Highly flexible, self-healable and conductive poly(vinyl alcohol)/Ti3C2Tx MXene film and it’s application in capacitive deionization

Self-healing materials show great application potential in the field of flexible energy storage and wearable devices due to their special properties. Here, a self-healing material, application in Capacitive deionization for the first time is reported, which could autonomously self-healing damaged interfaces. We fabricated that hydrogel (MNH) composites incorporating MXene (Ti3C2Tx) by dynamic poly(vinylalcohol)-based network cross-linked by diol-borate ester bonding. The material fast restores its configuration, mechanical properties, and capacitive performances during after healing and shift different shape in the actual application environment transformation. The MNH electrode has good mechanical properties, self-healing efficiency is as high as 92%, the electrochemical healing properties is of 95.8%. The feasibility of its application in capacitive deionization was proved. The electrode performed a salt adsorption capacity of about 51 mg/g at a current density of 10 mA.g(-1) and a voltage window of 1 V and showed excellent cyclic stability. Our work expands the application scenarios of self-healing materials and provides a promising approach for the development of capacitive deionizing electrodes with good self-healing properties and long life.

A new insight of lignin pyrolysis mechanism based on functional group evolutions of solid char

To elucidate the mechanism of biomass lignin pyrolysis, the functional group evolution in lignin chars derived at 200-600 degrees C was investigated using two-dimensional perturbation correlation infrared spectroscopy, associated with the properties of the volatile products. Biotransformation of spent coffee grounds by fermentation with monocultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lachancea thermotolerans aided by yeast extracts

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) is a low-value solid food waste generated from the rising consumption of coffee. There is a need to transform the huge amount of SCG to value-added products such as alcoholic beverages. In this study, monocultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Merit and Lachancea thermotolerans Concerto were used to ferment SCG hydrolysates supplemented with yeast extracts. The addition of yeast extracts slightly enhanced the growth of both S. cerevisiae Merit and L. thermotolerans Concerto. In addition, the yeast extracts also increased the production of organic acids (e.g. succinic acid and acetic acid) and volatiles such as 2-phenylethyl alcohol and ethyl esters (e.g. ethyl octanoate and ethyl 2,4-hexadienoate). Furthermore, the supplementation of yeast extracts showed a more significant effect on the performance (e.g. yeast growth) of S. cerevisiae Merit than that on L. thermotolerans Concerto. Our results indicated that the addition of yeast extracts may provide a new strategy to enhance the transformation of SCG into a potential alcoholic beverage with flavor compound complexity.

Substance use and abuse, COVID-19-related distress, and disregard for social distancing: A network analysis

Research shows that there has been a substantial increase in substance use and abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that substance use/abuse is a commonly reported way of coping with anxiety concerning COVID-19. Anxiety about COVID-19 is more than simply worry about infection. Research provides evidence of a COVID Stress Syndrome characterized by (1) worry about the dangers of COVID-19 and worry about coming into contact with coronavirus contaminated objects or surfaces, (2) worry about the personal socioeconomic impact of COVID-19, (3) xenophobic worries that foreigners are spreading COVID-19, (4) COVID-19-related traumatic stress symptoms (e.g., nightmares), and (5) COVID-19-related compulsive checking and reassurance-seeking. These form a network of interrelated nodes. Research also provides evidence of another constellation or syndrome, characterized by (1) belief that one has robust physical health against COVID-19, (2) belief that the threat of COVID-19 has been exaggerated, and (3) disregard for social distancing. These also form a network of nodes known as a COVID-19 Disregard Syndrome. The present study, based on a population-representative sample of 3075 American and Canadian adults, sought to investigate how these syndromes are related to substance use and abuse. We found substantial COVID-19-related increases in alcohol and drug use. Network analyses indicated that although the two syndromes are negatively correlated with one another, they both have positive links to alcohol and drug abuse. More specifically, COVID-19-related traumatic stress symptoms and the tendency to disregard social distancing were both linked to substance abuse. Clinical and public health implications are discussed.

Synthesis and Characterization of Poly (vinyl alcohol) / Fullerene C60 Membrane via Chemical and Radiation Crosslinking

Fullerene C60 (FULL-C60) was used as a nano-filler in the preparation of the chemical-crosslinking polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by glutaraldehyde (Glut) which is copolymerized with acrylate oligomers, 2carboxyethyl acrylate (CEA) followed by gamma irradiation. The effect of the FULL-C60 content on the gel content and swelling behavior of Glut-(PVA/CEA)-FULL-C60 copolymer hydrogel was investigated. The results revealed an increase in the gel content and a significant reduction in swelling of the nanocomposite material. There are influences for the PVA molecular weight, fullerene content, and absorbed dose on the gel content of the prepared nanocomposite. The irradiation of chemical crosslinked nanocomposites demonstrated approximately a 90% gelation over a range of 50-300 kGy irradiation doses. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed a homogeneous distribution of nanocomposites in the composite matrix. The improvement in the thermal stability of radiation Glut(PVA/CEA) and Glut-(PVA-CEA)-FULL-C60 was evaluated using the thermogravimetric analysis Technique (TGA). The mechanical properties were examined via dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) which showed significant variation because of the addition of nanocomposites and irradiation doses.

