Use of Hanseniaspora guilliermondii and Hanseniaspora opuntiae to enhance the aromatic profile of beer in mixed-culture fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Beer production is predominantly carried out by Saccharomyces species, such as S. cerevisiae and S. pastorianus. However, the introduction of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in the brewing process is now seen as a promising strategy to improve and differentiate the organoleptic profile of beer. In this study, 17 non-Saccharomyces strains of 12 distinct species were isolated and submitted to a preliminary sensory evaluation to determine their potential for beer bioflavouring. Hanseniaspora guilliermondii IST315 and H. opuntiae IST408 aroma profiles presented the highest acceptability and were described as having ‘fruity’ and ‘toffee’ notes, respectively. Their presence in mixed-culture fermentations with S. cerevisiae US-05 did not influence attenuation and ethanol concentration of beer but had a significant impact in its volatile composition. Notably, while both strains reduced the total amount of ethyl esters, H. guilliermondii IST315 greatly increased the concentration of acetate esters, especially when sequentially inoculated, leading to an 8.2-fold increase in phenylethyl acetate (‘rose’, ‘honey’ aroma) in the final beverage. These findings highlight the importance of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in shaping the aroma profile of beer and suggest a role for Hanseniaspora spp. in improving it.

Au coated ZnO/MWCNTs nanocomposites film-induced four-wave-mixing effect for multi-wavelength generation in erbium-doped fiber laser

High optical nonlinearity of nanostructured materials has been attested as a reliable technique for the generation of a multi-wavelength fiber laser. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a simple and efficient method for generating continuous-wave (CW) multi-wavelength erbium-doped laser (EDFL) using a nonlinear effect of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly nonlinear nanocomposite film. A nanocomposite film containing gold nanostars coated zinc-oxide nanorods/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZnO-NRs@Au NSs/MWCNTs) embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer was prepared, characterized, and then incorporated into the laser cavity to induce the FWM effect. Benefiting from the FWM processes, the induced intensity-dependent gain alleviates the intense gain-competition in the EDFL and increases the number of lasing wavelengths. A five-lasing line with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 36.3 dBm has been observed by appropriately adjusting the pump strength to 300 mW. Repeated measurements verified the high stability of the laser operating at room temperature with less than 3 dBm fluctuations on output power and 0.21 nm lasing wavelength drifts for all wavelengths cases. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first demonstration of multi-wavelength fiber laser utilizing ZnO-NRs@Au NSs/MWCNTs nanocomposite. The results reveal the excellent nonlinear optical properties of the prepared nanocomposite and lay a foundation for its application in the generation of a multi-wavelength fiber laser.

Mitigation of nivalenol using alcoholic fermentation and magnetic field application

This study aimed at evaluating mitigation of nivalenol (NIV) in alcoholic fermentation with magnetic field application (MF). Mitigation was related to both the glutathione (GSH) redox molecule and the enzyme peroxidase (PO), which were synthesized by Saccharomyces cerevisiae US-05. The limit of detection and limit of quantification are 0.5 mg L-1 and 2.0 mg L-1, respectively. The method has satisfactory analytical performance with a linearity of R-2 >= 0.998, recoveries of 103.7-111.0%, and precision of 1.8-6.2%. It is also validated and successfully applied to quantifying osteopontin content in bovine, buffalo, yak, sheep and goat milk.

The relationship between alcohol and cannabis use with nonsuicidal self-injury among adolescent inpatients: Examining the 90 days prior to psychiatric hospitalization

