Two new unimol. azocarbazole-based visible photobase generators (Ac-C-Base) with different strong bases such as 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) as the potential active species were prepared Their structures were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HR-MS. According to the photolysis and EPR results, Ac-C-Base could generate free radicals and strong bases simultaneously through the photodecarboxylation mechanism under 455 nm LED irradiation Thus they can effectively catalyze the thiol-epoxy polymerization without post exposure baking under light exposure. In addition, the Ac-C-TBD containing a stronger base shows a faster polymerization rate and higher epoxy conversion.

Shin, Jaeman J. published the artcileEffect of site-specific functionalization on the shape of nonspherical block copolymer particles, Synthetic Route of 7575-23-7, the main research area is nonspherical butadiene styrene diblock copolymer particle functionalization shape; block copolymer; particle shape; site-specific functionalization; thiol-ene.

Shape-anisotropic polymeric colloids having chem. distinct compartments are promising materials, however, introducing site-sp. surface functionality to block copolymer particles has not yet been actively investigated. The current contribution demonstrates the selective surface functionalization of nanostructured, ellipsoidal polystyrene-b-polybutadiene (PS-b-PB) particle and investigate their effects on the particle shape. Photo-induced thiol-ene click reaction was used as a selective functionalization chem. for modifying the PB block, which was achieved by controlling the feed ratio of functional thiols to the double bonds in PB. Importantly, the controlled particle elongation was observed as a function of the degree of PB functionalization. Such an increase in the aspect ratio is attributed to the (i) increased incompatibility of the PS and modified PB block and (ii) the reduced surface tension between the particles and surrounding aqueous medium, both of which contributes to the further elongation of ellipsoids. Further tunability of the elongation behavior of ellipsoids was further demonstrated by controlling the particle size and chem. structure of functional thiols, showing the versatility of this approach for controlling the particle shape. Finally, the utility of surface functionality was demonstrated by the facile complexation of fluorescent dye on the modified surface of the particle via favorable interaction, which showed stable fluorescence and colloidal dispersity.

Click chem. is an effective tool to fabricate three-dimensional gel network in an accurate way. In this work, Pluronic F127 gels are prepared by thiol-ene click chem., utilizing double-bond end-capped Pluronic F127 (F127DA) and pentaerythritol tetras-mercaptopropionate (PETMP) as the starting materials and triethylamine as the catalyst. Both the mass fraction of F127DA and the initial concentration of PETMP have effects on the properties of the resulting F127 gels. The optimized F127 gel prepared under a F127DA mass fraction of 15 wt% and a PETMP concentration of 17.62 mmol/L exhibits the highest swelling ratio (10) and has the largest elongation at break (194%). When the F127DA mass fraction and PETMP concentration are fixed at 15 wt% and 48.26 mmol/L, resp., the resulting F127 gel has a high stress of 0.25 MPa. The present example has presented a method to fabricate three-dimensional gel network in a controlled way.

Tian, Guangming published the artcilePhotodirected 2D-to-3D morphing structures of shape memory polycaprolactone/W18O49 nanowires composite film, Application of Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is tungsten oxide polycaprolactone composite film photodirected shape memory effect.

Shape memory materials possess programmable complex and large deformations toward external stimuli, which are particularly essential for their potential applications. For the transformation of planar two-dimensional (2D) structures into complex 3D structures, the design of asym. or bilayer thin sheets is usually required. In this paper, we propose a facile strategy to achieve these complex 3D structures that can be transformed to various pre-determined shapes sequentially by laser-triggered site-specific deformations. The response of shape memory polycaprolactone (PCL) to laser is realized by phys. doping W18O49 nanowires into the cross-linked PCL diacrylate matrix. When irradiated by 98 mW cm-2 laser, the pre-stretched PCL/W18O49 film shows an out-of-plane bending deformation due to the temperature gradient and single-domain orientation on the thickness between the upper layer and lower layer. The bending rates and amplitudes of the film can be tailored by adjusting the parameters of irradiation time, the film thickness as well as the pre-stretch strain. Remarkably, the pre-stretched film can automatically bend in more intricate complex deformations by integration with kirigami cuts in planar. Finally, we demonstrate that by activating the dynamic transesterification reaction within the same film, it can also achieve the 2D-to-3D transformations. With these decent features, this kind of novel PCL//W18O49 film shows great potential in the field of biomedical devices or soft robotics.

Gablier, Alexandra published the artcileTransesterification in Epoxy-Thiol Exchangeable Liquid Crystalline Elastomers, Safety of Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is transesterification epoxy thiol exchangeable liquid crystalline elastomer.

The incorporation of vitrimer bond-exchange chem. into liquid crystalline elastomer networks produces “”exchangeable liquid crystal elastomers”” (xLCE). These materials offer a facile method of material reshaping and alignment post-polymerization via the application of a mech. stress above the temperature of activation of bond exchange. We use diepoxy mesogenic monomers with thiol-terminated spacers and crosslinker to investigate a range of resulting xLCE. The “”click”” chem. of thiols results in good control over the network topol. and low glass transition in this family of materials. By combining different spacers, we were able to obtain smectic and nematic phases and adjust the liquid crystal to the isotropic phase transition between 42 and 140°C, while the elastic-plastic transition temperature was maintained close to 200°C. The broad gap between these temperatures ensures that thermally actuating uniformly aligned elastomers are stable and show no residual plastic creep, making epoxy-thiol xLCE promising for a range of engineering applications.

Electrospinning has been used to create scaffolds with tunable micro/nano architecture, stiffness, and porosity to mimic native extracellular matrix. This study investigated the effects of electrospinning parameters and hydrogel formulation (solvent and crosslinker type) on the architecture and properties of fibrous poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels formed from a photoclick thiol-norbornene reaction. Fibrous hydrogels were prepared using hydrogel precursors (four-arm PEG norbornene and multi-thiol crosslinker), sacrificial poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, 400 kDa), and photoinitiator (I2959) in either 2,2-triflouroethanol (TFE) or water. Three thiol crosslinkers- 2,2′-(ethylenedioxy)diethanethiol (EDT), pentaerythritol tetrakis(3mercaptopropionate) (PTMP), and PEG dithiol (PEGDT)- were investigated. Fibrous PEG networks with uniform fibers were produced at applied voltages of 10 or 12 kV for TFE and 16 kV for water. Fiber diameters of electrospun hydrogels were largely affected by the solvent when combined with PEO concentration and ranged from 0.5 to 3.5 mm in dry state. While the effect of crosslinker type on fiber diameter, morphol., and porosity of the fibrous hydrogel was minimal, it did modulate its shear modulus. To this end, this study provides the groundwork for selecting processing parameters to achieve desired properties of fibrous PEG thiol-norbornene hydrogels for intended tissue engineering applications ranging from neural, cardiovascular to musculoskeletal.
