Photochemical degradation of fragrance ingredient benzyl formate in water: Mechanism and toxicity assessment

Recently, fragrance ingredients have attracted increasing attention due to their imperceptible risks accompanying the comfortable feeling. To understand transformation mechanisms and toxicity evolution of benzyl formate (BF) in environment, its photochemical degradation in water was thoroughly studied herein. Results showed that 83.5% BF was degraded under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for 30 min. Laser flash photolysis and quenching experiments demonstrated that triplet excited state ((BF)-B-3*), O-2(center dot-), and O-1(2) were three main reactive species found during BF photodegradation. Eight degradation intermediates, including benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, o-cresol, bibenzyl, benzyl ether, 1,2-diphenylethanol, benzoic acid, and benzylhemiformal, were mainly formed as identified by LC-Q-TOF/MS and GC-MS analyses. Furthermore, the degradation mechanism was explained as the bond cleavage of (BF)-B-3* and BF center dot+, O-2(center dot-)/O-1(2) oxidation, e(aq)(-) reduction, and (OH)-O-center dot addition reactions. Aquatic assessment suggests that except benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, and benzylhemiformal, all the products were persistent and could result in increased aquatic toxicity compared to original BF. Consequently, these degradation products may cause more toxicity to organisms if they remain accumulated in water environment for a long time.

Au coated ZnO/MWCNTs nanocomposites film-induced four-wave-mixing effect for multi-wavelength generation in erbium-doped fiber laser

High optical nonlinearity of nanostructured materials has been attested as a reliable technique for the generation of a multi-wavelength fiber laser. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a simple and efficient method for generating continuous-wave (CW) multi-wavelength erbium-doped laser (EDFL) using a nonlinear effect of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly nonlinear nanocomposite film. A nanocomposite film containing gold nanostars coated zinc-oxide nanorods/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZnO-NRs@Au NSs/MWCNTs) embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer was prepared, characterized, and then incorporated into the laser cavity to induce the FWM effect. Benefiting from the FWM processes, the induced intensity-dependent gain alleviates the intense gain-competition in the EDFL and increases the number of lasing wavelengths. A five-lasing line with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 36.3 dBm has been observed by appropriately adjusting the pump strength to 300 mW. Repeated measurements verified the high stability of the laser operating at room temperature with less than 3 dBm fluctuations on output power and 0.21 nm lasing wavelength drifts for all wavelengths cases. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first demonstration of multi-wavelength fiber laser utilizing ZnO-NRs@Au NSs/MWCNTs nanocomposite. The results reveal the excellent nonlinear optical properties of the prepared nanocomposite and lay a foundation for its application in the generation of a multi-wavelength fiber laser.

Strategies to utilize naturally occurring protein architectures as nanovehicles for hydrophobic nutraceuticals

The development of protein-based nanovehicles to improve water solubility, stability and bioavailability of hydrophobic or poorly soluble nutraceuticals has become a subject of fast increasing interest in the field. This review mainly presents the state-of-art knowledge about the utilization of naturally occurring nanostructured protein architectures (casein micelles, ferritin and legume oligomeric globulins) as nanovehicles for hydrophobic nutraceuticals or drugs, through a disassembly and reassembly strategy. First, the composition and structural features of these three naturally occurring architectures are briefly summarized. Then, many strategies and techniques to mediate the disassembly and reassembly of these naturally occurring architectures are comprehensively reviewed, including pH-, urea-, alcohol-, high pressure-, and heat-mediated disassembly and reassembly (or dissociation and reassociation). Last, reassembled casein micelles, ferritin (or apoferritin) and legume oligomeric protein nanoparticles are demonstrated to perform as outstanding nanovehicles for improving water dispersion, stability and bioactivities of many nutraceuticals or drugs. Due to the rapidly increasing consumer interests for health-benefiting foods, this review is of importance for the development of a kind of outstanding nanovehicles for nutraceuticals with a great potential to be applied in functional foods or drug formulations.

In vitro biotransformation and evaluation of potential transformation products of chlorinated paraffins by high resolution accurate mass spectrometry

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are high production chemicals, which leads to their ubiquitous presence in the environment. To date, few studies have measured CPs in humans and typically at relatively low concentrations, despite indications that exposure may be high compared to various persistent organic pollutants. The aim of this study is to investigate the in vitro biotransformation of CPs by human liver fractions. We determined the changes of the CP concentrations after the enzymatic transformation with human liver microsomes using a two-tiered in vitro approach. CP concentrations decreased with human liver microsomes, with the decreases of 33-94% after incubating with different groups of enzymes for 2 h. The profiles of CP rapidly shifted after the incubation with human liver microsomes. In addition, the concentrations of CPs and the biotransformation products were tentatively measured using high-resolution mass spectrometric analysis, including very short CP (carbon chain length <10), alcohols, ketones, and carboxylic acids. C-C bond cleavage is a potential transformation pathway for CPs, and ketones are potential products of CP biotransformation, especially for long-chain CPs (C->17). The ketone products may be investigated as CP exposure biomarker in biomonitoring studies.

