How is intolerance of uncertainty related to negative affect in individuals with substance use disorders? The role of the inability to control behaviors when experiencing emotional distress

We used structural equation modeling to assess the role of impaired emotional awareness and clarity (Impaired Awareness/Clarity) and inability to control behaviors when experiencing emotional distress (Inability to Control Behaviors) as an account for the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and negative affect (NA) in individuals with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and healthy controls (HCs) used for comparison. One-hundred and thirty-one individuals with SUDs (42.75% female; mean age = 39.74 11.83) and 131 sex matched HCs (mean age = 40.02 12.34) entered the study. Participants completed questionnaires assessing the constructs of interest. Single-group analyses aimed to identify a baseline model for each group and test the hypothesized direct/indirect relations’ overall significance. Then, a multigroup analysis tested the invariance of model parameters between SUD and HC groups. The model in which IU had both direct and indirect relationships with NA through Impaired Awareness/ Clarity and Inability to Control Behaviors was a good fit to the data. The indirect relationship of IU with NA through Inability to Control Behaviors was significant and moderate-sized. The relationship involving Impaired Awareness/Clarity and Inability to Control Behaviors was small-sized and significant in single group analysis only. The multigroup analysis supported the association of IU with NA through Inability to Control Behaviors in the SUD group. Overall, our study highlights the crucial role of the Inability to Control Behaviors in SUDs and suggests that its association with IU might fuel NA in this population.

MoS2 doping by atomic layer deposition of high-k dielectrics using alcohol as process oxidants

We developed doping technique of transition metal dichalcogenides based on atomic layer deposition (ALD) of oxide thin films. In this study, we deposited ALD Al2O3 overlayer using various oxidant including iso-propyl alcohol (IPA) and ethanol and investigated the doping effects depending on the choice of oxidant for ALD process. The doping effects were investigated by the change in the performance of bottom-gated MoS2 field effect transistors. Experimental results indicate that Al2O3 overlayer deposited using IPA as ALD reactant produces more efficient n-type doping effect compared to ethanol. Moreover, doping was effectively controlled by modulating atomic layer deposition process. ALD process using effective oxidant material is expected to be practically used for realizing the fabrication of threshold voltage-controllable transistors or further applications such as diodes.

Gelatinization, pasting, and rheological properties of pea starch in alcohol solution

In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of different low concentrations of alcohol solution (5%-20%) on the gelatinization and pasting properties of pea starch. A rapid visco analyzer revealed that when the starch concentration was fixed, the viscosity of the starch paste decreased with increasing alcohol concentration. In addition, the texture analyzer results showed that compared to the hydrogel formed in water, the hardness of the gel formed by 15% starch in 10% alcohol increased approximately 2-fold (1696.4 g versus 928.1 g). Furthermore, the rheological results showed that the tan delta value of the gel formed under this condition was second only to that of 20% starch in water, which indicated the gel had a strong network structure. X-ray diffraction analysis showed an increased relative crystallinity of 15% starch gels formed in 10% alcohol (13.2%) compared to the hydrogel formed in water (12.2%). Our study will expand the knowledge of the gelatinization properties of starch in low concentrations of alcohol.

Multivariate data-based optimization of membrane adsorption process for wastewater treatment: Multi-layer perceptron adaptive neural network versus adaptive neural fuzzy inference system

Application of machine-learning methods to assess the batch adsorption of malachite green (MG) dye on chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/zeolite imidazolate frameworks membrane adsorbents (CPZ) was investigated in this study. Our previous research results proved the suitability of the CPZ membranes for wastewater decoloring. In the current work, the residence time was combined with the other operational variables i.e., pH, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dose (AD), to obtain the possible interactions involved in nonequilibrium adsorption. Two well-known soft-computing approaches, multi-layer perceptron adaptive neural network (MLP-ANN) and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), were selected among different machine learning alternatives and then, comprehensively compared with each other considering reliability and accuracy for a 60 number of runs. The ANFIS structure with nine centers of clusters could predict the adsorption performance better than the ANN approach. Root mean square error (RMSE) and R-square were obtained 0.01822 and 0.9958 for the test data, respectively. The interpretability test resulted a linear trend predicted by the model and disclosed that the maximum value of the removal efficiency (99.5%) could be obtained when the amount of the inputs set to the upper limit. Lastly, the sensitivity analysis uncovered that the residence time has a decisive effect (relevancy factor > 80%) on the removal efficiency. According to the results, ANFIS is an effective and reliable tool to optimize and intensify the membrane adsorption process. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of High-Dose Baclofen on Agitation-Related Events Among Patients With Unhealthy Alcohol Use Receiving Mechanical Ventilation A Randomized Clinical Trial

