Time series Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for characterization of water vapor sorption in hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymeric films

This work investigates the nature of the molecular interactions between water vapor and polymers using time series Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. A detailed analysis of the frequency shifts and relative peak intensities led to the conclusion that polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) sorbed a large quantity of water vapor molecules, resulting in swelling and dissolving of polymer crystallites. Difference spectra were calculated to investigate spectral changes occurring upon sorption by dividing the spectra of polymers during the sorption time series by the spectrum of the dry sample and subsequently subtracting the water vapor spectrum. Based on the absorbance area of the OH stretching vibration region (4000-3000 cm(-1)) in difference spectra, the amount of water sorbed was significantly higher in poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) than in polyethylene (PE) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), increasing with the hydrophilicity of the surface. The OH stretching band of difference spectra shifted from 3499 cm(-1) for PVC, to 3416 cm(-1) for PE and finally to 3387 cm(-1) for PTFE, indicating a more strengthened hydrogen-bonding network in the PTFE matrix upon water vapor sorption. Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene and liquidus tetracycline by anatase/rutile titanium dioxide with heterophase junction derived from materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti): Degradation pathway and mechanism studies

Anatase/rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) with heterophase junction and large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (50.1 m(2) g(1)) is successfully synthesized by calcinating Materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti) (MIL-125(Ti)) with 30% O-2/Ar at the temperature of 600 degrees C (M-O-600). Several techniques are used to examine the physicochemical, photoelectrochemical and optical properties of samples, and their photocatalytic performances are evaluated by photodegradation of gaseous toluene and liquidus tetracycline (TC) under visible light illumination. It is found that the calcination temperature has significant influence on the crystal structure and physicochemical parameters of TiO2. The weight fractions of rutile and anatase TiO2 of M-600 are approximately 0.7 and 0.3, which displays outstanding photocatalytic activity. Through the construction of heterophase junction, M-O-600 has better oxygen adsorption and higher density of localized states, which effectively promotes the generation of superoxide radical (center dot O-2(-)) and hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) species. In-situ infrared spectra indicate that toluene is oxidized to benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzoic acid in turn and then oxidized to formic acid and acetic acid before eventually degraded into H2O and CO2. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is also used to further investigate the degradation pathway of toluene. Degradation pathway and mechanism of TC are studied by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Moreover, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D EEMs) and total organic carbon (TOC) show that TC can be effectively mineralized through a series of reactions by M-O-600 during photocatalysis. Prior drinking motives predict alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 lockdown: A cross-sectional online survey among Belgian college students

The global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the resulting lockdown measures have raised concerns regarding their effect on alcohol consumption. We investigated alcohol use during lockdown in a population of college students, usually characterized by social and heavy drinking. We also tested the predictive role of pre-lockdown drinking motives on alcohol consumption during lockdown. We collected data from 1951 French-speaking Belgian students during the lockdown period (April 1st – May 3rd, 2020) through a crosssectional online survey. Participants self-reported their daily alcohol consumption (1) during a typical week in normal circumstances (i.e., before lockdown), and (2) since lockdown onset. We also assessed drinking motives and severity of alcohol use before lockdown. Our findings showed that 68.2% of the sample reported a lower alcohol consumption during lockdown compared to before lockdown, 17.2% conversely reporting a higher consumption. Enhancement, social and coping motives were all associated with heavy drinking before lockdown. Enhancement and social motives predicted lower alcohol consumption during lockdown among heavy drinkers. Conversely, coping motives, as well as social motives among low drinkers, predicted higher consumption during lockdown. Conformity motives, as well as enhancement motives among low and moderate drinkers, did not predict alcohol consumption before or during lockdown. Overall, several pre-lockdown drinking motives reliably predicted alcohol consumption during lockdown and could thus be used to identify at-risk populations and to tailor intervention programs on alcohol misuse during sanitary crises.

Transcriptional regulation of alcohol induced liver fibrosis in a translational porcine hepatocellular carcinoma model

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 5th most common and 2nd deadliest cancer worldwide. HCC risk factors include alcohol induced liver cirrhosis, which prompts hepatic inflammation, cell necrosis, and fibrosis deposition. As 25% of HCC cases are associated with alcohol induced liver disease, understanding the effects of the cirrhotic liver microenvironment on HCC tumor biology and therapeutic responses are critical. This study utilized the Oncopig Cancer Model-a transgenic pig model that recapitulates human HCC through induced expression of KRAS(G12D) and TP53(R167H )driver mutations-to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying alcohol induced liver disease. Oncopigs (n = 5) underwent fibrosis induction via infusion of ethanol and ethiodized oil (1:3 v/v dosed at 0.75 mL/kg) into the hepatic arterial circulation. Eight-weeks post induction, liver tissue samples from fibrotic and age-matched control (n = 5) Oncopigs were collected for histological evaluation and transcriptional profiling. Increased hepatic inflammation and fibrosis was observed in fibrotic Oncopigs via pathological assessment. Transcriptional profiling (RNA-seq) resulted in the identification of 4387 differentially expressed genes between Oncopig fibrotic and control livers. GO term enrichment analysis identified pathway alterations associated with cirrhosis progression in humans, including cell proliferation, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix deposition, and oxidation-reduction. Key alterations include activation of hepatic stellate cells, increased matrix metalloproteinase production, and altered expression of ABC and SLC transporter genes involved in transport of anticancer drugs. These results demonstrate Oncopig liver fibrosis recapitulates transcriptional hallmarks of human cirrhosis, making the Oncopig an ideal model for studying the effects of the cirrhotic liver microenvironment on HCC tumor biology and therapeutic response. The association between reinforcement sensitivity and substance use is mediated by individual differences in dispositional affectivity in adolescents

