Sonochemical degradation of surfactants with different charge types: Effect of the critical micelle concentration in the interfacial region of the cavity

Ionic surfactants tend to accumulate in the interfacial region of ultrasonic cavitation bubbles (cavities) because of their surface active properties and because they are difficult to evaporate in cavitation bubbles owing to their extremely low volatilities. Hence, sonolysis of ionic surfactants is expected to occur in the interfacial region of the cavity. In this study, we performed sonochemical degradation of surfactants with different charge types: anionic, cationic, zwitterionic, and nonionic. We then estimated the degradation rates of the surfactants to clarify the surfactant behavior in the interfacial region of cavitation bubbles. For all of the surfactants investigated, the degradation rate increased with increasing initial bulk concentration and reached a maximum value. The initial bulk concentration to obtain the maximum degradation rate had a positive correlation with the critical micelle concentration (cmc). The initial bulk concentrations of the anionic surfactants were lower than their cmcs, while those of the cationic surfactants were higher than their cmcs. These results can be explained by the negatively charged cavity surface and the effect of the coexisting counterions of the surfactants.

Construction of hierarchical photocatalysts by growing ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on Prussian blue analogue-derived bimetallic sulfides for solar co-production of H-2 and organic chemicals

Exploring highly efficient bifunctional photocatalysts for simultaneous H-2 evolution and organic chemical production in pure water represents a green route for sustainable solar energy storage and conversion. Herein, a facile strategy was explored for preparing a hierarchical porous heterostructure of Fe4Ni5S8@ZnIn2S4(FNS@ZIS) by the in situ growth of ZIS nanosheets on Prussian blue analogue (PBA)-derived bimetallic FNS sulfides. A series of FNS@ZIS hierarchical structures were facilely prepared by adjusting the loading amount (n%) of FNS (n = 19, 26, and 32 for FNS@ZIS-1-3). These structures can efficiently drive the solar co-production of H2 and organic chemicals. The optimal co-production was achieved with FNS@ZIS-2, affording a H-2 evolution rate of 10465 mu mol.g(-1).h(-1), along with high selectivity for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde (>99.9%). The performance was 22 and 31 times higher than that of FNS and ZIS, respectively, and even superior to the state-of-the-art results achieved using various sacrificial agents. Further mechanistic study indicated that the unique hierarchical core/shell architecture can facilitate interfacial charge separation, afford bimetallic synergy, abundant active sites and excellent photostability. This work highlights a simple and efficient method for preparing porous multimetallic hierarchical structures for the solar co-production of organic chemicals and H-2 fuel. Interactive Effects of Quality of Life and Related Factors on Alcohol Use Outcomes

This investigation derives its impetus from public health concerns around detecting, mitigating, and preventing the deleterious effects that alcohol use can cause particularly in advanced age. We aim to complement gerontological research by exploring the interactive effects of quality of life and related factors on alcohol use outcomes assessed by the Drinking Problem Index. The study is based on cross-sectional data collected from questionnaires mailed to a randomly drawn sample of 6,000 Norwegian adults aged 62 and older (participation rate: 32%). According to the Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) analysis, constellations of interactive factors emerged differently for women and men, and, between non-problem and problem drinkers. For women, drinking outcomes were related to intra-psychic functioning, and for men, to physical health and social situation. An ongoing quality-of-life assessment may be very important in the comprehensive assistance provided to those older people who are vulnerable to undergoing alcohol-related harms.

Cheers together, but not alone: Peer drinking moderates alcohol consumption following interpersonal stress

In view of the importance of the need to belong in motivating behavior, we examined whether interpersonal and academic stress differentially influence social and solitary alcohol consumption and whether social and solitary alcohol consumption differentially predict next-day interpersonal and academic stress. Based on research suggesting that drinking with friends is related to increased alcohol consumption following belongingness threat, we also examined whether peer consumption moderates associations between daily interpersonal stress and social drinking. Each day for 30 days, 1641 undergraduates reported stress, alcohol consumption, and peer consumption. Academic stress was related to lower levels of social and solitary alcohol consumption. Interpersonal stress was associated with greater social alcohol consumption, but only when students reported being around others who were drinking greater than average peer quantities. However, although social drinking was related to lower next-day academic stress, it was unrelated to next-day interpersonal stress. Findings are consistent with the notion that individuals’ perceptions of peers’ alcohol use might serve as a signal to join in this behavior to reduce belongingness threats associated with interpersonal stressors, although this may not be an effective strategy.

