The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has developed into a serious pandemic with millions of cases diagnosed worldwide. To fight COVID-19 pandemic, over 100 countries instituted either a full or partial lockdown, affecting billions of people. In Tyrol, first lockdown measures were taken on 10 March 2020. On 16 March 2020, a curfew went into force which ended on 1 May 2020. On 19 March 2020. Tyrol as a whole was placed in quarantine which ended on 7 April 2020. The governmental actions helped reducing the spread of COVID-19 at the cost of significant effects on social life and behaviour. Accordingly, to provide a comprehensive picture of the population health status not only input from medical and biological sciences is required, but also from other sciences able to provide lifestyle information such as drug use. Herein, wastewater-based epidemiology was used for studying temporal bends of licit and illicit drug consumption during lockdown and quarantine in the area of the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck (174,000 inhabitants). On 35 days between 12 March 2020 and 15 April 2020, loads of 23 markers were monitored in wastewater. Loads determined on 292 days between March 2016 and January 2020 served as reference. During lockdown, changes in the consumption patterns of recreational drugs (i.e. cocaine, amphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, methamphetamine, and alcohol) and pharmaceuticals for short-term application (i.e. acetaminophen. codeine, and trimethoprim) were detected. For illicit drugs and alcohol, it is very likely that observed changes were linked to the shutdown of the hospitality industry and event cancelation which led to a reduced demand of these compounds particularly on weekends. For the pharmaceuticals, further work will be necessary to darify if the observed declines are indicators of improved population health or of some kind of restraining effect that reduced the number of consultations of medical doctors and pharmacies. Microbial infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have become a public health threat and cause substantial morbidity and mortality in hospitals as well as in the community and livestock. Pseudomonas aeruginosa YUSA1 isolated from freshwater was found to contain an antagonistic compound against MRSA and other MDR S. aureus strains. The crude ethyl acetate extract (CEE) of cell-free supernatant exhibited in vitro antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against MRSA. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of CEE (as determined by broth-dilution) against MRSA were 25 and 50 mu g/ml, respectively. The effect of CEE on MRSA biofilm formation was assessed by crystal violet staining and an MTT viability assay. Pretreatment of human skin fibroblasts (HSFs) with CEE dose-dependently inhibited MRSA adhesion and invasion, and in vitro cytotoxicity analysis showed CEE was compatible with HSFs at its MIC and MBC. In addition, an CEE containing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA/CEE) hydrogel fabricated by freeze-drying method exhibited significant anti-MRSA activity at concentrations >= 200 mu g/ml. Our results indicate CEE-incorporated PVA polymeric hydrogels have potential use as a food packaging material with antibacterial and antifouling effects on MRSA and other MDR S. aureus strains.

Daylight-activated fumigant detoxifying nanofibrous membrane based on thiol-ene click chemistry

Daylight-activated detoxifying nanofibrous membranes (LDNMs) are fabricated by grafting benzophenone-3,3′,4,4′-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BD) and biological thiols successively on poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) nanofibrous membrane. Taking the merits of photoactivity of BD, high-reactivity of biological thiols, and high specific surface area and porosity of the nanofibrous membrane, 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) can be efficiently detoxified on the LDNMs under daylight irradiation via a thiol-ene click reaction. The detoxification function of the LDNMs is switched on by light irradiation and continues by following a cascade of chemical attacks of thiyl radicals formed during the photoexcitation process. The resultant LDNMs present rapid detoxification rate (i.e., t(1/2) = similar to 30 min) and massive detoxification amount (i.e., similar to 12 mg/g) against 1,3-D vapor under ambient conditions. More importantly, the LDNMs perform a detoxification tailing effect after moving the light-irradiated membrane to a dark environment, thus ensuring the protective function in the absence of sufficient light sources. The detoxification property of the LDNMs in an outdoor environment with sunlight irradiation shows comparable results to the lab-scale outcomes, enabling them to serve as innovative materials for personal protective equipment in practical applications. The successful fabrication of LDNMs may inspire new insights into the design of protective materials providing aggressive protection.

