Sulfobetaine-based polydisulfides with tunable upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in water alcohols mixture, depolymerization kinetics and surface wettability

Hypothesis: Synthesis of a new family of polymers having a polydisulfide structure can be conducted from sulfobetaine-based derivative of natural (R)-lipoic acid. A polydisulfide backbone of polymer can be depolymerized by response to external stimuli and sulfobetaine pendant groups ensure the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behaviour temperatures that can be modulated according to the nature of the solvent and concentration. Experiments: Sulfobetaine-bearing polydisulfides were synthesized from dithiolane derivatives and then characterized. UCST behavior of the polymers in water and in mixtures containing different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) was investigated. The regeneration of monomers from the polymers in response to external stimuli was examined using UV-vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Tunable surface wettability were shown on the grafted polymers. Findings: Decreasing polarity and/or increasing alcohol percentage in the water mixtures induced an increase in the cloud points of the polymers in the solutions. Thermoresponsive behaviour were repeatable and fully reversible with negligible hysteresis from aggregate to unimer state. The regeneration of monomers by depolymerization was tunable by temperature and sunlight. A thickness dependence on surface wettability was observed on wafers covalently modified with polydisulfides. Fischer-Tropsch reaction within zeolite crystals for selective formation of gasoline-ranged hydrocarbons

Product selectivity control is attractive in Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis but it is still a challenge, because the F-T products follow the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distribution with maximized gasoline-ranged (C-5-C-11) hydrocarbon selectivity at 45%. Herein, we report a strategy by optimizing the gasoline selectivity to outperform the ASF limitation. The key to this success is fixation of the metal nanoparticles within zeolite crystals (metal@zeolite), where the zeolite micropore adjusts the product selectivity. For example, the Ru@NaY exhibited the gasoline selectivity 64.3% in the F-T reaction, which is significantly higher than the ASF limitation and about 2 times of that (32.8%) over conventionally supported Ru catalyst (Ru/NaY). This investigation might offer an alternative route for the direct transformation of syngas to liquid fuels with controllable selectivities. A facile and robust route to polyvinyl alcohol-based triboelectric nanogenerator containing flame-retardant polyelectrolyte with improved output performance and fire safety

Harvesting energy from various ambient mechanical vibrations and motions is a promising green technology to provide electrical power for integrated electronic devices or sensors. However, some applications of the triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) in harsh environment faces challenges of fire safety. Herein, we proposed a facile, robust, and low-cost solution-casting method to prepare flame-resistant triboelectric polymer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by doping PPA-PEI polyelectrolyte synthesized from phenyl phosphonic acid and branched polyethyleneimine. The PVA/PPA-PEI film containing 10 wt% PPA-PEI not only self-extinguished immediately after the burner moved away while the neat PVA film burned thoroughly, but also showed the minimum peak heat release rate (PHRR) of 148.7 +/- 4.2 W/g with a reduction of similar to 47.8%. Contributed by the hybrid of electron and ion transfer on the triboelectric layers during the electrification process, the resultant PVA/10 wt% PPA-PEI: PVDF flame-retarding TENG also exhibited the maximum open-circuit voltage of 28.8 +/- 0.4 V, short-circuit current of 62.3 +/- 5.4 mu A, and power of 228.8 mu W, which were respectively 50.0%, 170.0%, and 57.4% higher than those of the pristine PVA: PVDF TENG when mechanically excited by a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) working at 2000 mu m and 10 Hz. The incorporation of flame-retardant polyelectrolyte into common polymers provides a promising pathway to make traditional TENGs with both enhanced flame retardancy and electrical output.

Using surfactants for controlling rotifer contamination in mass cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Frequent microzooplankton contamination such as rotifers in Chlorella mass culture often causes devastating effects on biomass production. In this study, five surfactants were used to control contamination by a rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, in Chlorella pyrenoidosa XQ-20044 cultures. Laboratory results showed that the minimal effective concentrations of surfactants for complete control of B. calyciflorus were 7.5, 10, 10, 10, and 15 mg L-1 for primary alcohol ethoxylate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, sodium alcohol ether sulfate, coconut diethanolamide, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, respectively. However, only 10 mg L-1 sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and 7.5-10 mg L-1 primary alcohol ethoxylate had no negative effects on algal growth. Moreover, in a 5 m(2) open raceway pond, 10 mg L-1 sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate ensured swift and total elimination of rotifers, while the final dry weight of the algae reached >0.74 g L-1 whereas the cost of using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate was only $ 0.014. The results of this study indicated that sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate approach is fast-acting, highly effective, and a low-cost treatment. Therefore, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate has great potential for biological contamination control in microalgae mass culture without a negative impact on algal growth.

