Cheers together, but not alone: Peer drinking moderates alcohol consumption following interpersonal stress

In view of the importance of the need to belong in motivating behavior, we examined whether interpersonal and academic stress differentially influence social and solitary alcohol consumption and whether social and solitary alcohol consumption differentially predict next-day interpersonal and academic stress. Based on research suggesting that drinking with friends is related to increased alcohol consumption following belongingness threat, we also examined whether peer consumption moderates associations between daily interpersonal stress and social drinking. Each day for 30 days, 1641 undergraduates reported stress, alcohol consumption, and peer consumption. Academic stress was related to lower levels of social and solitary alcohol consumption. Interpersonal stress was associated with greater social alcohol consumption, but only when students reported being around others who were drinking greater than average peer quantities. However, although social drinking was related to lower next-day academic stress, it was unrelated to next-day interpersonal stress. Findings are consistent with the notion that individuals’ perceptions of peers’ alcohol use might serve as a signal to join in this behavior to reduce belongingness threats associated with interpersonal stressors, although this may not be an effective strategy.

Fingerprint of aroma-active compounds and odor activity values in a traditional Moroccan fermented butter Smen using GC-MS-Olfactometry

Smen is a fermented Moroccan butter highly regarded for its unique flavor characteristics. For the first time, this study aimed to evaluate the suitability and complementary performance of purge-and-trap extraction (PTE) and solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) extraction methods prior to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O) in order to characterize key compounds in Smen. According to the representativeness tests, both SAFE and PTE aromatic extracts gave satisfactory similarity and intensity scores and were representative aromatic extracts, being similar to the Smen reference odor. Thirty-four volatile compounds were identified in Smen including acids, alcohols, esters, and ketones. Aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) was applied to characterize potent odorants, and odor activity values (OAVs) were calculated to authenticate these compounds. Twenty-two and nineteen aroma-active compounds were revealed by SAFE and PTE methods, respectively, with flavor dilution (FD) factors ranging from 4 to 4096, and OAVs between 1 and 3359. Ethyl butanoate, ethyl lactate, ethyl hexanoate, butanoic acid, and hexanoic acid were the main potent odorants in Smen, producing fruity-rose, creamy-whey, overripe fruit, ripened cheese, and rancid buttery/soapy odors, respectively. Therefore, SAFE and PTE methods were not only representative, but also complementary for elucidating potent aroma compounds of Smen.

The expression profiles of acid-stable alpha-amylase and acid-labile alpha-amylase of Aspergillus luchuensis mut. Kawachii effect on the microstructure of koji and alcohol fermentation

We investigated the contribution of the complex expressions of two alpha-amylases, namely acid-stable alpha-amylase (AS-amylase) and acid-labile alpha-amylase (AL-amylase), from Aspergillus kawachii to the microstructure of koji and the brewing. AL-amylase was found to be the primary contributor to the decomposition of starch in the early stage of koji making. From the middle stage, both alpha-amylases decomposed the starch in a coordinated manner, and at the final stage, acid-stable alpha-amylase and glucoamylase decomposed the starch granules. Characterization of koji prepared by the single disruptions of AS-amylase or AL-amylase genes, double disruption of both alpha-amylase genes, and triple disruption of two alpha-amylase and glucoamylase genes in A. kawachii cells indicated that both alpha-amylases can work in a synergistic manner to decompose starches during koji making. AL-amylase was found, for the first time, to play an important role in starch decomposition in koji. The speed of alcohol fermentation and ester contents of the fermented mash were higher the mash prepared the control strain, followed by single, double, and triple disruptants. These results indicate that the microstructure of koji plays a role in promoting alcohol fermentation and flavor development.

Sirtuin 6 ameliorates alcohol-induced liver injury by reducing endoplasmic reticulum stress in mice

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) occurs as a result of chronic and excessive alcohol consumption. It encompasses a wide spectrum of chronic liver abnormalities that range from steatosis to alcoholic hepatitis, progressive fibrosis and cirrhosis. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress induced by ethanol metabolism in hepatocytes has been established as an important contributor to the pathogenesis of ALD. However, whether SIRT6 exerts regulatory effects on ethanol-induced ER stress and contributes to the pathogenesis of ALD is unclear. In this study, we developed and characterized Sirt6 hepatocyte-specific knockout and transgenic mouse models that were treated with chronic-plus-binge ethanol feeding. We observed that hepatic Sirt6 deficiency led to exacerbated ethanol-induced liver injury and aggravated hepatic ER stress. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) treatment remarkably attenuated ethanol-induced ER stress and ameliorated ALD pathologies caused by Sirt6 ablation. Reciprocally, SIRT6 hepatocyte-specific transgenic mice exhibited reduced ER stress and ameliorated liver injury caused by ethanol exposure. Consistently, knockdown of Sirt6 elevated the expression of ER stress related genes in primary hepatocytes treated with ethanol, whereas overexpression of SIRT6 reduced their expression, indicating SIRT6 regulates ethanol-induced hepatic ER stress in a cell autonomous manner. Collectively, our results suggest that SIRT6 is a positive regulator of ethanol-induced ER stress in the liver and protects against ALD by relieving ER stress. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. A naked-eye readout self-powered electrochemical biosensor toward indoor formaldehyde: On-site detection and exposure risk warning

