Soot properties in ethylene inverse diffusion flames blended with different carbon chain length alcohols

This study was devoted to the characterization of soot properties in ethylene inverse diffusion flames with different carbon length alcohols, which mainly contained the soot morphology, soot nanostructure, and oxidation reactivity. Ethanol, n-butanol, n-hexanol, and n-octanol were selected as the fuel additives. For all blended flames, a 30% volume fraction of ethylene was substituted by different alcohol additives, and the flow rates of the alcohols were adjusted to achieve the same number of carbon atoms. A combination of the thermophoretic sampling technique and the quartz plate sampling method was applied to gain soot features. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used. The results showed that soot production was reduced with the addition of all alcohols, and the minimum soot yield was observed with ethanol addition. The soot-reducing ability gradually decreased as the alcohols move higher. The sizes of the primary particles and soot aggregates increased slightly faster with the increasing carbon chain length. Furthermore, the soot generated from higher alcohol-doped flame has a higher degree of graphitization with longer fringe length and smaller fringe tortuosity. The four different alcohol additives all could improve soot oxidation reactivity. There was a correlation between soot oxidation reactivity and the carbon chain length of the alcohols that the longer carbon chain of these alcohol additives led to lower soot reactivity.

Gambling disorder seeking treatment patients and tobacco use in relation to clinical profiles

Objectives: Tobacco smoking and gambling disorder (GD) often co-occur. However, few studies have assessed the extent to which cigarette smoking may serve to classify and/or better define GD behaviour profiles. Methods: Among a large sample of n = 3,652 consecutive treatment-seeking patients with GD (91% men). Smokers were compared to non-smokers across different sociodemographic, clinical, psychopathological and personality variables. The effect sizes for the means and the proportion differences between the groups were estimated. An evaluation of the smoking changes over the last 15 years was also performed. Results: From the total sample, 62.4% of gamblers reported tobacco use. A decreasing linear trend in tobacco use was observed within the studied period, women having a more irregular pattern. The use of tobacco was linked to the use of alcohol and other illegal drugs. Gamblers who smoke, as compared to those who don’t, presented lower education levels, lower social position indexes and active employment. They were younger, with an earlier age of onset, shorter duration of the gambling behavior, higher GD severity, more psychological symptoms, higher scores in novelty seeking and lower scores in reward dependence, self-directedness and self-transcendence. Conclusions: Gamblers seeking treatment who smoke display particular social, clinical, psychological, temperamental and character features different from non-smoking gamblers, suggesting that the presence or absence of comorbid smoking condition in GD should always be considered when developing an optimal treatment, as gamblers who smoke might need treatment strategies different from non-smoking gamblers.

Unhealthy alcohol and drug use is associated with an increased length of stay and hospital cost in patients undergoing major upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic oncologic resections

Background: Few studies evaluate the impact of unhealthy alcohol and drug use on the risk and severity postoperative outcomes after upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic oncologic resections. Methods: The National Inpatient Sample was queried to identify patients undergoing total gastrectomy, esophagectomy, total pancreatectomy, and pancreaticoduodenectomy between 2012 and 2015. Unhealthy alcohol and drug use was assessed by the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, and National Inpatient Sample coder designation. Multivariable regression was used to identify associations between alcohol and drug use and postoperative complication, duration of stay, hospital cost, and mortality. Results: In the study, 59,490 patients met inclusion criteria; 2,060 (3.5%) had unhealthy alcohol use; 1,265 (2.1%) had unhealthy drug use. Postoperative complication rates were higher in patients with alcohol and drug use than in abstainers (67.5% vs 62.8% vs 57.2%; P < .01). On multivariable regression, alcohol use was independently associated with increased risk of a nonwithdrawal complication (odds ratio 1.33 [1.05, 1.68]), and alcohol and drug use were independently associated with increased length of stay (1.54 [0.12, 2.96]) and 2.22 [0.90, 3.55] days) and cost ($5,471 [$60, $10,881] and $4,022 [$402, $7,643]), but not mortality. Conclusion: Unhealthy substance use is associated with increased rates of postoperative complications, prolonged length of stay, and costs in patients undergoing major upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic oncologic resections. What happens when pesticides are solubilised in binary ionic/zwitterionic-nonionic mixed micelles?

Hypothesis: Surfactants have been widely used as adjuvants in agri-sprays to enhance the solubility of pesticides in foliar spray deposits and their mobility through leaf cuticles. Previously, we have characterised pesticide solubilisation in nonionic surfactant micelles, but what happens when pesticides become solubilised in anionic, cationic and zwitterionic and their mixtures with nonionic surfactants remain poorly characterised. Experiments: To facilitate characterisations by SANS and NMR, we used nonionic surfactant hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E6), anionic sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and zwitterionic dodecylphosphocholine (C12PC) as model adjuvant systems to solubilise 3 pesticides, Cyprodinil (CP), Azoxystrobin (AZ) and Difenoconazole (DF), representing different structural features. The investigation focused on the influence of solubilisates in driving changes to the micellar nanostructures in the absence or presence of electrolytes. NMR and NOESY were applied to investigate the solubility and location of each pesticide in the micelles. SANS was used to reveal subtle changes to the micellar structures due to pesticide solubilisation with and without electrolytes. Findings: Unlike nonionic surfactants, the ionic and zwitterionic surfactant micellar structures remain unchanged upon pesticide solubilisation. Electrolytes slightly elongate the ionic surfactant micelles but have no effect on nonionic and zwitterionic surfactants. Pesticide solubilisation could alter the structures of the binary mixtures of ionic/zwitterionic and ionic/nonionic micelles by causing elongation, shell shrinkage and dehydration, with the exact alteration being determined by the molar ratio in the mixture. Calcium-induced-gel properties for low methoxyl pectin in the presence of different sugar alcohols

