Fun/intoxication pre-drinking motives lead indirectly to more alcohol-related consequences via increased alcohol consumption on a given night

Introduction: Pre-drinking increases alcohol use on drinking nights, which is associated with various adverse alcohol-related consequences but what motivates people to do so, i.e. the role of pre-drinking motives (PDM) in this link, is unclear. The current study examined a) the association of three PDM factors (fun/intoxication, facilitation, and conviviality) with average night-level alcohol use, b) whether PDM are associated with adverse alcohol-related consequences (hangover, drunk driving, blackout, risky sex, injury, and fights) and c) whether PDM mediates the link between night-level alcohol use and negative consequences. Methods: A sample of 204 young adult nightlife goers (48.8% males, M age = 19 SD = 2.4) from Switzerland reported PDM at baseline, and subsequently participated in a 2-month event-level study. Regressions models assessed direct and mediated associations. Results: Fun/intoxication PDM predicted alcohol use in subsequent drinking nights (11.3 nights per participant on average), but not the two other PDM. No direct link between PDM and consequences was found. However, fun/intoxication PDM lead indirectly to more adverse consequences through higher alcohol use. Conclusion: This study shows that predominantly ‘fun/intoxication’ predrinkers are at increased risk for alcohol consumption and consequences, but not those who predrink for conviviality or facilitation motives. The outcomes thus suggest the importance of specific PDM in preventing alcohol use for instance by tailoring interventions based on individuals’ PDM in order to curb drinking and its associated consequences among young adults on weekend nights out.

Deciphering the succession patterns of bacterial community and their correlations with environmental factors and flavor compounds during the fermentation of Zhejiang rosy vinegar

Zhejiang Rosy Vinegar (ZRV) is a traditional condiment in Southeast China, produced using semi-solid-state fermentation techniques under an open environment, yet little is known about the functional microbiota involved in the flavor formation of ZRV. In this study, 43 kinds of volatile flavor substances were identified by HS-SPME/GC-MS, mainly including ethyl acetate (relative content at the end of fermentation: 1104.1 mg/L), phenylethyl alcohol (417.6 mg/L) and acetoin (605.2 mg/L). The most abundant organic acid was acetic acid (59.6 g/L), which kept rising during the fermentation, followed by lactic acid (7.0 g/L), which showed a continuously downward trend. Amplicon sequencing analysis revealed that the richness and diversity of bacterial community were the highest at the beginning and then maintained decreasing during the fermentation. The predominant bacteria were scattered in Acetobacter (average relative abundance: 63.7%) and Lactobacillus (19.8%). Both sequencing and culture-dependent analysis showed Lactobacillus dominated the early stage (day 10 to 30), and Acetobacter kept highly abundant from day 40 to the end. Spearman correlation analysis displayed that the potential major groups involved in the formation of flavor compounds were Acetobacter and Lactobacillus, which were also showed strong relationships with other bacteria through co-occurrence network analysis (edges attached to Acetobacter: 61.7%; Lactobacillus: 14.0%). Moreover, structural equation model showed that the contents of ethanol, titratable acid and reducing sugar were the major environmental factors playing essential roles in influencing the succession of bacterial community and their metabolism during the fermentation. Overall, these findings illuminated the dynamic profiles of bacterial community and flavor compounds and the potential functional microbes, which were expected to help us understand the formation of flavor substances in ZRV.

High-performance and stable Ru-Pd nanosphere catalyst supported on two-dimensional boron nitride nanosheets for the hydrogenation of furfural via water-mediated protonation

