Synthesis of water-soluble fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) from nanosecond pulsed laser ablation in ethanol

Traditionally, CNPs directly obtained from nanosecond pulsed laser ablation (ns-PLA) in an organic solvent like ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and acetone, possess toxic characteristics with excellent fluorescent properties. However, water-soluble CNPs are found to be non-toxic with weak fluorescent properties. In this study, a post ablation method was utilized to achieve water-soluble fluorescent CNPs. Initially, the colloidal Eth-CNPs solution was obtained from ns-PLA of charcoal powder in the ethanol, which was subsequently dried at room temperature and then dispersed in water to achieve the final water-soluble CNPs (W-CNPs). The High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) image analysis of W-CNPs shows quasi-spherical size particle distribution with an average particle size found to be around 21 nm. XPS studies of charcoal powder and W-CNPs confirm the creation of fluorescent emissive defects state on the surface of W-CNPs under laser ablation in ethanol. Photoluminescence studies of W-CNPs demonstrated the wavelength-dependent PL emission, with peak PL emission in the blue region of the visible spectrum. In vitro studies indicated the non-toxic nature of the W-CNPs at low and high concentration (1, 5 and 10% v/v) in human cardiomyocytes. Herein, the W-CNPs obtained from post-ns-PLA was found to exhibit both blue and green fluorescence in the cardiomyocytes and hence, it can be exploited as a fluoro probe in bioimaging applications.

trans-Cinnamaldehyde-doped quadripartite biopolymeric films: Rheological behavior of film-forming solutions and biofunctional performance of films

Biofunctional quadripartite films were developed by adding trans-Cinnamaldehyde (CIN) (0.4, 0.8, and 1.6% w/v) into chitosan (CH)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/fish gelatin (FG) matrices. Rheological data revealed that all solutions exhibited shear-thinning and typical entangle polymers solutions behavior. Mechanical results showed that the incorporation of CIN caused a significant increase (p < 0.05) in tensile strength, while a significant decrease was observed in elongation-at-break. With increasing CIN content, the WVP of the films, which were in the range of 0.785-0.995 g mm/kPa h m(2), increased to some extent, whereas the water solubility and water absorption were reduced up to 47 and 87%, respectively. Moreover, water contact angle analysis showed that the inclusion of CIN made the quadripartite film more hydrophobic, in which the highest value achieved was 86.6 +/- 0.75 degrees at theta(t=10). ATR/FT-IR spectroscopy demonstrated the formation of Schiff-base and intermolecular hydrogen bonds between components' functional groups, which enhanced the quadripartite films' thermal stability and mechanical properties. X-ray diffraction analysis suggested compatibility among the components, and changes of the surface of the films were confirmed by SEM and AFM analyses. Likewise, the antimicrobial activity of the CIN-loaded films were proved against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, and Escherichia coli. The quadripartite films exhibited in vitro DPPH radical scavenging activity (similar to 35.8%) and ferric reducing power at the maximum CIN testing concentration. The findings of this study proved that CIN-doped films could be used as promising inner functional packaging for food products. Social interaction anxiety and perceived coping efficacy: Mechanisms of the association between minority stress and drinking consequences among sexual minority women

Sexual minority women (SMW; individuals who identify as women and as lesbian, bisexual, or with another sexual minority identity) are at increased risk for problematic alcohol use compared to their heterosexual counterparts. This increased risk has been attributed to minority stress. However, longitudinal research examining associations between minority stress and alcohol use outcomes is extremely limited and examinations of these associations at the daily level are nearly non-existent. Further, few longitudinal studies have examined mechanisms through which minority stress may impact alcohol use. We utilized data from a 14-day daily diary study of 98 SMW to examine daily-level associations between experiences of minority stress, alcohol consumption and consequences, and two proposed mediators of these associations (perceived coping efficacy, social interaction anxiety). Results indicated that on days when participants experienced minority stress events, they experienced lower coping efficacy, higher social interaction anxiety, and more drinking consequences than usual. Minority stress was not associated with same-day alcohol consumption. Perceived coping efficacy and social interaction anxiety mediated the same-day association between minority stress and drinking consequences. No prospective associations were significant, suggesting that studies with multiple assessments per day may be necessary to detect immediate effects of minority stress. Findings highlight the potential impact of daily experiences of minority stress on alcohol consequences and provide evidence that two general psychological processes may be mechanisms through which minority stress impacts alcohol consequences. These results provide evidence of a need for interventions that teach SMW skills for coping with minority stress and its psychological consequences.