Post-legalization changes in marijuana use in a sample of young California adults

Introduction: Increasing marijuana use among young adults is a concern due to substantial acute and chronic health risks. More widespread use of marijuana may also lead to increased use of nicotine and tobacco products. California legalized commercial sales of marijuana for recreational use as of January 2018. To our knowledge no studies to date have examined subsequent changes in marijuana use. The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that marijuana use frequency increased following legalization of recreational sales. We also hypothesized that increased marijuana frequency would predict greater frequency of nicotine/tobacco consumption. Methods: The study was a secondary analysis of a longitudinal study of tobacco use among non-daily cigarette smokers. Participants were 563 young adults (aged 18-24) enrolled in 2015-16 and followed quarterly for 3 years. Results: A piecewise multilevel regression model indicated that marijuana use frequency did not change over time, including following legalization. More frequent use was associated with younger age and identifying as white (ps < 0.001, which did not change after legalization. Marijuana frequency was moderated by sex (p < .001), with women reporting increasing and men decreasing use over time. It was also associated with tobacco use, and particularly with e-cigarette use following legalization (ps < 0.05). Conclusions: Findings suggest legalization of recreational marijuana sales had a negligible overall impact on days of use among young adults, but may have prompted increased interest in marijuana among some, particularly women and e-cigarette users. Hypothesis: The high incompatibility of bio-based materials such as protein and polysaccharides require a series of modifications to develop stable microstructures effectively. By modifying the density and charge of surface residues, pulsed electric fields processing can improve inter/intramolecular interactions, compatibility, and microstructure of bio-based nanostructured composites. Experiment: In this work, the impact of pulsed electric fields at a specific energy of 60-700 kJ/kg (electric field strength = 1.6 kV/cm) on self-assembly of zein-chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol)-polyethylene glycol composite dispersion was investigated at pH 4.0, 5.7, and 6.8. Findings: Superior complex coacervated matrices were assembled at pH 4.0 and 5.7 before and after pulsed electric fields treatment at a specific energy of 390-410 kJ/kg. The compact and homogenous behaviour was attributable to pulsed electric fields-induced alteration of functional group interactions in a pH-dependent manner. Irrespective of the pH, very high electric field intensity caused excessive system perturbation leading to severe fragmentation and poor development of coacervates. The crucial insights from this study reveal that the self-assembly behaviour and integration of biopolymer-based sys-tems possessing different local charges can be enhanced by optimising pulsed electric fields processing parameters and the properties of the colloidal systems such as the pH. Strong metal-support interaction induced O-2 activation over Au/MNb2O6 (M= Zn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+) for efficient photocatalytic benzyl alcohol oxidative esterification

A series of metal niobates (MNb2O6, M = Zn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+) were prepared from H-niobate precursor under hydrothermal conditions, in which amino groups of L-lysine play an important role. Au nanoparticles were then supported on these niobates by NaBH4 reduction method. More importantly, the strong interaction between Au nanoparticles and ZnNb2O6 generates negatively charged Au which can activate molecular oxygen to form the exclusive high-active peroxide (NbOOAu) species on Au/ZnNb2O6 surface under visible light irradiation, observed in situ by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). The optimal NbOOAu species produced on the surface of Au/ZnNb2O6 can remove the H atom of the methylene group (-CH2-) of benzyl alcohol, leading to high photocatalytic activity of Au/ZnNb2O6 compared with Au/NiNb2O6 and Au/CoNb2O6. This modulation of interaction of Au and niobates for the activation of molecular oxygen provides a new prospect for highly selective photocatalytic oxidation reactions.

Girdling stimulates anthocyanin accumulation and promotes sugar, organic acid, amino acid level and antioxidant activity in red plum: An overview of skin and pulp metabolomics

Girdling is a widespread agronomic technique to increase the fruit quality characteristics (e.g. size, solid soluble content [SSC] and colour). However, the information on the fruit metabolic changes related to this practice still remains unclear and fragmentary. Moreover, girdling duration and application time may greatly affect the plant/ fruit metabolic responses producing sometimes counterproductive results. Fruit quality, metabolomic and antioxidant analyses were conducted to characterise the effects of two different girdling dates (4- and 2-weeks before the harvest, 4 W and 2 W, respectively) in skin and pulp of red-fleshed plum (Prunus cerasifera var. pissardii). Overall, the pulp metabolism was altered in both 4 W and 2 W Girdling by inducing accumulation of sugars (sucrose and trehalose), sugar alcohols (inositol and xylitol), organic acids (especially some TCA cycle intermediates such as alpha-ketoglutaric, citric, isocitric, fumaric and malic acid), amino acids (beta-alanine and L-proline), anthocyanins and other phenols. In the skin only girdling 4 W showed major significant differences compared to the control increasing the fruit quality characteristics (size, SSC, dry matter and red colour) and showing greater metabolic changes with respect to the controls. Furthermore, the total antioxidant activity was also increased in both skin and pulp respect to other treatment only in Girdling 4 W. This approach could be used with both P. cerasifera plums as well as other red-fleshed fruit species in order to ensure red-fleshed fruits production with a uniform red colouration and higher content of bioactive compounds.

3D nanoflower-like layered double hydroxide modified quaternized chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol composite anion conductive membranes for fuel cells

To solve the trade-off problem among ionic conductivity, mechanical and chemical stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs), quaternized chitosan (QCS) was first prepared and then was blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to improve mechanical strength of QCS. Afterwards, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical flower-like layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were prepared via one-pot ethylene glycol-assisted solvothermal method, and then were incorporated into QCS/PVA blend matrix to fabricate composite AEMs. By constructing 3D hierarchical structure, the active sites of LDH nanosheets are fully exposed, thus impressive ion conductivity, alkali and fuel resistant ability of LDH nanosheets can be rationally utilized. The composite membrane displayed the maximum OH- conductivity of 25.7 mS cm(-1), which was 48.6 % higher than that of the pristine membrane. Alkaline stability measurement proved that the composite membranes kept residual ionic conductivity of as high as 92 % after immersion in a 2 M KOH for 100 h. Due to the decreased methanol permeability and increased conductivity, the composite membrane with 6% LDHs content exhibited a peak power density of 73 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C, whereas the pristine membrane demonstrated only 40 mW cm(-2).
