Percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of symptomatic vertebral hemangioma with long-term follow-up

There is a paucity of literature on vertebroplasty in hemangioma. The effectiveness with short-term and long-term follow-up is an important insight for research. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and the long-term efficacy of vertebroplasty in the treatment of the patient with symptomatic vertebral hemangioma. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. The outcome was evaluated by immediate post-procedure and 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years of follow-up clinical status of the patients. The significance was determined by using a paired t-test between the pre-procedure and post-procedure severity of pain, activity score, and analgesic. The P-value < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. Results: A total of 38 vertebroplasties were performed in 34 patients. Additionally, the embolization of residual soft tissue was performed in 4 patient and Percutaneous alcohol injection for posterior elements involvement was performed in 9 patients. Immediate after the procedure, 44.12% of patients became asymptomatic, 38.23% of patients showed significant improvement, 11.77% of patients remained static and 2.94% of patients deteriorated and needed laminectomy. The complication rate was 29.4%, but only 2 patients were symptomatic and needed surgical decompression. There was significant relief of pain (P < 0.05), reduced analgesic intake (P < 0.05), and increased activity (P < 0.05) immediately after the procedure, 3 months, 1 year, and 5 years follow-up. Conclusion: PVP is an effective therapeutic option for the treatment of VH with fewer complications. The additional procedures like preprocedural embolization and percutaneous alcohol injection enhance the outcome and avoid complicated surgical interventions. Preparation and characterization of gellan gum-chitosan polyelectrolyte complex films with the incorporation of thyme essential oil nanoemulsion

Antimicrobial food packaging with a sustained release of antimicrobial agents plays a key role in maintaining food quality and food safety. In this study, polyelectrolyte gellan gum (GG)-chitosan (CS) multilayer film was fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly technology with the incorporation of thyme essential oil (TEO) coarse emulsion (TEOC) or nanoemulsion (TEON). The microstructure of GG-CS three-layered film was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The red fluorescent signals in confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images indicated smaller droplets and more uniform distribution of TEON prepared by ultrasonic treatments, which was consistent with the particle size results and porous structure in SEM images. The film incorporated with 6% TEON exhibited higher antimicrobial activity than that with 6% TEOC, and it significantly reduced E. coli populations in liquid model system. Moreover, films incorporated with TEON showed improved mechanical flexibility (elongation at break) and UV blocking property in comparison to TEOC. This developed GGCS three-layered film loading with TEON was expected to be a potential antimicrobial material with sustained release property for food packaging applications.

Fatty Acids and Flavor Components in the Oil Extracted from Golden Melon Seeds

For complete utilization of raw materials and edible oil production, the oil from golden melon seeds (GSs) is extracted via the cold-pressing, hot-pressing, and ultrasound-assisted aqueous enzymatic extraction (AEE), and the fatty acid composition, and nutritional value of the extracted GS oils (GSOs) are analyzed. The volatile compounds present in the GSOs are determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The aroma profiles of different GSO samples are further distinguished by using an electronic nose. A total of 16 fatty acids are identified in the GSO samples, with atherogenic, thrombogenic, and nutritive value indices ranging from 0.142-0.151, 0.366-0.403, and 5.019-5.299, respectively. Moreover, 43 volatile compounds, including esters, hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, pyrazines, and aldehydes are identified. The cold-pressed GSO presents fresh and fruity flavors, while the hot-pressed GSO presents roasted, nutty, fatty, and fruity flavors, and the GSO obtained via AEE presents fatty and fruity flavors. The acid and peroxide contents of these oil samples are 0.69-079 mg g(-1) and 5.17-5.79 mmol kg(-1), respectively. The results indicate that the extraction method affects the fatty acid composition, flavor components, and physiochemical properties of the GSO. This study may help promote the development of edible GSO. Practical applications: With high demand for edible oils, it is of great significance to find natural edible oils from different sources. The oil in golden melon seeds is extracted by different methods. Their fatty acid composition and flavor components are analyzed. The GSO extracted via AEE method is rich in fatty acids composition. This work would guide the development of an edible GSO and increase the value of golden melon.

