Long-term effectiveness of the alcohol ignition interlock programme: A retrospective cohort study in the Netherlands

This article provides an evaluation of the long-term effectiveness of the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Programme (AIIP) on recidivism. A retrospective cohort design was used to compare the known reoffending behaviour of 1676 AIIP participants with that of 907 persons in a control group, consisting of offenders who committed an AIIP-worthy driving-under-the-influence (DUI) offence that was not reported to the Dutch driving license authority. Persons in the control group were not sanctioned with an AIIP, but had their case settled in the criminal court. Our outcome measure was the percentage of offenders who committed at least one new DUI offence within the follow-up period. Results indicate that the percentage of repeat offenders in the AIIP group was lower than in the control group. Additional analyses indicate that were an AIIP to be imposed alongside a criminal settlement, a recidivism reduction of 4 percentage points (4 % versus 8 %) could be expected. This would translate to a relative decrease of 54 %. Explanations for these findings are discussed.

Balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. In my other articles, you can also check out more blogs about 1611-56-9. Category: alcohols-buliding-blocks.

The role of family conflict in mediating impulsivity to early substance exposure among preteens

Objectives: Preadolescence substance exposure, which increases the risk of regular substance use, has been a public health concern. Although studies found that impulsivity is a predisposing factor of early substance exposure, the pathways through which impulsivity is associated with early substance exposure remain unclear. This study examined how family conflict mediates this association among U.S. preteens as family environment plays an essential role in pre-adolescent development. Methods: Respondents (N = 11,800, 9-10 years old) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study Release 2.01 (July 2019) were included in this study. Generalized structural equation modeling was performed to investigate the mediation effects of family conflict on the associations between childhood impulsivity and early exposure to alcohol and tobacco use, controlling for covariates based on the Problem Behavior Theory. Results: Pre-adolescents with high impulsivity levels (>= 90th percentile) were more likely to report early alcohol and tobacco exposure (total effect: ORs = 1.49 and 1.70, respectively), where 4.13% and 12.41% of the associations, respectively, were meditated by family conflict (indirect effect: ORs = 1.02 and 1.07; Sobel test ps = 0.022 and 0.005, respectively). Conclusions: Family conflict mediates the associations between childhood impulsivity and early substance exposure among preteens, with higher impulsivity leading to more severe family conflicts that are, in turn, associated with a higher likelihood of early substance exposure. To prevent preteens with high impulsivity level from early use of substances, interventions may focus on reducing family conflicts such as parenting counseling that guides parents to strengthen conflict-resolution skills and create a stable home environment for preteens.

Effects of chemogenetic manipulation of the nucleus accumbens core in male C57BL/6J mice

Binge drinking is a widespread public health concern with limited effective treatment options. To better select pharmaceutical targets, it is imperative to expand our knowledge of the underlying neural mechanisms involved in binge drinking. Our previous experiments in C57BL/6J female mice found that increasing activity in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) core using excitatory Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs) reduced binge-like drinking. These results differed from what has been found in males; however, it is unclear whether differences in experimental procedures or sex underlie these discrepancies. We matched the conditions used in our female study and asked whether bidirectional manipulation of NAc core activity has different effects on binge-like drinking in males. Male C57BL/6J mice were stereotaxically injected with AAV2 hSyn-HA hM3Dq (excitatory), -hM4Di (inhibitory), or -eGFP bilaterally into the NAc core. We tested the effects of altering NAc activity on binge-like ethanol intake using Drinking in the Dark (DID). During the first week, mice were pre-treated with vehicle to establish baseline ethanol intake. In week 2, mice were treated with 1 mg/kg CNO prior to DID to determine the effects of DREADD-induced changes in NAc core activity on ethanol intake. Decreasing activity via CNO/hM4Di significantly decreased binge-like drinking in male mice relative to eGFP and hM4Di groups. We also measured intake of sucrose, quinine, and water after CNO treatment and found that increasing NAc core activity via CNO/hM3Dq increased quinine intake, and increased water intake over time. We did not observe significant differences in the GFP or hM4Di groups. This work suggests there exist apparent sex-related differences in NAc core contributions to binge-like alcohol drinking, thus demonstrating the need for inclusion of both sexes in future work. Photoactive amphiphilic nanoreactor: A chloroplast-like catalyst for natural oxidation of alcohols

