Enzymatic hydrolysis and auto-isomerization during beta-glucosidase treatment improve the aroma of instant white tea infusion

The aroma changes in instant white tea resulting from beta-glucosidase treatment was investigated by quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), odour activity value analysis (OAV), aroma reconstruction and omission tests. The grassy, floral and sweet notes increased significantly (P < 0.05), and the roasted note decreased significantly (P < 0.05) upon beta-glucosidase treatment. Quantitative analysis showed that the concentrations of benzaldehyde, benzeneacetaldehyde, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, linalool, phenylethyl alcohol, cis-linalool oxide, trans-linalool oxide, hexanol, hotrienol and (E)-2-hexen-1-ol increased significantly (P < 0.05) after treatment; however, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol isomerized to (E)-2-hexen-1-ol. OAV analysis, aroma reconstruction and the omission test showed that the grassy, floral and sweet notes increased as the (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, cis/trans-linalool oxide and benzeneacetaldehyde increased, whereas the roasted note declined under the same conditions. The enzymatic hydrolysis of glycosidic precursors and the auto-isomerization of volatile compounds provide new information for understanding how beta-glucosidase treatment improves the aroma of tea products. The interaction of exposure to adverse childhood and combat experiences on the current mental health of new post-9/11 veterans

Military veterans have greater exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) than civilians and many also encounter warfare exposures, which can increase the likelihood of mental health problems. The purpose of this study was to test an interaction between childhood traumas and warfare exposures on the mental health of a sample of nearly 10,000 new post-9/11 veterans. Results revealed that male veterans exposed to one or two ACEs, but no warfare, were more likely to experience anxiety, depression, suicidal thinking, and angry outbursts than the reference group (i.e., no ACEs and no warfare exposure). Female veterans exposed to one or two ACEs, but no warfare, were only more likely to experience suicidal thinking. Male and female veterans exposed to three or more ACEs and no warfare were more likely to experience probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, suicidality, and angry outbursts. Among those veterans who experienced corollaries of combat only (e.g., seeing someone killed or seriously wounded), male, but not female veterans were more likely to have probable PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Veterans exposed to warfare (i.e., combat and the corollaries of combat), irrespective of ACEs exposure, were the most likely to report mental health symptoms. Implications for community-based mental health services are discussed.

Monitoring drug consumption in Innsbruck during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown by wastewater analysis

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has developed into a serious pandemic with millions of cases diagnosed worldwide. To fight COVID-19 pandemic, over 100 countries instituted either a full or partial lockdown, affecting billions of people. In Tyrol, first lockdown measures were taken on 10 March 2020. On 16 March 2020, a curfew went into force which ended on 1 May 2020. On 19 March 2020. Tyrol as a whole was placed in quarantine which ended on 7 April 2020. The governmental actions helped reducing the spread of COVID-19 at the cost of significant effects on social life and behaviour. Accordingly, to provide a comprehensive picture of the population health status not only input from medical and biological sciences is required, but also from other sciences able to provide lifestyle information such as drug use. Herein, wastewater-based epidemiology was used for studying temporal bends of licit and illicit drug consumption during lockdown and quarantine in the area of the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck (174,000 inhabitants). On 35 days between 12 March 2020 and 15 April 2020, loads of 23 markers were monitored in wastewater. Loads determined on 292 days between March 2016 and January 2020 served as reference. During lockdown, changes in the consumption patterns of recreational drugs (i.e. cocaine, amphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, methamphetamine, and alcohol) and pharmaceuticals for short-term application (i.e. acetaminophen. codeine, and trimethoprim) were detected. For illicit drugs and alcohol, it is very likely that observed changes were linked to the shutdown of the hospitality industry and event cancelation which led to a reduced demand of these compounds particularly on weekends. For the pharmaceuticals, further work will be necessary to darify if the observed declines are indicators of improved population health or of some kind of restraining effect that reduced the number of consultations of medical doctors and pharmacies. Facile electrolytic synthesis of Pt and carbon quantum dots coloaded multiwall carbon nanotube as highly efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution and ethanol oxidation