IMPORTANCE Unhealthy alcohol use can lead to agitation in the intensive care unit (ICU). OBJECTIVE To assess whether high-dose baclofen reduces agitation-related events compared with placebo in patients with unhealthy alcohol use receiving mechanical ventilation. DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS This phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial conducted in 18 ICUs in France recruited adults receiving mechanical ventilation who met criteria for unhealthy alcohol use. Patients were enrolled from June 2016 to February 2018; the last follow-up was in May 2019. INTERVENTIONS Baclofen (n = 159), adjusted from 50 to 150 mg per day based on estimated glomerular filtration rate, or placebo (n = 155) during mechanical ventilation up to a maximum of 15 days before gradual dose reduction over 3 to 6 days. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary end point was the percentage of patients with at least 1 agitation-related event over the treatment period. Secondary outcomes included duration of mechanical ventilation, length of ICU stay, and 28-day mortality. RESULTS Among 314 patients who were randomized (mean age, 57 years; 60 [17.2%] women), 313 (99.7%) completed the trial. There was a statistically significant decrease in the percentage of patients who experienced at least 1 agitation-related event in the baclofen group vs the placebo group (31 [19.7%] vs 46 [29.7%]; difference, -9.93%[95% CI, -19.45% to -0.42%]; adjusted odds ratio, 0.59 [95% CI, 0.35-0.99]). Of 18 prespecified secondary end points, 14 were not significantly different. Compared with the placebo group, the baclofen group had a significantly longer median length of mechanical ventilation (9 vs 8 days; difference, 2.00 [95% CI, 0.00-3.00]; hazard ratio [HR] for extubation, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.60-0.97]) and stay in the ICU (14 vs 11 days; difference, 2.00 [95% CI, 0.00-4.00]; HR for discharge, 0.70 [95% CI, 0.54-0.90]). At 28 days, there was no significant difference in mortality in the baclofen vs placebo group (25.3% vs 21.6%; adjusted odds ratio, 1.24 [95% CI, 0.72-2.13]). Delayed awakening (no eye opening at 72 hours after cessation of sedatives and analgesics) occurred in 14 patients (8.9%) in the baclofen group vs 3 (1.9%) in the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Among patients with unhealthy alcohol use receiving mechanical ventilation, treatment with high-dose baclofen, compared with placebo, resulted in a statistically significant reduction in agitation-related events. However, considering the modest effect and the totality of findings for the secondary end points and adverse events, further research is needed to determine the possible role of baclofen in this setting and to potentially optimize dosing.

Nano SnO2 and Sb2O3 combined with CNTs as a high-capacity lithium storage material

The combination of Sb2O3 or SnO2 with graphene has become a research hotpot in recent years. However, several problems, namely the loading of the active materials, space utilization in composites, and the intrinsic volume expansion of Sb2O3 and SnO2, have yet to be fully resolved. To overcome these disadvantages, in this work Sb2O3/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/SnO2 composite have been synthesized, in which the CNTs act as a network to ensure the electronic conductivity and buffer of the volume expansion. The SnO2 nanoparticles are aligned by the CNTs and Sb2O3 is dispersed in the voids between them. Space utilization and the loading of the oxides are thereby maximized. Moreover, the resultant composite retains small amount of water or alcohol, which does not affect the cyclic stability, but may have increased the ionic and electronic conductivity, improving the electrochemical performance. A discharge capacity of 910 mAh g(-1) after 250 cycles at 100 mA g(-1) is realized for Sb2O3/CNT/SnO2. Moreover, the contribution of the pseudocapacitance to the rate discharge capability is obvious, which arises from the different heterointerfaces between Sb2O3/CNTs, CNTs/SnO2 or Sb2O3/SnO2. The homogenous distribution of Sn and Sb in CNTs after cycling leads to a lower discharge voltage, improving the application prospects. Although some collapse and cracks are detected, the CNTs network connects the oxides, ensuring the structural stability and the cyclic stability of Sb2O3/CNT/SnO2. This strategy represents a new concept for the design of multi-component materials for lithium storage.

The burden of non-communicable diseases and mortality in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the pre-, early- and late-HAART era

Objectives To estimate the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mortality among PLHIV in the pre-, early- and late-HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) era. Methods We conducted a cohort study using population-based Danish medical registries including all adult HIV-infected residents of the Central Denmark Region during 1985-2017. For each HIV patient, we selected 10 comparisons from the background population matched by age, sex and municipality of residence. Based on hospital-related diagnoses we estimated the prevalence and incidence of specific NCD at diagnosis and at 5 and 10 years. Results We identified 1043 PLHIV and 10 430 matched comparisons. PLHIV had lower socioeconomic status and more were born outside western Europe. At HIV diagnosis, 21.9% of PHLIV vs. 18.2% of non-HIV individuals had at least one NCD, increasing to 42.2% vs. 25.9% after 10 years. PLHIV had higher prevalence and cumulative incidence of alcohol abuse, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ischaemic heart disease, mental disorders, renal and liver disease, but no increased risk of diabetes mellitus. Only PLHIV in the age groups 41-50 and > 51 years had an increased incidence of osteoporosis. From the pre- to the late-HAART era, 10-year mortality among PLHIV decreased from 45.5% to 9.4% but continued at more than twice that of uninfected comparisons. However, in the late-HAART era, the mortality of PLHIV who were alive 2 years after HIV diagnosis was approaching that of comparisons. Conclusions Even in the late-HAART era, PLHIV have an excess mortality, which may be attributable to several NCDs being more prevalent among PLHIV. The prevalence rates of ischaemic heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and renal disease tend to increase over calendar time. Therefore, improvement of survival and quality of life of PLHIV neets strategies to reduce the risk of developing NCDs, including avoiding toxic antiretroviral therapy and lifestyle changes.

