These form a network of interrelated nodes. Research also provides evidence of another constellation or syndrome, characterized by (1) belief that one has robust physical health against COVID-19, (2) belief that the threat of COVID-19 has been exaggerated, and (3) disregard for social distancing. These also form a network of nodes known as a COVID-19 Disregard Syndrome. The present study, based on a population-representative sample of 3075 American and Canadian adults, sought to investigate how these syndromes are related to substance use and abuse. We found substantial COVID-19-related increases in alcohol and drug use. Network analyses indicated that although the two syndromes are negatively correlated with one another, they both have positive links to alcohol and drug abuse. More specifically, COVID-19-related traumatic stress symptoms and the tendency to disregard social distancing were both linked to substance abuse. Synthesis and Characterization of Poly (vinyl alcohol) / Fullerene C60 Membrane via Chemical and Radiation Crosslinking

Fullerene C60 (FULL-C60) was used as a nano-filler in the preparation of the chemical-crosslinking polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by glutaraldehyde (Glut) which is copolymerized with acrylate oligomers, 2carboxyethyl acrylate (CEA) followed by gamma irradiation. The effect of the FULL-C60 content on the gel content and swelling behavior of Glut-(PVA/CEA)-FULL-C60 copolymer hydrogel was investigated. The results revealed an increase in the gel content and a significant reduction in swelling of the nanocomposite material. There are influences for the PVA molecular weight, fullerene content, and absorbed dose on the gel content of the prepared nanocomposite. The irradiation of chemical crosslinked nanocomposites demonstrated approximately a 90% gelation over a range of 50-300 kGy irradiation doses. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed a homogeneous distribution of nanocomposites in the composite matrix. The improvement in the thermal stability of radiation Glut(PVA/CEA) and Glut-(PVA-CEA)-FULL-C60 was evaluated using the thermogravimetric analysis Technique (TGA). The mechanical properties were examined via dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) which showed significant variation because of the addition of nanocomposites and irradiation doses.

Study on the treatment of sudden cadmium pollution in surface water by a polymer enhanced ultrafiltration process

The removal of cadmium(ii) pollution in surface water by a polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) process was investigated. Three water soluble polymers, chitosan (CTS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylate sodium (PAAS), were selected for this study. Of the three polymers, PAAS had strong interactions with Cd2+, and the PEUF achieved a high removal of Cd2+; therefore, PAAS was used as a complexing agent for the simulated cadmium pollution experiment. Experiments were performed as a function of the aqueous pH, polymer/Cd2+ ratio (P/M), ionic strength and humic acid. Under optimum experimental conditions, the Cd2+ removal rate reached 100%. pH was the main factor affecting removal of Cd2+, which decreased to 60% at a pH of 4. The Cd2+ removal was found to decrease as NaCl and HA were added. The analysis showed that the mechanism of NaCl could be a compressed electric double layer, while the mechanism of HA and H+ was competitive complexation. Finally, UF membrane fouling, the dissociation of PAAS-Cd and the regeneration of PAAS were investigated. The results showed that the higher P/M was, the lower the pH, the higher the HA concentration, and the more serious the UF membrane fouling were. The dissociation rate of PAAS-Cd reached 99.8% at a pH of 2.5. When the P/M was 5, the removal rate of Cd reached 99.6% with the addition of 20% new PAAS in the regenerate. This result showed that the PEUF process could be a promising method for removing Cd pollution in surface water.

Visible-Light Promoted C-O Bond Formation with an Integrated Carbon Nitride-Nickel Heterogeneous Photocatalyst

Ni-deposited mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (Ni-mpg-CNx) is introduced as an inexpensive, robust, easily synthesizable and recyclable material that functions as an integrated dual photocatalytic system. This material overcomes the need of expensive photosensitizers, organic ligands and additives as well as limitations of catalyst deactivation in the existing photo/Ni dual catalytic cross-coupling reactions. The dual catalytic Ni-mpg-CNx is demonstrated for C-O coupling between aryl halides and aliphatic alcohols under mild condition. The reaction affords the ether product in good-to-excellent yields (60-92 %) with broad substrate scope, including heteroaryl and aryl halides bearing electron-withdrawing, -donating and neutral groups. The heterogeneous Ni-mpg-CNx can be easily recovered from the reaction mixture and reused over multiple cycles without loss of activity. The findings highlight exciting opportunities for dual catalysis promoted by a fully heterogeneous system.