The gel behavior of low methoxyl pectin (LMP), de-esterified by high hydrostatic pressure (HHP)-assisted enzymatic method, was comparatively investigated in the presence of different sugar alcohols (erythritol, xylitol and sorbitol). Results showed that both sugar alcohol type and concentration had significant effects on LMP gelation. Gel strength, elasticity, and storage modulus G’ decreased with increasing sugar alcohol concentration, but erythritol-gels always showed the highest value, and sorbitol-gels the lowest at the same sugar alcohol concentration. All LMP gels had good water holding capacity (>97%) when the sugar alcohols concentration was less than 20% (w/v). Moreover, micro-rheology properties revealed that erythritol-gels with better elasticity also formed faster, showing higher gel point. These differences might be mainly due to the combination of sugar alcohols with calcium and pectin inhibiting the interaction between pectin and calcium. In addition, the competition for water between pectin and sugar alcohol also played a certain role. All these results indicated that erythritol-gels had more potential application in low-calorie foods due to its superior gel properties and lower calories.

High-performance and stable Ru-Pd nanosphere catalyst supported on two-dimensional boron nitride nanosheets for the hydrogenation of furfural via water-mediated protonation

Bimetallic Ru-Pd catalysts are increasingly being investigated for applications in the upgrading of bio-oils to biofuels, owing to their high catalytic activities. Similarly, the recent development of Ru-Pd alloyed nanoparticle (NP) incorporated into hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) catalysts that can be utilized for tuning the selectivity of desired products has also received considerable attention. In the present study, nanoclusters of Ru-0-Pd-0 that self-assemble into spherical-like Ru-Pd bimetallic catalytic sites were successfully grown on the surfaces of BN nanosheets (Ru-Pd/BN NCs) via microwave irradiation for 30 s. HR-TEM investigations revealed the formation of 25 nm sized Ru-Pd nanoparticles comprising <= 2 nm hexagonal closed-pack (hcp) Ru-Pd clusters with Ru crystallites on the BN nanosheets. Further, furfural was effectively converted into furfural alcohol at a lower temperature (150 degrees C) and valuable cyclopentanone was obtained at a higher temperature (>250 degrees C) over the RuPd/BN catalyst through the protonation of water molecules. Furthermore, various solvents namely 2-propanol, toluene, and cyclohexane were also used to achieve the production of furan and tetrahydrofuran over the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst via the decarbonylation of furfural under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, for real-time upgrading, furfural-rich bio-oil produced by the pyrolysis of date-tree biomass was processed over the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst to obtain a maximum of 97% furfural conversion with a 71% FFA yield at 150 degrees C. The stability and reusability of the catalyst were also determined. The results demonstrated that the Ru-Pd/BN catalyst is highly active and chemically stable, and is therefore suitable for industrial applications.

Short-term impact of the COVID-19 confinement measures on health behaviours and weight gain among adults in Belgium

Background In Belgium, confinement measures were introduced on the 13th of March 2020 to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). These measures may affect health behaviours of the population such as eating habits, physical activity and alcohol consumption, which in turn can lead to weight gain resulting in overweight and obesity, increasing the risk of several chronic diseases, but also of severe COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of confinement measures on health behaviours and their associations with weight gain. Methods Data were derived from the second national COVID-19 health survey. Data were collected between the 16th and the 23rd of April 2020. The recruitment of participants was based on snowball sampling via Sciensano’s website, invitations via e-mail and social media. The study sample includes participants aged 18 years and over with no missing data on the variables of interest (n = 28,029). The association between self-reported weight gain and health behaviour changes, adjusted for gender, age group and household composition was assessed through OR’s (95% CI) calculated with logistic regression models, using post-stratification weights. Results Overall, 28.6% reported weight gain after 6 weeks of confinement. Higher odds of weight gain were observed among participants who increased or decreased their consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (OR = 1.39 (1.15-1.68) and 1.29 (1.04-1.60), respectively), among those who increased their consumption of sweet or salty snacks (OR = 3.65 (3.27-4.07)), among those who became less physically active (OR = 1.91 (1.71-2.13)), and among those who increased their alcohol consumption (OR = 1.86 (1.66-2.08)). Conclusions The most important correlates of weight gain during confinement were an increased consumption of sweet or salty snacks and being less physically active. These findings confirm the impact of diet and exercise on short term weight gain and plead to take more action, in supporting people to achieve healthier behaviours in order to tackle overweight and obesity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Highly reproducible c-Si texturing by metal-free TMAH etchant and monoTEX agent

Surface texturing of a silicon solar cell is critical to provide surface antireflection and light trapping. The common texturing method based on KOH as an etchant with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as a wetting agent suffers two disadvantages: introducing metal contamination and low repeatability. To circumvent the limitation of the KOH-IPA method, we develop a new texturing regime by substituting TMAH for KOH, and a commercial surfactant RENA monoTEX for IPA. This TMAH-monoTEX method shows advantages of non-metal contamination, high reproducibility, short process time and small random pyramids. IBC solar cells fabricated with the TMAH-monoTEX texture achieved an efficiency of 25% with J(sc) of 42.9 mA/cm(2), V-oc of 719 mV and FF of 81.1%.
