The contributions of everyday and major experiences of racial discrimination to current alcohol use and regular smoking in Black adults: Considering variation by demographic characteristics and family history

Background: Racial discrimination has consistently been linked to elevated alcohol use and smoking in Black adults, but the independent contributions of everyday and major experiences of discrimination have rarely been investigated. The present study aimed to identify variation in magnitude of the links between each type of racial discrimination with current frequency of alcohol use and regular smoking by demographic characteristics and family history of problem drinking/regular smoking in Black adults in the U.S. Methods: Data were drawn from 4462 adults (29.40% Afro Caribbean, 70.60% African American; 63.20% female) in a nationally representative sample of Black Americans. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to predict current frequency of alcohol use and regular smoking using the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) and Major Experiences of Discrimination Scale (MEDS), testing for interactions with demographic characteristics and family history. Results: In the alcohol model, an EDS by education level interaction was observed: OR = 1.04 (CI:1.02-1.07) for < high school; OR = 0.95 (CI:0.92-0.98) for >= high school. MEDS was independently associated with alcohol use (OR = 1.11, CI:1.04-1.18). In the smoking model, EDS was associated with elevated risk (OR = 1.03, CI:1.01-1.04) and a MEDS by age cohort interaction was observed: OR = 1.24 (CL1.11-1.38) for Application In Synthesis of Isoborneol.

BACKGROUND Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) regression was used to analyse a series of different Irish Whiskey samples in order to define their spectral profile and to assess the capability of the NIR method to identify samples based on their origin and storage (e.g. distiller, method of maturation). The ability of NIR spectroscopy to quantify the level of potential chemical adulterants was also investigated. Samples were spiked with 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% v/v of each adulterant (e.g. methanol, ethyl acetate, etc.) prior to NIR analysis. RESULTS The results of this study demonstrated the capability of NIR spectroscopy combined with PLS regression to classify the whiskey samples and to determine the level of adulteration. Moreover, the potential of NIR coupled with chemometric analysis as a rapid, portable, and non-destructive screening tool for quality control, traceability, and food/beverage adulteration for customs and other regulatory agencies, to mitigate beverage fraud was illustrated. CONCLUSION Given the non-specificity of the NIR technique, these positive preliminary results indicated that this method of analysis has the potential to be applied to identify the level of adulteration in distilled spirits. The rapid nature of the technique and lack of consumables or sample preparation required allows for a far more time and cost-effective analysis per sample. (c) 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Different fluorescence emitting copper nanoclusters protected by egg white and double-emission fluorescent probe for fast detection of ethanol

Green emitting copper nanoclusters (G-Cu NCs), yellow emitting Cu NCs (Y-Cu NCs), orange emitting Cu NCs (O-Cu NCs) and red emitting Cu NCs (R-Cu NCs) were prepared using chicken egg white as the stabilizer by changing the reaction conditions. This is a green, facile and cheap method to explore different color emitting CuNCs by the same precursor and stabilizers. The G-Cu NCs were employed for the detection of ethanol due to their aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect. The fluorescence emission of Cu NCs at 526 nm under the excitation of 444 nm can be effectively enhanced in the presence of ethanol due to AIEE effect, thus realizing the quantitative determination of ethanol content in the range 5-60%. In addition, a visual dual-emission fluorescence probe with the combination of G-Cu NCs and silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs/G-Cu NCs) was designed to evaluate ethanol content conveniently and rapidly. Desirable linear relationship is observed between ratio of fluorescence intensity (I-525/I-441) and ethanol content under the excitation of 383 nm. Visible color transformation of this probe is observed in the ethanol content range 2-20%. Moreover, the ethanol sensing platforms were applied to the detection and evaluation of the alcohol content of liquor, and the recoveries in liquor were in the range 99.7% to 113%, broadening the applications of Cu NCs and providing a sensitive detection method for ethanol.

