Electrochemical activation to enhance the volumetric performance of carbon nanotube electrodes

In recent years, the floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD) method has established itself as one of the most commercially viable methods to produce carbon nanotubes (CNTs). However, at the final stage of the FCCVD process, densification of the web of CNTs to form a sheet causes a significant loss in the active surface area of the CNTs. This loss of surface area reduces the density of active materials that can be infiltrated into the CNT sheet. Reducing the amount of active material in the sheet reduces the charge storage capacity and causes low volumetric performance for CNT sheet in energy storage applications. Here, we are reporting the use of an electrochemical activation technique to chemically functionalize the CNT surface and recover the lost surface area. Chemical functionalization separates the CNTs and thereby increases the density of active materials that can be integrated into the CNT sheet. In order to avoid deterioration of the CNT structure from excessive electrochemical activation, we have optimized the procedure by comparing the performance of four samples of CNT sheets prepared using different numbers of cycles of electrochemical activation (5, 10, 20, 40 cycles). The performance of the sheet was analyzed using specific capacitance measurement, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. In addition, the Randle-Sevcik plot was used to select the CNTs with the largest activated surface area and electrochemical specific capacitance (150F/g). Further analysis such as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was also carried out to unveil a 5% increase of the various oxygen-containing functional groups at the surface of the activated CNTs. Polyaniline (PANI) was then deposited on the surface of the electrochemically altered CNTs via an oxidation polymerization process to create a CNT-PANI composite material. A fully fabricated device with CNT-PANI electrodes and Polyvinylidene fluoride – 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (PVDF-EMIMBF4) electrolyte showed a significant specific capacitance improvement over a device with Poly(vinyl alcohol) -Sulfuric acid (PVA-H2SO4) electrolyte. The PVDF-EMIMBF4 capacitor device had a volumetric energy density of 833.3 mu M/h/cm(3) at a current density of 0.5 mA/cm(2). The capacitor has good mechanical flexibility and high capacitance retention (75% after 5000 cycles), which show the advantages of the electrochemical activation method.

Reversible modifications of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-polymerization derived end groups are usually limited to reductive degradable disulfide conjugates. Quantitative end group modification is confirmed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and mass spectrometry, while reversible release of attached compounds under physiological reductive conditions is successfully monitored by diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy and thin layer chromatography. Additionally, this concept is further expanded to protein-reactive, self-immolative carbonate species that enable reversible bioconjugation of lysozyme and alpha-macrophage mannose receptor (MMR) nanobodies as model proteins. Altogether, self-immolative RAFT end group modifications can form the new basis for reversible introduction of various functionalities to polymer chain ends including protein bioconjugates and, thus, opening novel opportunities for stimuli-responsive polymer hybrids.

Electrospun poly (vinyl alcohol) nanofibers incorporating caffeic acid/cyclodextrins through the supramolecular assembly for antibacterial activity

Here, we prepared the solid inclusion complexes between Caffeic acid (CA) and Cyclodextrins (beta- and gamma-CDs) (CA/CDs) that were effectively embedded into Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) electrospun nanofibers via electrospinning technique to enhanced solubility and antibacterial activity. In tested Cyclodextrins are beta and gamma-CDs with CA in the ratio of 1:1 resulting in the formation of CA/CDs by co-precipitation method. The physical properties of CA/CDs were examined by FT-IR, UV, and Raman Spectroscopy. The phase solubility test showed a much higher solubility of CA due to inclusion complexes (ICs). Furthermore, CA/beta-CD and CA/gamma-CD perfected achieved 0.70:1 and 0.80:1 the molar ratio of ICs, confirmed by NMR studies. The fiber size distribution, average diameter, and morphology features were evaluated by SEM analysis. The dissolution profile of PVA/CA and PVA/CA/CDs were tested within 150 min, resulting in CA dissolved in PVA/CA/CDs slightly higher than PVA/CA nanofibers due to enhanced solubility of ICs. Moreover, PVA/CA/CDs exhibit high antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria of E-Coli and gram-negative bacteria of S. aureus. Drug release from hydroxypropylcellulose gels cannot be statistically predicted from their viscometric and initial viscoelastic properties