Background: This study examined the trajectories of alcohol use, cannabis use, suicide planning (SP), and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) prior to hospitalization and examined the role of alcohol and cannabis use, independently and jointly, in predicting NSSI on a daily level and over time. Methods: Participants included 71 adolescents hospitalized for suicide risk (75% female; 25% male; M-age = 15.79). All participants drank alcohol at least once in the prior 90-days. We conducted mixed effect models to assess the trajectories of alcohol use, cannabis use, and NSSI over the 90-days prior hospitalization. To test the effect of SP, alcohol use, and cannabis use on NSSI, we conducted logistic random effect models, while controlling for demographics. Results: SP (OR = 4.47, p < 0.001) and suicide ideation (SI) (OR = 10.09, p < 0.001) significantly increased the odds of engaging in NSSI. Neither cannabis nor alcohol use independently predicted the odds of engaging in NSSI, however, the co-occurrence of alcohol and cannabis use increased the odds of engaging in NSSI on a given day (OR = 30.5, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Study findings extend current knowledge about the longitudinal and day-to-day relationships between alcohol and cannabis use and NSSI. Results underscore the importance of developing interventions that address polysubstance use among suicidal adolescents engaging in NSSI. Promotion effect of La on oxygen vacancy formation over Zn-Cr based catalyst for isobutanol synthesis from syngas

A series of catalysts were designed and synthesized via doping lanthanum into ZnCr oxide to realize efficient synthesis of isobutanol from syngas. By applying a combination of characterizations (XRD, TEM, EPR, XPS and in situ FT-IR) and DFT calculations, the effects of lanthanum promoter on catalyst structure and catalytic performance were investigated. With the doping of lanthanum, ZnCrLax composite oxides with a novel catalyst structure were constructed, in which Zn atom at tetrahedron site was partly substituted by doping La atom. The presence of this structure enhanced the formation of more oxygen vacancy sites and further benefitted the CO activation. In addition, formate intermediate was easier to generate and exhibited superior stability over ZnCrLax surface thus leaded to remarkably promoted catalytic activity. The ZnCrLa0.05 catalyst achieved optimum total alcohols selectivity of 61%, and the fraction of isobutanol reached as high as 24.6% under CO conversion of 23%.

In vitro biotransformation and evaluation of potential transformation products of chlorinated paraffins by high resolution accurate mass spectrometry

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are high production chemicals, which leads to their ubiquitous presence in the environment. To date, few studies have measured CPs in humans and typically at relatively low concentrations, despite indications that exposure may be high compared to various persistent organic pollutants. The aim of this study is to investigate the in vitro biotransformation of CPs by human liver fractions. We determined the changes of the CP concentrations after the enzymatic transformation with human liver microsomes using a two-tiered in vitro approach. CP concentrations decreased with human liver microsomes, with the decreases of 33-94% after incubating with different groups of enzymes for 2 h. The profiles of CP rapidly shifted after the incubation with human liver microsomes. In addition, the concentrations of CPs and the biotransformation products were tentatively measured using high-resolution mass spectrometric analysis, including very short CP (carbon chain length <10), alcohols, ketones, and carboxylic acids. C-C bond cleavage is a potential transformation pathway for CPs, and ketones are potential products of CP biotransformation, especially for long-chain CPs (C->17). The ketone products may be investigated as CP exposure biomarker in biomonitoring studies.

Automatic cognitions as mediators of parental influence on adolescent cannabis use

Aims: Multiple social influences affect cannabis use in adolescents, including parental and peer cannabis use norms. However, the mechanisms of influence underlying these social influences remain unclear. Recent studies have suggested that cognitions about cannabis use and the effects of cannabis may mediate social influences. The current study explored the relationship between automatic self-generated cognitions and their relationship with parental influences on cannabis use in a sample of n = 675 11 to 16-year-old adolescents over three years (Mean Age: 13.96, SD = 0.88, 56.4% female). Methods: Participants reported perceptions of parental cannabis use and completed a cannabis word association task (CWAT), an open-ended cannabis outcome expectancy liking (COEL) task, and measures of cannabis use in the past year. Results: Perceived parental use did not directly predict cannabis use two years later. However, a latent construct loading on both CWAT and COEL scores strongly predicted cannabis use over the following year. Structural modelling demonstrated that the association between previous cannabis use and parental cannabis use and adolescents’ cannabis use over the next two years was fully mediated by cognitions. Conclusion: The results of the study are discussed and interpreted through the lens of dual-process theories.
