AAPM standards. Then, the mass attenuation coefficients of the PVAL were calculated based on the transmission of low photons by using X-ray fluorescent (XRF) technique at 16.61-25.26 keV. The mass attenuation coefficient values were found to be close to water and breast tissue when results were compared to XCOM values. Finally, CT images were acquired to measure CT numbers, which were found to be near to CT number of breast tissues, -21.40 to 24.13 HU. Based on the ICRP, AAPM, BIRADS and XCOM standards, the study successfully showed methods to fabricate and characterized mammography phantoms.

Fatty Acids and Flavor Components in the Oil Extracted from Golden Melon Seeds

For complete utilization of raw materials and edible oil production, the oil from golden melon seeds (GSs) is extracted via the cold-pressing, hot-pressing, and ultrasound-assisted aqueous enzymatic extraction (AEE), and the fatty acid composition, and nutritional value of the extracted GS oils (GSOs) are analyzed. The volatile compounds present in the GSOs are determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The aroma profiles of different GSO samples are further distinguished by using an electronic nose. A total of 16 fatty acids are identified in the GSO samples, with atherogenic, thrombogenic, and nutritive value indices ranging from 0.142-0.151, 0.366-0.403, and 5.019-5.299, respectively. Moreover, 43 volatile compounds, including esters, hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, pyrazines, and aldehydes are identified. The cold-pressed GSO presents fresh and fruity flavors, while the hot-pressed GSO presents roasted, nutty, fatty, and fruity flavors, and the GSO obtained via AEE presents fatty and fruity flavors. The acid and peroxide contents of these oil samples are 0.69-079 mg g(-1) and 5.17-5.79 mmol kg(-1), respectively. The results indicate that the extraction method affects the fatty acid composition, flavor components, and physiochemical properties of the GSO. This study may help promote the development of edible GSO. Practical applications: With high demand for edible oils, it is of great significance to find natural edible oils from different sources. The oil in golden melon seeds is extracted by different methods. Their fatty acid composition and flavor components are analyzed. The GSO extracted via AEE method is rich in fatty acids composition. This work would guide the development of an edible GSO and increase the value of golden melon.

Tissue-specific transcriptome recovery on withdrawal from chronic alcohol exposure in zebrafish

Alcohol consumption can lead to a wide range of systemic disorders brought about by transcriptional changes. Recent studies have documented altered behavior and physiology in zebrafish exposed to alcohol. In this work, we have identified the changes in the zebrafish transcriptome in response to chronic alcohol exposure. We have further followed the extent of transcriptional recovery upon withdrawal from alcohol and found evidence of tissue-specific responses. Our results indicate a greater extent of recovery of the brain transcriptome compared to the liver. We identify two distinct classes of genes in response to withdrawal from alcohol exposure – those that recover their pre-alcohol expression profile versus those that retain altered expression even after the fish are removed from the alcohol environment. Finally, we have examined gender-specific responses to alcohol exposure in zebrafish and find evidence for distinct alcohol tolerance levels. Upon chronic alcohol exposure, a higher percentage of genes show perturbation in expression profile in males compared to females. Female fish also recover better with more genes regaining the control expression level upon withdrawal from alcohol. Overall, our work identifies genes and pathways perturbed by exposure to alcohol, and demonstrates the extent of gender- and tissue-specific transcriptional changes associated with chronic alcoholism and withdrawal. Interest of black carob extract for the development of active biopolymer films for cheese preservation

The aim of this work was to develop bio-based packaging materials based on black carob extracts (BCE) and kappa-carrageenan (kappa-c) blends, and to study their impact for cheese preservation. Firstly, black carob extracts were obtained with and without alcohol pre-treatment (BCE-a and BCE-b), respectively, and its chemical composition and antioxidant properties was analysed. Protein and polyphenol contents were higher in the extract without alcohol pre-treatment (BCE-b). Different bio-based films were prepared by mixing BCEs with kappa-c at different ratios, and the morphological, thermal, mechanical and water barrier properties of the films were evaluated. The antioxidant efficacy of BCE:kappa-c films prepared with both BCE extracts was further compared when applied on the preservation of cheese slides. Results showed that skipping the ethanolic extraction pre-treatment gave rise to more ductile films due to the presence of sucrose and other small sugars or the higher protein content in the BCE-b extract, which could have a plasticizer effect on the biopolymer network. Mixtures with kappa-c increased the rigidity of the films. A good correlation between barrier properties of films and the antioxidant efficacy on cheese samples was observed, suggesting that not only the antioxidant properties but also the physicochemical properties of the films had a direct impact on cheese quality and preservation. Films prepared with both BCEs at 50:50 BCE:kappa-c ratio and those prepared with BCE-a at 25:75 BCE:kappa-c ratio, presented good antioxidant capacity and a good compromise for physicochemical properties. However, from the economical point of view, 50:50 BCE-b:kappa-c films are more suitable since the extraction protocol of BCE-b was simpler and the yield was three-fold higher.
