Determination of ethyl alcohol concentration was performed in 167 samples of alcoholic beverages (craft beers, soft drinks, wines, and cider). We applied headspace gas chromatography using a dual column/dual flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID/FID), a technique routinely used in forensic toxicology. The method was linear in range, from 0.01 to 20.0%, with a coefficient of determination of 0.999 (R2). The limit of quantification was 0.01%; the detection limit was 0.003%. Furthermore, very good validation parameters were achieved (precision and accuracy below 5%). The samples were analyzed for compliance with EU standards and recommendations of The Beer Judge Certification Program. Kinetics models of transesterification reaction for biodiesel production: A theoretical analysis

The kinetics of the transesterification reaction has been explored theoretically. A general rate equation (GRE) was obtained for kinetics modeling of transesterification at the entire time of reaction based on a three-step mechanism. It has been shown that the GRE model converts to a Second-Order (SO) model at short initial times of reaction and it converts to Pseudo-First-Order (PFO) model at short initial times of reaction and high concentration of alcohol. Also, a modified form of the Second-Order model (MSO) was derived when the reaction is spontaneous (at Delta(r) G << 0 conditions or at short initial times of reaction). The accuracy of theoretical models and our assumptions was evaluated by three sets of experimental data selected at literature. It has been shown that the accuracy of PFO, SO, and MSO models followed the order of MSO > SO > PFO at short initial times while the GRE model is a suitable kinetics model at the entire times of reaction. Also, our research, contrary to what has been reported so far in published papers, shows that pseudo-first-order and second-order models are only accurate for kinetics modeling of the transesterification reaction at short initial times of reaction. As a binder-free cathode for solid-state aqueous ZIBs, the VOH/rGO-P film attains excellent electrochemical capacity as high as 481 mAh.g(-1) at 0.1 A.g(-1). Depressive symptoms among older adults with HIV in Namibia: The role of social support and spirituality

Background: More than 60% of older adults living with HIV reside in sub-Saharan Africa. Namibia has one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates. This study examined the association between social support, spirituality and depressive symptoms. Method and results: The sample consisted of 147 Oshiwambo-speaking older adults (mean age = 61 years, SD = 6.92 years) with HIV in Namibia. By utilising a hierarchical multivariate regression method, this study found that social support from friends and spirituality showed a significant negative relationship to depressive symptoms. In addition, self-rated health status and alcohol use were significant sociodemographic predicitive factors of depressive symptoms. Conclusion: This study suggests the need to develop interventions and support programmes that incorporate peer support and spiritual practice to promote health and well-being among older persons living with HIV in Namibia.

This study questioned whether rheological properties can predict drug (metronidazole) release from Hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) platforms. Viscometric and viscoelastic properties of aqueous, alcohols/diols and mixed solvent HPC solutions and gels were determined using viscometry and oscillatory analysis. Drug release was conducted at pH 7.4 under sink conditions. Relationships between rheological parameters and drug release were modelled using multiple linear stepwise regression. Viscometry identified ethanol and water as good solvents for HPC. Diol solvents were predicted to exhibit greater interactions with HPC (COSMO modelling) but possessed lowest intrinsic viscosities. Pentanediol or ethylene glycol prepared gels exhibited greatest elasticity. No relationships were observed between dilute solution properties and initial gel viscoelasticity. Drug release from HPC gels occurred via gel erosion and diffusion. No relationships were observed between initial gel viscoelasticity and drug release and thus, for gel platforms that undergo erosion in aqueous media, drug release cannot be predicted from initial gel viscoelasticity.

Electrospun poly (vinyl alcohol) nanofibers incorporating caffeic acid/cyclodextrins through the supramolecular assembly for antibacterial activity

