Alterations in Insulin Levels in Adults with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure

Objective Evidence suggests that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) may adversely impact insulin production and signaling but there is limited information on the range of these effects and their future health consequences. Method A prospective cohort of predominantly African-American individuals identified while in utero and followed into adulthood were used to evaluate differences in various indicators of diabetes, including fasting plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and insulin levels. The homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was also computed. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated and normal defined as < 25 kg/m(2). Participants were categorized as having PAE (n = 39) if their mothers drank at least 1 ounce of absolute alcohol per week or more during the 1(st) trimester of pregnancy and as Controls (n = 22) if their mothers reported abstaining from alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Results Mean age of the sample was 36.0 +/- 1.5 years. Indices of glucose metabolism, including fasting plasma glucose and hemoglobin A1c levels, did not vary by group status but insulin levels and HOMA-IR values varied by group status and BMI level. PAE individuals with a normal BMI had lower insulin levels than Controls. However, in PAE subjects, there was a steeper increase in insulin levels relative to their BMI than in Control subjects. A cluster of 5 PAE cases had low levels of insulin and 4 of the 5 had severe cognitive impairment. Conclusions The bidirectional effects on insulin level and insulin resistance associated with PAE may indicate differential rates of diabetes disease impact or differential PAE impact in the brain and peripheral areas involved in insulin production and signaling. Elevated Lithium Ion Regulation by a Natural Silk Modified Separator for High-Performance Lithium Metal Anode

Metallic lithium anode has long stood as the holy grail in the field of secondary batteries for its high theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. But its edge is blunted by the inherent uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth that can curtail the cycle life and raise safety concerns. In this work, a functional modification layer from a derivant of natural silk is developed to protect lithium anode via a facile automatic transfer route. Via offering abundant functional group sites, the Li-ion flux on the anode surface is made uniform efficiently. The silk fibroin-based modification layer also contributes to the in situ formation of a Li3N-rich solid electrolyte interphase film on the lithium anode. Consequently, a high-performance lithium metal anode with dendrite-free morphology and significantly enhanced cycle stability is achieved: when paired with LiFePO4 cathodes, the full cell achieves a long-term cycling stability of 3000 cycles at 5 C; when paired with sulfur cathodes (5 mg(sulfur) cm(-2)), a long lifespan for over 400 cycles at 1 C is achieved. This work offers a facile and practical approach for the interface modification of the high-performance lithium anode and as well as provides a new perspective for the application of biomass-based materials in advanced batteries.

Estimating person-to-person variability in VOC emissions from personal care products used during showering

An increasing fraction of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions come from the domestic use of solvents, contained within myriad commonplace consumer products. Emission rates are often poorly characterized and depend significantly on individual behavior and specific product formulation and usage. Time-concentration profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) arising from the use of a representative selection of personal care products (PCPs) during showering are generated, and person-to-person variability in emissions calculated. A panel of 18 participants used a standardized set of products, dosages, and application times during showering in a controlled indoor bathroom setting. Proton transfer mass spectrometry was used to measure the in-room VOC evolution of limonene (representing the sum of monoterpenes), benzyl alcohol, and ethanol. The release of VOCs had reproducible patterns between users, but noticeable variations in absolute peak concentrations, despite identical amounts of material being used. The amounts of VOC emitted to air for one showering activity were as follows: limonene (1.77 mg +/- 42%), benzyl alcohol (1.07 mg +/- 41%), and ethanol (0.33 mg +/- 78%). Real-world emissions to air were between 1.3 and 11 times lower than bottom-up estimates based on dynamic headspace measurements of product emissions rates, likely a result of PCPs being washed away before VOC evaporation could occur.

A facile and robust route to polyvinyl alcohol-based triboelectric nanogenerator containing flame-retardant polyelectrolyte with improved output performance and fire safety

Harvesting energy from various ambient mechanical vibrations and motions is a promising green technology to provide electrical power for integrated electronic devices or sensors. However, some applications of the triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) in harsh environment faces challenges of fire safety. Herein, we proposed a facile, robust, and low-cost solution-casting method to prepare flame-resistant triboelectric polymer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by doping PPA-PEI polyelectrolyte synthesized from phenyl phosphonic acid and branched polyethyleneimine. The PVA/PPA-PEI film containing 10 wt% PPA-PEI not only self-extinguished immediately after the burner moved away while the neat PVA film burned thoroughly, but also showed the minimum peak heat release rate (PHRR) of 148.7 +/- 4.2 W/g with a reduction of similar to 47.8%. Contributed by the hybrid of electron and ion transfer on the triboelectric layers during the electrification process, the resultant PVA/10 wt% PPA-PEI: PVDF flame-retarding TENG also exhibited the maximum open-circuit voltage of 28.8 +/- 0.4 V, short-circuit current of 62.3 +/- 5.4 mu A, and power of 228.8 mu W, which were respectively 50.0%, 170.0%, and 57.4% higher than those of the pristine PVA: PVDF TENG when mechanically excited by a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) working at 2000 mu m and 10 Hz. Here, a self-healing material, application in Capacitive deionization for the first time is reported, which could autonomously self-healing damaged interfaces. We fabricated that hydrogel (MNH) composites incorporating MXene (Ti3C2Tx) by dynamic poly(vinylalcohol)-based network cross-linked by diol-borate ester bonding. The material fast restores its configuration, mechanical properties, and capacitive performances during after healing and shift different shape in the actual application environment transformation. The MNH electrode has good mechanical properties, self-healing efficiency is as high as 92%, the electrochemical healing properties is of 95.8%. The feasibility of its application in capacitive deionization was proved. Addictions in the COVID-19 era: Current evidence, future perspectives a comprehensive review

