AimThis study aimed to examine if there is an interaction between alcohol use and human development in terms of their associations with alcohol-attributable health harms. Statistical analyses indicated there is an interaction between HDI and APC in their associations with alcohol-attributable deaths, YLL and DALYs lost per 100000 people. The alcohol-attributable burden was highest in low HDI countries, with 11.65 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 10.75, 12.40] deaths and 495.61 (95% CI = 461.83, 569.23) DALYs lost per 100000 people per litre of APC, and lowest in very high HDI countries, with 4.15 (95% CI = 2.46, 5.71) deaths and 200.31 (95% CI = 122.78, 265.10) DALYs lost per 100000 people per litre of APC. However, no statistical differences between low and very high HDI groupings for these burdens were observed. Modified Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised: Psychometric Validation in a Psychiatric Sample of Young Adults with Predominantly Polysubstance Use

Introduction: Measures of motives for alcohol use provide an important avenue for understanding underlying psychological reasons that drive substance use and predict distinct patterns of use. The Modified Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised (MDMQ-R; Grant, Stewart, O’Connor, Blackwell, Conrod, 2007) measures five drinking motives: social, enhancement, conformity, coping-with-anxiety, and coping-with-depression. The MDMQ-R and its predecessors have previously been validated only in non-clinical normative samples. Purpose: Therefore, the present study aimed to validate the factor structure and internal consistency of the MDMQ-R in a diverse psychiatric sample of substance-using young adults that presented with either exclusive alcohol use or polysubstance use. Method: Participants were 255 substance-using young adults (18-26 years; M = 21.17) admitted to the young adult partial hospitalization treatment program at a private psychiatric hospital (62% female; 78% White; 43% students). Results: A confirmatory factor analysis revealed that items loaded on their respective latent factors (ps < 0.01; loadings between 0.50 and 0.90; reliabilities between 0.80 and 0.94). However, goodness of fit statistics were not reflective of model fit found in Grant et al. (2007) in the overall sample, as well as in alcohol-only and polysubstance-using samples. Discussion: Results suggest that the factor structure of the MDMQ-R did not replicate in the present sample. Intimate Partner Violence Among Surgeons: We are Not Immune

Objective: The incidence and risk factors for IPV are not well-studied among surgeons. We sought to fill this gap in knowledge by surveying surgeons to estimate the incidence and identify risk factors associated with IPV. Summary of Background Data: An estimated 36.4% of women and 33.6% of men in the United States have experienced IPV. Risk factors include low SES, non-White ethnicity, psychiatric disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, and history of childhood abuse. Families with higher SES are not exempt from IPV, yet there is very little data examining incidence and risk factors among these populations. Methods: An anonymous online survey targeting US-based surgeons was distributed through 4 major surgical societies. Demographics, history of abuse, and related factors were assessed. Chi-square analysis and multivariable logistic regression were utilized to evaluate for potential risk factors of IPV. Results: Eight hundred eighty-two practicing surgeons and trainees completed the survey, of whom 536 (61%) reported experiencing some form of behavior consistent with IPV. The majority of respondents were women (74.1%, P = 0.004). Emotional abuse was most common (57.3%), followed by controlling behavior (35.6%), physical abuse (13.1%), and sexual abuse (9.6%). History of mental illness, [odds ratio (OR) 2.32, P < 0.001], alcohol use (frequent/daily OR 1.76, P = 0.035 and occasional OR 1.78, P = 0.015), childhood physical abuse (OR 1.96, P = 0.020), childhood emotional abuse (OR 1.76, P = 0.008), and female sex (OR 1.46, P = 0.022) were associated with IPV. The BET analysis of the MnFe2O4 nanoparticles revealed the mesoporous distribution of material with high surface area can provide large electro active sites and short diffusion paths for the transport of ions which plays a vital role in the photocatalytic degradation of CR. The point of zero charge (pHPZC) was observed to be 6.7 indicating favourable condition for materialanionic dye interaction. The XPS studies revealed that the large amounts of oxygen vacancies were produced due to the defects in the lattice oxygen. The MnFe2O4 nanoparticlesmineralised 98.3 +/- 0.2% of 50mg/L CRwithin 30 min when tested in photocatalytic reactor under 565 nm. The particles were recoverable under the influence of an external magnet after the photocatalytic reaction and were reusable. The recovered nanoparticles showed 96% of CR degradation efficiency even after five cycles of reuse. The by-product analysis with GC-MS indicated mineralization of CR into simple alcohols and acids. The aqueous solution containing mineralised CR was nontoxic to Trigonella foenumgraecum and Vignamungo seeds and favoured increased germination, plumule and radicle length when compared to untreated CR. Gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux disease are strongly associated with non-allergic nasal disorders

