Separation of low molecular weight alcohols from water with deep eutectic solvents: Liquid-liquid equilibria and process simulations

Low molecular weight alcohols such as ethanol, propanol and butanol are currently gaining attention owing to their complete combustion and higher calorific value. These low molecular weight alcohols are obtained by ABE (acetone-butanol-ethanol) fermentation, where they are produced within an aqueous phase. Extraction is contemplated as one of the effective methods for the separation of these lower alcohols from aqueous phase through a solvent. The solvent explored here relates to the formulation of Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) comprising of DL-menthol (Hydrogen Bond Donor) + decanoic acid (Hydrogen Bond Acceptor). The current work adopts a multiscale approach leading with DES preparation and subsequent batch scale Liquid-Liquid Equilibria (LLE) measurement and finally concludes through process simulation studies. The experimental LLE data of DES (1)-Alcohol (2)-Water (3) gave a higher affinity towards alcohol and lower solubility with water. The experimental results were thereafter regressed with the NRTL model using the additional constraint where a positive tangent plane distance is imposed for all the tie lines within the Gibbs energy of mixing (G(m)) surface. The average absolute RMSD values correlated via NRTL and COSMO-SAC model were found to be 0.003 and 0.008 respectively. Here, we report a class of ligands based on oxalohydrazide cores and N-amino pyrrole and N-amino indole units that generates long-lived copper catalysts for couplings that form the C-O bonds in biaryl ethers. These Cu-catalyzed coupling of phenols with aryl bromides occurred with turnovers up to 8000, a value which is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than those of prior couplings to form biaryl ethers and nearly an order of magnitude higher than those of any prior copper-catalyzed coupling of aryl bromides and chlorides. This ligand also led to copper systems that catalyze the coupling of aryl chlorides with phenols and the coupling of aryl bromides and iodides with primary benzylic and aliphatic alcohols. A wide variety of functional groups including nitriles, halides, ethers, ketones, amines, esters, amides, vinylarenes, alcohols and boronic acid esters were tolerated, and reactions occurred with aryl bromides in pharmaceutically related structures.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is one of the foremost public health problems. Alcohol is also frequently co-abused with cocaine. There is a huge unmet need for the treatment of AUD and/or cocaine co-abuse. We recently demonstrated that skin grafts generated from mouse epidermal stem cells that had been engineered by CRISPR-mediated genome editing could be transplanted onto mice as a gene delivery platform. Here, we show that expression of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) gene delivered by epidermal stem cells attenuated development and reinstatement of alcohol-induced drug-taking and seeking as well as voluntary oral alcohol consumption. GLP1 derived from the skin grafts decreased alcohol-induced increase in dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens. In exploring the potential of this platform in reducing concurrent use of drugs, we developed a novel co-grafting procedure for both modified human butyrylcholinesterase (hBChE)- and GLP1-expressing cells. Epidermal stem cell-derived hBChE and GLP1 reduced acquisition of drug-taking and toxicity induced by alcohol and cocaine co-administration. These results imply that cutaneous gene delivery through skin transplants may add a new option to treat drug abuse and co-abuse.

Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate Related Hypoglycemia In A Non-Diabetic COVID-19 Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review