Evaluation of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis as protective culture for active packaging of non-fermented foods: Creamy mushroom soup and sliced cooked ham

An innovative edible coating, made from food grade polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and gelatin hydrolysates (HGel), was evaluated as a carrier of Lactococcus lactis acting as anti-listeria protective culture for refrigerated foods. The coating was applied on a compostable polylactic acid film surface and its anti-listeria activity was evaluated at 4 degrees C in a liquid culture medium and in solid agar, inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes. The best results were obtained in agar, exerting a bactericide effect, whereas in the liquid medium the coating had bacteriostatic behaviour. Furthermore, the active coating was applied to the surface of bags or separator liners made from polylactic acid. Its effectivity was evaluated with creamy mushroom soup (bags) and sliced cooked ham (separator liners) previously inoculated with L. monocytogenes and stored at 4 degrees C. Results showed that the coating was effective at inhibiting pathogen growth; however, it did not display a bactericide effect in the foods. In addition, L. lactis remained viable in all experiments conducted in this study. The acidification produced by L. lactis, because of the generation of organic acids, did not compromise the sensory properties of the sliced cooked ham after 16 days of refrigerated storage. In contrast, consumers perceived a mushroom soup acidification because of a greater decrease in pH than the sliced cooked ham. This study demonstrates that a food grade polyvinyl alcohol polymer blended with gelatin hydrolysates can be used as a carrier of protective cultures of L. lactis to increase the microbiological safety of refrigerated foods.

Trait impulsivity and health risk behaviors: A latent profile analysis

Substance use and risky sexual behavior are negative health outcomes associated with the heterogeneous construct of impulsivity and emerging adulthood. The present study appears to be the first to examine how different facets of impulsive personality may be used to depict various profiles that differentially predict engagement in substance use and risky sexual behavior. Specifically, this study extends previous research by providing a comprehensive examination of impulsivity profiles in relation to various health risk outcomes via negative urgency, lack of premeditation, lack of perseverance, sensation seeking, and positive urgency. Participants (N = 599) completed the Short Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation Seeking, and Positive Urgency Scale (SUPPS-P), the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), and the Student Sexual Risks Scale (SSRS). Impulsivity profiles were examined using latent profile analysis in which varying degrees of the SUPPS-P facets were grouped together based on participant response patterns. Results of latent profile analyses indicated an optimal 5-profile solution (low total impulsivity, moderate total impulsivity, high lack of premeditation/lack of perseverance facets, moderate positive urgency/negative urgency/sensation seeking facets, high positive urgency/negative urgency/sensation seeking facets).

Estimating person-to-person variability in VOC emissions from personal care products used during showering

An increasing fraction of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions come from the domestic use of solvents, contained within myriad commonplace consumer products. Emission rates are often poorly characterized and depend significantly on individual behavior and specific product formulation and usage. Time-concentration profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) arising from the use of a representative selection of personal care products (PCPs) during showering are generated, and person-to-person variability in emissions calculated. A panel of 18 participants used a standardized set of products, dosages, and application times during showering in a controlled indoor bathroom setting. Proton transfer mass spectrometry was used to measure the in-room VOC evolution of limonene (representing the sum of monoterpenes), benzyl alcohol, and ethanol. The release of VOCs had reproducible patterns between users, but noticeable variations in absolute peak concentrations, despite identical amounts of material being used. The amounts of VOC emitted to air for one showering activity were as follows: limonene (1.77 mg +/- 42%), benzyl alcohol (1.07 mg +/- 41%), and ethanol (0.33 mg +/- 78%). Real-world emissions to air were between 1.3 and 11 times lower than bottom-up estimates based on dynamic headspace measurements of product emissions rates, likely a result of PCPs being washed away before VOC evaporation could occur.

