Brain-Derived neurotrophic factor Va166Met induces female-specific changes in impulsive behaviour and alcohol self-administration in mice

Substance use disorders are a debilitating neuropsychiatric condition, however it remains unclear why some individuals are at greater risk of substance use disorders than others and what genetic factors determine such individual differences. Impulsivity appears a promising candidate endophenotype to bridge the gap between genetic risk and addiction. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and in particular the BDNFval66Met polymorphism, has been suggested to be involved in both impulsivity and substance use disorders, however results so far have been inconsistent. To investigate the role of BDNF, and more specifically the BDNFval66Met polymorphism, in both impulsivity and operant alcohol self-administration using the same animal model. Separate cohorts of humanized Val66Met transgenic mice were assessed for either trait impulsivity in the 5-choice serial reaction time (5-CSRT) touchscreen task, or propensity towards obtaining ethanol in an operant paradigm. It was found that female hBDNE(val/val) mice exhibited both greater impulsivity compared to hBDNF(Met/Met) mice of the same sex as shown by a higher number of premature responses at one of three increased inter-trial intervals tested in the 5-CSRT task, and a greater propensity toward stable ethanol self-administration relative to male mice of the same genotype in the operant paradigm. By contrast, male mice showed no difference between genotypes in impulsivity or stable ethanol self-administration. The hBDNF(Met/Met) genotype appears to sex-specifically alter aspects of both impulsive behaviour and addiction propensity. These results suggest that impulse behaviour may be a possible predictor of addiction risk.

Enhanced flux and fouling resistance forward osmosis membrane based on a hydrogel/MOF hybrid selective layer

Although forward osmosis (FO) technology has been widely adopted for water treatment, it still faces great challenges, including low permeability and fouling problem. Herein, a novel forward osmosis membrane was developed with a stable, uniform and defect-free polyvinyl alcohol/polydopamine coated zeolitic imidazolate framework (PVA/PDA@ZIF-8) hybrid selective layer to simultaneously enhance its transport property and fouling resistance. The prepared FO membrane exhibits improved water flux without losing the selectivity, since the PDA@ZIF-8 provide additional preferential passageway for water transporting while hinder the diffusion of salt. The optimized membrane shows a higher water flux than pristine PVA membrane (14.2 vs. 8.7 L m(-2) h(-1) in FO mode, 24.3 vs. 14.8 L m(-2) h(-1) in PRO mode) with a reasonable selectivity considering as J(s)/J(w) value (0.44 vs. 0.4 g L-1 in FO mode, 0.38 vs. 0.33 g L-1). Moreover, the dynamic fouling experiments with organic foulants (protein and polysaccharide) indicate that the prepared membrane exhibits strong antifouling property and excellent permeation recovery ability (>95.0%) due to the optimized surface property. This study opens a new avenue for treatment wastewater by developing a forward osmosis membrane based on a hydrogel/MOF hybrid selective layer. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Effects of post-harvest fungal infection of apples on chemical characteristics of cider

The impact of fungal post-harvest infection of apple on the chemical composition of cider was investigated through a comparative analysis of ciders obtained from apples (Gala variety) separately infected by five fungal species (Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea, Diplodia seriata, Monilinia fructigena, and Penicillium expansum) and cider from sound apples. The content of several flavor-active molecules belonging to different chemical groups, such as alcohols, esters, acids, aldehydes, phenols, and lactones, significantly varied among ciders. Particularly, cider from sound apples had a higher concentration of ethyl ester acetate, fatty acid ethyl esters and fatty acids, molecules that contribute to fruity and sweet scent. Principal component analysis well discriminated ciders, evidencing species-specific fungal effect. Differences in precursor availability in juices and biosynthesis pathways in fungi could explain changes in aroma profile of ciders. This study provides information on the potential risk to produce cider from infected apples due to the possible quality depreciation.

Fischer-Tropsch reaction within zeolite crystals for selective formation of gasoline-ranged hydrocarbons

Product selectivity control is attractive in Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis but it is still a challenge, because the F-T products follow the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distribution with maximized gasoline-ranged (C-5-C-11) hydrocarbon selectivity at 45%. Herein, we report a strategy by optimizing the gasoline selectivity to outperform the ASF limitation. The key to this success is fixation of the metal nanoparticles within zeolite crystals (metal@zeolite), where the zeolite micropore adjusts the product selectivity. For example, the Ru@NaY exhibited the gasoline selectivity 64.3% in the F-T reaction, which is significantly higher than the ASF limitation and about 2 times of that (32.8%) over conventionally supported Ru catalyst (Ru/NaY). This investigation might offer an alternative route for the direct transformation of syngas to liquid fuels with controllable selectivities. Enhanced biodiesel production from oleic acid using TiO2-decorated magnetic ZIF-8 nanocomposite catalyst and its utilization for used frying oil conversion to valuable product

