Integrated microwave- and enzyme-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from olive pomace

The olive pomace (OP) is an underutilized byproduct from the olive oil extraction that has the potential to be used as a source of antioxidant phenolics for nutraceutical applications. The simultaneous use of enzymes (cellulase, pectinase, and tannase) and microwave processing was evaluated with respect to OP phenolic extractability and composition. Microwave-assisted extraction achieved similar phenolic extractability (272 mg GAE/g OP) to conventional solvent extraction using water as a solvent, a higher solids-to-liquid ratio (1:15 vs. 1:50, g/mL), and a shorter reaction time (17 vs. 120 min). The use of enzymes during microwave processing led to increased extractability of phenolics (341 mg GAE/g OP) at higher extraction temperature (60 degrees C) and faster heating strategy (5 min ramp time). Microwave-enzyme-assisted extraction and enzyme-assisted extraction produced phenolic extracts with a higher concentration of phenolic alcohols (22-48 mg/kg) and acids (including hydroxytyrosol) (17-26 mg/kg). Mixtures of pectinase, cellulose and tannase biotransformed OP phenolics thus leading to the production of elenolic acid at 1029 mg/kg.

Ultrashort pulse laser at 1564.3 nm wavelength with E-beam deposited copper nanoparticles saturable absorber

The experimental investigation to explore the generated laser output by using newly developed copper nanoparticle (Cu-NP) as a saturable absorber (SA) at 1550 nm operating region is presented. Accordingly, the light-material interaction between copper nanoparticles and PolyVinyl-Alcohol (PVA) film interpreted onto the modulation depth of Cu-NP was recorded at about 36 (0.14)% wherein the laser ring cavity consists of all-fibre components that are compatible with the proposed operating window. A similar to 1.88 MHz passively soliton mode-locked at 1564.3 nm with pulse-width of 2.85 (0.16) ps and 7.95 (1.7) nJ of maximum pulse energy was successfully generated. Moreover, the high signal to noise ratio of 71 dB while maintaining long term stability as well as low threshold power suggests that the properties owned by pure copper nanoparticles as a great alternative towards conventional saturable absorber.

Compositional diversity and antioxidant properties of essential oils: Predictive models

The contribution of the chemical diversity of common essential oils to the antioxidant properties was investigated. Principal component analyses were performed to cluster essential oils with similar compositions and antioxidant properties, and to correlate their chemical profiles with their antioxidant properties. Moreover, mathematical models were developed for the prediction of antioxidant properties. Oregano, cinnamon, clove, pimento, thyme, and sage exhibited the highest antioxidant properties. When clustering based on the chemical profile, onion, cranberry, melissa, clove, cinnamon, and garlic oils were clustered into the same group. Correlation analysis showed concurrent abundance of some compounds in essential oils, for example, monoterpenes and alcohols contents increase simultaneously, and phenol-rich samples had higher sesquiterpenes content. The statistically significant predictive models were developed. These models revealed that the effects of monoterpenes, ketones and phenols concentration on antioxidant capacity were more significant. Phenols paired with esters and alcohols showed synergistic effects on hydrogen atom transfer-based ORAC value, whereas the opposite was true on single electron transfer-based IC50 when paired with monoterpenes and ketones. The developed predictive models are expected to provide the capability to predict the antioxidant properties of essential oils based on their chemical compositions and to identify combinations of oils that can act synergistically.

New tetradentate Schiff base Cu(II) complexes: synthesis, physicochemical, chromotropism, fluorescence, thermal, and selective catalytic oxidation

Three neutral Cu(II)/n(4)-NNNO Schiff base complexes (1-3) were prepared from the (E)-4-nitro-2-(((2-(piperazin-1-yl)ethyl)imino)methyl)phenol, tetradentate Schiff base (SB) ligand, and the corresponding copper(II) salts. The new SB and its complexes were fully characterized by CHN-EA, standard spectroscopic, thermal, and fluorescence analyses. The formation of the complexes was monitored by EDX, FT-IR, and UV-Vis. The chromotropism studies of the complexes reflected remarkable findings, in which bathochromic solvato- and thermochromism shifts were detected. The turn-off-on halochromism phenomena were observed in the acidic and basic medium. On the other hand, the fluorescence of the free SB ligand was turned off via complexation to the Cu(II) center. In the presence of H2O2 as green oxidant and under mild oxidation catalytic condition, the three complexes successfully catalyzed the formation benzaldehyde from benzyl alcohol.