The application of headspace gas chromatographic method for the determination of ethyl alcohol in craft beers, wines and soft drinks

The increasing interest of consumers in the still-developing craft beer market and the strict tax-related legal regulations concerning alcoholic beverages require precise methods for quality control. Determination of ethyl alcohol concentration was performed in 167 samples of alcoholic beverages (craft beers, soft drinks, wines, and cider). We applied headspace gas chromatography using a dual column/dual flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID/FID), a technique routinely used in forensic toxicology. The method was linear in range, from 0.01 to 20.0%, with a coefficient of determination of 0.999 (R2). The limit of quantification was 0.01%; the detection limit was 0.003%. Furthermore, very good validation parameters were achieved (precision and accuracy below 5%). The samples were analyzed for compliance with EU standards and recommendations of The Beer Judge Certification Program. Sourdough cultures as reservoirs of maltose-negative yeasts for low-alcohol beer brewing

De novo sourdough cultures were here assessed for their potential as sources of yeast strains for low-alcohol beer brewing. NGS analysis revealed an abundance of ascomycete yeasts, with some influence of grain type on fungal community composition. Ten different ascomycete yeast species were isolated from different sourdough types (including wheat, rye, and barley) and seven of these were screened for a number of brewing-relevant phenotypes. All seven were maltose-negative and produced less than 1% (v/v) alcohol from a 12 degrees Plato wort in initial fermentation trials. Strains were further screened for their bioflavouring potential (production of volatile aromas and phenolic notes, reduction of wort aldehydes), stress tolerance (temperature extremes, osmotic stress and ethanol tolerance) and flocculence. Based on these criteria, two species (Kazachstania servazzii and Pichia fermentans) were selected for 10 L-scale fermentation trials and sensory analysis of beers. The latter species was considered particularly suitable for production of low-alcohol wheat beers due to its production of the spice/clove aroma 4-vinylguaiacol, while the former showed potential for lager-style beers due to its clean flavour profile and tolerance to low temperature conditions.

Tannin-based thin-film composite membranes integrated with nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots for butanol dehydration through pervaporation

A thin-film composite membrane was prepared through the interfacial polymerization of tannic acid (TA), a natural oligomer, and acyl chloride monomers – terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) or trimesoyl chloride (TMC). Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were also prepared by loading a new class of carbon nanoparticles – nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs). The composite membranes were characterized with ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM and water contact angle. The TA-TMC membrane provided lower flux and better water permselectivity than those prepared with TA-TPC due to availability of more reactive acyl chloride. The concentrations of each reactant used, appropriate loading amount of NGQD and contact time between TA and acyl chloride monomers were all determined and investigated to separate 90/10 wt% n-butanol/water mixture at 25 degrees C. The TA-TMC was found to have higher surface hydrophilicity due to more hydroxyl groups present. The incorporation of 50 ppm NGQD during the interfacial polymerization enhanced the pervaporation performance by providing additional hydmphilicity and mass transfer resistance to larger permeating molecule. The TA(0.075)-TMC0.4-NGQD(50) membrane at 3-min contact time had a total flux of 1100 g m(-2) h(-1) and a water concentration in permeate of 97.1 wt% compared to TA(0.075)-TPC0.4-NGQD(50) membrane with 2196 g m(-2) h(-1) and 93.2 wt% in separating 90/10 wt% n-butanol/water mixture at 25 degrees C. The water permselectivity was also found to be more efficient for isobutanol/water mixtures due to the sterically hindered structure of the alcohol. Furthermore, the TA(0.075)-TMC0.4-NGQD(50) membrane was also tested to separate all butanol isomer/water mixtures at 25 degrees C showing better separation performance for sterically hindered or branched butanol isomer. The membrane fabricated herein shows the potential use of cheap and natural oligomer (TA) to produce thin-film composite membranes that provided enough barrier to separate butanol from water through pervaporation.