Nanoindentation determination for mechanical properties of submillimeter boron carbide particles simulating fuel debris fragments

It is essential to characterize fuel debris fragments that are to be retrieved from reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power station prior to their large-scale retrieval. Using nanoindentation (NI) test, we have determined the mechanical properties of boron carbide (B4C) particles currently used to simulate hard covalent materials as included in the debris. We also examined the measurable minimum size among the particles sized to three types and found suitable sample preparation methods. While the minimum size was limited to 1000 m among the particles fixed with grease in molding process, it was brought down to 500 m by alternative polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films. Indentation moduli of these successfully measured B4C particles are consistent with a referential value of 431 GPa with a difference of 3.5%. Furthermore, the hardness values of the particles are slightly lower than a referential value of 21.8 GPa within uncertainty of 9%. The particle surfaces were polished enough with only the roughest #240 abrasive papers, and surface flatness was a key issue for the successful indentation but not surface roughness. As a result of the detachment caused during polishing, both 500 m particles and 100 m particles fixed with the grease were insufficiently flattened, and then the indenter was slipped on the inclined surfaces during the NI tests. The values of modulus and hardness are at the minimum for the 100 m particles at decreasing rates of 46% and 42% to the referential values. The thin uniform PVA films reduced the projection amount of the 500 m particles from the surrounding resin and prevented the particle detachment during polishing. Lactobacillus spp. reduces ethanol-induced liver oxidative stress and inflammation in a mouse model of alcoholic steatohepatitis

Alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH) is a complex multifactorial disease that can lead to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis if not treated promptly. Alcohol-induced oxidative stress and inflammation are the main factors that cause steatohepatitis and liver injury; however, probiotic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract have been revealed to regulate immune responses and reduce oxidative stress, suggesting that functional probiotics could help to prevent ASH and liver injury. Despite numerous reports on the interactions between ASH and probiotics, the mechanisms underlying probiotic-mediated liver protection remain unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to screen probiotics with high antioxidant capacity and investigate the ability of different probiotic combinations to reduce alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in a mouse model. It was identified that Lactobacillus plantarum (TSP05), Lactobacillus fermentum (TSF331) and Lactobacillus reuteri (TSR332) neutralized free radicals and displayed high antioxidant activity in vitro. In addition, these three functional probiotic strains protected mice from alcohol-induced liver injury in vivo. Mice treated with the probiotics demonstrated significantly lower alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and triglyceride levels, which were associated with the downregulation of the proinflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha and IL-6. Furthermore, probiotic treatment upregulated glutathione and glutathione peroxidase activity, which are bioindicators of oxidative stress in the liver. Collectively, the present results indicated that Lactobacillus strains TSP05, TSF331 and TSR332 reduced oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, thus preventing ASH development and liver injury.

A new biomimetic set -up to understand the role of the kinematic, mechanical, and surface characteristics of the tongue in food oral tribological studies

A biomimetic tribological set-up was developed to better integrate physiological characteristics in oral friction studies. Polyvinyl alcohol was used to design tongue-mimicking samples (TMSs) with controlled bulk rigidity and surface roughness. The set-up allowed normal stresses and sequences of shearing motion to be applied between a TMS and a rectangular aluminum plate mimicking the hard palate. Cottage cheese with and without suspended microcrystalline cellulose particles of two sizes (small: 15 mu m and large: 250 mu m) was used as the model food in the experiments, making it possible to introduce heterogeneities well above the perception threshold, which often get excluded in conventional tribology studies. The feasibility of the set-up was tested by measuring how friction coefficient values were affected by food properties (viscosity, particle presence), TMS properties (surface roughness, bulk rigidity), and operational parameters (normal stress, shearing velocity). The measurements with the set-up were found to be repeatable, confirming its reliability. Particle presence led to increases in friction coefficient values, while food viscosity showed less of an influence, comparatively. Increases in the surface roughness and bulk rigidity of the TMSs led to a pronounced augmentation of the friction coefficient values. The friction coefficient values showed dependence on normal stress, increase in normal stress led to significant decrease in friction. Moreover, friction notably increased between the lowest and highest shearing velocities. In conclusion, this set-up proved to be efficient and reliable in measuring friction coefficient values and variation, paving the way for a better understanding of oral tribology and its dynamic nature.

Introducing alcohol as a drug in medicine reviews with pharmacists: Findings from a co-design workshop with patients

Introduction Alcohol poses a range of potential problems to people taking medications, but health professionals are usually not comfortable talking about drinking with patients. The Medicines and Alcohol Consultation aims to increase the capacity of pharmacists to conduct person-centred reviews in which alcohol is regarded as another drug to be discussed alongside medications. This paper explores sensitivities in discussing alcohol and views on the legitimacy of the Medicines and Alcohol Consultation intervention concept at a pharmacy-user intervention co-design workshop. Methods A co-design workshop was held with 14 people recruited from UK community pharmacies who regularly drank alcohol and took medications for long-term conditions. This formed one element of a broader, iterative, intervention co-production process. Workshop discussions were audio-recorded and analysed thematically. Results The basic intervention concept resonated well, though not entirely unproblematically. Participants were interested in receiving information on how medications interact with alcohol and how this might affect their own conditions, with which to make their own informed choices. Linking alcohol use to medicines gave legitimacy to pharmacists to raise alcohol in medicines reviews. Sensitivity in talking about alcohol was linked to vulnerability to negative judgement. Discussion and Conclusions Changing the framing of alcohol in medicines reviews, away from being regarded as a ‘lifestyle issue’ to being considered a drug directly linked to medicines use, safety and effectiveness, was welcomed by participants in this study.