Bimetallic Ru-Pd catalysts are increasingly being investigated for applications in the upgrading of bio-oils to biofuels, owing to their high catalytic activities. Similarly, the recent development of Ru-Pd alloyed nanoparticle (NP) incorporated into hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) catalysts that can be utilized for tuning the selectivity of desired products has also received considerable attention. In the present study, nanoclusters of Ru-0-Pd-0 that self-assemble into spherical-like Ru-Pd bimetallic catalytic sites were successfully grown on the surfaces of BN nanosheets (Ru-Pd/BN NCs) via microwave irradiation for 30 s. HR-TEM investigations revealed the formation of 25 nm sized Ru-Pd nanoparticles comprising <= 2 nm hexagonal closed-pack (hcp) Ru-Pd clusters with Ru crystallites on the BN nanosheets. Further, furfural was effectively converted into furfural alcohol at a lower temperature (150 degrees C) and valuable cyclopentanone was obtained at a higher temperature (>250 degrees C) over the RuPd/BN catalyst through the protonation of water molecules. Furthermore, various solvents namely 2-propanol, toluene, and cyclohexane were also used to achieve the production of furan and tetrahydrofuran over the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst via the decarbonylation of furfural under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, for real-time upgrading, furfural-rich bio-oil produced by the pyrolysis of date-tree biomass was processed over the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst to obtain a maximum of 97% furfural conversion with a 71% FFA yield at 150 degrees C. The stability and reusability of the catalyst were also determined. The results demonstrated that the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst is highly active and chemically stable, and is therefore suitable for industrial applications.

Self-Immolative RAFT-Polymer End Group Modification

Reversible modifications of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-polymerization derived end groups are usually limited to reductive degradable disulfide conjugates. However, self-immolative linkers can promote ligation and traceless release of primary and secondary amines as well as alcohols via carbonates or carbamates in beta-position to disulfides. In this study, these two strategies are combined and the concept of self-immolative RAFT-polymer end group modifications is introduced: As model compounds, benzylamine, dibenzylamine, and benzyl alcohol are first attached as carbamates or carbonates to a symmetrical disulfide, and in a straightforward one-pot reaction these groups are reversibly attached to aminolyzed trithiocarbonate end groups of RAFT-polymerized poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide). Quantitative end group modification is confirmed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and mass spectrometry, while reversible release of attached compounds under physiological reductive conditions is successfully monitored by diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy and thin layer chromatography. Additionally, this concept is further expanded to protein-reactive, self-immolative carbonate species that enable reversible bioconjugation of lysozyme and alpha-macrophage mannose receptor (MMR) nanobodies as model proteins. Altogether, self-immolative RAFT end group modifications can form the new basis for reversible introduction of various functionalities to polymer chain ends including protein bioconjugates and, thus, opening novel opportunities for stimuli-responsive polymer hybrids.

The relationship between alcohol and cannabis use with nonsuicidal self-injury among adolescent inpatients: Examining the 90 days prior to psychiatric hospitalization

Background: This study examined the trajectories of alcohol use, cannabis use, suicide planning (SP), and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) prior to hospitalization and examined the role of alcohol and cannabis use, independently and jointly, in predicting NSSI on a daily level and over time. Methods: Participants included 71 adolescents hospitalized for suicide risk (75% female; 25% male; M-age = 15.79). All participants drank alcohol at least once in the prior 90-days. We conducted mixed effect models to assess the trajectories of alcohol use, cannabis use, and NSSI over the 90-days prior hospitalization. To test the effect of SP, alcohol use, and cannabis use on NSSI, we conducted logistic random effect models, while controlling for demographics. Results: SP (OR = 4.47, p < 0.001) and suicide ideation (SI) (OR = 10.09, p < 0.001) significantly increased the odds of engaging in NSSI. Neither cannabis nor alcohol use independently predicted the odds of engaging in NSSI, however, the co-occurrence of alcohol and cannabis use increased the odds of engaging in NSSI on a given day (OR = 30.5, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Study findings extend current knowledge about the longitudinal and day-to-day relationships between alcohol and cannabis use and NSSI. Results underscore the importance of developing interventions that address polysubstance use among suicidal adolescents engaging in NSSI. Effect of absorbed dose on starch:PVA films irradiated with gamma rays

