To solve the trade-off problem among ionic conductivity, mechanical and chemical stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs), quaternized chitosan (QCS) was first prepared and then was blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to improve mechanical strength of QCS. Afterwards, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical flower-like layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were prepared via one-pot ethylene glycol-assisted solvothermal method, and then were incorporated into QCS/PVA blend matrix to fabricate composite AEMs. By constructing 3D hierarchical structure, the active sites of LDH nanosheets are fully exposed, thus impressive ion conductivity, alkali and fuel resistant ability of LDH nanosheets can be rationally utilized. The composite membrane displayed the maximum OH- conductivity of 25.7 mS cm(-1), which was 48.6 % higher than that of the pristine membrane. Alkaline stability measurement proved that the composite membranes kept residual ionic conductivity of as high as 92 % after immersion in a 2 M KOH for 100 h. Due to the decreased methanol permeability and increased conductivity, the composite membrane with 6% LDHs content exhibited a peak power density of 73 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C, whereas the pristine membrane demonstrated only 40 mW cm(-2).

Autoignition characterization of methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol over a wide range of operating conditions in LTC/HCCI

In this work, the autoignition properties of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, and sec-butanol are studied in HCCI and compared. Experiments were performed, characterizing the sensitivity of these fuels to equivalence ratio, intake temperature, residual fraction, intake pressure, and engine speed. Under all of the low boost pressure operating conditions considered (1.15 bar), the order of reactivity of each fuel from low to high is: isopropanol, sec-butanol, ethanol approximate to n-propanol approximate to isobutanol, methanol, n-butanol. n-butanol was less sensitive to changes in intake temperature than the other six fuels at low boost conditions. The required intake temperature to maintain a constant combustion phasing decreased significantly for n-butanol with intake pressure due to emergent intermediate temperature heat release (ITHR). At an intake pressure of 1.95 bar, secbutanol showed some amount of ITHR which decreased its sensitivity to intake temperature. However, secbutanol still maintained its high autoignition resistance, unlike n-butanol. Isobutanol did not show any ITHR at this intake temperature, though did show a decrease in intake temperature sensitivity. With the exception of n-butanol, the behavior and sensitivity of each alcohol fuel to the wide array of operating conditions considered were similar, with small differences in autoignition resistance. This means that these six fuels could potentially be blended and used interchangeably with little change to their autoignition characteristics.

Drinking and alcohol-related problems among at-risk adolescents: The role of protective behavioral strategies

Introduction: Protective Behavioral Strategies (PBS) are an alcohol-specific cognitive-behavioral strategies that may be employed before, during and/or after drinking, in order to reduce alcohol consumption and related consequences, particularly in the at-risk populations. Previous research on PBS was limited to North American college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of PBS use in a sample of Polish adolescents attending Special Educational Centers (SEC). Method: Data were collected from a nationwide sample of 12-19 year-old (Mean = 15.8; SD = 1.22) students attending SEC in Poland (N = 1585; about 33% female). The self-administered anonymous questionnaires were completed on-site in the SEC. PBS were measured by the authors adaptation of the PBSS-20. Alcohol-related problems were assessed by the Polish adaptation of the measures used in the MINI-KID tool. Alcohol use was measured by a single question on drinking frequency. These two latter variables were measured in the past year timeframe. Hierarchical regression models were used to test the main and interaction effects of employing PBS (total and subscales scores) on alcohol-related problems, after adjusting for demographics (gender, family composition and type of SEC) and alcohol use. Results: The majority (about 94%) of study participants reported employment of some PBS. Regression analyses indicated that PBS use was associated with reduced risk of alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. We found that PBS significantly moderated the relationship between alcohol use and alcohol-related problems, for PBS total scale (F-change (1,1555) = 15.96, p < .001) and one of the PBS subscale: Limiting/Stopping Drinking (F-change (1,1555) = 4.80, p < .029). Findings were discussed within the results of PBS literature and resilience theory framework. Conclusion: The use of PBS helps to reduce alcohol-related problems among adolescents attending SEC. Implementation of tailored interventions that teach PBS among vulnerable adolescents may be an effective way to strengthen adolescent self-protection, reduce risky alcohol use and related negative consequences. Training emotion regulation processes in alcohol-abstinent individuals: A pilot study

The study aimed to assess whether abstinent individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD) would benefit from enhanced emotional regulation (ER) strategies using the affect regulation training (ART) program based on weekly sessions comprising psycho-education, muscle and respiratory relaxation, awareness, acceptance and tolerance, compassionate personal support, emotion analysis and modification. Seventy-two participants with AUD benefited from ART and were compared on their ER ability, mindfulness, and their experience of abstinence to 40 participants not receiving the program, before it, at the end, and 6 months after. Improvements in ER were observed, particularly in positive centration, action centration or self-blame and in mindfulness abilities after the program and six months later. In addition, by comparing participants who received the program with a short ( < 18 months) or long ( > 18 months) abstinence duration, the results showed a greater decrease in the use of non-adaptive strategies, a greater increase in adaptive strategies and mindfulness abilities in short-term abstinent individuals. These results demonstrate improvement in ER skills after training in people who were abstinent from alcohol. ART is effective for consolidating abstinence and should be used especially at the beginning of withdrawal to promote the rapid implementation of new ER strategies.

Volatile compounds sorption during the aging of Chinese Liquor (Baijiu) using Pottery Powder

Pottery jar is the preferred storage vessel for aging baijiu, Chinese liquor, and it could sorb liquor micro-compounds. The objective of this work was to identify the sorption of liquor micro-compounds onto pottery powder, and gained insights regarding the sorption processes and mechanism. The sorption of liquor micro-compounds onto pottery powder of different sizes was studied using different kinetic models. The results showed that the sorption capacity varied among particle size of pottery powder, which also affected equilibrium time. The sorption process could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the external diffusion was the rate-limiting step. Liquor volatiles in pottery powder at equilibrium were characterized, which detected alcohols, esters, acids, and furan by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). These findings demonstrated pottery could not only cause subtractive changes that occur to liquor during the aging period, but also as a vector for transferring aromas sorbed when reused.

