Photocuring resins have emerged as cutting-edge technol. in coatings, adhesives, composites, additive manufacturing, and so forth. In the present work, different bisphenol, namely A, F, and S, were used to synthesize low mol. weight epoxy resin, which was further reacted with acrylic acid monomer to form bisphenol-based epoxy acrylate (BEA). The BEA resins were formulated using reactive diluents, trimethylolpropane triacrylate, and hexanediol diacrylate in the ratio of 0-40 wt% at the increment of 10 wt% alongside a fixed quantity photoinitiator. These resins were then cast into dumbbell-shaped specimens by irradiating them under UV light. The structural elucidation of BEA resins was performed using Fourier transform IR, NMR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The formulated resins were also studied for their rheol. properties. Further, the UV cured specimens were evaluated for mech., thermal, contact angle, and extent of curing. These outcomes were utilized for establishing the structure-property relationship based on the functionality, reactivity, and mol. structure of synthesized BEA resins, which controllers the design architecture and crosslinking d. of UV-cured specimens.

Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) are the major enzyme superfamily for the aldehyde metabolism Since the ALDH polymorphism leads to the accumulation of acetaldehyde, we considered that the enhancement of the liver ALDH activity by certain food ingredients could help prevent alc.-induced chronic diseases. Here, we evaluated the modulating effects of 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (OPAC), the major metabolite of quercetin glycosides, on the ALDH activity and acetaldehyde-induced cytotoxicity in the cultured cell models. OPAC significantly enhanced the total ALDH activity not only in mouse hepatoma Hepa1c1c7 cells, but also in human hepatoma HepG2 cells. OPAC significantly increased not only the nuclear level of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), but also the AhR-dependent reporter gene expression, though not the nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-dependent one. The pretreatment of OPAC at the concentration required for the ALDH upregulation completely inhibited the acetaldehyde-induced cytotoxicity. Silencing AhR impaired the resistant effect of OPAC against acetaldehyde. These results strongly suggested that OPAC protects the cells from the acetaldehyde-induced cytotoxicity, mainly through the AhR-dependent and Nrf2-independent enhancement of the total ALDH activity. Our findings suggest that OPAC has a protective potential in hepatocyte models and could offer a new preventive possibility of quercetin glycosides for targeting alc.-induced chronic diseases.

Despite tremendous progress in the field of fluorescence-based anticounterfeiting, the advanced anticounterfeiting techniques are still posing challenges all over the world due to their cost and reliability. Recently, light-emitting atomically precise nanoclusters have emerged as attractive building blocks because of their well-defined structure, function, and stable photoluminescence. Herein, we report the room temperature fabrication of a stable, flexible, nontoxic, and low-cost precision nanocluster-based luminescent ink for the stencil printing of an optically unclonable security label. Nanocluster-based printing ink shows brilliant photoluminescence owing to its extended C-H···π/π···π interactions. Spectroscopic and microscopic investigations show that intercalated nanoclusters in the printed security labels are highly stable as their optical features and mol. compositions are unaffected. The exceptional mech., thermal, photo, and aqueous stabilities of the printed security labels endorse to demonstrate the printing and smartphone-based electronic reading of the quick response code on a currency. Finally, confidential information protection and decryption under a precise window of light have been achieved by adopting the optical contrast illusion. The overall cost of the security label is found to be approx. 0.013 USD per stamp.

Little is known of the atm. fate(s) of fluorotelomer alcs. (FTOHs), a class of high-production-volume chems. used in the production of H2O- and oil-repelling surface coatings and which have been detected in a wide variety of urban and remote environmental matrixes. We studied the uptake and photochem. of FTOHs at the surface of TiO2, Fe2O3, Mauritanian sand, and Icelandic volcanic ash. Gas-phase 3,3,3-trifluoropropanol, 4:2 FTOH, and 6:2 FTOH exhibited significant uptake to each of the surfaces under study. The sand- and ash-catalyzed heterogeneous photooxidation of 6:2 FTOH resulted in the rapid production and subsequent slow degradation of surface-sorbed perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs). We suggest that this transformation, which proceeds via saturated and unsaturated fluorotelomer carboxylic acid intermediates (6:2 FTCA/FTUCA), is catalyzed by Fe and Ti contained within the samples. These results provide the 1st evidence that the heterogeneous oxidation of FTOHs at metal-rich atm. surfaces may provide a significant loss mechanism for these chems. and also act as a source of aerosol-phase PFCAs close to source regions. Subsequent long-range transport of these aerosol-sorbed PFCAs has the potential to join oceanic transport and local gas-phase FTOH oxidation as a source of PFCAs to Arctic regions.