The films characterized by starch:PVA weight ratio equal to 45:55 were obtained by solution casting and irradiated with Co-60 gamma rays in vacuum applying doses of 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75 kGy. The results have shown that irradiation with a dose of 5 kGy induces decrease in surface hydrophilicity shown by increase in contact angle to water with no special impact of using the higher doses. Tensile strength was not affected by irradiation performed with doses in all the range of 5-75 kGy, however using doses of 20 kGy or higher might result in decrease in the films’ flexibility. Decrease in capacity to swell in water accompanied by increase in solubility of the material was also observed after irradiation. A reduced gel content together with an increased solubility of the irradiated material have shown that degradation prevails over crosslinking under gamma irradiation. It can be concluded that radiation modification carried out with gamma rays using doses up to 10 kGy may find application in manufacturing better films in the starch:PVA system, and that using doses of 5 kGy is sufficiently effective for this purpose. Simultaneously, the starch:PVA (45:55) films turn out to be suitable for packing of food intended for radiation decontamination using doses up to 10 kGy.

Influence of Higher Alcohol Additives in Methanol-Gasoline Blends on the Performance and Emissions of an Unmodified Automotive SI Engine: A Review

More stringent emission norms are implemented all over the world to protect the environment from vehicular pollution. Biofuels are one of the best alternative solutions to reduce cost and environmental pollution. Among many alternate fuels, alcohol is a leading fuel used in automotive spark-ignition engines in pure or blended form. The capability of methanol to substitute gasoline has been known for a long time. This paper aims to systematically review methanol-gasoline blend with higher alcohol additives (ternary blends) as a transportation fuel in unmodified automotive spark-ignition engines. This review summarizes the previous research in methanol-gasoline blends with and without additives on spark-ignition engines’ performance and emission characteristics. Many researchers found that methanol-gasoline blended fuels improve engine performance and emissions. Generally, alcohols burn very effectively and produce only fewer emissions compared to gasoline. Still, lower alcohol may cause some problems such as increased specific fuel consumption, phase separation and corrosion. These problems are further optimized using higher alcohol additives through improved energy content, kinematic viscosity, corrosion resistance, water tolerance and phase stability. Several research studies have been carried out in the past years, which focused mainly on single alcohol blended fuels for spark-ignition engines. Thus, a comprehensive survey of performance, combustion and emission characteristics of methanol-gasoline blended fuel with higher alcohol additives is necessary to show the potential of ternary blends in automotive engines.

Emotion regulation and experiential avoidance moderate the association between posttraumatic symptoms and alcohol use disorder among Israeli combat veterans

Introduction: the association between Posttraumatic Stress symptoms (PTSS) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) among combat veterans is well established. However, little is known concerning the intertwining effect of distress oriented coping mechanisms on this association. In this study, we sought to explore the moderating role of experiential avoidance (EA), cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES) on the association between PTSS and AUD among Israeli combat veterans. Method: Participants were 189 Israel Defense Forces (IDF) male combat veterans (mean age = 30.03) who completed a set of validated self-report questionnaires assessing PTSS, AUD, EA, CR and ES. Moderation analyses were conducted using a four-step hierarchical regression analysis and an ordinary least squares regression analysis. Results: Analyses indicated that individuals with average or high levels of EA or ES exhibited significant positive association between PTSS and AUD, yet those with low levels of EA or ES exhibited no significant association between PTSS and AUD (b = 0.14,Confidence Interval (CI)[0.06, 0.22, SE = 0.04, t = 3.65, p = .000, 95%] for EA and b = 0.17, CI[0.07, 0.25, SE = 0.04, t = 3.69, p = .000, 95%] for ES). In addition, CR moderated the association between PTSS and AUD (b = 0.18, CI[0.07, 0.29, SE = 0.06, t = 3.24, p = .001, 95%]), so that the association between PTSS and AUD is positive and stronger for higher levels of CR. Conclusions: Our findings imply that EA, ES and CR and emotion regulation may be major facilitators of the association between PTSS and AUD among combat veterans. These findings are discussed in the Israeli context as well as in light of a general psychological perspective.