Designing high-performance Pt-based catalysts with low catalysts cost is still a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate a facile electrolysis-solvothermal technique for making Pt and carbon quantum dots coloaded multiwall carbon nanotube (Pt-CQDs/MWCNT) catalyst with the assistant of electric field. Despite of the ultralow Pt amount (0.81 wt%) for the optimized Pt-CQDs/MWCNT catalyst, it exhibits ultrahigh electroactivity and durability toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The mass activities of the catalyst for HER and EOR can be achieved to 4889.7 mA/mg (-40 mV) and 4917 mA mg; 1Pt (forward peak), which are 8.1 times and 5.6 times more active than those of commercial Pt/C respectively. The characterization results reveal that Pt nanpparticles (Pt NPs) with intrinsic structure play the key role in excellent catalytic performance for HER and EOR. CQDs not only support abundant anchoring points for fixation and dispersion of Pt NPs, but also construct 3D conductive network with MWCNT supporter for improving the catalytic performance.

Genetic polymorphisms in pri-let-7a-2 are associated with ischemic stroke risk in a Chinese Han population from Liaoning, China: a case-control study

Ischemic stroke is a complicated disease, and its pathogenesis has been attributed to the occurrence of genetic polymorphisms. Evidence has suggested that the microRNA let-7a is involved in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. Pri-miRNA is the primary transcript, which undergoes several processing steps to generate pre-miRNA and, later, mature miRNAs. In this case-control study, we analyzed the distribution of pri-let-7a-2 variants in patients at a high risk for ischemic stroke and the interactions of pri-let-7a-2 variants and environmental factors. Blood samples and clinical information were collected from 1086 patients with ischemic stroke and 836 healthy controls between December 2013 and December 2015 at the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University. We found that the rs1143770 CC genotype and the C allele were associated with a decreased risk of ischemic stroke, whereas the rs629367 CC genotype was associated with an increased risk for ischemic stroke. Moreover, these two single-nucleotide polymorphisms were in linkage disequilibrium in this study sample. We analyzed gene-environment interactions and found that rs1143770 exerted a combined effect on the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke, together with alcohol use, smoking, and a history of hypertension. Therefore, the detection of pri-let-7a-2 polymorphisms may increase the awareness of ischemic stroke risk. This study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, China (approval No. 2012-38-1) on February 20, 2012, and was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (registration number: ChiCTR-COC-17013559) on December 27, 2017.

Photo image processing analysis of electron beam irradiation on a new liquid scintillator based on alcohol

Liquid scintillator is widely used in various fields. This paper proposes a new base material, a mixture of alcohol and water for liquid scintillator and introduces photo image analysis to investigate electron beam irradiation on the new alcohol-based liquid scintillator. A possibility of using alcohol as a new detection solution in particle detector is briefly described. Alcohol has good solubility for fluor, is biodegradable and has low toxicity. The development of an alcohol-based liquid scintillator was investigated and some physical and optical properties of the alcohol-based liquid scintillator were measured. The energy exchange process that the absorption spectrum overlaps with the emission spectrum was seen in our alcohol-based liquid scintillator. To date, there have been no R&D studies elsewhere for use of alcohol-based liquid scintillator in particle detectors. As an application, we introduce a new measurement technique where range measurements were achieved after irradiating an alcohol-based liquid scintillator with electron beam energies of 6-12 MeV. By analyzing the range images taken by digital camera, or even mobile phone camera, it was possible to find out the fluor component dissolved in the alcohol-based liquid scintillator. This method has sufficient potential as it enables us to estimate wavelengths in the visible region without using an expensive spectrophotometer. These results can be used in medical imaging applications for the treatment of tumors or cancers where irradiation by electron beams takes place. Furthermore, alcohol-based LS could be used in future, next generation particle detectors.

Childhood psychopathology mediates associations between childhood adversities and multiple health risk behaviours in adolescence: analysis using the ALSPAC birth cohort

