Tailoring Multistimuli Responsive Micropatterns Activated by Various Mechanical Modes

A versatile wrinkle-based micropatterned system with a film-substrate structure is proposed, which contains a hydrophilic film of polyvinyl alcohol or its composite with laponite and a hydrophobic substrate of polydimethylsiloxane or its composite with carbon black. The wrinkled system features high design flexibility and multistimuli responsiveness, which can be activated by various mechanical methods, including vertical press or scratch, gentle stretch-and-release, bend, or analogous magneto-mechanical and electro-mechanical modes. The resultant wrinkles possess 1) instantaneous and reversible strain/moisture/light responsive optical modulation; 2) tunable dynamics for the aforementioned strain/moisture/light response;3) tailorable amplitude/wavelength; 4) unique surface morphologies from the coupling of wrinkles and cracks; 5) excellent reversibility and durability. A variety of applications are demonstrated based on this system, including 1) a moisture erasable highly sensitive pressure responsive device and pattern replicator with a high fidelity; 2) a moisture erasable scratch/magneto-mechanical re-writable tablet; 3) an electro-mechanical controllable smart window with an ultra-sensitive strain responsive transmittance modulation and a low operating voltage; 4) various types of strain responsive, moisture erasable, and laser writable information recording/encryption devices. This work provides new routes for designing innovative wrinkled systems triggered by diverse mechanical fashions and can decode multiple environmental stimuli into optical signals for widespread application.

Highly sensitive MWCNTs/SiNWs hybrid nanostructured sensor fabricated on silicon-chip for alcohol vapors detection

The present work focuses on the fabrication of highly sensitive, stable and fast response alcohol sensor using MWCNTs/SiNWs hybrid nanostructure. Herein, vertically aligned Silicon Nanowires (SiNWs) were synthesized on Silicon (Si) chip using Metal Assisted Chemical Etching (MACE) process, which were decorated by Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) and resulted into a MWCNTs/SiNWs hybrid nanostructure. These types of MWCNTs were separately grown by using Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technique. The structural analysis and characterization of as-grown materials along with fabricated hybrid nanostructure were done by using different techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Raman spectrometer and X-Ray diffractometer. The prepared materials were observed to be dense having high yield and uniformity throughout the structure. The alcohol vapors sensing properties, such as sensitivity, selectivity, repeatability, response & recovery characteristics, of the fabricated MWCNTs/SiNWs sensor, were investigated at room temperature. The data was recorded in the form of changes in sensor response with respect to time and analyzed using the mechanism of interaction of materials with the analyte gas species. The as-fabricated sensor exhibits not only excellent response similar to 1.42 and selectivity for alcohol concentration of 1 ppm under atmospheric conditions at room temperature but also, it’s response time (3 s) and recovery time (5 s) is quite fast along with excellent reproducible nature. Most importantly, the sensor recovered to its original state without applying any external energy source. Hence, all the measured properties indicate the better operational performance of the fabricated sensor and therefore, could be suitably employed in various applications such as alcohol industries, fuel processing and other societal problems.

TEMPO-oxidized cellulose fibers from wheat straw: Effect of ultrasonic pretreatment and concentration on structure and rheological properties of suspensions

Cellulose and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose fibers (TOCF) from the wheat straw were prepared with ultrasonic and chemical treatments to investigate structure and functionalities. Sol-gel transition of TOCF suspensions has been investigated using rheology to unveil the roles of ultrasonic pretreatment and temperature at various concentration. It was found that TOCF extracted with or without ultrasonic pretreatment exhibit similar functional groups in FTIR. However, different crystal structures and thermal stabilities were revealed in XRD and TGA, respectively. The gelation was independent of the ultrasonic pretreatment, while the rheological properties were highly infuenced by the concentration and temperature of the TOCF suspensions. TOCF suspensions presented a strain thinning behavior in large amplitude oscillatory shear tests. Lissajous curves showed that the elastoplastic behavior was predominantly modulated by the fiber concentration and strain amplitude other than the ultrasonic pretreatment. These results could improve the understanding of the relationships between TOCF structure and rheological properties.

A naked-eye readout self-powered electrochemical biosensor toward indoor formaldehyde: On-site detection and exposure risk warning

The determination of indoor formaldehyde is of great importance to protect individuals against its well-known adverse impact on health. Here, we report on a design of a naked-eye readout self-powered electrochemical biosensor (SPEB) toward gaseous formaldehyde based on the efficient catalytic activity of the formaldehyde dehydrogenase/poly (methylene green)/buckypaper bioanode and the excellent electrochromic property of the Prussian blue (PB) cathode. The SPEB has a planar configuration and is covered with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as gel electrolyte to provide an inner lateral resistance large enough to enable the progressive discoloration of the patterned PB at cathode, which in turn, making the determination of gaseous formaldehyde feasible by measuring the distance consumed after 10-min exposure. The use of PVA gel electrolyte can also facilitate the observation of the color change due to its excellent transparency. The SPEB shows obvious responses to gaseous formaldehyde in a broad concentration range of 80 and 3000 ppb, covering the important permissible limits of indoor formaldehyde related to human health. The SPEB also exhibits satisfactory results in sensing gaseous formaldehyde released from the real plywood that is one of the dominating sources of the gaseous indoor formaldehyde. The results shown here demonstrate the good potential of the naked-eye readout SPEB as a fast, reliable, and portable tool for on-site determination of gaseous formaldehyde, with the appealing characteristics such as ease of operation, simplicity of configuration, and no requirement of external power sources.

