Stay-at-Home Orders During the COVID-19 Pandemic, an Opportunity to Improve Glucose Control Through Behavioral Changes in Type 1 Diabetes

OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown on glycemic control and associated factors in people living with type 1 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS An observational evaluation from a self-reported questionnaire on behavioral changes and glycemic information from flash glucose monitoring (FGM) during the lockdown in 1,378 individuals living with type 1 diabetes who used a French dedicated nationwide web application (CoviDIAB). RESULTS The main outcome was the change of the mean glucose level 2 months before and 1 month after the lockdown. We found that mean glucose improved from 9.1 +/- 1.7 mmol/L to 8.7 +/- 1.7 mmol/L (P < 0.001). Factors associated with better glycemic control were a decrease of alcohol consumption (odds ratio [OR] 1.75 [95% CI 1.04-2.94]), an increase in the frequency of FGM scans (OR 1.48 [1.04-2.10]) and in the number of hypoglycemia events (OR 1.67 [1.13-2.46]), and an easier diabetes control perception (OR 1.71 [1.18-2.49]). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that lockdown has a positive impact on glycemic control in people with type 1 diabetes. Objective Older workers are increasingly prevalent in health and human services, including the alcohol and other drug (AOD) sector. Their turnover intentions have important implications for service system stability and retention. Methods Descriptive and regression analyses of survey data examined age-related differences (<50, >= 50 years old) in non-government workers’ demographic, health and professional profiles and predictors of turnover intention. Turnover intention was predicted by job satisfaction, discrimination and work engagement. Preparation and characterization of gellan gum-chitosan polyelectrolyte complex films with the incorporation of thyme essential oil nanoemulsion

Antimicrobial food packaging with a sustained release of antimicrobial agents plays a key role in maintaining food quality and food safety. In this study, polyelectrolyte gellan gum (GG)-chitosan (CS) multilayer film was fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly technology with the incorporation of thyme essential oil (TEO) coarse emulsion (TEOC) or nanoemulsion (TEON). The microstructure of GG-CS three-layered film was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The red fluorescent signals in confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images indicated smaller droplets and more uniform distribution of TEON prepared by ultrasonic treatments, which was consistent with the particle size results and porous structure in SEM images. The film incorporated with 6% TEON exhibited higher antimicrobial activity than that with 6% TEOC, and it significantly reduced E. coli populations in liquid model system. Moreover, films incorporated with TEON showed improved mechanical flexibility (elongation at break) and UV blocking property in comparison to TEOC. This developed GGCS three-layered film loading with TEON was expected to be a potential antimicrobial material with sustained release property for food packaging applications.

Influences of PVA modification on performance of microencapsulated reversible thermochromic phase change materials for energy storage application

The aim of the paper was to enhance the mechanical properties and anti-permeability performance of microcapsules through shell modification to keep complete and stable structure during the manufacturing process. The effect of PVA adding dosage, modified methods and types of PVA on the performance of microcapsules was discussed in detail. When the PVA/MF ratio (0.04-0.25) was appropriate, the supercooling degree of microcapsules was reduced and thermal stability was improved to some extent. Furthermore, the modified method of adding PVA-1788 into microcapsules after curing probably formed the second protective encapsulation for RTPCMs, which contributed to obtaining MicroRTPCMs-2 with excellent mechanical properties and anti-permeability performance. Compared among the effects of various types of PVA modification on the performance of MicroRTPCMs, PVA with larger polymerization degree and higher alcoholysis degree can form modified resin with larger crosslinking degree, which was beneficial to generating more stable composite shell structure. Therefore, MicroRTPCMs1-2699 presented more outstanding mechanical properties and anti-permeability performance, satisfactory cycle stability and long-term reliability, as well as reversible thermochromic coloration and leakage-prevention performance. In the end, the main characteristic of RTPCMs was to in-situ observe the heat absorption, energy storage and heat release process of PCM cores, which would be great significance for the practical application of MicroRTPCMs in the fields of thermoregulated fibers, thermal energy storage textiles, heat energy transfers and energy-saving building materials.

Simultaneous nitrogen-blow distillation extraction: A novel approach for aroma extraction of white tea

In the present work, a simple and efficient method for distillation and simultaneous extraction of essential oils from white tea, called simultaneous nitrogen-blow distillation extraction (SNDE), was developed using nitrogen-blow extraction equipment. The effect of SNDE on compounds and characteristic of white tea extract were investigated in comparison with simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE), and the extraction conditions of SNDE were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). Volatile compounds of white teas were extracted using SNDE and SDE, and analyzed with gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Quantitative descriptive analysis of white tea extract aroma showed that in SNDE, sweet, roasted and woody aroma were significantly declined compared with SDE; whereas grassy green and pekoe aroma were more similar to the sensory profile based on sensory evaluation method. Aroma metabolites analysis showed that alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, heterocyclics and alkanes exhibited significant variations. The present work demonstrated that SNDE is an effective tool for the extraction and analysis of white tea volatile, which could truly reflect the quality characteristics of sensory aroma.