Background: In the context of the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic, an up-to-date review of current challenges in addictions is necessary. While large scale disasters may have an impact on substance use and addictions, the use of some substances is also likely to modify the risk of COVID-19 infection or course. Many countries have imposed lockdowns. Whether this quarantine or the end of lockdown measures will have an impact on substance use is discussed. The aim of this review is to gather knowledge for clinicians and to guide public health policies during/after lockdown. Methods: PubMed was reviewed in August 6th (2020), to determine the current evidences and observations concerning the addictions and SARS-CoV2. We used all the names of the severe acute respiratory syndrome of coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2 previously 2019 nCoV), the name of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and common substances of abuse. For the physiopathological parts, searches were conducted using key words such as infection or pneumonia. For the lockdown effects, key words such as quarantine, disaster or outbreak were used. Results: Overall, pathophysiological data showed an increased risk of infections for individuals with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and a possible protective role of nicotine. During lockdown, there is a substantial risk of increasing SUDs. Individuals with opioid use disorder are particularly at risk of relapse or of involuntary withdrawal. After lockdown, increase of use may be observed as far as years after. Individuals with addictions are at higher risk of multimorbidity and mortality during COVID outbreak. Conclusion: This review describes useful strategies in clinical practice, including a systematic assessment of addiction comorbidity during this almost worldwide lockdown/pandemic. This review also highlights important areas for future research.

A Randomized Trial of Albumin Infusions in Hospitalized Patients with Cirrhosis

BACKGROUND Infection and increased systemic inflammation cause organ dysfunction and death in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Preclinical studies provide support for an antiinflammatory role of albumin, but confirmatory large-scale clinical trials are lacking. Whether targeting a serum albumin level of 30 g per liter or greater in these patients with repeated daily infusions of 20% human albumin solution, as compared with standard care, would reduce the incidences of infection, kidney dysfunction, and death is unknown. METHODS We conducted a randomized, multicenter, open-label, parallel-group trial involving hospitalized patients with decompensated cirrhosis who had a serum albumin level of less than 30 g per liter at enrollment. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either targeted 20% human albumin solution for up to 14 days or until discharge, whichever came first, or standard care. Treatment commenced within 3 days after admission. The composite primary end point was new infection, kidney dysfunction, or death between days 3 and 15 after the initiation of treatment. RESULTS A total of 777 patients underwent randomization, and alcohol was reported to be a cause of cirrhosis in most of these patients. A median total infusion of albumin of 200 g (interquartile range, 140 to 280) per patient was administered to the targeted albumin group (increasing the albumin level to =30 g per liter), as compared with a median of 20 g (interquartile range, 0 to 120) per patient administered to the standard-care group (adjusted mean difference, 143 g; 95% confidence interval [CI], 127 to 158.2). The percentage of patients with a primary end-point event did not differ significantly between the targeted albumin group (113 of 380 patients [29.7%]) and the standard-care group (120 of 397 patients [30.2%]) (adjusted odds ratio, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.71 to 1.33; P = 0.87). A time-to-event analysis in which data were censored at the time of discharge or at day 15 also showed no significant between-group difference (hazard ratio, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.81 to 1.35). More severe or life-threatening serious adverse events occurred in the albumin group than in the standard-care group. CONCLUSIONS In patients hospitalized with decompensated cirrhosis, albumin infusions to increase the albumin level to a target of 30 g per liter or more was not more beneficial than the current standard care in the United Kingdom. Cheers together, but not alone: Peer drinking moderates alcohol consumption following interpersonal stress

In view of the importance of the need to belong in motivating behavior, we examined whether interpersonal and academic stress differentially influence social and solitary alcohol consumption and whether social and solitary alcohol consumption differentially predict next-day interpersonal and academic stress. Based on research suggesting that drinking with friends is related to increased alcohol consumption following belongingness threat, we also examined whether peer consumption moderates associations between daily interpersonal stress and social drinking. Each day for 30 days, 1641 undergraduates reported stress, alcohol consumption, and peer consumption. Academic stress was related to lower levels of social and solitary alcohol consumption. Interpersonal stress was associated with greater social alcohol consumption, but only when students reported being around others who were drinking greater than average peer quantities. However, although social drinking was related to lower next-day academic stress, it was unrelated to next-day interpersonal stress. Findings are consistent with the notion that individuals’ perceptions of peers’ alcohol use might serve as a signal to join in this behavior to reduce belongingness threats associated with interpersonal stressors, although this may not be an effective strategy.

Synthesis and characterization of Mg1(-x)Ni(x)Al(2)O(4) and their photocatalytic behaviors towards Congo red under UV light irradiation

In this paper, MgAl2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by the Sol-gel auto combustion method and were doped with different concentrations of Ni2+ (x= 0, 0.1, 0.05, and 0.03). By this method, a novel photocatalyst which had better decolorization percentages of Congo red(compared) to MgAl2O4 was produced. The MgAl2O4 samples were calcinated at 1000 degrees C. The samples obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, FT-IR, EDX, and ICP-AES. The photocatalytic activity of MgAl2O4 samples were evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) to confirm the performance rate of the photocatalyst. Also, the photocatalytic properties were investigated in the presence of UV light, certain amounts of photocatalysts, and Congo red dye. The best- obtained results of the photocatalytic activity among the prepared samples were Mg0.9Ni0.1Al2O4 because this photocatalyst had a removal conversion of 99.3 % of the dye after 90 min, which was better than other photocatalysts in similar conditions. Mg0.9Ni0.1Al2O4 was used as a photocatalyst five successfully times without any changes or loss of its high photocatalytic activity for this process. In this project, we used Ni2+ to dope MgAl2O4 nanoparticles. The results decolorization percentages of Congo red showed that Mg0.9Ni0.1Al2O4 had better efficiency compared to MgAl2O4, (and other) photocatalysts.