This study questioned whether rheological properties can predict drug (metronidazole) release from Hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) platforms. Viscometric and viscoelastic properties of aqueous, alcohols/diols and mixed solvent HPC solutions and gels were determined using viscometry and oscillatory analysis. Drug release was conducted at pH 7.4 under sink conditions. Relationships between rheological parameters and drug release were modelled using multiple linear stepwise regression. Viscometry identified ethanol and water as good solvents for HPC. Diol solvents were predicted to exhibit greater interactions with HPC (COSMO modelling) but possessed lowest intrinsic viscosities. Pentanediol or ethylene glycol prepared gels exhibited greatest elasticity. No relationships were observed between dilute solution properties and initial gel viscoelasticity. Drug release from HPC gels occurred via gel erosion and diffusion. No relationships were observed between initial gel viscoelasticity and drug release and thus, for gel platforms that undergo erosion in aqueous media, drug release cannot be predicted from initial gel viscoelasticity.

Electrochemical Arylation of Aldehydes, Ketones, and Alcohols: from Cathodic Reduction to Convergent Paired Electrolysis

Arylation of carbonyls, one of the most common approaches toward alcohols, has received tremendous attention, as alcohols are important feedstocks and building blocks in organic synthesis. Despite great progress, there is still a great gap to develop an ideal arylation method featuring mild conditions, good functional group tolerance, and readily available starting materials. We now show that electrochemical arylation can fill the gap. By taking advantage of synthetic electrochemistry, commercially available aldehydes (ketones) and benzylic alcohols can be readily arylated to provide a general and scalable access to structurally diverse alcohols (97 examples, >10 gram-scale). More importantly, convergent paired electrolysis, the ideal but challenging electrochemical technology, was employed to transform low-value alcohols into more useful alcohols. Detailed mechanism study suggests that two plausible pathways are involved in the redox neutral alpha-arylation of benzylic alcohols.

Depressive symptoms among older adults with HIV in Namibia: The role of social support and spirituality

Background: More than 60% of older adults living with HIV reside in sub-Saharan Africa. Namibia has one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates. This study examined the association between social support, spirituality and depressive symptoms. Method and results: The sample consisted of 147 Oshiwambo-speaking older adults (mean age = 61 years, SD = 6.92 years) with HIV in Namibia. By utilising a hierarchical multivariate regression method, this study found that social support from friends and spirituality showed a significant negative relationship to depressive symptoms. In addition, self-rated health status and alcohol use were significant sociodemographic predicitive factors of depressive symptoms. Conclusion: This study suggests the need to develop interventions and support programmes that incorporate peer support and spiritual practice to promote health and well-being among older persons living with HIV in Namibia.

Kinetics models of transesterification reaction for biodiesel production: A theoretical analysis

The kinetics of the transesterification reaction has been explored theoretically. A general rate equation (GRE) was obtained for kinetics modeling of transesterification at the entire time of reaction based on a three-step mechanism. It has been shown that the GRE model converts to a Second-Order (SO) model at short initial times of reaction and it converts to Pseudo-First-Order (PFO) model at short initial times of reaction and high concentration of alcohol. Also, a modified form of the Second-Order model (MSO) was derived when the reaction is spontaneous (at Delta(r) G << 0 conditions or at short initial times of reaction). The accuracy of theoretical models and our assumptions was evaluated by three sets of experimental data selected at literature. It has been shown that the accuracy of PFO, SO, and MSO models followed the order of MSO > SO > PFO at short initial times while the GRE model is a suitable kinetics model at the entire times of reaction. Also, our research, contrary to what has been reported so far in published papers, shows that pseudo-first-order and second-order models are only accurate for kinetics modeling of the transesterification reaction at short initial times of reaction. The application of headspace gas chromatographic method for the determination of ethyl alcohol in craft beers, wines and soft drinks

The increasing interest of consumers in the still-developing craft beer market and the strict tax-related legal regulations concerning alcoholic beverages require precise methods for quality control. Determination of ethyl alcohol concentration was performed in 167 samples of alcoholic beverages (craft beers, soft drinks, wines, and cider). We applied headspace gas chromatography using a dual column/dual flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID/FID), a technique routinely used in forensic toxicology. The method was linear in range, from 0.01 to 20.0%, with a coefficient of determination of 0.999 (R2). The limit of quantification was 0.01%; the detection limit was 0.003%. Furthermore, very good validation parameters were achieved (precision and accuracy below 5%). The samples were analyzed for compliance with EU standards and recommendations of The Beer Judge Certification Program. Moreover, the content of trace quantities of volatile compounds and fusel alcohols (1-propanol, 2-propanol, acetone, and acetaldehyde) was found in the majority of alcoholic beverages.