High-performance and stable Ru-Pd nanosphere catalyst supported on two-dimensional boron nitride nanosheets for the hydrogenation of furfural via water-mediated protonation

Bimetallic Ru-Pd catalysts are increasingly being investigated for applications in the upgrading of bio-oils to biofuels, owing to their high catalytic activities. Similarly, the recent development of Ru-Pd alloyed nanoparticle (NP) incorporated into hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) catalysts that can be utilized for tuning the selectivity of desired products has also received considerable attention. In the present study, nanoclusters of Ru-0-Pd-0 that self-assemble into spherical-like Ru-Pd bimetallic catalytic sites were successfully grown on the surfaces of BN nanosheets (Ru-Pd/BN NCs) via microwave irradiation for 30 s. HR-TEM investigations revealed the formation of 25 nm sized Ru-Pd nanoparticles comprising <= 2 nm hexagonal closed-pack (hcp) Ru-Pd clusters with Ru crystallites on the BN nanosheets. Further, furfural was effectively converted into furfural alcohol at a lower temperature (150 degrees C) and valuable cyclopentanone was obtained at a higher temperature (>250 degrees C) over the RuPd/BN catalyst through the protonation of water molecules. Furthermore, various solvents namely 2-propanol, toluene, and cyclohexane were also used to achieve the production of furan and tetrahydrofuran over the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst via the decarbonylation of furfural under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, for real-time upgrading, furfural-rich bio-oil produced by the pyrolysis of date-tree biomass was processed over the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst to obtain a maximum of 97% furfural conversion with a 71% FFA yield at 150 degrees C. The stability and reusability of the catalyst were also determined. The results demonstrated that the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst is highly active and chemically stable, and is therefore suitable for industrial applications.

Tribological Rehydration and Its Role on Frictional Behavior of PVA/GO Hydrogels for Cartilage Replacement Under Migrating and Stationary Contact Conditions

Graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel to improve its mechanical and tribological performances for potential articular cartilage replacement application. The compressive mechanical properties, creep resistance, and dynamic mechanical properties of PVA/GO hydrogels with varied GO content were studied. The frictional behavior of PVA/GO hydrogels under stationary and migrating contact configurations during reciprocal and unidirectional sliding movements were investigated. The effects of load, sliding speed, diameter of counterface, and counterface materials on the frictional coefficient of PVA/GO hydrogels were discussed. PVA/0.10wt%GO hydrogel show higher compressive modulus and creep resistance, but moderate friction coefficient. The friction coefficient of PVA/GO hydrogel under stationary and migratory contact configurations greatly depends on interstitial fluid pressurization and tribological rehydration. The friction behavior of PVA/GO hydrogels shows load, speed, and counterface diameter dependence similar to those observed in natural articular cartilage. A low friction coefficient (similar to 0.03) was obtained from PVA/0.10wt%GO hydrogel natural cartilage counter pair. [GRAPHICS] .

Solvent selection strategy for an ISPR (In Situ/In stream product recovery) process: The case of microbial production of p-coumaric acid coupled with a liquid-liquid extraction

This work reports on a solvent selection for the liquid-liquid extraction of p-coumaric acid produced by an engineered strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The solvent selection is a key point of liquid-liquid extraction processes and this work describes a simple strategy to choose a suitable solvent for an in situ or in stream product recovery (ISPR) process during bioconversion. ISPR processes allow to limit the inhibition caused by endproducts accumulation in the fermentation medium. The strategy consists in scoring different solvents based on different criteria weighted according to their significance for the process. Extraction performance, solvent biocompatibility and compatibility with materials, were chosen as essential criteria and the first two were assessed experimentally using distribution coefficients and flow cytometry, respectively. Following this first step, three solvents were selected as candidates for the process of interest and ranked according to the process needs using secondary criteria, namely safety, sourcing and price. Finally, oleyl alcohol obtained the highest score and was therefore considered as the most suitable candidate for an ISPR process with the aim of continuously extracting p-coumaric acid from the fermentation medium. This work is a first step towards the implementation of integrated extractive bioconversion for the production of bio-based molecules such as p-hydroxycinnamic acids and derivatives.

A new measure of health motivation influencing food choices and its association with food intakes and nutritional biomarkers in European adolescents

Objective: To develop a scale to assess health motivation influencing food choices and to explore its performance in the associations with food intakes and nutritional biomarkers. Design: Psychometric study using cross-sectional self-report questionnaires and nutritional biomarkers. Setting: Multi-centre investigation conducted in ten European cities. Participants: 2954 adolescents who were included in the HELENA study and completed the Food Choices and Preferences (FCP) questionnaire. Results: Nineteen out of 124 items of the FCP questionnaire were in the same dimension. Sixteen presented adequate parameters for the Scale of evaluatiOn of Food choIcEs (SOFIE). The scores were positively associated with the intakes of cereals, dairy products, meats and eggs, and fish, as well as with blood concentrations of vitamin C, beta-carotene, n-3 fatty acids, cobalamin, holo-transcobalamin and folate; scores were negatively associated with the intake of alcohol. Conclusions: SOFIE can improve the assessment of motivation influencing food choices based on items with the best performance and is proposed as a new measure to health-related studies.
