Promotion effect of La on oxygen vacancy formation over Zn-Cr based catalyst for isobutanol synthesis from syngas

A series of catalysts were designed and synthesized via doping lanthanum into ZnCr oxide to realize efficient synthesis of isobutanol from syngas. By applying a combination of characterizations (XRD, TEM, EPR, XPS and in situ FT-IR) and DFT calculations, the effects of lanthanum promoter on catalyst structure and catalytic performance were investigated. With the doping of lanthanum, ZnCrLax composite oxides with a novel catalyst structure were constructed, in which Zn atom at tetrahedron site was partly substituted by doping La atom. The presence of this structure enhanced the formation of more oxygen vacancy sites and further benefitted the CO activation. In addition, formate intermediate was easier to generate and exhibited superior stability over ZnCrLax surface thus leaded to remarkably promoted catalytic activity. The ZnCrLa0.05 catalyst achieved optimum total alcohols selectivity of 61%, and the fraction of isobutanol reached as high as 24.6% under CO conversion of 23%.

Quantitative determination of osteopontin in bovine, buffalo, yak, sheep and goat milk by Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and stable isotope dimethyl labeling

Osteopontin (OPN) is a multifunctional protein present in different tissues, body fluids and milk. Different milk has different level of OPN content. To determine the amount of osteopontin in bovine, buffalo, yak, sheep and goat milk, we developed an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLCMS/MS) method to detect an osteopontin signature peptide. The signature peptides selected by searching Uniprot database for trypsin digested osteopontin. The sample preparation procedure includes trypsin digestion, dimethyl labeling of tryptic peptides, purification and concentration of labeled tryptic peptide with solid phase extraction. The limit of detection and limit of quantification are 0.5 mg L-1 and 2.0 mg L-1, respectively. The method has satisfactory analytical performance with a linearity of R-2 >= 0.998, recoveries of 103.7-111.0%, and precision of 1.8-6.2%. It is also validated and successfully applied to quantifying osteopontin content in bovine, buffalo, yak, sheep and goat milk.

The unparalleled matching between the experimentally observed lattice constant and that provided by the proposed cation distribution as well as Rietveld refinement confirms the amounts of cadmium entering tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel lattice. All the samples of cadmium substituted cobalt ferrite assure their suitability for high frequency application with the pertinent properties.

Au coated ZnO/MWCNTs nanocomposites film-induced four-wave-mixing effect for multi-wavelength generation in erbium-doped fiber laser

High optical nonlinearity of nanostructured materials has been attested as a reliable technique for the generation of a multi-wavelength fiber laser. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a simple and efficient method for generating continuous-wave (CW) multi-wavelength erbium-doped laser (EDFL) using a nonlinear effect of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly nonlinear nanocomposite film. A nanocomposite film containing gold nanostars coated zinc-oxide nanorods/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZnO-NRs@Au NSs/MWCNTs) embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer was prepared, characterized, and then incorporated into the laser cavity to induce the FWM effect. Benefiting from the FWM processes, the induced intensity-dependent gain alleviates the intense gain-competition in the EDFL and increases the number of lasing wavelengths. A five-lasing line with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 36.3 dBm has been observed by appropriately adjusting the pump strength to 300 mW. Repeated measurements verified the high stability of the laser operating at room temperature with less than 3 dBm fluctuations on output power and 0.21 nm lasing wavelength drifts for all wavelengths cases. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first demonstration of multi-wavelength fiber laser utilizing ZnO-NRs@Au NSs/MWCNTs nanocomposite. The results reveal the excellent nonlinear optical properties of the prepared nanocomposite and lay a foundation for its application in the generation of a multi-wavelength fiber laser.