In this study, a new recyclable TiO2-decorated magnetic ZIF-8 (Fe3O4@ZIF-8/TiO2) nanocomposite catalyst was first synthesized and its structural and morphological properties were characterized through different techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, TEM, EDX, TPD, and VSM. Then, biodiesel was produced using the Fe3O4@ZIF-8/TiO2 catalyst through the esterification of oleic acid in the presence of ethanol. Response surface methodology (RSM) was also employed to achieve the optimum experimental operating variables affecting the yield of biodiesel production. Significant variables like the amount of catalyst, the molar ratio of alcohol to fatty acid, reaction time, and temperature were optimized through RSM to achieve the highest yield of biodeisel production. The results indicated that the highest biodiesel yield is obtained at the reaction temperature of 50 degrees C, the reaction time of 62.5 min, the alcohol to oleic acid molar ratio 30:1, and 0.2 g (6 %wt) amount of catalyst. In this condition, the highest yield of biodiesel production was found 80% and 93% using ethanol and methanol, respectively; around 40% higher than pristine TiO2 and magnetic ZIF-8. Subsequently, the biodiesel production in optimum conditions was evaluated from frying oil by using the as-prepared catalyst. The result from H-1 NMR and GC-MS analyses confirmed the efficient conversion of frying oil wastes to valuable biofuel product.

Au-Pd nanoparticles immobilized on TiO2 nanosheet as an active and durable catalyst for solvent-free selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol

TiO2 nanocrystals with controlled facets have been extensively investigated due to their excellent photocatalytic performance in sustainable and green energy field. However, the applications in thermal catalysis without applying UV irradiation are comparably less and the identification of their intrinsic roles, especially the different catalytic behaviors of each crystal facet, remains not fully recognized. In this study, bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles supported on anatase TiO2 nanosheets exposing {001} facets or TiO2 nanospindles exposing {101} as a catalyst were prepared by sol-immobilization method and used for solvent-free benzyl alcohol oxidation. The experimental results indicated that the exposed facet of the support has a significant effect on the catalytic performance. AuPd/TiO2-001 catalyst exhibited a higher benzyl alcohol conversion than that of the AuPd/TiO2-101. Meanwhile, all the prepared AuPd/TiO2 catalysts were characterized by XRD, ICP-AES, XPS, BET, TEM, and HRTEM. The results revealed that the higher number of oxygen vacancies in TiO2 -sheets with the exposed {001} facets of higher surface energy could be responsible for the observed enhancement in the catalytic performance of benzyl alcohol oxidation. The present study displays that it is plausible to enhance the catalytic performance for the benzyl alcohol oxidation by tailoring the exposed facet of the TiO2 as a catalyst support. A Facebook intervention to address cigarette smoking and heavy episodic drinking: A pilot randomized controlled trial

Background: Co-occurrence of tobacco use and heavy episodic drinking (HED; 5+ drinks for men and 4+ drinks for women per occasion) is common among young adults; both warrant attention and intervention. In a two-group randomized pilot trial, we investigated whether a Facebook-based smoking cessation intervention addressing both alcohol and tobacco use would increase smoking abstinence and reduce HED compared to a similar intervention addressing only tobacco. Methods: Participants were 179 young adults (age 18-25; 49.7% male; 80.4% non-Hispanic white) recruited from Facebook and Instagram who reported smoking 4+ days/week and past-month HED. The Smoking Tobacco and Drinking (STAND) intervention (N = 84) and the Tobacco Status Project (TSP), a tobacco-only intervention (N = 95), both included daily Facebook posts for 90 days and weekly live counseling sessions in private secret groups. We verified self-reported 7-day smoking abstinence via remote salivary cotinine tests at 3, 6, and 12 months (with retention at 83%, 66%, and 84%, respectively). Participants self-reported alcohol use. Results: At baseline, the participants averaged 10.4 cigarettes per day (SD = 6.9) and 8.9 HED occasions in the past month (SD = 8.1), with 27.4% in a preparation stage of change for quitting smoking cigarettes. Participants reported significant improvements in cigarette smoking and alcohol use outcomes over time, with no significant differences by condition. At 12 months, intent-to-treat smoking abstinence rates were 3.5% in STAND vs. 0% in TSP (biochemically verified) and 29.4% in STAND vs. 25.5% in TSP (self-reported). Compared to TSP, participants rated the STAND intervention more favorably for supporting health and providing useful information. Conclusions: Adding an alcohol treatment component to a tobacco cessation social media intervention was acceptable and engaging but did not result in significant differences by treatment condition in smoking or alcohol use outcomes. Participants in both conditions reported smoking and drinking less over time, suggesting covariation in behavioral changes.

