In this work, we demonstrate that pristine graphite oxide (PGO), formed by the oxidation of graphite by the modified Hummers’ method, when still in synthetic mixture, can be re-intercalated by methanol, while keeping its c-axis registry. The as-formed structure contains two molecular layers of methanol, sandwiched between the neighboring graphene oxide (GO) sheets. The typical water-washed and dried GO intercalates only by one molecular layer of methanol. This finding suggests the route for preparing alcohol-intercalated GO straight from PGO, while bypassing water-purification, drying, and intercalating steps. The methanol-purified GO has significantly higher content of organic sulfates, compared to the typical water-purified sample. We stress one more time that the 1620 cm(-1) and 1223 cm(-1) absorption bands in the FTIR spectra of GO are originated by water molecules, and organic sulfates, respectively. Inhibition effect of methanol addition on carbon deposition in propane pyrolysis

Methanol-mixed fuels consisting of methanol, propane, and a small amount of auxiliary solvent are widely used as inexpensive industrial fuels, but the carbon deposition in the pyrolysis of this fuel seriously restrains its popularization. This paper studied the characteristics of gaseous products and carbon deposition in the pure propane and methanol-propane mixture pyrolysis experimentally, analyzed the effect of methanol addition on the reaction path of propane pyrolysis and production rate of key species by using detailed reaction mechanism. Results show that methanol addition can restrain C2H4 converting to C2H2 in the later stage of pyrolysis. The carbon deposition rate and particle diameter increase exponentially with the increase of reaction temperature in both pure propane and methanol-propane blend pyrolysis. Methanol addition can significantly reduce the carbon deposition rate and particle diameter. The reaction path analysis indicates that the main reaction paths forming benzene are C3H3 -> A1 and C4H4 -> I-C6H6 -> A1, and C3H3 is a key specie to form benzene. The pyrolysis of methanol-propane mixture generates more H-2 and H than that of pure propane pyrolysis, which makes most C3H6 convert to C2H4, reduces the amount of C3H3 and suppresses the conversion of C2H4 to C2H2. And then the amount of benzene is reduced significantly and the generation of subsequent PAHs and carbon deposition is inhibited. Lots of H-2 also restrains the hydrogen abstraction from benzene resulting in the delay of the formation of PAHs and carbon deposition. This study is of great significance to research the soot formation in hydrocarbon combustion with alcohol fuel.

Estimating person-to-person variability in VOC emissions from personal care products used during showering

An increasing fraction of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions come from the domestic use of solvents, contained within myriad commonplace consumer products. Emission rates are often poorly characterized and depend significantly on individual behavior and specific product formulation and usage. Time-concentration profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) arising from the use of a representative selection of personal care products (PCPs) during showering are generated, and person-to-person variability in emissions calculated. A panel of 18 participants used a standardized set of products, dosages, and application times during showering in a controlled indoor bathroom setting. Proton transfer mass spectrometry was used to measure the in-room VOC evolution of limonene (representing the sum of monoterpenes), benzyl alcohol, and ethanol. The release of VOCs had reproducible patterns between users, but noticeable variations in absolute peak concentrations, despite identical amounts of material being used. The amounts of VOC emitted to air for one showering activity were as follows: limonene (1.77 mg +/- 42%), benzyl alcohol (1.07 mg +/- 41%), and ethanol (0.33 mg +/- 78%). Real-world emissions to air were between 1.3 and 11 times lower than bottom-up estimates based on dynamic headspace measurements of product emissions rates, likely a result of PCPs being washed away before VOC evaporation could occur.