Objective: Hypoglycemia is a serious adverse effect of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) which is very rare in non-diabetic patients. This case report describes a non-diabetic patient without any other chronic diseases, who experienced mild hypoglycemia related to HCQ used for COVID-19 treatment. Methods: All etiologies causing hypoglycemia were investigated and a 72-hour fast test was performed. Results: A 34-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with a high fever, cough, and chest pain. The result of his COVID-19 PCR test was positive. He received HCQ for 10 days for the treatment of COVID-19 infection. He experienced fatigue, dizziness, severe headache, weakness and feeling of hunger after discontinuation of HCQ during his isolation at home. Before COVID-19 infection, he never experienced hypoglycemia symptoms. He did not have a history of chronic diseases, drug use, alcohol consumption, or smoking. A 72-hour fasting test was performed. He complained about headache and weakness during the 72-hour test period. The PG level was determined as 49 mg/dl during these symptoms. Concurrent insulin and C-peptide levels were <2 mU/mL and 0.553 ng/mL, respectively. ACTH, cortisol, growth hormones, liver and kidney function tests were normal. HbA1c level was 4.7% (28 mmol/mol) (Normal Range %4,5-5,7). Conclusion: Hypoglycemia may be observed as an adverse effect of HCQ used for COVID-19 infection even in patients without chronic diseases and comorbidities. We must be careful while using HCQ for these patients and must warn them about this effect. The warning about hypoglycemia effect of HCQ must be added to COVID-19 treatment guidelines. The characteristics of nano-fillers in a polymer matrix have a significant influence on the microstructural, thermo-mechanical, optical, and conductivity properties of organic-inorganic nanocomposites. In this study, we investigated the influence of inorganic component – ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) on the characteristics and properties of PVA-ZnO nanocomposites which have been applied as an insulation layer in a resistive switching (RS) device. Three nanocomposites originating from three different types of ZnO NPs exhibit different RS characteristics: Abnormal volatile RS is observed with the similar to 20-nm-sized spherical-like NPs (Z1) and 15-20-nm-sized mixed shaped NPs (Z2), whereas normal nonvolatile bipolar RS is observed with the 50-150-nm-sized hexagonal rod-like NPs (Z3). The concentration and size of the intrinsic defects of the ZnO NPs as well as the thickness of the PVA-ZnO interface are responsible for the different charge transport paths, operating voltage ranges, and ON/OFF switching ratios of the memory devices. Simultaneously, the distinct sizes and morphologies of the ZnO NPs can affect the nanoholes among the PVA chains and induce various fractional free volumes in the nanocomposites. It may modify the conductivity of the nanocomposite layer or the resistance ratio of the memory devices. Understanding the influence of ZnO NPs size, morphology, and defects on the characteristics of RS of PVA-ZnO nanocomposites can help in the selection and management of functional applications, especially in the data storage field. Conservation of ‘Palmer’ mango with an edible coating of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and beeswax

Mango is a tropical fruit presenting intense postharvest metabolism. This study evaluated the effect of edible coatings of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and beeswax in concentrations of 10, 20, and 40% in ‘Palmer’ mangoes stored for 15 days at 21 degrees C. The coatings controlled ripening, maintaining peel and pulp colors, firmness, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, sugars, ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, beta-carotene, and antioxidant activity. Also, they reduced weight loss, oxidative stress, and the anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) incidence, without inducing alcohol dehydrogenase activity, which suggests that coated fruit did not ferment. Treatment with 20% beeswax was the most suitable for industrial applications, increasing in six days the mangoes shelf life.

Electrocatalytic methane oxidation on Co3O4- incorporated ZrO2 nanotube powder

The activation of methane (CH4) gas to produce more valuable liquid hydrocarbons has long been a challenging issue in catalytic research. Electrochemical oxidation is one of the main methods of methane activation and can usually proceed at in ambient temperature. However, the lack of efficient electrocatalysts limits the practical application of this strategy. In this study, ZrO2 nanotube powder with a high specific surface area was decorated with Co3O4 nanoparticles and used as the electrochemical anode for the partial oxidation of methane to generate C3 alcohol products. The Co3O4 nanoparticles formed on outer the surface of the ZrO2 nanotubes offer an accessible diffusion route for methane gas, resulting in a low onset potential for electrochemical methane activation. A high production rate of approximately 2416 mu mol g(cat)(-1) h(-1) was obtained at 1.6 V (vs RHE) after 12 h of reaction. This nanostructure engineering strategy contributes to the enhancement of catalytic activity for electrochemical methane oxidation with the production of higher alcohols, which could provide a new catalyst synthesis strategy for researchers.

