In this study, the structural characterization and anti-inflammation effect of dilute alkali-soluble polysaccharides from purple sweet potato were investigated. Three fractions (F-1, F-2 and F-3) were obtained by purifying crude polysaccharides on DEAE-52 cellulose column. The main fraction (F-1) was further purified on Sephadex G-200 column to afford purified alkali-soluble sweet potato polysaccharide (ASPP). The chem. structure of ASPP was analyzed by gas chromatog., Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, methylation anal. and NMR spectroscopy. Monosaccharide compositional anal. showed ASPP was composed of rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, mannose and glucose in the molar ratio of 2.8:1.9:1.0:7.6:53.3. Moreover, the backbone of ASPP was composed of 1,4-linked Glcp with side chains attached to the O-6 position. The anti-inflammation effect of ASPP was further investigated by in vitro and in vivo experiments Results showed ASPP could inhibit the levels of nitric oxide, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β and TNF-α but increase the production of IL-10 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. In addition ASPP could reduce the secretion of IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α in LPS-treated mice. Our results suggest ASPP can be developed as a novel anti-inflammation agent.

In this study, an inline anal. method was designed and applied in process characterization and development. The model reaction is the two-step diesterification of 3-methylphthalic anhydride with 2-ethylhexanol consisting of alcoholysis as the first step, followed by an acid-catalyzed, second esterification step leading to the corresponding diester. The final product is a potential, alternative plasticiser. For the inline measurements, attenuated total reflection Fourier transformed IR spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) was implemented. In order to evaluate the spectra recorded during the reaction, a chemometric model was established. In this work, Indirect Hard Modeling (IHM), a non-linear modeling approach was employed. The resp. model was calibrated by using offline samples analyzed with gas (GC) and liquid chromatog. (HPLC). After successful validation of the chemometric model, the inline measurements were utilized for reaction characterization. The acid-catalyzed, second esterification step was identified as the limiting reaction step. From batch reactions conducted at different temperatures, the energy of activation of this step was determined to be 79.5 kJ mol-1. Addnl., kinetics were shown to follow a pseudo-first order with respect to the monoester formation and a kinetic model was established. The model was validated in simulations with changed reaction conditions.

A native polysaccharide (RCPI) with sugar content of 79.94 ± 0.57% was isolated from raspberry fruits. A degraded polysaccharide (DRCPI) with sugar content of 83.82 ± 0.71% was obtained from the crude polysaccharides after degradation by Fe2+-H2O2 treatment. The mol. weights of RCPI and DRCPI were determined to be 411,000 and 8010 Da, resp. GC anal. revealed that both RCPI and DRCPI were composed of the same monosaccharides (rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose, galactose, and galacturonic acid) in different molar ratios. IR and NMR spectroscopy confirmed that RCPI and DRCPI possessed similar structural characteristics, although DRCPI displayed higher antioxidant activities and greater thermal stability. Furthermore, DRCPI exhibited excellent rheol. properties. These data provide evidence to support the application of raspberry-derived polysaccharides in functional foods.

A review. Tumor-suppressive effects of resveratrol have been shown in various types of cancer. However, regulation of tumor microenvironment by resveratrol is still unclear. Recent findings suggest resveratrol can potentiate its tumor-suppressive effect through modulation of the signaling pathways of cellular components (fibroblasts, macrophages and T cells). Also, studies have shown that resveratrol can suppress malignant phenotypes of cancer cells acquired in response to stresses of the tumor microenvironment, such as hypoxia, oxidative stress and inflammation. We discuss the effects of resveratrol on cancer cells in stress environment of tumors as well as interactions between cancer cells and non-cancer cells in this review.

A novel cell-wall polysaccharides (AAPs) were extracted from the fruits of Actinidia arguta and separated into four parts which were named water-eluted polysaccharide (WPS), salt-eluted polysaccharide (SPS)-1, SPS-2 and SPS-3. The monosaccharide composition and structural anal. showed that SPS-3 and SPS-2 were homogalacturonan (HG)-rich pectin, SPS-1 was rhamnogalacturonan (RG)-rich pectin and WPS was starch-like polysaccharides. All four kinds of polysaccharides displayed the ability to scavenge free radicals, chelate iron ion, inhibit lipid peroxidation and inhibit protein glycation, but SPS was obviously stronger than WPS. Especially SPS-3 displayed the strongest antioxidant and anti-glycated activities. In addition, the inhibitory effect of AAPs on AGEs formation is attributed to the inhibitory activity on the production of protein carbonyl group and the protective effects on the protein thiol group but not the scavenging capacity of dicarbonyl compounds, suggesting that its mechanisms of antiglycated effects may be of concern to their antioxidant activities.

Promising results have been obtained using compounds derived from aromatic plants for the control of agricultural pests. Such compounds of botanical origin can be highly effective, with multiple mechanisms of action, while at the same time having low toxicity towards nontarget organisms. However, the large-scale application of these substances for pest control is limited by their poor stability and other technol. issues. In this backdrop, the present work discusses perspectives for the use of compounds of botanical origin, as well as strategies employing the encapsulation techniques that can contribute to the development of systems for use in sustainable agricultural practices.

In this case study, hospital workers did suffer from symptoms related to the poor indoor air quality. To investigate reasons for symptoms MM40-survey and house inspection methods were performed. The study consisted of 49 operating rooms and 470 employees. MM-40 survey revealed that over 40% of the staff suffered from skin reactions, over 50% had upper respiratory tract symptoms and 25% suffered headaches. No reason for the staff’s symptom could be found in the structural studies of workplaces. The mean air exchange rate of the rooms was 5.51/h. In total 61 materials and 49 indoor air samples were taken. The most frequently found compounds in the material samples were 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and aliphatic hydrocarbons. VOC emissions were high in some of the material samples and they presumably were the one reason for the workers’ symptoms observed in some in of the rooms. However, indoor air VOC concentrations were low in most of the cases. According to the linear regression model emissions from flooring material couldn’t explain the indoor air concentration of the VOCs. One reason for that was the high ventilation rates of the rooms, which presumably kept VOC levels in indoors low. In addition, VOC concentrations indoors were strongly related to the ongoing healthcare activities in the hospital.

Moreover, the presented transfer hydrogenation protocol showed partial halogen selectivity with bromo-, fluoro- and chloro-substituted carbonyl analogs. In addition, the present catalyst can be reused up to five times without losing its efficiency and scaling-up the reaction enabled α-methylbenzyl alc. to be produced in 90% isolated yield.

Mouse models are widely used to study behavioral phenotypes related to neuropsychiatric disorders. However, different mouse strains vary in their inherent behavioral and mol. characteristics, which needs to be taken into account depending on the nature of the study. Here, we performed a detailed behavioral and mol. comparison of C57BL/6 (B6) and DBA/2 (DBA) mice, two inbred strains commonly used in neuropsychiatric research. We analyzed anxiety-related and depression-like traits, quantified hippocampal and plasma metabolite profiles, and assessed total antioxidant capacity (TAC). B6 mice exhibit increased depression-like and decreased anxiety-related behavior compared to DBA mice. Metabolite level differences indicate alterations in amino acid, nucleotide and mitochondrial metabolism that are accompanied by a decreased TAC in B6 compared to DBA mice. Our data reveal multiple behavioral and mol. differences between B6 and DBA mouse strains, which should be considered in the exptl. design for phenotype, pharmacol. and mechanistic studies relevant for neuropsychiatric disorders.