The interaction of exposure to adverse childhood and combat experiences on the current mental health of new post-9/11 veterans

Military veterans have greater exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) than civilians and many also encounter warfare exposures, which can increase the likelihood of mental health problems. The purpose of this study was to test an interaction between childhood traumas and warfare exposures on the mental health of a sample of nearly 10,000 new post-9/11 veterans. Results revealed that male veterans exposed to one or two ACEs, but no warfare, were more likely to experience anxiety, depression, suicidal thinking, and angry outbursts than the reference group (i.e., no ACEs and no warfare exposure). Female veterans exposed to one or two ACEs, but no warfare, were only more likely to experience suicidal thinking. Male and female veterans exposed to three or more ACEs and no warfare were more likely to experience probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, suicidality, and angry outbursts. Among those veterans who experienced corollaries of combat only (e.g., seeing someone killed or seriously wounded), male, but not female veterans were more likely to have probable PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Veterans exposed to warfare (i.e., combat and the corollaries of combat), irrespective of ACEs exposure, were the most likely to report mental health symptoms. Implications for community-based mental health services are discussed.

The isomer mixture was developed by silica gel thin layer chromatography using a 2:1 mixture of n-hexane and toluene as a developing solution to confirm that the Rf values were 0.28 (Isomer 9) and 0.36 (Isomer 10) when developed for 44 mm.

Example 5 Preparation of 1-[((1S)-endo)-(-)-bornyloxy]-5-(2-propenyl)-2-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane and separation of diastereomers (18a, 18b) 22.8 parts of ((1S)-endo)-(-)-borneol (10) was added to 35 ml of an anhydrous toluene solution containing 30 parts of 1-methoxy-5-(2-propenyl)-2-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane (16) and 30 parts of molecular-sieve 5A at room temperature. The mixture was stirred for 10 hours at 110C. In this instance, 600 parts of molecular-sieve (MS-4A) that can adsorb methanol was filled in the reflux tube to adsorb the methanol generated in the reflux tube. The reaction solution was filtrated. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 52 parts of a residue. The resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane: diethyl ether = 40: 1) to obtain the target isomer mixture. Furthermore, the resulting isomer mixture was separated into individual diastereomers represented by (18a) and (18b) (Isomer 3 and Isomer 4) by silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane: diisopropyl ether = 1: 40). Isomer 3 (diastereomer having a larger Rf) and Isomer 4 (diastereomer having a smaller Rf) were obtained respectively in an amount of 17.1 parts (yield: 38%) and 18.9 parts (yield: 42%). The properties of the diastereomers represented by (18a and 18b) are shown as follows. Then, using 1-methyl-AZADO synthesized, the activities thereof as an oxidation catalyst were estimated in the same manner using various secondary alcohols specified in Tables 2 and 3. As for the reaction conditions, the catalyst amount was 0.01 eq. in CH2Cl2, and KBr (0.1 eq.), n-Bu4NBr (0.05 eq.) and NaOCl (1.4 eq.) were further added, and the reaction was carried out under ice cooling. The reaction time was 20 minutes. After completion of the reaction, the percent yield of each product was determined. The percent yield was calculated by the formula: (actual yield, i.e., the amount of product)/(theoretical yield, i.e., calculated from the amount of consumed starting material) x 100 (%). For comparative examples, runs were carried out under the same reaction conditions using TEMPO, and each comparative yield was calculated. The results thus obtained are shown in Tables 2 and 3. On the other hand, in the case of secondary alcohols having a sterically bulky, complicated structure, it was found that the use of 1-methyl-AZADO of the invention resulted in rapid oxidation, giving target products in high yields, whereas the use of TEMPO for comparison gave target products only in low yields. In view of such results, it is evident that 1-methyl-AZADO is a catalyst useful as an oxidation catalyst not only for primary alcohols but also secondary alcohols.