Interplay between dietary phenolic compound intake and the human gut microbiome in hypertension: A cross-sectional study

In the present study, potential associations between dietary phenolic compounds (PCs), gut microbiota composition and targeted faecal metabolites were identified in a cross-sectional study including grade 1 hypertensive (HT) and normotensive (NT) subjects. We performed comprehensive quantification of PC intake, together with 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the gut microbiota, and faecal and plasma short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) determination. The results showed multiple-way relationships between PCs from several plant-based foods and 25 bacterial taxa previously defined as discriminant biomarkers among groups. Remarkably, coffee PCs were positively associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure, faecal SCFAs, Bacteroides plebeius and Bacteroides coprocola in HT and negatively associated with Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Christensenellaceae R-7 in NT. Olive fruit PCs were positively associated with Ruminococcaceae UCG-010, Christensenellaceae R-7 and plasma SCFAs in NT. These interplays with discriminant bacterial taxa in HT and NT subjects highlight the potential role of specific PCs as gut microbiome modulators in either the pathogenesis or prevention of hypertension.

Disseminated Histoplasmosis Infection in HIV-Negative Patients: Series Case and Literature Review

Histoplasmosis is a deep mycosis distributed worldwide and caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Development countries and underdeveloped countries already considered an endemic disease, and its etiology comes from fungi located in soil contaminated with bird and bat droppings. Habits such as tobacco and alcohol consumption can be factors that can help to the development of disseminated histoplasmosis mainly in immunocompetent patients. Clinical manifestations can include fever, weakness, weight loss, hepatosplenomegaly, mucocutaneous lesions, and ulcer oral lesions. Oral lesions represents a commonly manifestation in the disseminated form of the disease, and it is more frequently observed in immunocompromised patients, mainly on HIV-positive patients. In this study, we presented five cases of disseminated histoplasmosis on HIVnegative patients diagnosed with lesions located in oral cavity and we performed a literature review about cases of disseminated histoplasmosis lesions in head and neck region on HIV-negative patients associating possible factors that may contribute to lesions formatting.

Unhealthy alcohol and drug use is associated with an increased length of stay and hospital cost in patients undergoing major upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic oncologic resections

Background: Few studies evaluate the impact of unhealthy alcohol and drug use on the risk and severity postoperative outcomes after upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic oncologic resections. Methods: The National Inpatient Sample was queried to identify patients undergoing total gastrectomy, esophagectomy, total pancreatectomy, and pancreaticoduodenectomy between 2012 and 2015. Unhealthy alcohol and drug use was assessed by the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, and National Inpatient Sample coder designation. Multivariable regression was used to identify associations between alcohol and drug use and postoperative complication, duration of stay, hospital cost, and mortality. Results: In the study, 59,490 patients met inclusion criteria; 2,060 (3.5%) had unhealthy alcohol use; 1,265 (2.1%) had unhealthy drug use. Postoperative complication rates were higher in patients with alcohol and drug use than in abstainers (67.5% vs 62.8% vs 57.2%; P < .01). On multivariable regression, alcohol use was independently associated with increased risk of a nonwithdrawal complication (odds ratio 1.33 [1.05, 1.68]), and alcohol and drug use were independently associated with increased length of stay (1.54 [0.12, 2.96]) and 2.22 [0.90, 3.55] days) and cost ($5,471 [$60, $10,881] and $4,022 [$402, $7,643]), but not mortality. Conclusion: Unhealthy substance use is associated with increased rates of postoperative complications, prolonged length of stay, and costs in patients undergoing major upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic oncologic resections. Screening and abstinence interventions should be incorporated into the preoperative care pathways for these patients. Published by Elsevier Inc. TEMPO-oxidized cellulose fibers from wheat straw: Effect of ultrasonic pretreatment and concentration on structure and rheological properties of suspensions

