Higher alcohols are important flavor substance in alcoholic beverages. The content of alpha-amino nitrogen (alpha-AN) in the fermentation system affects the formation of higher alcohols by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, the effect of alpha-AN concentration on the higher alcohol productivity of yeast was explored, and the mechanism of this effect was investigated through metabolite and transcription sequence analyses. We screened 12 most likely genes and constructed the recombinant strain to evaluate the effect of each gene on high alcohol formation. Results showed that the AGP1, GDH1, and THR6 genes were important regulators of higher alcohol metabolism in S. cerevisiae. This study provided knowledge about the metabolic pathways of higher alcohols and gave an important reference for the breeding of S. cerevisiae with low-yield higher alcohols to deal with the fermentation system with different alpha-AN concentrations in the brewing industry.

Cinnamic alcohol, cinnamic aldehyde, and cinnamic acid are compounds commonly found in the volatile oil of barks of species in the genus Cinnamomum spp. Schaeff., Lauraceae, popularly known as cinnamon. Cinnamon has been used for millennia for both food and medicinal purposes. The present study reviews the main pharmacological studies on cinnamic alcohol and its derivatives, in order to stress out that cinnamon is a natural product, enriched with compounds endowed of important pharmacological effects that can be benefic to the human health. As a literature review using a qualitative approach, covering articles published between 1970 and 2020, the databases consulted were Pubmed, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus. The following descriptors were searched: cinnamon, cinnamic alcohol, cinnamyl alcohol, cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, cinnamic acid, and benzoate. We selected 32 articles studying non-clinical pharmacological aspects of cinnamic alcohol and its derivatives, with emphasis on their central nervous system activities and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial potential. In conclusion, the present review demonstrates non-clinical evidence for cinnamic alcohol and its derivatives as bioactive compounds with pharmacological importance, yet we note the lack of clinical studies.

Synthesis of water-soluble fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) from nanosecond pulsed laser ablation in ethanol

Traditionally, CNPs directly obtained from nanosecond pulsed laser ablation (ns-PLA) in an organic solvent like ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and acetone, possess toxic characteristics with excellent fluorescent properties. However, water-soluble CNPs are found to be non-toxic with weak fluorescent properties. In this study, a post ablation method was utilized to achieve water-soluble fluorescent CNPs. Initially, the colloidal Eth-CNPs solution was obtained from ns-PLA of charcoal powder in the ethanol, which was subsequently dried at room temperature and then dispersed in water to achieve the final water-soluble CNPs (W-CNPs). The High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) image analysis of W-CNPs shows quasi-spherical size particle distribution with an average particle size found to be around 21 nm. XPS studies of charcoal powder and W-CNPs confirm the creation of fluorescent emissive defects state on the surface of W-CNPs under laser ablation in ethanol. Photoluminescence studies of W-CNPs demonstrated the wavelength-dependent PL emission, with peak PL emission in the blue region of the visible spectrum. In vitro studies indicated the non-toxic nature of the W-CNPs at low and high concentration (1, 5 and 10% v/v) in human cardiomyocytes. Herein, the W-CNPs obtained from post-ns-PLA was found to exhibit both blue and green fluorescence in the cardiomyocytes and hence, it can be exploited as a fluoro probe in bioimaging applications.

A new measure of health motivation influencing food choices and its association with food intakes and nutritional biomarkers in European adolescents

Objective: To develop a scale to assess health motivation influencing food choices and to explore its performance in the associations with food intakes and nutritional biomarkers. Design: Psychometric study using cross-sectional self-report questionnaires and nutritional biomarkers. Setting: Multi-centre investigation conducted in ten European cities. Participants: 2954 adolescents who were included in the HELENA study and completed the Food Choices and Preferences (FCP) questionnaire. Results: Nineteen out of 124 items of the FCP questionnaire were in the same dimension. Sixteen presented adequate parameters for the Scale of evaluatiOn of Food choIcEs (SOFIE). The scores were positively associated with the intakes of cereals, dairy products, meats and eggs, and fish, as well as with blood concentrations of vitamin C, beta-carotene, n-3 fatty acids, cobalamin, holo-transcobalamin and folate; scores were negatively associated with the intake of alcohol. Conclusions: SOFIE can improve the assessment of motivation influencing food choices based on items with the best performance and is proposed as a new measure to health-related studies.