A highly elastic, Room-temperature repairable and recyclable conductive hydrogel for stretchable electronics

Conductive hydrogels present great potential in bioelectronics, ionotronic devices, and electronic skin. However, the creeping and plastic deformation of hydrogel often lead to poor stability and low reliability in applications. Here, we report a highly elastic conductive hydrogel based on crosslinked carbon nanotubes (CNT) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). With the formation of double crosslinking interactions, i.e., strong interaction from covalent acetal bonds and weak interaction from hydrogen bonds, CNT-PVA networks exhibit good stretchability (fracture stain up to 500%), rapid recovery, zero-residual deformation, and excellent mechanical stability. As such, the electromechanical response of this dual-crosslinked conductive hydrogel is stable and repeatable for a wide range of loading rates. Benefiting from the abundant hydroxyl groups and reversible acetal linking bridges in hydrogel networks, the prepared conductive hydrogel is not only repairable at room temperature, but also recyclable. Abnormal volatile and normal stable bipolar resistive switching characteristics of hybrid nanocomposites: Morphology-defects-property ‘Relationship

The characteristics of nano-fillers in a polymer matrix have a significant influence on the microstructural, thermo-mechanical, optical, and conductivity properties of organic-inorganic nanocomposites. In this study, we investigated the influence of inorganic component – ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) on the characteristics and properties of PVA-ZnO nanocomposites which have been applied as an insulation layer in a resistive switching (RS) device. Three nanocomposites originating from three different types of ZnO NPs exhibit different RS characteristics: Abnormal volatile RS is observed with the similar to 20-nm-sized spherical-like NPs (Z1) and 15-20-nm-sized mixed shaped NPs (Z2), whereas normal nonvolatile bipolar RS is observed with the 50-150-nm-sized hexagonal rod-like NPs (Z3). The concentration and size of the intrinsic defects of the ZnO NPs as well as the thickness of the PVA-ZnO interface are responsible for the different charge transport paths, operating voltage ranges, and ON/OFF switching ratios of the memory devices. Simultaneously, the distinct sizes and morphologies of the ZnO NPs can affect the nanoholes among the PVA chains and induce various fractional free volumes in the nanocomposites. It may modify the conductivity of the nanocomposite layer or the resistance ratio of the memory devices. Understanding the influence of ZnO NPs size, morphology, and defects on the characteristics of RS of PVA-ZnO nanocomposites can help in the selection and management of functional applications, especially in the data storage field. In a typical electrolysis experiment 4 mL of a 0.2 MBu4NBF4 DMSO solution was added to the divided part followed bythe addition of 200 mL of acetic acid. In the anodic part neocuproinePd(OAc)2 (0.1 equivalent), 2,6-dimethoxybenzoquinone(0.6 equivalent) and the alcohol (0.7 mmol) was added to a 14 mL solution of 0.2 M Bu4NBF4 in DMSO. The cell was closed andput under an argon atmosphere. Stirring was started, next apotential of 0.7 V was applied. After the appropriate reaction time30 mL of water was added to the reaction mixture. The resultingmixture was extracted with tert-butylmethylether (3 times 25 mL).The collected organic layer was washed with 15 mL of water tofurther remove DMSO. Next the organic layer was dried withMgSO4 filtered and evaporated. The resulting solution wasexamined with NMR. Isolated products were obtained usingcolumn chromatography with heptane/ethylacetate (7/3) aseluent.

General procedure: To an oven dried 9mL screw cap tube, a magnetic stir-bar, diamine (0.5mmol), vicinal diol (1.5mmol), CsOH.H2O (0.375mmol), Co-phen/C-800 (1.5mol%) and toluene (2.5mL) were added under argon atmosphere. Then, the tube was sealed and placed in a preheated oil bath at 150C for 24h. After completion of the reaction, the tube was allowed to cool at room temperature. Then, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. Finally, the product was purified by silica gel column chromatography using ethyl acetate/hexane as eluent.
