Fire hazard prevention and protection in neurosurgical operating rooms revisited: A literature review challenged by a recent incident report

We present the case of an 11 month old boy with history of sagittal synostosis who underwent a cranial vault reconstruction for repair. During the case, surgical irrigation spilled onto the plug in the operating room table, resulting in sparks and a small fire. The fire was contained and extinguished. The patient suffered no injury. We discuss previous cases of fires in neurosurgical operating rooms and identify a new source of ignition for fires. We also explore recommended best practices for fire prevention and safety to identify ways to prevent instances like this from occurring in the future.

High performance carbon nanotube/polymer composite fibers and water-driven actuators

Advanced fiber materials made from nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have stimulated extensive interest recently; polymer infiltration represents a simple and effective approach to tailor the fiber structure and improve related properties, which deserves more thorough study. Here, we adopted an acid-assisted in situ and scalable polymer infiltration method to prepare continuous CNT/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite fibers, with combined high mechanical strength (up to 2 GPa, and 1.5 GPa at a gauge length of 5 cm) and electrical conductivity (3.16 x 10(5) S/m), superior than most of previous reports. Based on these, we further fabricated uniformly twisted helical CNT/PVA fibers retaining reasonable strengths (similar to 900 MPa) yet significantly enlarging the tensile strains to as high as 95%. Using the hydrophilicity of infiltrated PVA and the designed helical fiber structure, we created water-driven actuators with axial shrinkage reaching 47% of original fiber length. Our high performance CNT/PVA fibers have potential applications in areas such as multifunctional fiber-based electronics, artificial muscles, smart textiles and soft robotics.

Structure and functionality of oat protein extracted by choline chloride-dihydric alcohol deep eutectic solvent and its water binary mixtures

This research reports an eco-friendly oat protein extraction method using choline chloride (ChCl)-butanediol deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and DES/water binary mixtures. Eighteen formulas consisting of ChCl with butanediol isomer (1,2-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, or 2, 3-butanediol) in the absence or presence of water at different molar ratio were examined for the synthesis of DESs and binary mixtures. We found that 6 formulae can be fabricated at a ChCl-butanediol molar ratio of 1:3 independent of water presence, and that they had better oat extraction performance with 90 min extraction at 80 degrees C. Under the optimal conditions, we further assessed the impact of butanediol isomers and water addition on the structure characteristics and functionalities of extracted oat protein. The results suggested that oat protein extracted by ChCl-1,4-butanediol/water binary mixture had highest protein content, solubility, foaming capacity and stability. Our pilot findings provide crucial support to our hypothesis that the isomer of hydrogen bond donor is critically involved in the properties of oat protein the DES and the binary mixtures extracted, which pave the way for the future application of DES in protein extraction.

Using surfactants for controlling rotifer contamination in mass cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Frequent microzooplankton contamination such as rotifers in Chlorella mass culture often causes devastating effects on biomass production. In this study, five surfactants were used to control contamination by a rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, in Chlorella pyrenoidosa XQ-20044 cultures. Laboratory results showed that the minimal effective concentrations of surfactants for complete control of B. calyciflorus were 7.5, 10, 10, 10, and 15 mg L-1 for primary alcohol ethoxylate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, sodium alcohol ether sulfate, coconut diethanolamide, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, respectively. However, only 10 mg L-1 sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and 7.5-10 mg L-1 primary alcohol ethoxylate had no negative effects on algal growth. Moreover, in a 5 m(2) open raceway pond, 10 mg L-1 sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate ensured swift and total elimination of rotifers, while the final dry weight of the algae reached >0.74 g L-1 whereas the cost of using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate was only $ 0.014. The results of this study indicated that sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate approach is fast-acting, highly effective, and a low-cost treatment. Therefore, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate has great potential for biological contamination control in microalgae mass culture without a negative impact on algal growth.

Self-healing and acidochromic polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel reinforced by regenerated cellulose

Recently, integration of self-healing, color-tunable, sol-gel converted properties into hydrogel has attracted interest for preparing a reinforced multifunctional hydrogel. Herein, acidochromic regenerated cellulose (ARC) was incorporated into the polyvinyl alcohol/borax (PB) matrix for constructing a tough, self-healing, multicolor and sol-gel converted smart hydrogel (PB/ARC). The mechanical properties of PB/ARC hydrogel were improved after introducing ARC, which could bear a weight of 200 g and had high maximum tensile strength (6.8 times) and compressive strength (2.3 times). PB/ARC hydrogel automatically fused within 15 s after being cut and quickly recovered to the original state after being subjected to high shear strain, showing excellent self-healing ability. The color of hydrogel could be tuned between yellow and purple by altering pH values (5-12). In addition, PB/ARC hydrogel exhibited reversible sol-gel conversion in response to the change of acidity and alkalinity. This study offers a new and facile strategy for developing multifunctional smart hydrogel.