Background Childhood adversity strongly predicts adolescent multiple health risk behaviours (MRBs) such as alcohol/tobacco use, self-harm and physical inactivity, and both adversities and MRBs are associated with premature mortality and several chronic health conditions that are among the leading causes of death in adults. It is therefore important to understand the relationship between adversities and MRBs and what could mediate any association. The aim of this study was to explore whether childhood psychopathology mediates associations between adversities and MRBs. Methods Participants were young people in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) (N = 5,799). Using structural equation modelling, we explored the associations between adversities before 9 years and MRBs at age 16 years. We also explored potential mediating pathways through dimensional psychopathology measured by the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire subscales at age 12 years. Results There were strong positive associations between adversities and MRBs (beta .25, 95% CI 0.20, 0.31, p < .001) suggesting that each additional adversity is associated with a 0.25 increase in number of MRBs out of 13 total risk behaviours. We found robust evidence of mediating pathways from adversities through conduct problems (beta .05, 95% CI 0.03, 0.06, p < .001), hyperactivity/inattention (beta .02, 95% CI 0.01, 0.03, p < .001) and peer relationship problems (beta -.02, 95% CI -0.03, -0.02, p < .001) to MRBs. Conclusions Increased conduct problems and hyperactivity/inattention appear to partially explain the relationship between adversities and MRBs. Peer relationship problems also appear to reduce the association between adversities and MRBs, and further research is needed to understand how to encourage peer connectivity without increasing risk of MRBs. These results suggest that interventions aimed at reducing MRBs among those exposed to childhood adversities could focus on prevention of behavioural problems. Interested yet? Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies of gasoline oxidative stability – Attempt to devise new gasolines chemical stability index

Fuels stored in storage tanks undergo aging processes. In particular, this applies to fuels containing biocomponents. The ability to quickly assess changes taking place in fuel is more and more critical due to the growing resources of fuels stored for a long time. Moreover, it is essential for maintaining the fuel quality. The purpose of this work was to develop a method enabling determination of the stability of gasolines containing biocomponents and allowing for early warning of quality deterioration. For that, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was tested as it allows for fast, easy, and continuous determination of the gasoline quality. For that, the gasoline electrical parameters were determined by the EIS before and during aging. Then those results were compared with such physico-chemical parameters that change the most quickly during aging. It has been found that selected electrical parameters derived from the impedance spectra, namely, resistance, capacitance, relaxation time, and impedance values at a given frequency decrease with the aging time linearly or exponentially. The changes of those parameters indicate the formation of polar and/or ionic products and decrease of the fuel viscosity, increasing its conductivity. Furthermore, spectral studies of the samples indicate the formation of unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as -OH and C=O group-containing species. These observations are corroborating well with conclusions derived from the EIS studies. Notably, the obtained results indicate the correlation between electrical parameters and critical physicochemical properties of the fuel, thus suggesting possibility of applying the electrical parameters for gasoline quality assessment.

Electrochemical Arylation of Aldehydes, Ketones, and Alcohols: from Cathodic Reduction to Convergent Paired Electrolysis

Arylation of carbonyls, one of the most common approaches toward alcohols, has received tremendous attention, as alcohols are important feedstocks and building blocks in organic synthesis. Despite great progress, there is still a great gap to develop an ideal arylation method featuring mild conditions, good functional group tolerance, and readily available starting materials. We now show that electrochemical arylation can fill the gap. By taking advantage of synthetic electrochemistry, commercially available aldehydes (ketones) and benzylic alcohols can be readily arylated to provide a general and scalable access to structurally diverse alcohols (97 examples, >10 gram-scale). More importantly, convergent paired electrolysis, the ideal but challenging electrochemical technology, was employed to transform low-value alcohols into more useful alcohols. Detailed mechanism study suggests that two plausible pathways are involved in the redox neutral alpha-arylation of benzylic alcohols.

Assimilable nitrogen reduces the higher alcohols content of huangjiu

Yeast assimilable nitrogen (YAN) sources play an important role in the formation of higher alcohols in wine. In this study, the types and amounts of YAN sources and the genes that regulate the synthesis of higher alcohols in a yeast used for huangjiu brewing, Saccharomyces cerevisiae HJ, were assessed for the first time. Quantitative realtime PCR experiments demonstrated that S. cerevisiae HJ genes controlling the production of higher alcohols were expressed at significantly different levels during different growth stages and at different YAN levels, indicating that YAN significantly impacts the total higher alcohols concentration of huangjiu. Ammonium salts especially NH4Cl showed greater effect in reducing the content of higher alcohols than amino acids or urea. After optimization, the addition of NH4Cl (200 mg/L) most effectively reduced the content of higher alcohols at the end of fermentation with little effect on the cell growth rate, final cell density and ethanol concentration. Total higher alcohols decreased by 39%, while the concentrations of isobutanol, isoamylol and 2-phenylethanol decreased by 47%, 28%, and 44%, respectively. The addition of NH4Cl promoted the formation of esters and enriched the amino acids in huangjiu. This study provides a new insight to control the quality of huangjiu, especially the content of higher alcohols based on the strategy of adding NH4Cl.