Exploring catalytic processes performed under natural conditions is interesting, but there remains a great challenge in developing highly efficient catalysts for natural oxidation of alcohols. Herein, we report a chloroplast-like catalyst comprised of photoactive carbon dots (CDs), catalytically active Pt nanoparticles, and amphiphilic nanotubes. Under simulated and real natural reaction conditions, our catalysts exhibited remarkable activity and long-term reusability for the oxidation of various alcohols, significantly outperforming that of other counterpart catalysts and reported thermal/photocatalytic systems. It was demonstrated that when the carbon dots and the amphiphilic nanotubes respectively played a role in the light-harvesting and the substrate transport the Pt/CDs heterointerface acted as the active center for the matter conversion. Such an elaborate cooperation, an advanced process in the photosynthesis of plant, contributed to the excellent catalytic performance. This contribution provides a new design concept for artificial photocatalysts, which is very promising for developing sustainable catalytic processes.

A gender comparative analysis of post-traumatic stress disorder among a community-based cohort of people who use drugs in Vancouver, Canada

Background: While exposure to traumatic events and subsequent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common among people who use drugs (PWUD), little is known about gender-based differences associated with PTSD in this population. We explore gender-based differences in factors associated with a probable PTSD diagnosis in a cohort of PWUD from Vancouver, Canada. Methods: Data were collected through the Vancouver Injection Drug Users Study (VIDUS) and the AIDS Care Cohort to Evaluate Exposure to Survival Services (ACCESS), two community-recruited cohorts of PWUD. Participants were administered the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. Multivariable logistic regression was used to investigate social-structural factors and substance use patterns and behaviours associated with a probable PTSD diagnosis, stratified by self-identified gender. PTSD symptom clusters and brief descriptions of the worst traumatic event experienced were also reported. Results: Between December 2016 and December 2018, of 797 eligible participants, 295 (37.0%) identified as women. PTSD was more commonly reported in women compared to men (53.2% vs. 31.5%, p < 0.001). In multivariable analysis involving men, no correlates were associated with PTSD. In multivariable analysis involving women, PTSD was positively associated with exposure to violence (AOR: 3.66; 95%CI: 1.14-11.72), daily stimulant use (AOR: 2.32; 95%CI: 1.32-4.08) and heavy alcohol use (AOR: 3.84; 95%CI: 1.84-8.00), and negatively associated with being in a stable relationship (AOR: 0.46; 95%CI: 0.25-0.84). Conclusions: Gender-based differences in PTSD diagnosis among a cohort of PWUD point to the need to develop gender-focused and trauma-informed health and social services to meet the immediate needs of PWUD living with PTSD. Determination and utilization of optimal diesel/n-butanol/biogas derivation for small utility dual fuel diesel engine

Aggregating pollution along with exhausting fossil fuels throughout the world has enforced the inventors to explore for an alternative fuel that can be utilized in diesel engines. Presently, investigators and professionals have originated that biodiesel in association with higher alcohols and gaseous fuel can be an alternative for the current circumstances. Anterior examinations have rendered that biodiesel and higher alcohol along with gaseous fuels can support in upgrading the performance and denigrating detrimental exhaust emanations in a diesel engine. This research aimed to investigate the impacts of engine load, n-butanol concentration, and biogas quantity on emissions and performance characteristics of a small utility compression ignition engine. The different engine load (20-100% of brake power), n-butanol concentration (0-20%) and biogas flow rate (0.5-2 kg/h) were used as input variables. The multi-criteria decision analysis based on response surface method techniques was employed to find the optimal values of engine working conditions fuelled with diesel/n-butanol/biogas fuel blends. In the optimization process, five objective functions (BTE, NOX, CO, UHC, and soot) were considered to be optimized based on the defined criteria. The addition of n-butanol in diesel has shown a favourable impact on biogas operated dual-fuel engine in terms of performance and emissions characteristics. The approach of desirability was applied to obtain the best operating conditions of the engine. The optimum value of engine load, n-butanol concentration, and biogas flow rate were found as 78.89%, 20%, and 1.37 kg/h, respectively. At this condition, the optimal value of BTE, UHC, CO, NOX, and smoke emissions were found to be 19.19%, 0.36g/kWh, 0.04%, 14.51g/kWh, and 22.32%, respectively. A high desirability value of 0.77 was obtained for the suggested condition, showing the efficiency of the derived models for response parameters.