Evaluation of polyvinyl alcohol and high calcium fly ash based geopolymer for the improvement of soft Bangkok clay

Soft Bangkok clay (SC) is recognized as a problematic soil in Thailand. This research investigates the possibility of using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and high calcium fly ash (FA) geopolymers to improve the strength of SC in deep soil mixing applications. The liquid alkaline activator (L) was composed of sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The studied influence factors included FA content, water content, L content, Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio, PVA concentration, PVA content, and curing time. Strength development and microstructure in the PVA-FA geopolymer stabilized SC were evaluated via the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test. The optimum ingredient considering workability and cost of FA geopolymer stabilized SC was found to be at a mix design of LOLL, Na2SiO3/NaOH = 1, FA = 40% and L/FA = 0.6, whereby a 28-day UCS of 1026 kPa was attained. The optimum PVA content and PVA concentrations were found at 15% and 4%. The 7-day and 28-day UCS values were improved by PVA up to 40% and 42% compared to those of the specimen without PVA, respectively. The outcome of this research will promote the usage of PVA-FA geopolymer as an alternative green soil stabilizer alternative to Portland cement for a DM improved soft Bangkok clay.

Post-legalization changes in marijuana use in a sample of young California adults

Introduction: Increasing marijuana use among young adults is a concern due to substantial acute and chronic health risks. More widespread use of marijuana may also lead to increased use of nicotine and tobacco products. California legalized commercial sales of marijuana for recreational use as of January 2018. To our knowledge no studies to date have examined subsequent changes in marijuana use. The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that marijuana use frequency increased following legalization of recreational sales. We also hypothesized that increased marijuana frequency would predict greater frequency of nicotine/tobacco consumption. Methods: The study was a secondary analysis of a longitudinal study of tobacco use among non-daily cigarette smokers. Participants were 563 young adults (aged 18-24) enrolled in 2015-16 and followed quarterly for 3 years. Results: A piecewise multilevel regression model indicated that marijuana use frequency did not change over time, including following legalization. More frequent use was associated with younger age and identifying as white (ps < 0.001, which did not change after legalization. Marijuana frequency was moderated by sex (p < .001), with women reporting increasing and men decreasing use over time. It was also associated with tobacco use, and particularly with e-cigarette use following legalization (ps < 0.05). Conclusions: Findings suggest legalization of recreational marijuana sales had a negligible overall impact on days of use among young adults, but may have prompted increased interest in marijuana among some, particularly women and e-cigarette users. The continuously evolving landscape around these products indicates that ongoing surveillance is critical. Do you like my blog? If you like, you can also browse other articles about this kind. Conjoint adolescent developmental trajectories of alcohol and marijuana use and early adult outcomes among North American Indigenous people

Objective: The current study examined the developmental interrelationships between alcohol and marijuana use trajectories from ages 10 to 18 years in a sample of North American Indigenous adolescents. Distinct co-use groups were formed to create profiles of young adult outcomes. Method: Dual group-based trajectory models of marijuana and alcohol frequency were estimated using data from a longitudinal community-based participatory study of Indigenous adolescents from the upper Midwest and Canada. Joint probabilities were used to create co-use groups, and profiles were created using early adult (Mean Age – 26.28 years) outcomes. Results: Four joint trajectory groups were identified: 1) no marijuana and no/low alcohol use (34.4%), 2) mid-onset alcohol only (14%), 3) mid-onset co-use starting at age 13 (24%), and 4) early-onset co-use starting at age 11 (22%). High probabilities existed that adolescents would use marijuana early if they began drinking alcohol at the youngest ages, and that adolescents would not use marijuana if they drank infrequently or delayed drinking until mid-adolescence. Adult outcomes were poorer for the early- and mid-onset co-use groups, but there were few differences between the no/low use and alcohol-only groups. Conclusion: Co-use of marijuana and alcohol was associated with poorer outcomes in early adulthood, particularly for the group with an earlier age of onset. Abstaining from either substance in adolescence was associated with better outcomes.

Depression and substance use: The CES-D’s utility in predicting treatment outcomes in a longitudinal multi-site study of residential treatment centers

This investigation utilized a large sample of individuals undergoing substance use treatment to examine the CES-D’s structural validity and establish its predictive utility relative to treatment discharge. The sample included 5750 individuals who were receiving substance abuse treatment at 19 different residential treatment facilities. The CES-D was administered to participants over the course of their time in a residential inpatient substance use treatment program. The present study used a split sample method to conduct both exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses. Results of both the EFA and CFA indicated that the CES-D contains three first order factors measuring negative mood, positive affect, and interpersonal interactions as well as a second-order high score factor which can be used to guide interpretation and symptom monitoring. Individuals receiving residential treatment fell into one of three distinct groups based on their CES-D scores, and that their scores (and subsequent trajectories of scores over time) were differentially related to discharge status. Implications for practice and the utility of the CES-D within substance use populations are discussed.

A novel B2O3/B4C-modified composite adhesive with wide operative temperature range for alumina fiber fabric bonding

A heat resistance adhesive with wide operative temperature range for bonding alumina fiber fabric was developed by organic-inorganic modification. The polyvinyl alcohol modified by B2O3 generated a complex cross-linked network connected by B-O-C bonds, which can enhance the bonding strength of adhesive after heat-treatment from RT to 400 degrees C. Moreover, the addition of B4C can enhance the bonding strength of adhesive after heat-treatment from 400 degrees C to 800 degrees C due to the formation of molten B2O3 and borosilicate glass. Significantly, the appropriate addition of B4C can make the adhesive form a denser structure without transforming the fracture mode of the bonding joints, which is conducive to enhance the strength performance of bonding joints after sintered at 800 degrees C. On the contrary, the excessive addition of B4C will transform the fracture mode of the bonding joints into brittle fracture, which will degrade the strength performance of bonding joints.