Selective electrooxidation of 2-propanol on Pt nanoparticles supported on Co3O4: an in-situ study on atomically defined model systems

2-Propanol and its dehydrogenated counterpart acetone can be used as a rechargeable electrofuel. The concept involves selective oxidation of 2-propanol to acetone in a fuel cell coupled with reverse catalytic hydrogenation of acetone to 2-propanol in a closed cycle. We studied electrocatalytic oxidation of 2-propanol on complex model Pt/Co3O4(111) electrocatalysts prepared in ultra-high vacuum and characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. The electrocatalytic behavior of the model electrocatalysts has been investigated in alkaline media (pH 10, phosphate buffer) by means of electrochemical infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy and ex-situ emersion synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy as a function of Pt particle size and compared with the electrocatalytic behavior of Pt(111) and pristine Co3O4(111) electrodes under similar conditions. We found that the Co3O4(111) film is inactive towards electrochemical oxidation of 2-propanol under the electrochemical conditions (0.3-1.1 V-RHE). The electrochemical oxidation of 2-propanol readily occurs on Pt(111) yielding acetone at an onset potential of 0.4 V-RHE. The reaction pathway does not involve CO but yields strongly adsorbed acetone species leading to a partial poisoning of the surface sites. On model Pt/Co3O4(111) electrocatalysts, we observed distinct metal support interactions and particle size effects associated with the charge transfer at the metal/oxide interface. We found that ultra-small Pt particles (around 1 nm and below) consist of partially oxidized Pt-delta(+) species which show minor activity towards 2-propanol oxidation. In contrast, conventional Pt particles (particle size of a few nm) are mainly metallic and show high activity toward 2-propanol oxidation.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene and liquidus tetracycline by anatase/rutile titanium dioxide with heterophase junction derived from materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti): Degradation pathway and mechanism studies

Anatase/rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) with heterophase junction and large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (50.1 m(2) g(1)) is successfully synthesized by calcinating Materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti) (MIL-125(Ti)) with 30% O-2/Ar at the temperature of 600 degrees C (M-O-600). Several techniques are used to examine the physicochemical, photoelectrochemical and optical properties of samples, and their photocatalytic performances are evaluated by photodegradation of gaseous toluene and liquidus tetracycline (TC) under visible light illumination. It is found that the calcination temperature has significant influence on the crystal structure and physicochemical parameters of TiO2. The weight fractions of rutile and anatase TiO2 of M-600 are approximately 0.7 and 0.3, which displays outstanding photocatalytic activity. Through the construction of heterophase junction, M-O-600 has better oxygen adsorption and higher density of localized states, which effectively promotes the generation of superoxide radical (center dot O-2(-)) and hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) species. In-situ infrared spectra indicate that toluene is oxidized to benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzoic acid in turn and then oxidized to formic acid and acetic acid before eventually degraded into H2O and CO2. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is also used to further investigate the degradation pathway of toluene. Degradation pathway and mechanism of TC are studied by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Moreover, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D EEMs) and total organic carbon (TOC) show that TC can be effectively mineralized through a series of reactions by M-O-600 during photocatalysis. Effect of warm-air stream for solvent evaporation on bond strength of adhesive systems: A systematic review and meta-analysis of in vitro studies