Au-Pd nanoparticles immobilized on TiO2 nanosheet as an active and durable catalyst for solvent-free selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol

TiO2 nanocrystals with controlled facets have been extensively investigated due to their excellent photocatalytic performance in sustainable and green energy field. However, the applications in thermal catalysis without applying UV irradiation are comparably less and the identification of their intrinsic roles, especially the different catalytic behaviors of each crystal facet, remains not fully recognized. In this study, bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles supported on anatase TiO2 nanosheets exposing {001} facets or TiO2 nanospindles exposing {101} as a catalyst were prepared by sol-immobilization method and used for solvent-free benzyl alcohol oxidation. The experimental results indicated that the exposed facet of the support has a significant effect on the catalytic performance. AuPd/TiO2-001 catalyst exhibited a higher benzyl alcohol conversion than that of the AuPd/TiO2-101. Meanwhile, all the prepared AuPd/TiO2 catalysts were characterized by XRD, ICP-AES, XPS, BET, TEM, and HRTEM. The results revealed that the higher number of oxygen vacancies in TiO2 -sheets with the exposed {001} facets of higher surface energy could be responsible for the observed enhancement in the catalytic performance of benzyl alcohol oxidation. The present study displays that it is plausible to enhance the catalytic performance for the benzyl alcohol oxidation by tailoring the exposed facet of the TiO2 as a catalyst support. Enhanced biodiesel production from oleic acid using TiO2-decorated magnetic ZIF-8 nanocomposite catalyst and its utilization for used frying oil conversion to valuable product

In this study, a new recyclable TiO2-decorated magnetic ZIF-8 (Fe3O4@ZIF-8/TiO2) nanocomposite catalyst was first synthesized and its structural and morphological properties were characterized through different techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, TEM, EDX, TPD, and VSM. Then, biodiesel was produced using the Fe3O4@ZIF-8/TiO2 catalyst through the esterification of oleic acid in the presence of ethanol. Response surface methodology (RSM) was also employed to achieve the optimum experimental operating variables affecting the yield of biodiesel production. Significant variables like the amount of catalyst, the molar ratio of alcohol to fatty acid, reaction time, and temperature were optimized through RSM to achieve the highest yield of biodeisel production. The results indicated that the highest biodiesel yield is obtained at the reaction temperature of 50 degrees C, the reaction time of 62.5 min, the alcohol to oleic acid molar ratio 30:1, and 0.2 g (6 %wt) amount of catalyst. In this condition, the highest yield of biodiesel production was found 80% and 93% using ethanol and methanol, respectively; around 40% higher than pristine TiO2 and magnetic ZIF-8. Subsequently, the biodiesel production in optimum conditions was evaluated from frying oil by using the as-prepared catalyst. The result from H-1 NMR and GC-MS analyses confirmed the efficient conversion of frying oil wastes to valuable biofuel product.

Fischer-Tropsch reaction within zeolite crystals for selective formation of gasoline-ranged hydrocarbons

Product selectivity control is attractive in Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis but it is still a challenge, because the F-T products follow the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distribution with maximized gasoline-ranged (C-5-C-11) hydrocarbon selectivity at 45%. Herein, we report a strategy by optimizing the gasoline selectivity to outperform the ASF limitation. The key to this success is fixation of the metal nanoparticles within zeolite crystals (metal@zeolite), where the zeolite micropore adjusts the product selectivity. For example, the Ru@NaY exhibited the gasoline selectivity 64.3% in the F-T reaction, which is significantly higher than the ASF limitation and about 2 times of that (32.8%) over conventionally supported Ru catalyst (Ru/NaY). This investigation might offer an alternative route for the direct transformation of syngas to liquid fuels with controllable selectivities.