Photo image processing analysis of electron beam irradiation on a new liquid scintillator based on alcohol

Liquid scintillator is widely used in various fields. This paper proposes a new base material, a mixture of alcohol and water for liquid scintillator and introduces photo image analysis to investigate electron beam irradiation on the new alcohol-based liquid scintillator. A possibility of using alcohol as a new detection solution in particle detector is briefly described. Alcohol has good solubility for fluor, is biodegradable and has low toxicity. The development of an alcohol-based liquid scintillator was investigated and some physical and optical properties of the alcohol-based liquid scintillator were measured. The energy exchange process that the absorption spectrum overlaps with the emission spectrum was seen in our alcohol-based liquid scintillator. To date, there have been no R&D studies elsewhere for use of alcohol-based liquid scintillator in particle detectors. As an application, we introduce a new measurement technique where range measurements were achieved after irradiating an alcohol-based liquid scintillator with electron beam energies of 6-12 MeV. By analyzing the range images taken by digital camera, or even mobile phone camera, it was possible to find out the fluor component dissolved in the alcohol-based liquid scintillator. This method has sufficient potential as it enables us to estimate wavelengths in the visible region without using an expensive spectrophotometer. These results can be used in medical imaging applications for the treatment of tumors or cancers where irradiation by electron beams takes place. Furthermore, alcohol-based LS could be used in future, next generation particle detectors.

trans-Cinnamaldehyde-doped quadripartite biopolymeric films: Rheological behavior of film-forming solutions and biofunctional performance of films

Biofunctional quadripartite films were developed by adding trans-Cinnamaldehyde (CIN) (0.4, 0.8, and 1.6% w/v) into chitosan (CH)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/fish gelatin (FG) matrices. Rheological data revealed that all solutions exhibited shear-thinning and typical entangle polymers solutions behavior. Mechanical results showed that the incorporation of CIN caused a significant increase (p < 0.05) in tensile strength, while a significant decrease was observed in elongation-at-break. With increasing CIN content, the WVP of the films, which were in the range of 0.785-0.995 g mm/kPa h m(2), increased to some extent, whereas the water solubility and water absorption were reduced up to 47 and 87%, respectively. Moreover, water contact angle analysis showed that the inclusion of CIN made the quadripartite film more hydrophobic, in which the highest value achieved was 86.6 +/- 0.75 degrees at theta(t=10). ATR/FT-IR spectroscopy demonstrated the formation of Schiff-base and intermolecular hydrogen bonds between components' functional groups, which enhanced the quadripartite films' thermal stability and mechanical properties. X-ray diffraction analysis suggested compatibility among the components, and changes of the surface of the films were confirmed by SEM and AFM analyses. Likewise, the antimicrobial activity of the CIN-loaded films were proved against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, and Escherichia coli. The quadripartite films exhibited in vitro DPPH radical scavenging activity (similar to 35.8%) and ferric reducing power at the maximum CIN testing concentration. The findings of this study proved that CIN-doped films could be used as promising inner functional packaging for food products. Color removal from model dye effluent using PVA-GA hydrogel beads

A low cost polyvinyl alcohol-glutaraldehyde cross-linked hydrogel beads were prepared and used for color removal from model industrial effluent containing Congo Red dye, using adsorption technique. The adsorption studies were performed using batch and fixed-bed reactor. Developed adsorbent, achieved adsorption capacity as high as similar to 34 mg of dye per gram of bead (condition: pH 6 and 45 degrees C). These beads were re-used for 7 times (many more runs possible) to remove the color from model dye effluent, without much loss in removal efficiency. Batch studies revealed a multi-layer adsorption governed by Harkins Jura model. Whereas the adsorption kinetics followed fractal like pseudo second order model, controlled by intraparticle diffusion phenomena. The fixed bed studies revealed steeper break through curves during adsorption operation when high dye influent rates and low bed height were used. This behaviour by the fixed bed reactor was best explained by the Thomas mathematical model. Studies further demonstrated that an external and internal mass diffusion become no more rate limiting during these experiments.