Background Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been reported to be significantly associated with chronic rhinosinusitis, but the strength of the association is still debated. Aims To evaluate the strength of the association between gastritis/GERD and non-allergic rhinitis (NAR)/allergic rhinitis (AR)/sinusitis. Methods We investigated 2887 subjects aged 20-84 years, who underwent a clinical visit in seven Italian centres (Ancona, Palermo, Pavia, Terni, Sassari, Torino, Verona) within the study on Gene Environment Interactions in Respiratory Diseases, a population-based multicase-control study between 2008 and 2014. Subjects were asked if they had doctor-diagnosed gastritis or stomach ulcer (confirmed by gastroscopy) or gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernia or esophagitis. The association between NAR/AR/sinusitis and either gastritis or GERD was evaluated through relative risk ratios (RRR) by multinomial logistic regression. Results The prevalence of gastritis/GERD increased from subjects without nasal disturbances (22.8% = 323/1414) to subjects with AR (25.8% = 152/590) and further to subjects with NAR (36.7% = 69/188) or sinusitis (39.9% = 276/691). When adjusting for centre, sex, age, education level, BMI, smoking habits and alcohol intake, the combination of gastritis and GERD was associated with a four-fold increase in the risk of NAR (RRR = 3.80, 95% CI 2.56-5.62) and sinusitis (RRR = 3.70, 2.62-5.23) with respect to controls, and with a much smaller increase in the risk of AR (RRR = 1.79, 1.37-2.35).. Conclusion The study confirmed the association between gastritis/GERD and nasal disturbances, which is stronger for NAR and sinusitis than for AR.

3D nanoflower-like layered double hydroxide modified quaternized chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol composite anion conductive membranes for fuel cells

To solve the trade-off problem among ionic conductivity, mechanical and chemical stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs), quaternized chitosan (QCS) was first prepared and then was blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to improve mechanical strength of QCS. Afterwards, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical flower-like layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were prepared via one-pot ethylene glycol-assisted solvothermal method, and then were incorporated into QCS/PVA blend matrix to fabricate composite AEMs. By constructing 3D hierarchical structure, the active sites of LDH nanosheets are fully exposed, thus impressive ion conductivity, alkali and fuel resistant ability of LDH nanosheets can be rationally utilized. The composite membrane displayed the maximum OH- conductivity of 25.7 mS cm(-1), which was 48.6 % higher than that of the pristine membrane. Alkaline stability measurement proved that the composite membranes kept residual ionic conductivity of as high as 92 % after immersion in a 2 M KOH for 100 h. Due to the decreased methanol permeability and increased conductivity, the composite membrane with 6% LDHs content exhibited a peak power density of 73 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C, whereas the pristine membrane demonstrated only 40 mW cm(-2).

Towards aromatics from biomass: Prospective Life Cycle Assessment of bio-based aniline

Bio-based chemicals are seen as a potential stepping-stone towards a more sustainable chemical industry. However, while bio-based routes are already available for various organic alcohols and acids, the direct bio-based production of aromatic compounds has been difficult so far. Recently, the first bio-based process for the production of the important aromatic aniline has been realized. The process produces bio-based aniline via two-stages: first, sugar is fermented by Corynebacterium Glutamicum to aminobenzoic acid, which is then catalytically decarboxylated to aniline. In this study, we present a prospective Life Cycle Assessment for bio-based aniline production to evaluate the environmental potential compared to fossil-based aniline production. Our results suggest that the bio-based production could reduce the global warming impacts of aniline from cradle-to-grave by 35e69% relative to fossil-based production, depending on the type of biomass feedstock. However, bio-based aniline could also substantially increase eutrophication and acidification, a trade-off commonly observed for bio-based processes. Optical and conductivity studies of polyvinyl alcohol-MXene (PVA-MXene) nanocomposite thin films for electronic applications