Cellulose and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose fibers (TOCF) from the wheat straw were prepared with ultrasonic and chemical treatments to investigate structure and functionalities. Sol-gel transition of TOCF suspensions has been investigated using rheology to unveil the roles of ultrasonic pretreatment and temperature at various concentration. It was found that TOCF extracted with or without ultrasonic pretreatment exhibit similar functional groups in FTIR. However, different crystal structures and thermal stabilities were revealed in XRD and TGA, respectively. The gelation was independent of the ultrasonic pretreatment, while the rheological properties were highly infuenced by the concentration and temperature of the TOCF suspensions. TOCF suspensions presented a strain thinning behavior in large amplitude oscillatory shear tests. Lissajous curves showed that the elastoplastic behavior was predominantly modulated by the fiber concentration and strain amplitude other than the ultrasonic pretreatment. These results could improve the understanding of the relationships between TOCF structure and rheological properties.

Determination and utilization of optimal diesel/n-butanol/biogas derivation for small utility dual fuel diesel engine

Aggregating pollution along with exhausting fossil fuels throughout the world has enforced the inventors to explore for an alternative fuel that can be utilized in diesel engines. Presently, investigators and professionals have originated that biodiesel in association with higher alcohols and gaseous fuel can be an alternative for the current circumstances. Anterior examinations have rendered that biodiesel and higher alcohol along with gaseous fuels can support in upgrading the performance and denigrating detrimental exhaust emanations in a diesel engine. This research aimed to investigate the impacts of engine load, n-butanol concentration, and biogas quantity on emissions and performance characteristics of a small utility compression ignition engine. The different engine load (20-100% of brake power), n-butanol concentration (0-20%) and biogas flow rate (0.5-2 kg/h) were used as input variables. The multi-criteria decision analysis based on response surface method techniques was employed to find the optimal values of engine working conditions fuelled with diesel/n-butanol/biogas fuel blends. In the optimization process, five objective functions (BTE, NOX, CO, UHC, and soot) were considered to be optimized based on the defined criteria. The addition of n-butanol in diesel has shown a favourable impact on biogas operated dual-fuel engine in terms of performance and emissions characteristics. The approach of desirability was applied to obtain the best operating conditions of the engine. The optimum value of engine load, n-butanol concentration, and biogas flow rate were found as 78.89%, 20%, and 1.37 kg/h, respectively. At this condition, the optimal value of BTE, UHC, CO, NOX, and smoke emissions were found to be 19.19%, 0.36g/kWh, 0.04%, 14.51g/kWh, and 22.32%, respectively. A high desirability value of 0.77 was obtained for the suggested condition, showing the efficiency of the derived models for response parameters.

Short-term impact of the COVID-19 confinement measures on health behaviours and weight gain among adults in Belgium

Background In Belgium, confinement measures were introduced on the 13th of March 2020 to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). These measures may affect health behaviours of the population such as eating habits, physical activity and alcohol consumption, which in turn can lead to weight gain resulting in overweight and obesity, increasing the risk of several chronic diseases, but also of severe COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of confinement measures on health behaviours and their associations with weight gain. Methods Data were derived from the second national COVID-19 health survey. Data were collected between the 16th and the 23rd of April 2020. The recruitment of participants was based on snowball sampling via Sciensano’s website, invitations via e-mail and social media. The study sample includes participants aged 18 years and over with no missing data on the variables of interest (n = 28,029). The association between self-reported weight gain and health behaviour changes, adjusted for gender, age group and household composition was assessed through OR’s (95% CI) calculated with logistic regression models, using post-stratification weights. Results Overall, 28.6% reported weight gain after 6 weeks of confinement. Higher odds of weight gain were observed among participants who increased or decreased their consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (OR = 1.39 (1.15-1.68) and 1.29 (1.04-1.60), respectively), among those who increased their consumption of sweet or salty snacks (OR = 3.65 (3.27-4.07)), among those who became less physically active (OR = 1.91 (1.71-2.13)), and among those who increased their alcohol consumption (OR = 1.86 (1.66-2.08)). Conclusions The most important correlates of weight gain during confinement were an increased consumption of sweet or salty snacks and being less physically active. These findings confirm the impact of diet and exercise on short term weight gain and plead to take more action, in supporting people to achieve healthier behaviours in order to tackle overweight and obesity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