MoS2 doping by atomic layer deposition of high-k dielectrics using alcohol as process oxidants

We developed doping technique of transition metal dichalcogenides based on atomic layer deposition (ALD) of oxide thin films. In this study, we deposited ALD Al2O3 overlayer using various oxidant including iso-propyl alcohol (IPA) and ethanol and investigated the doping effects depending on the choice of oxidant for ALD process. The doping effects were investigated by the change in the performance of bottom-gated MoS2 field effect transistors. Experimental results indicate that Al2O3 overlayer deposited using IPA as ALD reactant produces more efficient n-type doping effect compared to ethanol. Moreover, doping was effectively controlled by modulating atomic layer deposition process. ALD process using effective oxidant material is expected to be practically used for realizing the fabrication of threshold voltage-controllable transistors or further applications such as diodes.

The contributions of everyday and major experiences of racial discrimination to current alcohol use and regular smoking in Black adults: Considering variation by demographic characteristics and family history

Background: Racial discrimination has consistently been linked to elevated alcohol use and smoking in Black adults, but the independent contributions of everyday and major experiences of discrimination have rarely been investigated. The present study aimed to identify variation in magnitude of the links between each type of racial discrimination with current frequency of alcohol use and regular smoking by demographic characteristics and family history of problem drinking/regular smoking in Black adults in the U.S. Methods: Data were drawn from 4462 adults (29.40% Afro Caribbean, 70.60% African American; 63.20% female) in a nationally representative sample of Black Americans. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to predict current frequency of alcohol use and regular smoking using the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) and Major Experiences of Discrimination Scale (MEDS), testing for interactions with demographic characteristics and family history. Results: In the alcohol model, an EDS by education level interaction was observed: OR = 1.04 (CI:1.02-1.07) for < high school; OR = 0.95 (CI:0.92-0.98) for >= high school. MEDS was independently associated with alcohol use (OR = 1.11, CI:1.04-1.18). Validity and measurement invariance of the Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment incentive salience domain among treatment-seekers with alcohol use disorder

Incentive salience, or the attribution of motivational value to stimuli, is a biopsychological process that is disrupted in alcohol use disorder (AUD). The Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment (ANA) is a framework to characterize heterogeneity in addiction and establish a common assessment battery for research and clinical use. The ANA framework hypothesizes three constructs that correspond to processes in the etiology, course, and treatment of addiction: incentive salience, negative emotionality, and executive function. The current study extends prior findings on the ANA by validating the incentive salience construct among participants (n = 563) in a multisite prospective study of individuals entering treatment for AUD. We used confirmatory factor analysis to test a one-factor model of incentive salience. Indicators included items assessing perception of urges to drink from the Alcohol Dependence Scale, Impaired Control Scale, and Marlatt Relapse Interview. Results indicated the one-factor model fit the data well (chi(2) (12) = 19.42, p = .08; RMSEA = 0.034 [90% CI: 0.000, 0.060], CFI = 0.992) and was measurement invariant across sex. Incentive salience was associated with drinking patterns (e.g., drinks per day, r = 0.447 [95% CI: 0.379, 0.514]); reasons for drinking (urges/temptation r = 0.529 [95% CI: 0.460, 0.599]); testing personal control, r = 0.384 (95% CI: 0.308, 0.461); social pressure, r = 0.549 (95% CI: 0.481, 0.617); and family history of AUD, r = 0.134. The incentive salience factor demonstrated greater predictive validity for drinking outcomes compared to alternative preexisting scales. Overall, this study provides support for the construct validity and measurement invariance of the ANA incentive salience construct in a sample of individuals seeking AUD treatment.

Alkylation of a hydrophilic photosensitizer enhances the contact-dependent photo-induced oxidation of phospholipid membranes

Lipophilic photosensitizers able to photo-induce lipid oxidation in biomembranes are, in general, much more efficient than hydrophilic ones; acting through the formation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), which oxidizes the fatty acid double bonds (type II mechanism). Here we investigate the binding and photosensitizing properties of 4-(decyloxy)pteridin-2-amine (O-decyl-Ptr) using unilamellar vesicles of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), a phospholipid with monounsaturated fatty acids. By means of molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, we showed that O-decyl-Ptr binds to the membrane in a localization that favors the direct reaction of the triplet excited state of O-decyl-Ptr with DOPC double bonds. As a consequence, although O-1(2) is formed, O-decyl-Ptr acts mainly as a contact-dependent photosensitizer, meaning through radical formation (type I mechanism). Mass spectrometry analysis of vesicles irradiated in the presence of O-decyl-Ptr, demonstrated the generation of alcohols (LOH), ketones (LO) and hydroperoxides (LOOH). In agreement with the mechanistic hypothesis proposed, LOH and LO (type I photooxidation products) are formed faster than LOOH (type II photooxidation product). Interestingly, no short-chain oxidized products were detected. Accordingly, membrane fluctuations and formation of filaments and buds are observed during in-situ photo-activation of O-decyl-Ptr in giant unilamellar vesicles due to changes in membrane spontaneous curvature. Finally, we evaluated the effect of the photochemical processes studied at a cellular level and demonstrated in experiments of viability of mammalian cells that O-decyl-Ptr has important photodynamic properties. Similar experiments performed using the hydrophilic photosenstizer pterin (Ptr) show that alkylation leads to a striking increase in the efficiency of photosensitized lipid oxidation.