Purpose: To determine whether warm-air stream for solvent evaporation improves immediate and long-term bond strength of adhesive systems through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Materials and methods: PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SciELO, Scopus, and BVS, as well as Open Grey, were searched for relevant studies. Only in vitro studies reporting the effect of the use of warm-air stream to evaporate solvents of adhesive systems on the bond strength to enamel or dentin, were included. A global analysis compared the standardized mean difference between bond strength values using warm-air stream against a control group in which room-temperature air-stream was used. Bond strength from etch-and-rinse and self-etch adhesives was analyzed separately using the random-effects model at a significance level of alpha = 0.05. For each adhesive type, subgroup analyses were performed considering the type of solvent with which the adhesives were formulated. Results: A total of 10 in vitro studies were included in the meta-analysis. For etch-and-rinse or self-etch adhesives, the use of warm-air stream for adhesive solvent evaporation improved the bond strength to dentin of wateror alcohol-based adhesive systems (p <= 0.03). On the contrary, this effect could not be observed for acetone-based adhesive systems (p >= 0.13). The overall effect demonstrated bond strength was enhanced with the use of warm-air stream (p <= 0.03). Conclusion: The in vitro evidence suggests that bond strength of self-etch or etch-and-rinse adhesives could be improved by using warm-air stream for solvent evaporation. Changes in Plant-Based Diet Indices and Subsequent Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Women and Men: Three US Prospective Cohorts

OBJECTIVE We evaluated the associations between changes in plant-based diets and subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We prospectively followed 76,530 women in the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) (1986-2012), 81,569 women in NHS II (1991-2017), and 34,468 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2016). Adherence to plant-based diets was assessed every 4 years with the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthful PDI (hPDI), and unhealthful PDI (uPDI). We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs). We pooled results of the three cohorts using meta-analysis. RESULTS We documented 12,627 cases of type 2 diabetes during 2,955,350 person-years of follow-up. After adjustment for initial BMI and initial and 4-year changes in alcohol intake, smoking, physical activity, and other factors, compared with participants whose indices remained relatively stable (+/- 3%), participants with the largest decrease (>10%) in PDI and hPDI over 4 years had a 12-23% higher diabetes risk in the subsequent 4 years (pooled HR, PDI 1.12 [95% CI 1.05, 1.20], hPDI 1.23 [1.16, 1.31]). Each 10% increment in PDI and hPDI over 4 years was associated with a 7-9% lower risk (PDI 0.93 [0.91, 0.95], hPDI 0.91 [0.87, 0.95]). Changes in uPDI were not associated with diabetes risk. Weight changes accounted for 6.0-35.6% of the associations between changes in PDI and hPDI and diabetes risk. CONCLUSIONS Improving adherence to overall and healthful plant-based diets was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas decreased adherence to such diets was associated with a higher risk.

There is a growing amount of evidence showing a reciprocal relation between the gut microbiota and the brain. Substance use disorders (SUD), which are a major cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide, have an influence on the gut microbiota and on the gut-brain axis. Distinct Whole-Body Movements in Response to Alcohol and Sexual Content in Alcohol Use Disorder

Background Spontaneous motor responses of approach and avoidance toward stimuli are important in characterizing psychopathological conditions, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, divergent results have been reported, possibly due to confounded parameters (e.g., using a symbolic vs. a sensorimotor task, implementation of approach-avoidance as a measure vs. a manipulation). Methods We studied whole-body/posturometric changes by using a sensorimotor measure relying on embodied cognition principles to assess forward (approach) and backward (avoidance) spontaneous leaning movements. Over a 12-second period, 51 male patients with AUD and 29 male control participants were instructed to stand still in response to both alcohol and sexual visual content. Patients with AUD were then divided into abstainers and relapsers, depending on their continuous abstinence at 2 weeks postdischarge (obtained via a telephone follow-up interview). The effects of the group, the stimulus type, the experimental period, and their interactions on the posturometric changes were tested using mixed Analyses of variance (ANOVAs), with a significance threshold set at 0.05. Results Contrary to our expectations, patients and controls did not show significant difference in their forward/backward micromovements while passively viewing alcohol or sexual content (p > 0.1). However, in line with our hypothesis, patients who relapsed several weeks following discharge from the rehabilitation program were significantly more reactive and more likely to lean back during the first seconds of viewing alcohol cues (p = 0.002). Further, relapsers were more likely to lean forward during exposure to sexual content than participants who remained abstinent (p < 0.001). Conclusions Among individuals with AUD, there are distinct pattern of spontaneous movements that differentiate abstainers and relapsers, findings that can be understood in light of existing data and theories on action tendencies.