A new family of 2D materials known as MXenes (Ti3C2Tx) is combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form nanocomposites thin film with a thickness in micrometre range (7.20-7.88 mu m) by using a relatively simple way, a drop-casting technique. The multi-layered structure of the MXenes bound together with PVA results in a high degree of structural disorder due to increasing defects in the nanocomposites. Detailed optical studies include UV-Vis absorption, optical absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient, and band gap energy determinations are conducted to investigate electromagnetic wave absorption capability of the nanocomposites. Resistivity measurement is studied as well. Electrical conductivity of the PVA is significantly increased with at least an improvement of 3000 times as compared to pure PVA (1 x 10(-13) Sm-1). The highest a value of 7.25 x 10(-3) Sm-1 is found in the nanocomposites with a mass ratio of PVA to MXenes, 80:20 with its calculated optical absorption coefficient value in range 4000-5000 cm(-1). The optical findings, as well as the electrical conductivity enhancement exhibited by these nanocomposites, explore the route to apply MXenes in polymer-based multifunctional nanocomposites for various applications such as optoelectronics, conductive filler, and electromagnetic absorbers.

Synthesis of water-soluble fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) from nanosecond pulsed laser ablation in ethanol

Traditionally, CNPs directly obtained from nanosecond pulsed laser ablation (ns-PLA) in an organic solvent like ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and acetone, possess toxic characteristics with excellent fluorescent properties. However, water-soluble CNPs are found to be non-toxic with weak fluorescent properties. In this study, a post ablation method was utilized to achieve water-soluble fluorescent CNPs. Initially, the colloidal Eth-CNPs solution was obtained from ns-PLA of charcoal powder in the ethanol, which was subsequently dried at room temperature and then dispersed in water to achieve the final water-soluble CNPs (W-CNPs). The High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) image analysis of W-CNPs shows quasi-spherical size particle distribution with an average particle size found to be around 21 nm. XPS studies of charcoal powder and W-CNPs confirm the creation of fluorescent emissive defects state on the surface of W-CNPs under laser ablation in ethanol. Photoluminescence studies of W-CNPs demonstrated the wavelength-dependent PL emission, with peak PL emission in the blue region of the visible spectrum. In vitro studies indicated the non-toxic nature of the W-CNPs at low and high concentration (1, 5 and 10% v/v) in human cardiomyocytes. Herein, the W-CNPs obtained from post-ns-PLA was found to exhibit both blue and green fluorescence in the cardiomyocytes and hence, it can be exploited as a fluoro probe in bioimaging applications.

Predictors of substance use in a clinical sample of youth seeking treatment for Trauma-related mental health problems

Child maltreatment and traumatic events are well established risk factors for adolescent substance use problems, but little is known about the unique contributions of etiological factors on trauma-exposed youths’ pre-treatment substance use in clinical settings. This study examined associations between substance use and risk and protective factors measured across multiple ecological levels among a unique sample of youth seeking treatment for trauma-related mental health problems in child advocacy centers. Participants were adolescents (N = 135; 85% female; 60% white, 31% black) aged 13-17 years (M = 15.4) with >= 1 experience of child maltreatment or other interpersonal violence, current substance use, and >= 5 PTSD symptoms. Youth and caregivers completed validated questionnaires and clinical interviews at a pre-treatment assessment in a randomized controlled trial of a treatment for co-occurring traumatic stress and substance use. Negative binomial regression models identified different patterns of risk and protective factors for alcohol and cannabis. Clinical implications of these results are discussed, including the potential targets for integrated psychotherapies that address co-occurring substance use and traumatic stress in youth.
