Changes in Plant-Based Diet Indices and Subsequent Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Women and Men: Three US Prospective Cohorts

OBJECTIVE We evaluated the associations between changes in plant-based diets and subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We prospectively followed 76,530 women in the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) (1986-2012), 81,569 women in NHS II (1991-2017), and 34,468 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2016). Adherence to plant-based diets was assessed every 4 years with the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthful PDI (hPDI), and unhealthful PDI (uPDI). We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs). We pooled results of the three cohorts using meta-analysis. RESULTS We documented 12,627 cases of type 2 diabetes during 2,955,350 person-years of follow-up. After adjustment for initial BMI and initial and 4-year changes in alcohol intake, smoking, physical activity, and other factors, compared with participants whose indices remained relatively stable (+/- 3%), participants with the largest decrease (>10%) in PDI and hPDI over 4 years had a 12-23% higher diabetes risk in the subsequent 4 years (pooled HR, PDI 1.12 [95% CI 1.05, 1.20], hPDI 1.23 [1.16, 1.31]). Each 10% increment in PDI and hPDI over 4 years was associated with a 7-9% lower risk (PDI 0.93 [0.91, 0.95], hPDI 0.91 [0.87, 0.95]). Changes in uPDI were not associated with diabetes risk. Weight changes accounted for 6.0-35.6% of the associations between changes in PDI and hPDI and diabetes risk. CONCLUSIONS Improving adherence to overall and healthful plant-based diets was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas decreased adherence to such diets was associated with a higher risk.

The proportionality constant is the rate constant for the particular unimolecular reaction. the reaction rate is directly proportional to the concentration of the reactant. I hope my blog about 112-60-7 is helpful to your research. Product Details of 112-60-7.

Early prediction of diabetic type 2 based on fuzzy technique

Intelligent analysis of present lifestyle may help to understand the development of the chronic diseases and the relationship of these diseases together. It is possible to reduce or prevent the development of these diseases. In this work, a novel intelligent method is introduced and applied for early detection of type 2 diabetic. Intelligent analysis depends mainly on evaluation life-threatening conditions (obesity, hypertension, smoking status, alcohol drinking status and low level of physical activities) to extract knowledge from linguistic variablesand design a new cognitive tool to assist in the prediction process. This method consists from three stages: in the first stage, data was collected from 100 healthy volunteers, which includes evaluations of life-threatening conditions. The second stage is implementation of fuzzy model for early prediction of type 2 diabetes. Predicted blood glucose values of proposal technique were compared with average fasting blood glucose values based on analysis of Bland-Altman plot. Furthermore, fuzzy system model presents superior results (accuracy = 81%, precision = 0.57% and recall = 0.83%).

Effects of algae subtype and extraction condition on extracted fucoxanthin antioxidant property: A 20-year meta-analysis

Algal fucoxanthin as a carotenoid pigment possesses various health benefits, among which, the antioxidant property is one of the most explored. Current research indicated that algal fucoxanthin is generally extracted from different subtypes (microand macro-algae) under varying extraction conditions. However, it lacks information whether algae subtypes and extraction conditions present a remarkable impact on the antioxidant property of the extracted fucoxanthin. In this study, the effects of algae subtype and extraction condition (i.e., extraction solvents, temperature, time, pressure and illumination condition) on fucoxanthin antioxidant property were investigated by performing a meta-analysis. The subtotal standard mean difference (SMD) of the microalgae and macroalgae subtypes were 12.59 (95% confidence interval (CI): 3.63-21.56) and 7.20 (3.44-10.96), respectively, presenting an overlapping range. This suggested that no statistically significant differences existed in the fucoxanthin antioxidant property extracted from two subtypes, which was consistent with the results from the subgroup analysis and meta-regression. Similar observations were found for algal fucoxanthin extracted by alcohols (SMD (CI):7.18 (3.36-11.00)) or alkanes (SMD (CI):11.88 (3.62-20.15)). Moreover, the employed extraction conditions including extraction time (SMD (CI) for >= 60 min vs <60 min: 8.03 (3.55-12.50) and 7.97 (2.49-13.45)), pressure (SMD (CI) for normal vs pressurized: 7.68 (4.00-11.35) and 10.64 (0.21-21.03)), and illumination (SMD (CI) for dark vs normal: 6.91 (2.31-11.50) and 9.45 (4.17-14.73)) showed no statistical influence on fucoxanthin antioxidant property. However, extraction at higher temperature produced stronger fucoxanthin antioxidant property (SMD (CI) for room temperature vs >= 40 degrees C: 31.43 (12.27-50.59) and 7.21 (3.69-10.74)). Additionally, the fucoxanthin antioxidant property exhibited a positive concentration-dependent correlation according to meta-regression analysis. Our findings provide suggestions for fucoxanthin extraction from algae under various conditions and give insights to its application as an antioxidant. As more data become available in the future, data analysis could be updated for more robust comparisons.