Comprehensive ethoxymer characterization of complex alcohol ethoxy sulphate products by mixed-mode high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to charged aerosol detection

The present work describes a simultaneous mixed-mode high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method combined with a universal and non-selective-response detector for the complete ethoxymer profiling of alcohol ethoxy sulphate mixtures. The optimized HPLC methodology combines the dual hydrophilic (HILIC) and reversed-phase selectivity of a surfactant-type column in order to render a comprehensive and simultaneous separation of more than 50 endogenous ethoxymers in a single analysis. Furthermore, an accurate quantitation of every single analyte was achieved using a final universal charged aerosol detector (CAD) including specific mathematical processing tools. Results obtained helped describing a complete alkyl chain and ethoxymer distribution of the investigated AES samples. Method validation evidences provided reliability of the individual ethoxymer contributions determined with the proposed HPLC -CAD methodology. Regarding accuracy including independent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments, an excellent correlation was found between the structural information provided by a COSY NMR spectrum and the CAD results regarding the mono/polyethoxylated and the nonethoxylated/ethoxylated distribution. Additional calculations including the average molecular weight and the degree of ethoxylation for the reference AES sample showed minimum differences (relative error 1 %) between the two considered techniques. An outstanding precision and linearity along the working concentration range (r 2 0.999) was also observed. The individual limit of detection for the target sulphate ethoxymers was determined to be in the low ppm range. Further validated distribution profiles for a large number of AES samples demonstrated the applicability of the optimized HPLC -CAD methodology to routine surfactant screenings. Therefore, the hereby developed methodology provided extensive information regarding the detailed individual ethoxymer profile of AES formulations, which can be extremely useful for the surfactant industry in order to gain information on specific synthesis routes and/or detergency properties. Towards aromatics from biomass: Prospective Life Cycle Assessment of bio-based aniline

Bio-based chemicals are seen as a potential stepping-stone towards a more sustainable chemical industry. However, while bio-based routes are already available for various organic alcohols and acids, the direct bio-based production of aromatic compounds has been difficult so far. Recently, the first bio-based process for the production of the important aromatic aniline has been realized. The process produces bio-based aniline via two-stages: first, sugar is fermented by Corynebacterium Glutamicum to aminobenzoic acid, which is then catalytically decarboxylated to aniline. In this study, we present a prospective Life Cycle Assessment for bio-based aniline production to evaluate the environmental potential compared to fossil-based aniline production. Our results suggest that the bio-based production could reduce the global warming impacts of aniline from cradle-to-grave by 35e69% relative to fossil-based production, depending on the type of biomass feedstock. However, bio-based aniline could also substantially increase eutrophication and acidification, a trade-off commonly observed for bio-based processes. Thus, the novel production route is promising and expands the scope of bio-based chemicals towards aromatics. (c) 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Chemically building interpenetrating polymeric networks of Bi-crosslinked hydrogel macromolecules for membrane supercapacitors

Macromolecular polymer hydrogels used in flexible supercapacitors and batteries have attracted extensive attention in recent years. In this paper, we use a simple polymer interpenetrating technology involving covalent cross-linking and non-covalent cross-linking aspects based on polyvinyl alcohol and carboxylated chitosan to prepare a flexible polymer hydrogel membrane for supercapacitor. The obtained hydrogel membrane has good flexibility and high ionic conductivity of 2.561 x 10(-2) s.cm(-1). The hydrogel electrode membrane prepared by in-situ polymerization of aniline exhibits an area specific capacitance of 580 mF.cm(-2) at a current density of 0.5 mA.cm(-2). And the symmetric all-gel-state supercapacitor with hydrogel membrane as the gel electrolyte shows a high specific capacitance of 325 mF.cm(-2) at 1.0 mA.cm(-2). We believe that this hydrogel film has considerable application prospects in flexible wearable electronic devices.