Association of Opioid Use Disorder Treatment With Alcohol-Related Acute Events

Importance Persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) and co-occurring alcohol use disorder (AUD) are understudied and undertreated. It is unknown whether the use of medications to treat OUD is associated with reduced risk of alcohol-related morbidity. Objective To determine whether the use of OUD medications is associated with decreased risk for alcohol-related falls, injuries, and poisonings in persons with OUD with and without co-occurring AUD. Design, Setting, and Participants This recurrent-event, case-control, cohort study used prescription claims from IBM MarketScan insurance databases from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2016. The sample included persons aged 12 to 64 years in the US with an OUD diagnosis and taking OUD medication who had at least 1 alcohol-related admission. The unit of observation was person-day. Data analysis was performed from June 26 through September 28, 2020. Exposures Days of active OUD medication prescriptions, with either agonist (ie, buprenorphine or methadone) or antagonist (ie, oral or extended-release naltrexone) treatments compared with days without OUD prescriptions. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was admission for any acute alcohol-related event defined by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision codes. Conditional logistic regression was used to compare OUD medication use between days with and without an alcohol-related event. Stratified analyses were conducted between patients with OUD with and without a recent AUD diagnostic code. Results There were 8 424 214 person-days of observation time among 13 335 participants who received OUD medications and experienced an alcohol-related admission (mean [SD] age, 33.1 [13.1] years; 5884 female participants [44.1%]). Agonist treatments (buprenorphine and methadone) were associated with reductions in the odds of any alcohol-related acute event compared with nontreatment days, with a 43% reduction for buprenorphine (odds ratio [OR], 0.57; 95% CI, 0.52-0.61) and a 66% reduction for methadone (OR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.26-0.45). The antagonist treatment naltrexone was associated with reductions in alcohol-related acute events compared with nonmedication days, with a 37% reduction for extended-release naltrexone (OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.52-0.76) and a 16% reduction for oral naltrexone (OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.76-0.93). Naltrexone use was more prevalent among patients with OUD with recent AUD claims than their peers without AUD claims. Conclusions and Relevance These findings suggest that OUD medication is associated with fewer admissions for alcohol-related acute events in patients with OUD with co-occurring AUD.

Multivariate data-based optimization of membrane adsorption process for wastewater treatment: Multi-layer perceptron adaptive neural network versus adaptive neural fuzzy inference system

Application of machine-learning methods to assess the batch adsorption of malachite green (MG) dye on chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/zeolite imidazolate frameworks membrane adsorbents (CPZ) was investigated in this study. Our previous research results proved the suitability of the CPZ membranes for wastewater decoloring. In the current work, the residence time was combined with the other operational variables i.e., pH, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dose (AD), to obtain the possible interactions involved in nonequilibrium adsorption. Two well-known soft-computing approaches, multi-layer perceptron adaptive neural network (MLP-ANN) and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), were selected among different machine learning alternatives and then, comprehensively compared with each other considering reliability and accuracy for a 60 number of runs. The ANFIS structure with nine centers of clusters could predict the adsorption performance better than the ANN approach. Root mean square error (RMSE) and R-square were obtained 0.01822 and 0.9958 for the test data, respectively. The interpretability test resulted a linear trend predicted by the model and disclosed that the maximum value of the removal efficiency (99.5%) could be obtained when the amount of the inputs set to the upper limit. Lastly, the sensitivity analysis uncovered that the residence time has a decisive effect (relevancy factor > 80%) on the removal efficiency. According to the results, ANFIS is an effective and reliable tool to optimize and intensify the membrane adsorption process. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ecological Momentary Assessment of Alcohol Consumption and Its Concordance with Transdermal Alcohol Detection and Timeline Follow-Back Self-report Among Adults Experiencing Homelessness