Solvent selection strategy for an ISPR (In Situ/In stream product recovery) process: The case of microbial production of p-coumaric acid coupled with a liquid-liquid extraction

This work reports on a solvent selection for the liquid-liquid extraction of p-coumaric acid produced by an engineered strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The solvent selection is a key point of liquid-liquid extraction processes and this work describes a simple strategy to choose a suitable solvent for an in situ or in stream product recovery (ISPR) process during bioconversion. ISPR processes allow to limit the inhibition caused by endproducts accumulation in the fermentation medium. The strategy consists in scoring different solvents based on different criteria weighted according to their significance for the process. Extraction performance, solvent biocompatibility and compatibility with materials, were chosen as essential criteria and the first two were assessed experimentally using distribution coefficients and flow cytometry, respectively. Following this first step, three solvents were selected as candidates for the process of interest and ranked according to the process needs using secondary criteria, namely safety, sourcing and price. Finally, oleyl alcohol obtained the highest score and was therefore considered as the most suitable candidate for an ISPR process with the aim of continuously extracting p-coumaric acid from the fermentation medium. This work is a first step towards the implementation of integrated extractive bioconversion for the production of bio-based molecules such as p-hydroxycinnamic acids and derivatives.

Tribological Rehydration and Its Role on Frictional Behavior of PVA/GO Hydrogels for Cartilage Replacement Under Migrating and Stationary Contact Conditions

Graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel to improve its mechanical and tribological performances for potential articular cartilage replacement application. The compressive mechanical properties, creep resistance, and dynamic mechanical properties of PVA/GO hydrogels with varied GO content were studied. The frictional behavior of PVA/GO hydrogels under stationary and migrating contact configurations during reciprocal and unidirectional sliding movements were investigated. The effects of load, sliding speed, diameter of counterface, and counterface materials on the frictional coefficient of PVA/GO hydrogels were discussed. PVA/0.10wt%GO hydrogel show higher compressive modulus and creep resistance, but moderate friction coefficient. The friction coefficient of PVA/GO hydrogel under stationary and migratory contact configurations greatly depends on interstitial fluid pressurization and tribological rehydration. The friction behavior of PVA/GO hydrogels shows load, speed, and counterface diameter dependence similar to those observed in natural articular cartilage. A low friction coefficient (similar to 0.03) was obtained from PVA/0.10wt%GO hydrogel natural cartilage counter pair. [GRAPHICS] .

High-performance and stable Ru-Pd nanosphere catalyst supported on two-dimensional boron nitride nanosheets for the hydrogenation of furfural via water-mediated protonation

Bimetallic Ru-Pd catalysts are increasingly being investigated for applications in the upgrading of bio-oils to biofuels, owing to their high catalytic activities. Similarly, the recent development of Ru-Pd alloyed nanoparticle (NP) incorporated into hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) catalysts that can be utilized for tuning the selectivity of desired products has also received considerable attention. In the present study, nanoclusters of Ru-0-Pd-0 that self-assemble into spherical-like Ru-Pd bimetallic catalytic sites were successfully grown on the surfaces of BN nanosheets (Ru-Pd/BN NCs) via microwave irradiation for 30 s. HR-TEM investigations revealed the formation of 25 nm sized Ru-Pd nanoparticles comprising <= 2 nm hexagonal closed-pack (hcp) Ru-Pd clusters with Ru crystallites on the BN nanosheets. Further, furfural was effectively converted into furfural alcohol at a lower temperature (150 degrees C) and valuable cyclopentanone was obtained at a higher temperature (>250 degrees C) over the RuPd/BN catalyst through the protonation of water molecules. Furthermore, various solvents namely 2-propanol, toluene, and cyclohexane were also used to achieve the production of furan and tetrahydrofuran over the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst via the decarbonylation of furfural under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, for real-time upgrading, furfural-rich bio-oil produced by the pyrolysis of date-tree biomass was processed over the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst to obtain a maximum of 97% furfural conversion with a 71% FFA yield at 150 degrees C. The stability and reusability of the catalyst were also determined. The results demonstrated that the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst is highly active and chemically stable, and is therefore suitable for industrial applications.

Artificial intelligence in healthcare sector endures a largest share in non-invasive and point-of-care disease diagnosis by interfacing human behaviour through wearable pathway. In a view to enhance the sensing performance of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) film, surface modified PLLA substrates using nanoimprint lithography (NIL) have been implemented. The V+5 stoichiometry of the free standing PLLA/V2O5 films were confirmed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), it was observed that the patterned structure of about similar to 250 nm diameter was uniformly distributed on the surface of PLLA/V2O5 film. The chemiresistive sensing studies proved that the sensor response of V2O5 films on patterned PLLA substrate exhibited enhanced response about similar to 17 towards 75 ppm than the V2O5 film on unpatterned PLLA substrate. We believe that this strategy of patterned free standing PLLA/V2O5 nanosheets will help in fabricating the wearable sensors with better sensing performance.
