The impact of emotional face stimuli on working memory performance among men and women with alcohol use disorder

Background: Individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) often display compromise in emotional processing and non-affective neurocognitive functions. However, relatively little empirical work explores their intersection. In this study, we examined working memory performance when attending to and ignoring facial stimuli among adults with and without AUD. We anticipated poorer performance in the AUD group, particularly when task demands involved ignoring facial stimuli. Whether this relationship was moderated by facial emotion or participant sex were explored as empirical questions. Methods: Fifty-six controls (30 women) and 56 treatment-seekers with AUD (14 women) completed task conditions in which performance was advantaged by either attending to or ignoring facial stimuli, including happy, neutral, or fearful faces. Group, sex, and their interaction were independent factors in all models. Efficiency (accuracy/response time) was the primary outcome of interest. Results: An interaction between group and condition (F-1,F-107 = 6.03, p < .02) was detected. Individual comparisons suggested this interaction was driven by AUD-associated performance deficits when ignoring faces, whereas performance was equivalent between groups when faces were attended. Secondary analyses suggested little influence of specific facial emotions on these effects. Conclusions: These data provide partial support for initial hypotheses, with the AUD group demonstrating poorer working memory performance conditioned on the inability to ignore irrelevant emotional face stimuli. The absence of group differences when scenes were to be ignored (faces remembered) suggests the AUD-associated inability to ignore irrelevance is influenced by specific stimulus qualities. Influences of PVA modification on performance of microencapsulated reversible thermochromic phase change materials for energy storage application

The aim of the paper was to enhance the mechanical properties and anti-permeability performance of microcapsules through shell modification to keep complete and stable structure during the manufacturing process. The effect of PVA adding dosage, modified methods and types of PVA on the performance of microcapsules was discussed in detail. When the PVA/MF ratio (0.04-0.25) was appropriate, the supercooling degree of microcapsules was reduced and thermal stability was improved to some extent. Furthermore, the modified method of adding PVA-1788 into microcapsules after curing probably formed the second protective encapsulation for RTPCMs, which contributed to obtaining MicroRTPCMs-2 with excellent mechanical properties and anti-permeability performance. Compared among the effects of various types of PVA modification on the performance of MicroRTPCMs, PVA with larger polymerization degree and higher alcoholysis degree can form modified resin with larger crosslinking degree, which was beneficial to generating more stable composite shell structure. Therefore, MicroRTPCMs1-2699 presented more outstanding mechanical properties and anti-permeability performance, satisfactory cycle stability and long-term reliability, as well as reversible thermochromic coloration and leakage-prevention performance. Liquefaction of biomass by plasma electrolysis in alkaline condition

We investigated the discharge characteristics, parameters, water content, and mechanism of liquefying biomass by plasma electrolysis under alkaline conditions. Compared with the liquefaction of sawdust under acidic conditions, the discharge changed from corona to spark discharge, the liquefaction time was a little longer (8 min), and the pondus Hydrogenii (pH) of the bio-oil was 7.54 under sodium hydroxide catalyst. We identified the optimal parameters for sawdust liquefaction by sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and sodium bicarbonate using a single factor method and found that the optimal parameters for sodium hydroxide and carbonate were quite different, apparently because they have different liquefaction mechanisms. When the water content increased, the liquefaction rate remained constant, so the water content prolonged the treatment time but did not affect the liquefaction rate or product quality. To analyze the universality of liquefied cellulose biomass under alkaline conditions, corn cob, rice straw, and cotton were liquefied separately. We found that the liquefaction time increased significantly with an increase in cellulose content. Notably, plasma electrolytic liquefaction efficiently heated the solution and effectively catalyzed the liquefaction of biomass with high energy efficiency, making this a promising biomass conversion technology. Preparation and characterization of gellan gum-chitosan polyelectrolyte complex films with the incorporation of thyme essential oil nanoemulsion

Antimicrobial food packaging with a sustained release of antimicrobial agents plays a key role in maintaining food quality and food safety. In this study, polyelectrolyte gellan gum (GG)-chitosan (CS) multilayer film was fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly technology with the incorporation of thyme essential oil (TEO) coarse emulsion (TEOC) or nanoemulsion (TEON). The microstructure of GG-CS three-layered film was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The red fluorescent signals in confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images indicated smaller droplets and more uniform distribution of TEON prepared by ultrasonic treatments, which was consistent with the particle size results and porous structure in SEM images. The film incorporated with 6% TEON exhibited higher antimicrobial activity than that with 6% TEOC, and it significantly reduced E. coli populations in liquid model system. Moreover, films incorporated with TEON showed improved mechanical flexibility (elongation at break) and UV blocking property in comparison to TEOC. This developed GGCS three-layered film loading with TEON was expected to be a potential antimicrobial material with sustained release property for food packaging applications.

Stay-at-Home Orders During the COVID-19 Pandemic, an Opportunity to Improve Glucose Control Through Behavioral Changes in Type 1 Diabetes

OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown on glycemic control and associated factors in people living with type 1 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS An observational evaluation from a self-reported questionnaire on behavioral changes and glycemic information from flash glucose monitoring (FGM) during the lockdown in 1,378 individuals living with type 1 diabetes who used a French dedicated nationwide web application (CoviDIAB). RESULTS The main outcome was the change of the mean glucose level 2 months before and 1 month after the lockdown. We found that mean glucose improved from 9.1 +/- 1.7 mmol/L to 8.7 +/- 1.7 mmol/L (P < 0.001). Factors associated with better glycemic control were a decrease of alcohol consumption (odds ratio [OR] 1.75 [95% CI 1.04-2.94]), an increase in the frequency of FGM scans (OR 1.48 [1.04-2.10]) and in the number of hypoglycemia events (OR 1.67 [1.13-2.46]), and an easier diabetes control perception (OR 1.71 [1.18-2.49]). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that lockdown has a positive impact on glycemic control in people with type 1 diabetes. In this study, the effect of alpha-AN concentration on the higher alcohol productivity of yeast was explored, and the mechanism of this effect was investigated through metabolite and transcription sequence analyses. We screened 12 most likely genes and constructed the recombinant strain to evaluate the effect of each gene on high alcohol formation. Results showed that the AGP1, GDH1, and THR6 genes were important regulators of higher alcohol metabolism in S. cerevisiae. This study provided knowledge about the metabolic pathways of higher alcohols and gave an important reference for the breeding of S. cerevisiae with low-yield higher alcohols to deal with the fermentation system with different alpha-AN concentrations in the brewing industry.