Dodecaborate anions represent a suitable boron source for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). Sugar derivatives of dodecaborate have been prepared through the ring-opening reaction of cyclic oxonium ions by alkoxide nucleophiles. According to this general approach, a convenient and short synthesis of three derivatives of dodecaborate-sugar conjugates is herein reported. Glucose, galactose and fructose have been chosen for their expected preferential uptake by tumor cells compared to healthy cells. The free hydroxyl group of isopropylidene protected sugars was exploited as nucleophile to open a dodecaborate cyclic oxonium salt, giving products containing a spacer between the sugar and the boron cluster. Deprotection of the sugar moiety in acidic conditions gave the desired compounds in excellent yield.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are the most common cause of UTI, accounting for more than 90% infections in the normal and unobstructed urinary tracts. Multi-drug resistance (MDR) is an emerging threat to the mankind and hence, there is an urge to develop alternative therapies. Targeting quorum sensing (QS), a cell-cell communication process regulates various biofilm and virulence factors would be a most promising alternate which curbs the pathogenesis without killing the bacteria, unlike antibiotics. SdiA, a quorum regulator is well-known to control the behavioral changes of UPEC in establishing biofilm and virulence. Therefore, we have hypothesized that the SdiA-selective inhibitors derived from the plant, Melia dubia using the mol. docking would be a remarkable therapeutic candidate to down regulate the UPEC biofilm and virulence phenotypes. In this study, we have designed, synthesized and characterized the fructose-furoic acid ester by NMR and ESI-MS. In vitro studies revealed that the QSI-MD selectively inhibits UPEC adherence and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) anal. showed the effectiveness of QSI-MD to inhibit the UPEC biofilm. Genetic studies using qRT-PCR revealed the down-regulation of quorum sensing regulated genes (fimA, csgA, espA). Based on the findings, we could propose that the QSI-MD could possibly act through SdiA and show target-specific inhibition of biofilm and virulence. It is notable that more than 70 bacterial species execute their communication through the SdiA homologues (LuxIR system). Hence, the QSI-MD could be further developed as a broad-spectrum anti-infective drug.

Microbes exist in the human body provide more benefits by modulating metabolic processes, immunity, and signal transduction. However, microbial dysbiosis with harmful bacterial species can cause chronic inflammation and cancers. Hence human probiotics were recently paid more attention to immune responses, therapy, and diagnosis. Breast cancer is the second leading cancer worldwide and causes more death in women. The role of breast microbiome secondary metabolites in breast cancer is poorly studied. Research shows that breast has a specific microbiome inhabited with particular bacterial species. More significantly probiotics produced from breast microbiomes may act as a potential biomarker for breast cancer diagnosis. Hence this computational research aimed at the effect of chosen metabolites on breast cancer cell receptor G-protein-coupled bile acid receptor, Gpbar1 (TGR5). The current research suggested that cadaverine, succinate, p-cresol, and its derivatives could be used as a mol. marker in the diagnosis of breast cancer.

Objective : The aim of this work was to use the contact angle measurement in order to predict the behavior of ingredients and finished cosmetic products on skin to improve skin feel and product texture. Method : Different classes of cosmetic ingredients and formulations were evaluated. The contact angle measurements were carried out by the sessile drop method using an apparatus, designed and set up in laboratory Glass, Teflon and human skin were the reference substrates. In a preliminary phase, TEWL parameter, sebum content and hydration of human skin were measured to set up method. Results : Data demonstrated that glass substrate may be used as replacement of the skin:critical surface tension of skin and glass were about of 27 and 31 dyne cm-1, resp. Non-ionic surfactant with increasing HLB was evaluated: a correlation between contact angle measured and HLB was not observed because of different and complex mol. structure. In detail, ethylhexyl hydroxystearate (θglass = 17.1°) showed lower contact angle value with respect to Polysorbate 20 (θglass = 28.1°). Sodium laureth sulfate and stearalkonium chloride were also evaluated: anionic mol. showed more affinity for glass with respect to Teflon (θglass = 21.7° and θTeflon = 52.3°). Lipids and silicones showed different affinity for substrate according to hydrophilic groups and hydrocarbon chain: contact angles of silicones remained unchanged independently from substrate. Finished cosmetic products (O/W, W/O emulsions, cleansing oil, dry skin oil) showed different profiles according to surfactant and its affinity for continuous phase of the formulation. Comparing the values of the contact angle on skin of non-ionic surfactants, as ethylhexyl hydroxystearate and Polysorbate 20, they showed values lower (near to zero) than ones of sodium laureth sulfate and Stearalkonium Chloride (21.7° and 66.8°, resp.). Finally, finished cosmetic products tested on human skin showed different profile: corresponded contact angle values were less than 20°. The product tended to be quickly adsorbed on human skin. Conclusion : Systematic study carried out by evaluating the wettability of single cosmetic ingredients on different substrates allowed to find correlations between the use of certain ingredients and the final performance of a cosmetic product.

Because of its complexity, selective conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into platform chems. presents significant challenges. Herein, we converted birch wood into high-yield lignin-derived phenolic monomers and dimers and holocellulose-derived polyols and monocarboxylic acids via a two-step cascade reaction using 0.1 wt% Pd on N-doped carbon (Pd0.1/CNx) and passivated alumina-coated Ni on activated carbon (Ni2 @Al2O3/AC) catalysts. The catalytic fractionation of birch sawdust using Pd0.1/CNx produced 11.1 wt% monomers, 5.6% dimers, and 63.4 wt% pulp-rich solid (PRS) based on feed weight The subsequent conversion of PRS over passivated Ni2 @Al2O3/AC produced 21.6 wt% C2-C6 polyols and 7.9 wt% monocarboxylic acids. After the whole biomass conversion reaction, the Pd0.1/CNx and Ni2 @Al2O3/AC catalysts were separated using their different magnetic responses and reused three times without activity loss. The structure-performance relationships of the Pd0.1/CNx catalysts synthesized using different methods and effect of passivation on the performance of the Ni2 @Al2O3/AC catalyst were analyzed.