Use of Hanseniaspora guilliermondii and Hanseniaspora opuntiae to enhance the aromatic profile of beer in mixed-culture fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Beer production is predominantly carried out by Saccharomyces species, such as S. cerevisiae and S. pastorianus. However, the introduction of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in the brewing process is now seen as a promising strategy to improve and differentiate the organoleptic profile of beer. In this study, 17 non-Saccharomyces strains of 12 distinct species were isolated and submitted to a preliminary sensory evaluation to determine their potential for beer bioflavouring. Hanseniaspora guilliermondii IST315 and H. opuntiae IST408 aroma profiles presented the highest acceptability and were described as having ‘fruity’ and ‘toffee’ notes, respectively. Their presence in mixed-culture fermentations with S. cerevisiae US-05 did not influence attenuation and ethanol concentration of beer but had a significant impact in its volatile composition. Notably, while both strains reduced the total amount of ethyl esters, H. guilliermondii IST315 greatly increased the concentration of acetate esters, especially when sequentially inoculated, leading to an 8.2-fold increase in phenylethyl acetate (‘rose’, ‘honey’ aroma) in the final beverage. These findings highlight the importance of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in shaping the aroma profile of beer and suggest a role for Hanseniaspora spp. in improving it.

Evaluation of polyvinyl alcohol and high calcium fly ash based geopolymer for the improvement of soft Bangkok clay

Soft Bangkok clay (SC) is recognized as a problematic soil in Thailand. This research investigates the possibility of using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and high calcium fly ash (FA) geopolymers to improve the strength of SC in deep soil mixing applications. The liquid alkaline activator (L) was composed of sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The studied influence factors included FA content, water content, L content, Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio, PVA concentration, PVA content, and curing time. Strength development and microstructure in the PVA-FA geopolymer stabilized SC were evaluated via the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test. The optimum ingredient considering workability and cost of FA geopolymer stabilized SC was found to be at a mix design of LOLL, Na2SiO3/NaOH = 1, FA = 40% and L/FA = 0.6, whereby a 28-day UCS of 1026 kPa was attained. The optimum PVA content and PVA concentrations were found at 15% and 4%. The 7-day and 28-day UCS values were improved by PVA up to 40% and 42% compared to those of the specimen without PVA, respectively. The outcome of this research will promote the usage of PVA-FA geopolymer as an alternative green soil stabilizer alternative to Portland cement for a DM improved soft Bangkok clay.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of symptomatic vertebral hemangioma with long-term follow-up

There is a paucity of literature on vertebroplasty in hemangioma. The effectiveness with short-term and long-term follow-up is an important insight for research. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and the long-term efficacy of vertebroplasty in the treatment of the patient with symptomatic vertebral hemangioma. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. The outcome was evaluated by immediate post-procedure and 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years of follow-up clinical status of the patients. The significance was determined by using a paired t-test between the pre-procedure and post-procedure severity of pain, activity score, and analgesic. The P-value < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. Results: A total of 38 vertebroplasties were performed in 34 patients. Additionally, the embolization of residual soft tissue was performed in 4 patient and Percutaneous alcohol injection for posterior elements involvement was performed in 9 patients. Immediate after the procedure, 44.12% of patients became asymptomatic, 38.23% of patients showed significant improvement, 11.77% of patients remained static and 2.94% of patients deteriorated and needed laminectomy. The complication rate was 29.4%, but only 2 patients were symptomatic and needed surgical decompression. There was significant relief of pain (P < 0.05), reduced analgesic intake (P < 0.05), and increased activity (P < 0.05) immediately after the procedure, 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years follow-up. Conclusion: PVP is an effective therapeutic option for the treatment of VH with fewer complications. The additional procedures like preprocedural embolization and percutaneous alcohol injection enhance the outcome and avoid complicated surgical interventions. The optimal reflection loss value of the foam reaches -65.14 dB with a thickness of 3.0 mm. The foam also demonstrate high photo-thermal conversion performance with its surface temperature up to 97 degrees C after irradiation under 1 Sun for 5 min. Additionally, the foam shows superior thermal insulation comparing with the commercial polyvinyl alcohol and polyurethane foams. This study may offer a promising approach to develop ultralight and high-performance microwave absorber with great potential for multifunctional applications.