Background: Adolescence marks the onset of substance use experimentation and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to certain negative effects of substances. Some evidence indicates reinforcement sensitivity is associated with substance use, though little is known about mechanisms underlying such association. Aims: in the current study were to examine, (1) associations between behavioral activation (BAS) and behavioral inhibition (BIS) system sensitivity, positive (PA) and negative affectivity (NA), and alcohol use and alcohol problems as well as tobacco, and marijuana use, and whether (2) associations are mediated by PA or NA. Methods: Participants were a community sample of N = 125 adolescents (M-age = 15.67 years; SD = 0.93; 52% boys) who completed self-report measures. Results: evinced associations, generally as expected, across variables (all ps < 0.05). In mediation analyses, an association emerged between BIS sensitivity and alcohol use, mediated by NA (95%CIs [0.034; 0.390]); greater BIS sensitivity was associated with greater NA and greater NA was associated with greater alcohol use. These findings were replicated with alcohol problems. An association also emerged between BAS sensitivity and marijuana use, mediated by PA (95%CIs [-0.296; -0.027]); greater BAS sensitivity was associated with greater PA and greater PA was associated with lower marijuana use. Finally, BIS sensitivity was associated with tobacco use through NA (95%CIs [0.023; 0.325]) and PA (95%CIs [0.004; 0.116]), with NA linked to greater, but PA linked to lower tobacco use. BAS sensitivity was also associated with tobacco use through PA (95%CIs [-0.395; -0.049]), with PA linked again to lower tobacco use. Conclusions: There are unique and shared effects of domains of reinforcement sensitivity on adolescent substance use and these vary with index of dispositional affectivity and type of substance considered. Balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. A novel poly (vinyl alcohol)-aided ZnO/Fe2O3 nanocomposite as an ascorbic acid sensor

The application of zinc oxide-based nanocomposite is one of the novel approaches utilized for the development of electronic devices. The sol-gel and auto combustion procedures were employed to synthesize porous PVA aided ZnO/Fe2O3 nanocomposite (PBNC). The n-type iron (III) oxide was successfully coupled with n-type ZnO. The characterizations conducted to explore the significant changes in the physical properties of as-synthesized materials revealed that the surface area, porosity, and charge transfer capability improvement on the PBNC, compared to ZnO. Using the DTG analysis, 500 degrees C was confirmed to be the optimal calcination temperature to degrade the PVA polymer after acting as a capping agent and impurities that have a boiling point of less than 500 degrees C. The XRD pattern and TEM image analysis validated the nanometer range size of the materials (10-70 nm). The SEM image and BET spectral analyses confirmed the porous nature of the PBNC, supporting results obtained from the HRTEM (IFFT) and SAED pattern analysis. The EDXS, XPS, and HRTEM analyses were appliedapplied for Zn, Fe, and O elemental composition and certainty of ZnO. The presence of improved charge transfer property for PBNC, compared to ZnO, has been evidenced by CV and EIS studies. The PBNC also showed enhanced ascorbic acid detection capability compared to ZnO.

Functional applications and luminescence properties of emission tunable phosphors CaMoO4@SiO2:Ln(3+) (Ln=Eu, Tb, Dy)

In this present work, a room temperature coprecipitation method for the synthesis of CaMoO4@SiO2:Ln (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+) phosphors was reported. These particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier Transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-visible spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL) respectively. The results indicated that emission intensity of SiO2 modified samples increased by about 2 times, compared with no-silica modified samples. Multicolor phosphors were also designed by changing the lattice activators (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+). To further explore its applications, the transparent photoluminescent film was developed through the incorporation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and selective and sensitive detection performance on dichromate was demonstrated in detail. In addition, red emission LED devices was assembled with as-prepared phosphors. The present results provide not only the high-performance phosphors modified by silica, but also a deep explanation of the structure-property relationship of the as-prepared sample. Based on these findings, it can be foreseen that these microparticles will be applied in versatile filed. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Drug release from hydroxypropylcellulose gels cannot be statistically predicted from their viscometric and initial viscoelastic properties

This study questioned whether rheological properties can predict drug (metronidazole) release from Hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) platforms. Viscometric and viscoelastic properties of aqueous, alcohols/diols and mixed solvent HPC solutions and gels were determined using viscometry and oscillatory analysis. Drug release was conducted at pH 7.4 under sink conditions. Relationships between rheological parameters and drug release were modelled using multiple linear stepwise regression. Viscometry identified ethanol and water as good solvents for HPC. Diol solvents were predicted to exhibit greater interactions with HPC (COSMO modelling) but possessed lowest intrinsic viscosities. Pentanediol or ethylene glycol prepared gels exhibited greatest elasticity. No relationships were observed between dilute solution properties and initial gel viscoelasticity. Drug release from HPC gels occurred via gel erosion and diffusion. No relationships were observed between initial gel viscoelasticity and drug release and thus, for gel platforms that undergo erosion in aqueous media, drug release cannot be predicted from initial gel viscoelasticity.