An undercover problem in the Muslim community: A qualitative study of imams’ perspectives on substance use

Background: Mainstream Islam prohibits alcohol and other drugs, yet substance use is prevalent in Muslim-American communities. Previous studies have not examined how imams, leaders of mosques, address substance use in their communities. This study aimed to explore imams’ perspectives and approaches toward Muslim Americans with substance use disorders (SUD). Methods: Qualitative study of imams in New York City recruited by convenience sampling. We conducted one-on-one semi-structured interviews to address how imams perceive and address substance use. Using an inductive thematic analysis approach, we created an initial coding scheme which was refined iteratively, identified prominent themes, and created an explanatory model to depict relationships between themes. Results: All imams described substance use within a shared underlying framework of religious prohibition of alcohol and other drugs. Their perceptions of individuals with SUD diverged between a focus on sin, shame, and social disruption vs. a focus on acceptance and forgiveness. Furthermore, imams diverged between conceptualizing their communities as comprising mosque-going individuals without SUD vs. broader communities that include individuals with SUD. While imams acknowledged how some imams’ judgmental language toward SUD may perpetuate stigma, they also identified therapeutic approaches toward SUD: non-judgmental engagement, encouragement of recovery, prayer, and referral to resources. Conclusions: This study is among the first to illustrate the range of perceptions and approaches to substance use among Muslim American imams. These perceptions have potentially divergent impacts-shaming or assisting individuals with SUD. An understanding of these complexities can inform provision of culturally competent care to Muslim-American patients with SUD.

Synergistic interaction between Ru and MgAl-LDH support for efficient hydrogen transfer reduction of carbonyl compounds under visible light

Coordinated Ru species, Ru/LDH, were applied to the reduction of carbonyl compounds via blue light irradiation under mild (45 degrees C, atmospheric argon pressure), ligand-free, and additive-free conditions. LDH can act as an efficient base catalyst to assist in formation of isopropoxide, requiring no additional base, because basic OH groups form an ordered distribution on LDH surface. The coordinated Ru species containing one OH and three oxygen atoms ligands deriving from the OH groups of LDH are a crucial component, for securing the active electron-deficient Ru species that favours formation of Ru-isopropoxide. The photocatalytic activity is related to the adsorption capacity of isopropyl alcohol near the electron-deficient Ru species and the formation of Ru-isopropoxide. The strong-metal-support interactions between Ru and LDH affect the coordination and the electronic surroundings of the Ru centres and have a significant effect on the photocatalytic activity.

Characterization of bio-nanocomposite films based on gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol blend reinforced with bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers for food packaging applications

Bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers (BCNW) were synthesized from Komagataeibacter xylinus (strain K2G30; UMCC 2756) using sulfuric acid hydrolysis and incorporated into a gelatin-polyvinyl alcohol (GL/PVA) blend film matrix. The effect of BCNW content (1-10 wt% of biopolymer) on the microstructural, mechanical, optical, and water barrier properties of bio-nanocomposites was studied. Transmission electron microscopy showed that BCNW had a needle shape morphology with an average length of 600 nm and an average width of 30 nm. The crystallinity index of BCNW was 94.7% using X-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) illustrated good miscibility between GL/PVA blend film matrix and BCNW up to 7.5 wt%. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode showed molecular interactions between functional groups of the GL/PVA blend film matrix and BCNW. The incorporation of BCNW up to 7.5% into the GL/PVA blend reduced the water vapor transmission rate and water vapor permeability by about 22% and 14%, respectively, while tensile strength, elongation at break, and elastic modulus increased by about 21.5%, 41% and 19%, respectively (p < 0.05). Films transparency was not affected by the addition of BCNW (p > 0.05) suggesting that the BCNW were dispersed uniformly at the nanoscale. All films were colorless (Delta E*<2) with low opacity value (<2) comparable to synthetic plastics. Overall, the characterization of functional properties revealed that GL/PVA blend film reinforced with BCNW could be used as an environmentally friendly packaging material to partially replace or reduce the use of current petroleum-based packaging materials.