Alcohol consumption and risk of stomach cancer: A meta-analysis

Stomach cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. The relationship between alcohol consumption and the risk of stomach cancer remains unclear. Epidemiology studies investigating this relationship have shown inconsistent findings. A meta-analysis was performed to explore the association between alcohol consumption and increased stomach cancer risk. Eighty-one epidemiology studies, including 68 case-control studies and 13 cohort studies, were included in this study. A significant association was found between alcohol consumption and increased risk of stomach cancer (OR = 1.20, 95% CI 1.12-1.27). To explore the source of the significant heterogeneity (p < 0.05, I-2 = 86%), analysis was stratified by study type (case-control study and cohort study), control type (hospital-based control and population-based control), gender (male, female, and mix), race (White and Asian), region (United States, Sweden, China, Japan), subsite of stomach cancer, and type of alcohol. The stratified analyses found that region and cancer subsite are major sources of the high heterogeneity. The inconsistent results in different regions and different subsites might be related to smoking rates, Helicobacter pylori infection, obesity, and potential genetic susceptibility. The positive association between drinking and increased risk of stomach cancer is consistent in stratified analyses. The dose-response analysis showed a clear trend that a higher daily intake of alcohol is associated with a higher risk of stomach cancer. Influence of calophyllum inophyllum and Jojoba oil methyl ester blended with n-pentanol additive upon overall performance, combustion and emission characteristics of a TDI engine operated in natural aspirated mode

The present manuscript briefly elaborates the performance, combustion and emission behaviour of a turbocharged direct injection diesel engine operated in dual mode where calophyllum inophyllum and Jojoba oil methyl ester are the injected fuel while in second case the above said test fuel blends were mixed homogeneously with n-pentanol that acts as an additive during the experimentation. The main objective of using n-pentanol is its five straight chain carbon atoms that has better possibility of homogeneous blending with biodiesel blends due to its high cetane number, stability and density in contrast to other alcohol based additives helping in improving engine performance and diminished exhaust emissions. During the experimentation, engine parameters like compression ratio (17.5:1), injection timing (21 degrees bTDC), injector opening pressure (220 bar), speed (1500 rpm) were kept constant. Results concluded CIME20-P20 blend to be reliable and potential alternative fuel to partially replace conventional diesel fuel. Considering performance and emission characteristics calophyllum inophyllum oil methyl ester and pentanol blend (CIME20-P20) depicts a higher brake specific fuel consumption of 3.41% while lower exhaust gas temperature and brake thermal efficiency of 13.46% and 1.18% in contrast to diesel fuel. Moving on to emission analysis, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen and smoke opacity for CIME20-P20 were 57.02%, 59.37%, 17.39% and 41.53% lower than conventional diesel fuel. Hence, coming to the overall summary, CIME20-P20 depicts better performance and diminished exhaust emission thereby making it more potential to substitute the conventional fuel without any engine alteration for better environmental sustainability and energy security.

Infrared stealth nanofibrous composite with thermal stability and mechanical flexibility

Materials with low infrared emissivity, good thermal stability and mechanical performance are of major concern for the infrared stealth technology. By electrospinning technology, three layers of CNT/Al/PA6 were deposited alternatively with three layers of polyurethane PU (termed as [(CNT/Al/PA6)/PU](3). To improve the thermal stability, a layer of poly (vinyl alcohol)/silica (PVA/SiO2) was also electrospun and sintered, which was sandwiched between the surface layer of [(CNT/Al/PA6)/PU](3) and the bottom layer of PU. The layered composite of [(CNT/Al/PA6)/PU](3)-PVA/SiO2-PU presents a low infrared emissivity of 0.71, and good thermal stability as revealed by change of the thermal infrared images with time on a hot stage. Uniaxial tensile tests also reveal the mechanical flexibility for the composite. The combined durable infrared stealth performance and excellent mechanical properties infrared stealth and mechanical behavior render the layered composite great potential in the infrared stealth camouflage applications.