Associations between occupation and heavy alcohol consumption in UK adults aged 40-69 years: a cross-sectional study using the UK Biobank

Background Understanding the relationship between occupation and alcohol use offers opportunities to provide health promotion programmes based on evidence of need. We aimed to determine associations between occupation and heavy alcohol consumption in working individuals aged 40-69 years. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using 100,817 people from the UK Biobank: 17,907 participants categorised as heavy drinkers, defined as > 35 units/week for women and > 50 units/week for men, and 82,910 drinking controls. Prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% CIs were calculated for gender-specific heavy drinking in 353 occupations using Standard Occupational Classification, V.2000. Results Seventy-seven occupations were associated with level of alcohol consumption in drinkers. The largest ratios for heavy drinkers were observed for publicans and managers of licenced premises (PR = 2.81, 95%CI 2.52-3.14); industrial cleaning process occupations (PR = 2.09, 1.33-3.28); and plasterers (PR = 2.07, 1.66-2.59). Clergy (PR = 0.20, 0.13-0.32); physicists, geologists and meteorologists (PR = 0.40, 0.25-0.65); and medical practitioners (PR = 0.40, 0.32-0.50) were least likely to be heavy drinkers. There was evidence of gender-specific outcomes with the proportion of jobs associated with heavy drinking accounted for by skilled trade occupations being 0.44 for males and 0.05 for females, and 0.10 for males and 0.40 for females when considering managers and senior officials. Conclusions In the largest study of its kind, we found evidence for associations between a wider variety of occupations and the risk of heavy alcohol consumption than identified previously, particularly in females, although causality cannot be assumed. These results help determine which jobs and broader employment sectors may benefit most from prevention programmes.

The proportionality constant is the rate constant for the particular unimolecular reaction. the reaction rate is directly proportional to the concentration of the reactant. I hope my blog about 42142-52-9 is helpful to your research. Category: alcohols-buliding-blocks.

Ultrasonic effects on the headspace volatilome and protein isolate microstructure of duck liver, as well as their potential correlation mechanism

In spite of the high added value and tremendous output from duck processing industries, duck liver (DLv) is underutilized and a major factor is related to its prominent off-flavor perception which hampers the consumption and processing attributes. This work was designed to investigate the impact of low-frequency ultrasound (US) pretreatments on the headspace volatilome evolution of DLv and its isolated protein (DLvP) microstructure, aiming at exploring the potential of US technology to inhibit off-flavor perception and possible mechanisms behind. Results suggested that US pretreatment resulted in decreased lipid oxidation and off-flavor perception, simultaneously without significantly causing physicochemical influence including texture, pH and color. US induced obvious tertiary structural changes of DLvP, as revealed by the intrinsic fluorescence and surface hydrophobicity (H0), whereas the SH, S-S, secondary structure and molecular weight of DLvP remained unaffected, suggesting the presence of molten globule state (MG-state) under ultrasonic conditions. Besides, the headspace contents of flavor compounds, mainly aldehydes and alcohols, were significantly decreased whereas acids were increased. Multivariate analysis suggested an obvious US-induced effect on the volatilome evolution of DLv samples. Discriminant analysis recognized the aroma compounds including aldehydes and alkenals as the major contributors leading to the change of olfactory characteristics of DLv after ultrasonic treatment. Correlation analysis demonstrated the positive relationship between the volatile markers variation and the increased H0 values, a characteristic attribute of MG-state protein. The results obtained in this work suggested that US technology matched with suitable parameters could be a very promising approach to modulate the off-flavor perception of liver products by altering DLvP conformation.

Production and characterization of shape memory polymeric nanocomposite materials

Polymers are macromolecular materials that simple molecules (monomers) come together with chemical bonds and form them. The industrial use area of polymers is increasing due to many advantages of them such as mechanical properties, easy formability, lightweight, and low cost. Properties of smart (capable of reacting to an external effect) polymers; because of external effects such as magnetic field, electric field, temperature, and pH, they can change their shape and various mechanical properties. Areas such as aviation, construction, electronics, and medical can be given as examples to the usage areas of such materials. In this study, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymer was used as a matrix in nanocomposite materials. New types of shape memory nanocomposites materials were obtained by using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphene oxide (GO) produced by the Hummers method as fillers. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) devices were used to examine the thermal characterization of materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) method and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) were used for structural characterization analysis. In addition, chemical characterization of the materials was investigated using energy diffusion X-ray analysis (EDX) and surface morphology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The shape memory performances of the produced nanocomposite materials were determined by the shape recycling tests. It is examined the effect of fillers on the shape memory performance, structural and thermal properties of nanocomposite materials. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