Supramolecular architecture of a multi-component biomimetic lipid barrier formulation

Hypothesis: Biomimetic liquid crystalline systems are widely used in skin care cosmetics and topical pharmaceutical preparations. Our ability to rationally design such formulations, however, is hampered by our incomplete understanding of their structure on the nanoscale. Experiments: Using polarized light microscopy and small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering, the molecular architecture and properties of a barrier formulation prepared from distearoylphosphatidylcholine mixed with long chain fatty acid and alcohols, with and without antimicrobial pentanediols are directly probed. The nature and composition of the phases identified are determined through small-angle neutron scattering studies using chain-deuterated components, and the detailed structure and dynamics of the gel network lamellae are determined through molecular dynamics simulations. Findings: The formulations show molecular ordering with long and short periodicity lamellar phases and there is little change in these structures caused by changes in temperature, drying, or the application of shear stress. The diol-free formulation is demonstrated to be self-preserving, and the added pentanediols are shown to distribute within the interlamellar regions where they limit availability of water for microbial growth. In culmination of these studies, we develop a more complete picture of these complex biomimetic preparations, and thereby enable their structure-based design. (c) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Cannabis use disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder: The prevalence of comorbidity in veterans of recent conflicts

Aims: Veterans have high rates of cannabis use, and rates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) are rising among this population. These rising rates are particularly true for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is common among veterans of recent conflicts, Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND). Although prior work has documented links between PTSD and cannabis use, a better understanding of the intersection among CUD, PTSD, and other disorders in real-world clinical practice can inform prevention and treatment efforts. This study examined the prevalence and comorbidities of CUD and PTSD in OFE/OIF/OND veterans. Method: The study analyzed data from the Veterans Affairs Corporate Data Warehouse (2010-2016) for returning war veterans who were diagnosed with CUD (N = 46,268). The study determined prevalence of PTSD, and examined additional differences in comorbidities. Results: The prevalence of a comorbid PTSD diagnosis among OEF/OIF/OND veterans with a CUD diagnosis was 72.3%. Further analysis revealed additional co-occurring disorders. Veterans with a diagnosis of CUD and PTSD were more likely to have a comorbid diagnosis of depression (odds ratio, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.62-1.71), panic disorder (odds ratio; 1.58; 95% CI, 1.43-1.75), alcohol use disorder (odds ratio; 1.30; 95% CI, 1.24-1.35), opioid use disorder (odds ratio; 1.52; 95% CI, 1.43-1.62), and insomnia (odds ratio; 1.74; 95% CI, 1.65-1.84) than veterans without a PTSD diagnosis. Conclusions: Findings highlight that the majority of returning war veterans with CUD are highly complex. Our findings substantiate the need for urgent, comprehensive care for veterans with co-occurring CUD and PTSD, including integrated and transdiagnostic treatment approaches.

Synthesis and Characterization of Poly (vinyl alcohol) / Fullerene C60 Membrane via Chemical and Radiation Crosslinking

Fullerene C60 (FULL-C60) was used as a nano-filler in the preparation of the chemical-crosslinking polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by glutaraldehyde (Glut) which is copolymerized with acrylate oligomers, 2carboxyethyl acrylate (CEA) followed by gamma irradiation. The effect of the FULL-C60 content on the gel content and swelling behavior of Glut-(PVA/CEA)-FULL-C60 copolymer hydrogel was investigated. The results revealed an increase in the gel content and a significant reduction in swelling of the nanocomposite material. There are influences for the PVA molecular weight, fullerene content, and absorbed dose on the gel content of the prepared nanocomposite. The irradiation of chemical crosslinked nanocomposites demonstrated approximately a 90% gelation over a range of 50-300 kGy irradiation doses. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed a homogeneous distribution of nanocomposites in the composite matrix. The improvement in the thermal stability of radiation Glut(PVA/CEA) and Glut-(PVA-CEA)-FULL-C60 was evaluated using the thermogravimetric analysis Technique (TGA). The mechanical properties were examined via dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) which showed significant variation because of the addition of nanocomposites and irradiation doses.