Construction of graphene oxide membrane through non-covalent cross-linking by sulfonated cyclodextrin for ultra-permeable butanol dehydration

Two-dimensional (2D) lamellar graphene oxide (GO) membranes represent promising porous materials in alcohol dehydration. The separation performance can be manipulated by the physicochemical properties of interlayer channels. The relatively low flux and poor stability of GO-based membranes in aqueous environment are the major drawbacks. Herein, we intercalated a supramolecular compound, sulfobutyl-beta-cyclodextrin (SCD), into the interlayer pores/channels of GO membranes. The sulfonic acid groups on SCD molecules are able to cross-link adjacent GO nanosheets through non-covalent interactions. The GO-SCD membranes possess excellent water affinity due to the presence of high hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups. For the n-butanol dehydration, the GO-SCD/PTFE membranes with well-defined interlayer pores exhibited ultrahigh permeation flux of 12955 g m(-2) and separation factor of 1299 under 80 degrees C. The membranes remained stable in 144 h separation performance evaluation test and exhibited obviously enhanced thermal stability.

Improving the performance of a photonic PCR system using TiO2 nanoparticles

Nucleic acid amplification using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method has been widely used in different fields such as agricultural science, medicine, pathogen identification, and forensics to name a few. Today, it seems inevitable to have a robust, simple PCR system for diagnostics at the point-of-care (POC) level. Many photonic PCR systems have been proposed in the literature that benefit from plasmonic photothermal heating to achieve the common PCR thermal cycling. However, non-homogeneous temperature distribution is a challenge in some of them. In the present work, to achieve more efficient gene amplification, the effect of adding TiO2 nanoparticles has been investigated in a photonic PCR benefiting from plasmonic photothermal heating. The system enjoys higher heating and cooling rates than those of conventional PCR systems while having much lower energy consumption. The average heating and cooling rates are 4.44 degrees C/s and 2.65 degrees C/s, respectively. The system demonstrates acceptable temperature stability and accuracy with negligible deviation from the set points. Furthermore, the system is capable of amplifying eight gene samples simultaneously which makes it a viable choice for POC diagnostics. A part of the Alcohol Oxidase gene has been amplified using the plasmonic thermal cycler. It is demonstrated that adding TiO2 nanoparticles with a proper concentration to the sample provides a more specific band that can be ascribed to more homogeneous temperature distribution owing to enhanced thermal conductivity. The best amplification of the target gene has been achieved with a concentration of 0.4 nM of nanoparticles. (c) 2020 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Early life stress induces hyperactivity but not increased anxiety-like behavior or ethanol drinking in outbred heterogeneous stock rats

Early life stress is known to impact vulnerability to psychopathological disorders in adulthood, including anxiety and alcohol use disorder (AUD), but the mechanisms underlying susceptibility to these outcomes are not fully understood. In the current study, we used adolescent social isolation (ASI) to determine whether Heterogeneous Stock (HS) rats, an outbred model used for genetic fine-mapping, could be used to study the genetics contributing to ASI-induced anxiety- and AUD-like behavior. We isolated (ASI) or group-housed (adolescent group-housed; AGH) 64 male HS rats at 4 weeks of age. After 5 weeks in these housing conditions, multiple anxiety and coping/despair-like behaviors were measured. All rats were then individually housed and assessed for voluntary ethanol self-administration. At euthanasia, synaptoneurosomes were isolated from a subset of brains to examine the expression of two proteins associated with alcohol drinking-related behaviors, GluA1 and SK2, in the dorsal (dHC) and ventral hippocampus (vHC). We found that ASI increased hyperactivity in the open field test relative to AGH, with no changes in other anxiety-like behaviors. Surprisingly, ASI rats demonstrated decreased immobility and increased climbing in the forced swim test relative to AGH. In contrast to prior studies by us and others, we found no difference in self-administration of 20% ethanol, with decreased ethanol self-administration in ASI relative to AGH rats at higher ethanol concentrations. Furthermore, while ASI in Long-Evans rats resulted in decreased SK2 expression in vHC synaptosomes, no differences were seen in vHC synaptosomes for SK2 or GluA1 in HS rats. These results demonstrate that HS rats are protected against many of the negative effects previously seen in response to ASI, namely anxiety-like behavior and increased ethanol self-administration. The current work suggests that a lack of change in SK2 and GluA1 expression levels in the vHC may play a role in conferring this protection. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Patterns of bi-directional relations across alcohol use, religiosity, and self-control in adolescent girls