Background Studies of alcohol use presume valid assessment measures. To evaluate this presumption, we examined the concordance of alcohol use as measured by ecological momentary assessment (EMA) self-reports, transdermal alcohol concentration readings via the Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor (SCRAM), and retrospective self-reports via the Timeline Follow-Back (TLFB) among adults experiencing homelessness. Methods Forty-nine adults who reported alcohol misuse (mean age = 47, SD = 9; 57% Black; 82% men) were recruited from a homeless shelter. For 4 weeks, alcohol use was assessed: (i) 5 times or more per day by EMA, (ii) every 30 minutes by a SCRAM device worn on the ankle, and (iii) by TLFB for the past month at the end of the study period. There were 1,389 days of observations of alcohol use and alcohol use intensity for 49 participants. Results EMA and SCRAM alcohol use data agreed on 73% of days, with an interrater agreement Kappa = 0.46. A multilevel analysis of concordance of 3 measures for alcohol use yielded statistically significant correlations of 0.40 (day level) and 0.63 (person level) between EMA and SCRAM. Alcohol use was detected on 49, 38, and 33% of days by EMA, SCRAM, and TLFB, respectively. For alcohol use intensity, EMA and SCRAM resulted in statistically significant correlations of 0.46 (day level) and 0.78 (person level). The concordance of TLFB with either EMA or SCRAM was weak, especially at the day level. Conclusions This is the first study to examine concordance of alcohol use estimates using EMA, SCRAM, and TLFB methods in adults experiencing homelessness. EMA is a valid approach to quantifying alcohol use, especially given its relatively low cost, low participant burden, and ease of use. Furthermore, any stigma associated with wearing the SCRAM or reporting alcohol use in person may be attenuated by using EMA, which may be appealing for use in studies of stigmatized and underserved populations.

Mesoporous ferromagnetic manganese ferrite nanoparticles for enhanced visible light mineralization of azoic dye into nontoxic by-products

In this study, a one pot facile synthesis of ferromagnetic manganese ferrite nanoparticles (MnFe2O4) was carried out using chemical co-precipitation method for mineralization of azo dye (Congo red (CR)) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The synthesized MnFe2O4 nanoparticles were highly crystalline and showed face-centred cubic (FCC) structure with average particle size of 58 +/- 4 nm. The BET analysis of the MnFe2O4 nanoparticles revealed the mesoporous distribution of material with high surface area can provide large electro active sites and short diffusion paths for the transport of ions which plays a vital role in the photocatalytic degradation of CR. The point of zero charge (pHPZC) was observed to be 6.7 indicating favourable condition for materialanionic dye interaction. The XPS studies revealed that the large amounts of oxygen vacancies were produced due to the defects in the lattice oxygen. The MnFe2O4 nanoparticlesmineralised 98.3 +/- 0.2% of 50mg/L CRwithin 30 min when tested in photocatalytic reactor under 565 nm. The particles were recoverable under the influence of an external magnet after the photocatalytic reaction and were reusable. The recovered nanoparticles showed 96% of CR degradation efficiency even after five cycles of reuse. The by-product analysis with GC-MS indicated mineralization of CR into simple alcohols and acids. The aqueous solution containing mineralised CR was nontoxic to Trigonella foenumgraecum and Vignamungo seeds and favoured increased germination, plumule and radicle length when compared to untreated CR. Towards aromatics from biomass: Prospective Life Cycle Assessment of bio-based aniline

Bio-based chemicals are seen as a potential stepping-stone towards a more sustainable chemical industry. However, while bio-based routes are already available for various organic alcohols and acids, the direct bio-based production of aromatic compounds has been difficult so far. Recently, the first bio-based process for the production of the important aromatic aniline has been realized. The process produces bio-based aniline via two-stages: first, sugar is fermented by Corynebacterium Glutamicum to aminobenzoic acid, which is then catalytically decarboxylated to aniline. In this study, we present a prospective Life Cycle Assessment for bio-based aniline production to evaluate the environmental potential compared to fossil-based aniline production. Our results suggest that the bio-based production could reduce the global warming impacts of aniline from cradle-to-grave by 35e69% relative to fossil-based production, depending on the type of biomass feedstock. However, bio-based aniline could also substantially increase eutrophication and acidification, a trade-off commonly observed for bio-based processes. Thus, the novel production route is promising and expands the scope of bio-based chemicals towards aromatics. (c) 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. A new biomimetic set -up to understand the role of the kinematic, mechanical, and surface characteristics of the tongue in food oral tribological studies

A biomimetic tribological set-up was developed to better integrate physiological characteristics in oral friction studies. Polyvinyl alcohol was used to design tongue-mimicking samples (TMSs) with controlled bulk rigidity and surface roughness. The set-up allowed normal stresses and sequences of shearing motion to be applied between a TMS and a rectangular aluminum plate mimicking the hard palate. Cottage cheese with and without suspended microcrystalline cellulose particles of two sizes (small: 15 mu m and large: 250 mu m) was used as the model food in the experiments, making it possible to introduce heterogeneities well above the perception threshold, which often get excluded in conventional tribology studies. The feasibility of the set-up was tested by measuring how friction coefficient values were affected by food properties (viscosity, particle presence), TMS properties (surface roughness, bulk rigidity), and operational parameters (normal stress, shearing velocity). The measurements with the set-up were found to be repeatable, confirming its reliability. Particle presence led to increases in friction coefficient values, while food viscosity showed less of an influence, comparatively. Increases in the surface roughness and bulk rigidity of the TMSs led to a pronounced augmentation of the friction coefficient values. The friction coefficient values showed dependence on normal stress, increase in normal stress led to significant decrease in friction. Moreover, friction notably increased between the lowest and highest shearing velocities. In conclusion, this set-up proved to be efficient and reliable in measuring friction coefficient values and variation, paving the way for a better understanding of oral tribology and its dynamic nature.