Joint Effect of Alcohol Drinking and Environmental Cadmium Exposure on Hypertension in Korean Adults: Analysis of Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2008 to 2013

Background Hypertension is a common disease found in 1.13 billion adults worldwide. Several animal studies have provided evidence of the joint effect of alcohol drinking and cadmium exposure on hypertension. However, no epidemiologic study has examined the association between these 2 risk factors and hypertension. Therefore, we examined the individual effects of alcohol drinking and cadmium and the joint effect of their coexposure on hypertension in the general population. Methods We analyzed data from 8,403 South Korean adults who had been randomly assigned to the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2008 to 2013. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate the association of alcohol drinking and blood cadmium concentration with blood pressure and the odds ratio (OR) for hypertension. Results The weighted prevalence of hypertension and high-risk drinking was 25.7 and 13.6%, respectively. The weighted geometric mean of blood cadmium levels was 0.94 mu g/L (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.93 to 0.96). After adjusting for demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, health-related behaviors, and dietary and disease variables, the OR for hypertension in the group with the high-risk alcohol drinking was 1.67 (95% CI: 1.34 to 2.06) compared with the group without high-risk alcohol drinking. When the highest and the lowest blood cadmium quartiles were compared, the OR for hypertension was 1.46 (95% CI: 1.15 to 1.86). The positive joint effect of high-risk drinking and blood cadmium levels was statistically significant for systolic blood pressure (SBP; p = 0.037) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP; p < 0.001). Conclusions Our results show that heavy alcohol drinking had a joint effect with cadmium exposure to increase the risk of hypertension. Future efforts are needed to reduce alcohol drinking and environmental cadmium exposure to prevent hypertension in the general population. A reaction mechanism is the microscopic path by which reactants are transformed into products. Each step is an elementary reaction. Modified Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised: Psychometric Validation in a Psychiatric Sample of Young Adults with Predominantly Polysubstance Use

Introduction: Measures of motives for alcohol use provide an important avenue for understanding underlying psychological reasons that drive substance use and predict distinct patterns of use. The Modified Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised (MDMQ-R; Grant, Stewart, O’Connor, Blackwell, Conrod, 2007) measures five drinking motives: social, enhancement, conformity, coping-with-anxiety, and coping-with-depression. The MDMQ-R and its predecessors have previously been validated only in non-clinical normative samples. Purpose: Therefore, the present study aimed to validate the factor structure and internal consistency of the MDMQ-R in a diverse psychiatric sample of substance-using young adults that presented with either exclusive alcohol use or polysubstance use. Method: Participants were 255 substance-using young adults (18-26 years; M = 21.17) admitted to the young adult partial hospitalization treatment program at a private psychiatric hospital (62% female; 78% White; 43% students). Results: A confirmatory factor analysis revealed that items loaded on their respective latent factors (ps < 0.01; loadings between 0.50 and 0.90; reliabilities between 0.80 and 0.94). However, goodness of fit statistics were not reflective of model fit found in Grant et al. (2007) in the overall sample, as well as in alcohol-only and polysubstance-using samples. Discussion: Results suggest that the factor structure of the MDMQ-R did not replicate in the present sample. Potential explanations and future directions are discussed in light of the results, including generalizability and clinical utility. Girdling stimulates anthocyanin accumulation and promotes sugar, organic acid, amino acid level and antioxidant activity in red plum: An overview of skin and pulp metabolomics

Girdling is a widespread agronomic technique to increase the fruit quality characteristics (e.g. size, solid soluble content [SSC] and colour). However, the information on the fruit metabolic changes related to this practice still remains unclear and fragmentary. Moreover, girdling duration and application time may greatly affect the plant/ fruit metabolic responses producing sometimes counterproductive results. Fruit quality, metabolomic and antioxidant analyses were conducted to characterise the effects of two different girdling dates (4- and 2-weeks before the harvest, 4 W and 2 W, respectively) in skin and pulp of red-fleshed plum (Prunus cerasifera var. pissardii). Overall, the pulp metabolism was altered in both 4 W and 2 W Girdling by inducing accumulation of sugars (sucrose and trehalose), sugar alcohols (inositol and xylitol), organic acids (especially some TCA cycle intermediates such as alpha-ketoglutaric, citric, isocitric, fumaric and malic acid), amino acids (beta-alanine and L-proline), anthocyanins and other phenols. In the skin only girdling 4 W showed major significant differences compared to the control increasing the fruit quality characteristics (size, SSC, dry matter and red colour) and showing greater metabolic changes with respect to the controls. Furthermore, the total antioxidant activity was also increased in both skin and pulp respect to other treatment only in Girdling 4 W. This approach could be used with both P. cerasifera plums as well as other red-fleshed fruit species in order to ensure red-fleshed fruits production with a uniform red colouration and higher content of bioactive compounds.