Emotion regulation and experiential avoidance moderate the association between posttraumatic symptoms and alcohol use disorder among Israeli combat veterans

Introduction: the association between Posttraumatic Stress symptoms (PTSS) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) among combat veterans is well established. However, little is known concerning the intertwining effect of distress oriented coping mechanisms on this association. In this study, we sought to explore the moderating role of experiential avoidance (EA), cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES) on the association between PTSS and AUD among Israeli combat veterans. Method: Participants were 189 Israel Defense Forces (IDF) male combat veterans (mean age = 30.03) who completed a set of validated self-report questionnaires assessing PTSS, AUD, EA, CR and ES. Moderation analyses were conducted using a four-step hierarchical regression analysis and an ordinary least squares regression analysis. Results: Analyses indicated that individuals with average or high levels of EA or ES exhibited significant positive association between PTSS and AUD, yet those with low levels of EA or ES exhibited no significant association between PTSS and AUD (b = 0.14,Confidence Interval (CI)[0.06, 0.22, SE = 0.04, t = 3.65, p = .000, 95%] for EA and b = 0.17, CI[0.07, 0.25, SE = 0.04, t = 3.69, p = .000, 95%] for ES). In addition, CR moderated the association between PTSS and AUD (b = 0.18, CI[0.07, 0.29, SE = 0.06, t = 3.24, p = .001, 95%]), so that the association between PTSS and AUD is positive and stronger for higher levels of CR. Conclusions: Our findings imply that EA, ES and CR and emotion regulation may be major facilitators of the association between PTSS and AUD among combat veterans. These findings are discussed in the Israeli context as well as in light of a general psychological perspective.

Effect of ethanol on the microstructure and rheological properties of whey proteins: Acid-induced cold gelation

The microstructure and mechanical properties of ethanol-denatured, acid-induced whey protein (WPI) cold-set gels have been monitored by confocal laser scanning microscopy and rheology. As the ethanol concentration increased, the porosity of the gels progressively decreased, with gels prepared at ethanol concentrations of 50 and 70 g/100 g lacking microscopically visible pores. Large aggregates were observed at ethanol concentrations of 70 g/100 g immediately after alcohol addition. A sharp increase in storage modulus was noted at ethanol concentrations between 30 and 50 g/100 g, while the gel strength at 50 g/100 g, was up to three times higher compared to that of heat-denatured gels. In general, the ethanol-denatured whey protein cold-set gels were prone to phase separation. Ethanol-denatured cold-set whey protein gels exhibited mechanical and microstructural properties that may offer alternative means of structuring protein-enriched food formulations and designing novel food products.

Influence of Higher Alcohol Additives in Methanol-Gasoline Blends on the Performance and Emissions of an Unmodified Automotive SI Engine: A Review

More stringent emission norms are implemented all over the world to protect the environment from vehicular pollution. Biofuels are one of the best alternative solutions to reduce cost and environmental pollution. Among many alternate fuels, alcohol is a leading fuel used in automotive spark-ignition engines in pure or blended form. The capability of methanol to substitute gasoline has been known for a long time. This paper aims to systematically review methanol-gasoline blend with higher alcohol additives (ternary blends) as a transportation fuel in unmodified automotive spark-ignition engines. This review summarizes the previous research in methanol-gasoline blends with and without additives on spark-ignition engines’ performance and emission characteristics. Many researchers found that methanol-gasoline blended fuels improve engine performance and emissions. Generally, alcohols burn very effectively and produce only fewer emissions compared to gasoline. Still, lower alcohol may cause some problems such as increased specific fuel consumption, phase separation and corrosion. These problems are further optimized using higher alcohol additives through improved energy content, kinematic viscosity, corrosion resistance, water tolerance and phase stability. Several research studies have been carried out in the past years, which focused mainly on single alcohol blended fuels for spark-ignition engines. Thus, a comprehensive survey of performance, combustion and emission characteristics of methanol-gasoline blended fuel with higher alcohol additives is necessary to show the potential of ternary blends in automotive engines.

Balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. In my other articles, you can also check out more blogs about 5675-51-4. Category: alcohols-buliding-blocks.
