Selective electrooxidation of 2-propanol on Pt nanoparticles supported on Co3O4: an in-situ study on atomically defined model systems

2-Propanol and its dehydrogenated counterpart acetone can be used as a rechargeable electrofuel. The concept involves selective oxidation of 2-propanol to acetone in a fuel cell coupled with reverse catalytic hydrogenation of acetone to 2-propanol in a closed cycle. We studied electrocatalytic oxidation of 2-propanol on complex model Pt/Co3O4(111) electrocatalysts prepared in ultra-high vacuum and characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. The electrocatalytic behavior of the model electrocatalysts has been investigated in alkaline media (pH 10, phosphate buffer) by means of electrochemical infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy and ex-situ emersion synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy as a function of Pt particle size and compared with the electrocatalytic behavior of Pt(111) and pristine Co3O4(111) electrodes under similar conditions. We found that the Co3O4(111) film is inactive towards electrochemical oxidation of 2-propanol under the electrochemical conditions (0.3-1.1 V-RHE). The electrochemical oxidation of 2-propanol readily occurs on Pt(111) yielding acetone at an onset potential of 0.4 V-RHE. The reaction pathway does not involve CO but yields strongly adsorbed acetone species leading to a partial poisoning of the surface sites. On model Pt/Co3O4(111) electrocatalysts, we observed distinct metal support interactions and particle size effects associated with the charge transfer at the metal/oxide interface. We found that ultra-small Pt particles (around 1 nm and below) consist of partially oxidized Pt-delta(+) species which show minor activity towards 2-propanol oxidation. In contrast, conventional Pt particles (particle size of a few nm) are mainly metallic and show high activity toward 2-propanol oxidation.

Automatic cognitions as mediators of parental influence on adolescent cannabis use

Aims: Multiple social influences affect cannabis use in adolescents, including parental and peer cannabis use norms. However, the mechanisms of influence underlying these social influences remain unclear. Recent studies have suggested that cognitions about cannabis use and the effects of cannabis may mediate social influences. The current study explored the relationship between automatic self-generated cognitions and their relationship with parental influences on cannabis use in a sample of n = 675 11 to 16-year-old adolescents over three years (Mean Age: 13.96, SD = 0.88, 56.4% female). Methods: Participants reported perceptions of parental cannabis use and completed a cannabis word association task (CWAT), an open-ended cannabis outcome expectancy liking (COEL) task, and measures of cannabis use in the past year. Results: Perceived parental use did not directly predict cannabis use two years later. However, a latent construct loading on both CWAT and COEL scores strongly predicted cannabis use over the following year. Structural modelling demonstrated that the association between previous cannabis use and parental cannabis use and adolescents’ cannabis use over the next two years was fully mediated by cognitions. Conclusion: The results of the study are discussed and interpreted through the lens of dual-process theories.

Evaluation of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis as protective culture for active packaging of non-fermented foods: Creamy mushroom soup and sliced cooked ham

An innovative edible coating, made from food grade polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and gelatin hydrolysates (HGel), was evaluated as a carrier of Lactococcus lactis acting as anti-listeria protective culture for refrigerated foods. The coating was applied on a compostable polylactic acid film surface and its anti-listeria activity was evaluated at 4 degrees C in a liquid culture medium and in solid agar, inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes. The best results were obtained in agar, exerting a bactericide effect, whereas in the liquid medium the coating had bacteriostatic behaviour. Furthermore, the active coating was applied to the surface of bags or separator liners made from polylactic acid. Its effectivity was evaluated with creamy mushroom soup (bags) and sliced cooked ham (separator liners) previously inoculated with L. monocytogenes and stored at 4 degrees C. Results showed that the coating was effective at inhibiting pathogen growth; however, it did not display a bactericide effect in the foods. In addition, L. lactis remained viable in all experiments conducted in this study. The acidification produced by L. lactis, because of the generation of organic acids, did not compromise the sensory properties of the sliced cooked ham after 16 days of refrigerated storage. In contrast, consumers perceived a mushroom soup acidification because of a greater decrease in pH than the sliced cooked ham. This study demonstrates that a food grade polyvinyl alcohol polymer blended with gelatin hydrolysates can be used as a carrier of protective cultures of L. lactis to increase the microbiological safety of refrigerated foods.

Design and synthesis of novel amphipathic ionic liquids for biodiesel production from soapberry oil

Biodiesel produced from non-edible oils has received intensive attention in recent years. Herein, a series of novel amphipathic ionic liquids (ILs) based on the 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) were prepared for the transesterification of soapberry oil and methanol. The structures of the prepared ILs were systematically characterized by both Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR). In addition, the effects of side-chain length of cation and the number of active site (H+) of ILs on the biodiesel yield were investigated, and the results suggested that 1-dodecyl-(4-dimethylammonium)-pyridinium bisulfate ([C12-DMAPH][HSO4](2)) exhibited the highest catalytic efficiency. Meanwhile, [C12-DMAPH][HSO4](2) was proven to be amphipathic, and the corresponding catalytic mechanism was proposed. Under the catalysis of [C12-DMAPH][HSO4](2), the optimum operating conditions of transesterification of soapberry oil and methanol were explored via the combination of single factor experiment and response surface methodology, obtaining the high biodiesel yield of (98.02 +/- 0.36)% under the optimum operating conditions. Importantly, [C12-DMAPH][HSO4](2) exhibited high stability in the transesterification of soapberry oil and methanol in five consecutive runs. Furthermore, the catalytic activities of [C12-DMAPH][HSO4](2) towards other transesterification of non edible oils and lower alcohols were also investigated, which indicated a general applicability of the prepared IL. Enantiomer composition of chiral compounds present in traditional Slovak Tokaj wines