Here, we prepared the solid inclusion complexes between Caffeic acid (CA) and Cyclodextrins (beta- and gamma-CDs) (CA/CDs) that were effectively embedded into Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) electrospun nanofibers via electrospinning technique to enhanced solubility and antibacterial activity. In tested Cyclodextrins are beta and gamma-CDs with CA in the ratio of 1:1 resulting in the formation of CA/CDs by co-precipitation method. The physical properties of CA/CDs were examined by FT-IR, UV, and Raman Spectroscopy. The phase solubility test showed a much higher solubility of CA due to inclusion complexes (ICs). Furthermore, CA/beta-CD and CA/gamma-CD perfected achieved 0.70:1 and 0.80:1 the molar ratio of ICs, confirmed by NMR studies. The fiber size distribution, average diameter, and morphology features were evaluated by SEM analysis. The dissolution profile of PVA/CA and PVA/CA/CDs were tested within 150 min, resulting in CA dissolved in PVA/CA/CDs slightly higher than PVA/CA nanofibers due to enhanced solubility of ICs. Moreover, PVA/CA/CDs exhibit high antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria of E-Coli and gram-negative bacteria of S. aureus. Quantitative determination of volatile compounds using TD-GC-MS and isotope standard addition for application to the heat treatment of food

For many foods that undergo thermal treatment, the generation of numerous process-induced compounds has strong implications for food quality and safety. Today, increasing attention is payed to the generation and occurrence of particular classes of newly formed compounds in processed foods for their potential health implication. It is therefore of the utmost importance to monitor the process with fit-for-purpose methods that are appropriate for use in quality control or in research and innovation. Since many quality-related compounds are volatile, there is a need for robust methods that can quantify a broad range of volatile markers and are applicable to on-line monitoring. To meet this need, an original and reliable method based on thermal desorption has been developed for the quantification of volatile compounds sampled on-line by sorbent tubes. For the first time, this method combines in-tube calibration and deuterated standard addition. Ten volatile compounds that are likely to form during heat processing of food (i.e. baking of cereal products), were chosen as target analytes for their relevance to food quality and their different physicochemical properties: 3-methylbutanal, pyrazine, 2-methylpyrazine, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 2,6-dimethylpyrazine, acetic acid, furfural, 5-methylfurfural, furfuryl alcohol and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The key steps in the analytical procedure were optimized and carefully characterized in terms of recovery, repeatability and reliability. The TD-GC-MS method displayed good linearity over extended ranges for all compounds (R-2: 0.9950 to 0.8880) with low limits of quantification (LOQs) ranging from 0.0141 to 11.5 ng. The matrix effect was negligible for most compounds, except for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (21.5%), the most polar and least volatile compound. The method was applied to determining process-induced compounds generated during the baking of a model cake and sampled from baking vapors at three different times during the heat treatment. Of all the compounds extracted, the target analytes exhibited concentrations spread over very broad ranges. This highly sensitive method could therefore be used for the early quantification of relevant markers during the processing of food matrices, for quality or mitigation purposes. Quantitative TD-GC-MS with in-tube calibration and isotope standard addition is particularly well-suited for applications where an accurate determination is required of both trace level and major volatile compounds over time. This method may therefore be relevant for monitoring either industrial or domestic food processes (e.g. baking, frying, roasting), for multi-residue analyses linked to quality and safety, or reaction kinetics for multi-response modeling. It can also be transferable to emerging non-food applications.

An experimental assessment on low temperature combustion using diesel/ biodiesel/C2, C5 alcohol blends in a diesel engine

Alcohol additives in Diesel-Biodiesel (DB) blends were investigated on a modified single cylinder diesel engine with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The effects of lower and higher alcohol contents (10% ethanol, 20% ethanol and 10% pentanol by volume) with various EGR rates on combustion characteristics and emissions were evaluated. The results indicated that with the increase of EGR rates and increasing fraction of ethanol in DB blends, the ratio of premixed combustion will increase and the ignition delay (ID) will prolong, which lead to the increase of maximum pressure rise rate and peak value of heat release rate. Indicated thermal efficiency (ITE) increased firstly with EGR increasing and then decreased rapidly, but the EGR rates corresponding to the rapid decrease of ITE for the blends will be low compared to pure diesel. The Diesel-Biodiesel-Ethanol (DBE, the lower alcohol) blends showed the best performance on soot emissions among all the tested fuels even though there is no EGR. What’s more, the DBE blends showed better nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions at high EGR. However, the Diesel-Biodiesel-Pentanol (DBP, the higher alcohol) blends performed better THC emissions. Overall consideration, using diesel/biodiesel/ethanol ternary fuels under medium EGR rates may be a better choice for diesel engines.