Calcium-induced-gel properties for low methoxyl pectin in the presence of different sugar alcohols

The gel behavior of low methoxyl pectin (LMP), de-esterified by high hydrostatic pressure (HHP)-assisted enzymatic method, was comparatively investigated in the presence of different sugar alcohols (erythritol, xylitol and sorbitol). Results showed that both sugar alcohol type and concentration had significant effects on LMP gelation. Gel strength, elasticity, and storage modulus G’ decreased with increasing sugar alcohol concentration, but erythritol-gels always showed the highest value, and sorbitol-gels the lowest at the same sugar alcohol concentration. All LMP gels had good water holding capacity (>97%) when the sugar alcohols concentration was less than 20% (w/v). Moreover, micro-rheology properties revealed that erythritol-gels with better elasticity also formed faster, showing higher gel point. These differences might be mainly due to the combination of sugar alcohols with calcium and pectin inhibiting the interaction between pectin and calcium. In addition, the competition for water between pectin and sugar alcohol also played a certain role. All these results indicated that erythritol-gels had more potential application in low-calorie foods due to its superior gel properties and lower calories.

Effect of ionizing radiation on the colorimetric properties of PVA-GTA Xylenol Orange Fricke gel dosimeters

Fricke gel dosimeters were prepared using a matrix based on poly(vinyl-alcohol) chemical cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and loaded with Xylenol Orange. The samples were irradiated with gamma rays to doses in the range of 5-30 Gy and the consequent color changes were investigated by using spectrophotometric and colorimetric techniques. Starting from the measurement of the transmittance spectra, an analysis of the color of the dosimeters was carried out considering the CIELAB color space. It allowed to highlight correlations between the color coordinates and the dose. Furthermore, the auto-oxidation processes occurring in the samples were studied by colorimetric measurements on both un-irradiated and irradiated samples at different times, up to two-week post-irradiation. The results showed no significant differences in the oxidation effect on the dosimeters, at least in the investigated dose interval. The study suggested that colorimetric analysis, combined with the spectrophotometric one, can be a useful tool for characterizing the samples in view of a standardization of Fricke gel dosimetry.

Ion transfer channel network formed by flower and rod shape crystals of hair hydrolysate in poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix and its application as anion exchange membrane in fuel cells

Ion transfer phenomena occurring in nature are known to be most efficient. Many efforts have been made to mimic such phenomena, especially in the area of energy transfer. Proteins consisting of various amino acids are known to be the fundamental materials behind these phenomena. In the current study, an effort was made to extract proteinaceous material from human hair bio-waste by a green chemical-free thermal hydrolysis process. A simple heat treatment of the human hairs in presence of water led to the formation of a water soluble material, which was called hair hydrolysate (HH), contains 70 wt% proteinaceous material. It was utilized for the fabrication of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix-based anion exchange membrane (AEM). Presence of 27 wt% charged amino acids and 19 wt% polarizable amino acids in the HH provided effective charge transfer sites. 7 wt% arginine present in the HH, having continuous delocalized net positive charge helped the membrane to be stable in highly alkaline conditions, which was confirmed by an indirect analysis of alkaline stability. Formation of rod and flower shaped crystal morphology by the HH in glutaraldehyde crosslinked PVA matrix, created a continuous channel network at higher loadings, which provided a simple path for ion transfer, achieving OHconductivity of 7.46 mS/cm at 70 degrees C. Swelling of the PVA matrix was minimized by annealing of the HH loaded sample, which resulted in reduction of ionic conductivity to 6.16 mS/cm (at 70 degrees C). At the same time, improvement in the properties like increase in thermal, mechanical and thermo-mechanical stability, reduction in water uptake, %swelling and methanol permeability was observed. The selectivity of the membrane was increased to almost a decimal place. Thus, the HH obtained from simple green thermal hydrolysis of human hair bio-waste is a cheap material, which is found to be suitable as ion conductive material for alkaline fuel cells. Fatty Acids and Flavor Components in the Oil Extracted from Golden Melon Seeds

For complete utilization of raw materials and edible oil production, the oil from golden melon seeds (GSs) is extracted via the cold-pressing, hot-pressing, and ultrasound-assisted aqueous enzymatic extraction (AEE), and the fatty acid composition, and nutritional value of the extracted GS oils (GSOs) are analyzed. The volatile compounds present in the GSOs are determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The aroma profiles of different GSO samples are further distinguished by using an electronic nose. A total of 16 fatty acids are identified in the GSO samples, with atherogenic, thrombogenic, and nutritive value indices ranging from 0.142-0.151, 0.366-0.403, and 5.019-5.299, respectively. Moreover, 43 volatile compounds, including esters, hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, pyrazines, and aldehydes are identified. The cold-pressed GSO presents fresh and fruity flavors, while the hot-pressed GSO presents roasted, nutty, fatty, and fruity flavors, and the GSO obtained via AEE presents fatty and fruity flavors. The acid and peroxide contents of these oil samples are 0.69-079 mg g(-1) and 5.17-5.79 mmol kg(-1), respectively. The results indicate that the extraction method affects the fatty acid composition, flavor components, and physiochemical properties of the GSO. This study may help promote the development of edible GSO. Practical applications: With high demand for edible oils, it is of great significance to find natural edible oils from different sources. The oil in golden melon seeds is extracted by different methods. Their fatty acid composition and flavor components are analyzed. The GSO extracted via AEE method is rich in fatty acids composition. This work would guide the development of an edible GSO and increase the value of golden melon.