In the presented study volatile organic compounds (VOC) profiles of the most valuable products from Slovak Tokaj wine region were characterized using SPME-GC-MS. Identified volatile organic compounds in studied samples of Tokaj selection wines and Tokaj essences belonged to esters, terpenes, higher alcohols, volatile acids, lactones and aldehydes. From identified VOC, chiral compounds were selected, and their enantiomers were separated by heart-cut two-dimensional GC system. Enantiomer separation was optimized, and this advanced method was applied to determine enantiomeric ratios (ER) of studied compounds in 53 traditional botrytized Tokaj wines. Terpenic compounds linalool and limonene were present in ER resembling the racemic mixture, hotrienol expressed the slight dominancy of S-enantiomer (51-82 %) and S-alpha-terpineol varied from 47 to 70 %. Moreover, linalool and limonene were present only in wines of younger vintages. ER of 2,3-butanediol has shown the predominance of 2R,3R-enantiomer in all samples even though reached also values that were not usual for common white wines (55-100 %). Whiskey lactones were identified in all wines aged in oak barrels and exclusive presence of (4S,5S)-cisand (4S,5R)-transenantiomers was confirmed.

Improved hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil model compounds with polymethylhydrosiloxane by Bronsted acidic zeolites

Bio-oil, one of significant renewable energy, was blocked from its direct application by thermodynamic instability due to the high oxygen content, so its deoxygenation needs urgent solution. Avoiding the disadvantages of the traditional catalytic method, such as harsh reaction conditions, potential explosion risk and environmental pollution, we utilize solid-acidic zeolites as low-load Pd-based catalyst supports instead of corrosive acid additives, with polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as the hydrogen-supplying agent, to achieve efficient hydro-deoxygenation of bio-oil models (carbonyl compounds) under mild conditions. The reaction conditions such as Si/Al ratio of HZSM-5 zeolite, temperature, solvent, and the type of Pd salts precursor are optimized. In particular, we have found that polar protic solvents improve catalytic efficiency by promoting proton transfer in the reaction. In an open-to-air, 97.9% ethylbenzene yield can be obtained for acetophenone conversion under mild conditions (0.5 wt% Pd/HZSM-5(18), 65 degrees C, 3 h, n-butanol as solvent), which is more efficient and environmental friendly than currently reports. Meanwhile, hydrogenation-dehydration mechanism was proposed, and the Brunsted acid in HZSM-5 promotes the dehydration of the alcohol (rate-limiting step) by efficiently accelerating the removal of hydroxyl groups and the proton transfer of the reaction. Furthermore, the catalytic scheme exhibits the excellent stability (reusable seven times) and versatility. The potential of a green catalytic technology using with PMHS opens attractive opportunities for bio-oil upgrading.

TiO2 and TiO2/Ag nanofibers: template synthesis, structure, and photocatalytic properties

A fairly simple method for the synthesis of TiO2 and TiO2/Ag fibers containing the anatase-rutile-silver heterojunction with a combination of features attractive for photocatalysis is presented.TiO2 and TiO2/Ag fibers were synthesized by impregnating a cellulose template with alcohol solutions of titanium(IV) tetrabutoxide and silver nitrate, followed by annealing at 500-950 degrees C. The microstructure of the fibers was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, high-resolution transmission electronic microscopy and IR Fourier spectroscopy. The thermal decomposition of silver nitrate results in the formation of silver particles (19 +/- 3 nm), does not affect the crystallite size of anatase (19 +/- 3 nm) and rutile (23 +/- 3 nm), and promotes rutilization of TiO2. The photocatalytic activities of the obtained TiO2/Ag fibers were investigated by evaluating the phenol degradation under visible light irradiation. The highest catalytic activity was shown by mixed-phase samples consisting of 40% rutile and 60% anatase.

Development of bio oil and bio asphalt by hydrothermal liquefaction using lignocellulose

Bio asphalt is an organic polymer derived from biomass resources, which has the potential to partially or completely replace petroleum asphalt. This study used lignocellulose to prepare bio oil by hydrothermal liquefaction method. A mixed solvent of ethanol and ethylene glycol was introduced to increase the oil yield and decrease the reaction temperature. The oil yield reached the highest when solvent mixing ratio of 1:1, liquid-solid ratio of 6:1, catalyst dosage of 3%, and reaction temperature of 250 degrees C respectively. The bio oil and 50# asphalt were mixed in proportion sheared for 30 min (1000 rpm) under the condition of 135 degrees C to produce bio asphalt. The chemical structures and rheological properties of bio oil and bio asphalt were investigated and compared with petroleum asphalt. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance analysis indicate that the bio oil expressed a lower H/C ratio, higher O content and more light components including liquid compounds comparing to the petroleum asphalt. The content of the polar group including O-H and C-O of bio oil was higher than that of petroleum asphalt. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to prove the presence of olefins and alcohols in bio oil. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the bio oil expressed better thermal stability than that of petroleum asphalt, which expressed a potential of using as a pavement material. The dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) results showed that the complex shear modulus, G* decreased as the content of bio oil. The Glass transition temperature Tg indicated that the bio asphalt with 10% bio oil content showed similar performance with that of 70# asphalt. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