The burden of non-communicable diseases and mortality in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the pre-, early- and late-HAART era

Objectives To estimate the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mortality among PLHIV in the pre-, early- and late-HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) era. Methods We conducted a cohort study using population-based Danish medical registries including all adult HIV-infected residents of the Central Denmark Region during 1985-2017. For each HIV patient, we selected 10 comparisons from the background population matched by age, sex and municipality of residence. Based on hospital-related diagnoses we estimated the prevalence and incidence of specific NCD at diagnosis and at 5 and 10 years. Results We identified 1043 PLHIV and 10 430 matched comparisons. PLHIV had lower socioeconomic status and more were born outside western Europe. At HIV diagnosis, 21.9% of PHLIV vs. 18.2% of non-HIV individuals had at least one NCD, increasing to 42.2% vs. 25.9% after 10 years. PLHIV had higher prevalence and cumulative incidence of alcohol abuse, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ischaemic heart disease, mental disorders, renal and liver disease, but no increased risk of diabetes mellitus. Only PLHIV in the age groups 41-50 and > 51 years had an increased incidence of osteoporosis. From the pre- to the late-HAART era, 10-year mortality among PLHIV decreased from 45.5% to 9.4% but continued at more than twice that of uninfected comparisons. However, in the late-HAART era, the mortality of PLHIV who were alive 2 years after HIV diagnosis was approaching that of comparisons. Conclusions Even in the late-HAART era, PLHIV have an excess mortality, which may be attributable to several NCDs being more prevalent among PLHIV. The prevalence rates of ischaemic heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and renal disease tend to increase over calendar time. Therefore, improvement of survival and quality of life of PLHIV neets strategies to reduce the risk of developing NCDs, including avoiding toxic antiretroviral therapy and lifestyle changes.

Effect of High-Dose Baclofen on Agitation-Related Events Among Patients With Unhealthy Alcohol Use Receiving Mechanical Ventilation A Randomized Clinical Trial

IMPORTANCE Unhealthy alcohol use can lead to agitation in the intensive care unit (ICU). OBJECTIVE To assess whether high-dose baclofen reduces agitation-related events compared with placebo in patients with unhealthy alcohol use receiving mechanical ventilation. DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS This phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial conducted in 18 ICUs in France recruited adults receiving mechanical ventilation who met criteria for unhealthy alcohol use. Patients were enrolled from June 2016 to February 2018; the last follow-up was in May 2019. INTERVENTIONS Baclofen (n = 159), adjusted from 50 to 150 mg per day based on estimated glomerular filtration rate, or placebo (n = 155) during mechanical ventilation up to a maximum of 15 days before gradual dose reduction over 3 to 6 days. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary end point was the percentage of patients with at least 1 agitation-related event over the treatment period. Secondary outcomes included duration of mechanical ventilation, length of ICU stay, and 28-day mortality. RESULTS Among 314 patients who were randomized (mean age, 57 years; 60 [17.2%] women), 313 (99.7%) completed the trial. There was a statistically significant decrease in the percentage of patients who experienced at least 1 agitation-related event in the baclofen group vs the placebo group (31 [19.7%] vs 46 [29.7%]; difference, -9.93%[95% CI, -19.45% to -0.42%]; adjusted odds ratio, 0.59 [95% CI, 0.35-0.99]). Of 18 prespecified secondary end points, 14 were not significantly different. Compared with the placebo group, the baclofen group had a significantly longer median length of mechanical ventilation (9 vs 8 days; difference, 2.00 [95% CI, 0.00-3.00]; hazard ratio [HR] for extubation, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.60-0.97]) and stay in the ICU (14 vs 11 days; difference, 2.00 [95% CI, 0.00-4.00]; HR for discharge, 0.70 [95% CI, 0.54-0.90]). At 28 days, there was no significant difference in mortality in the baclofen vs placebo group (25.3% vs 21.6%; adjusted odds ratio, 1.24 [95% CI, 0.72-2.13]). Delayed awakening (no eye opening at 72 hours after cessation of sedatives and analgesics) occurred in 14 patients (8.9%) in the baclofen group vs 3 (1.9%) in the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Among patients with unhealthy alcohol use receiving mechanical ventilation, treatment with high-dose baclofen, compared with placebo, resulted in a statistically significant reduction in agitation-related events. However, considering the modest effect and the totality of findings for the secondary end points and adverse events, further research is needed to determine the possible role of baclofen in this setting and to potentially optimize dosing.