Examining predictors of alcohol use among adolescent girls is increasingly important to enhance prevention efforts, given that the gender gap in alcohol use is steadily closing. While both religiosity and self-control have been independently associated with decreased alcohol use, little research has explored 1) whether religiosity and self-control are reciprocally related and 2) whether the reciprocal association between these constructs may indicate different patterns in the development of alcohol use. As such, this study examined whether there are multiple patterns of reciprocal relationships across religiosity, self-control, and alcohol use among adolescent girls. Latent variable mixture modeling was combined with an autoregressive cross-lagged panel model to identify discrete, prototypical patterns of longitudinal associations (i.e., subgroups) across religiosity, self-control, and alcohol use among 2,122 girls ages 13-17. Psychosocial covariates (e.g., conduct problems) were examined as predictors of each subgroup. Two subgroups were identified. Self-control was associated with reduced alcohol use in both the majority (87.56% of the sample) and minority (12.44% of the sample) subgroups, but only the majority subgroup also demonstrated associations between religiosity, self-control, and alcohol use. Religiosity may predict lower alcohol use in a majority of adolescent girls but this association may not be present among all girls, suggesting that there is a qualitative difference in how religiosity is associated with self-control and alcohol use between subgroups. Results also suggest that higher levels of conduct problems may predict which girls are more likely to demonstrate associations between only self-control and alcohol use, and demonstrate no significant associations with religiosity.

Automatic cognitions as mediators of parental influence on adolescent cannabis use

Aims: Multiple social influences affect cannabis use in adolescents, including parental and peer cannabis use norms. However, the mechanisms of influence underlying these social influences remain unclear. Recent studies have suggested that cognitions about cannabis use and the effects of cannabis may mediate social influences. The current study explored the relationship between automatic self-generated cognitions and their relationship with parental influences on cannabis use in a sample of n = 675 11 to 16-year-old adolescents over three years (Mean Age: 13.96, SD = 0.88, 56.4% female). Methods: Participants reported perceptions of parental cannabis use and completed a cannabis word association task (CWAT), an open-ended cannabis outcome expectancy liking (COEL) task, and measures of cannabis use in the past year. Results: Perceived parental use did not directly predict cannabis use two years later. However, a latent construct loading on both CWAT and COEL scores strongly predicted cannabis use over the following year. Structural modelling demonstrated that the association between previous cannabis use and parental cannabis use and adolescents’ cannabis use over the next two years was fully mediated by cognitions. Conclusion: The results of the study are discussed and interpreted through the lens of dual-process theories.

Fine-tuning the architecture of loose nanofiltration membrane for improved water flux, dye rejection and dye/salt selective separation

Herein, loose nanofiltration membranes were prepared using non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. In NIPS, the non-solvent controls the morphology of the skin layer of the asymmetric membranes formed, while the solvent tunes the morphology of the lower layer. The membranes were made from polyethersulfone in n-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) with the addition of dicarboxylic acids (glutaric acid, azelaic acid). Aliphatic alcohols (1-butanol, 1-octanol) were added to the solvent to tailor the skin layer pore morphology. Cross-sectional electron microscope images revealed the acids created nano-voids and shorter micro-voids. The addition of alcohols extended the micro-voids and improved symmetry. Pore size distribution results showed that the addition of the alcohols did indeed reduce the pore size as hypothesised. The performance of the modified polyethersulfone membranes was greatly improved in terms of pure water flux and salt passage without sacrificing the dye rejection. The loose nanofiltration membranes prepared in this study showed good dye/salt separation capability compared to most of the results reported in literature. The membranes were compacted with de-ionised water at an applied pressure of 4 bar for 5 h and rejections tests were done at 2 bar. It is hereby reported that the membranes achieved a high salt passage (Na2SO4 rejection varying between <3% and similar to 12%), as well as sustainable high Congo red rejection of 97%. The proportionality constant is the rate constant for the particular unimolecular reaction. the reaction rate is directly proportional to the concentration of the reactant. Promotion effect of La on oxygen vacancy formation over Zn-Cr based catalyst for isobutanol synthesis from syngas

A series of catalysts were designed and synthesized via doping lanthanum into ZnCr oxide to realize efficient synthesis of isobutanol from syngas. By applying a combination of characterizations (XRD, TEM, EPR, XPS and in situ FT-IR) and DFT calculations, the effects of lanthanum promoter on catalyst structure and catalytic performance were investigated. With the doping of lanthanum, ZnCrLax composite oxides with a novel catalyst structure were constructed, in which Zn atom at tetrahedron site was partly substituted by doping La atom. The presence of this structure enhanced the formation of more oxygen vacancy sites and further benefitted the CO activation. In addition, formate intermediate was easier to generate and exhibited superior stability over ZnCrLax surface thus leaded to remarkably promoted catalytic activity. The ZnCrLa0.05 catalyst achieved optimum total alcohols selectivity of 61%, and the fraction of isobutanol reached as high as 24.6% under CO conversion of 23%.