The determination of indoor formaldehyde is of great importance to protect individuals against its well-known adverse impact on health. Here, we report on a design of a naked-eye readout self-powered electrochemical biosensor (SPEB) toward gaseous formaldehyde based on the efficient catalytic activity of the formaldehyde dehydrogenase/poly (methylene green)/buckypaper bioanode and the excellent electrochromic property of the Prussian blue (PB) cathode. The SPEB has a planar configuration and is covered with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as gel electrolyte to provide an inner lateral resistance large enough to enable the progressive discoloration of the patterned PB at cathode, which in turn, making the determination of gaseous formaldehyde feasible by measuring the distance consumed after 10-min exposure. The use of PVA gel electrolyte can also facilitate the observation of the color change due to its excellent transparency. The SPEB shows obvious responses to gaseous formaldehyde in a broad concentration range of 80 and 3000 ppb, covering the important permissible limits of indoor formaldehyde related to human health. The SPEB also exhibits satisfactory results in sensing gaseous formaldehyde released from the real plywood that is one of the dominating sources of the gaseous indoor formaldehyde. The results shown here demonstrate the good potential of the naked-eye readout SPEB as a fast, reliable, and portable tool for on-site determination of gaseous formaldehyde, with the appealing characteristics such as ease of operation, simplicity of configuration, and no requirement of external power sources.

Exposure to light at night (LAN) and risk of breast cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: With the unprecedented urbanization light pollution has emerged as a ubiquitous problem, and there has been accumulating evidence on the links between exposure to light at night (LAN) and breast cancer risk. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on the associations between LAN exposure and breast cancer risk. Methods: We included all observational human studies wherein the exposure variable was LAN measured in indoor and outdoor environments, and the outcomewas breast cancer. Weemployed summary relative risks (SRR) for breast cancer by comparing highest versus lowest categories of LAN exposure within a random-effectsmodel. The National Toxicology Program’s (NTP) Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) risk of bias rating toolwas adopted to assess the risk of bias in individual studies and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) guideline was employed to assess confidence in the body of evidence. Results: A total 14 studies comprising four cohorts (13,155 cases among 372,802 exposed subjects), nine casecontrol and one case-referent studies of female subjects (39,462 cases and 20,739 controls) across seven countries and published between 2001 and 20 were included for review. Participants in the highest LAN exposure category were associated with higher risk of breast cancer in reference to those in the lowest (SRR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.06-1.18; I-2=39% for outdoor LAN, and SRR: 1.13; 95%CI: 1.05-1.21; I-2=19% for indoor LAN). Pooled evidence identified relatively pronounced association of outdoor LAN exposure and breast cancer amongwomen with estrogen receptor positive (ER+) tumor (SRR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.04-1.40) and premenopausal status (SRR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.06-1.37). The final rate of confidence in the body of evidence generated was graded as `moderate’ based on GRADE guideline. Discussion: LAN exposure was consistently associated with higher breast cancer risk corroborating NTP’s recommendations which anticipates excessive LAN as human carcinogen. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Cannabis use disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder: The prevalence of comorbidity in veterans of recent conflicts

Aims: Veterans have high rates of cannabis use, and rates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) are rising among this population. These rising rates are particularly true for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is common among veterans of recent conflicts, Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND). Although prior work has documented links between PTSD and cannabis use, a better understanding of the intersection among CUD, PTSD, and other disorders in real-world clinical practice can inform prevention and treatment efforts. This study examined the prevalence and comorbidities of CUD and PTSD in OFE/OIF/OND veterans. Method: The study analyzed data from the Veterans Affairs Corporate Data Warehouse (2010-2016) for returning war veterans who were diagnosed with CUD (N = 46,268). The study determined prevalence of PTSD, and examined additional differences in comorbidities. Results: The prevalence of a comorbid PTSD diagnosis among OEF/OIF/OND veterans with a CUD diagnosis was 72.3%. Further analysis revealed additional co-occurring disorders. Veterans with a diagnosis of CUD and PTSD were more likely to have a comorbid diagnosis of depression (odds ratio, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.62-1.71), panic disorder (odds ratio; 1.58; 95% CI, 1.43-1.75), alcohol use disorder (odds ratio; 1.30; 95% CI, 1.24-1.35), opioid use disorder (odds ratio; 1.52; 95% CI, 1.43-1.62), and insomnia (odds ratio; 1.74; 95% CI, 1.65-1.84) than veterans without a PTSD diagnosis. Conclusions: Findings highlight that the majority of returning war veterans with CUD are highly complex. Our findings substantiate the need for urgent, comprehensive care for veterans with co-occurring CUD and PTSD, including integrated and transdiagnostic treatment approaches.

Effect of Mouthrinses on Water Sorption and Solubility of Flouride-Releasing Restorative Materials

Objective: This study aimed to investigate water sorption/solubility behavior of glass ionomer cement-based-containing restorative materials. Methods: A total of 21 specimens for each material (Riva Self Cure. Riva Light Cure, GCP Glass Fill) were prepared using a teflon ring (10×2 mm). These specimens were stored in a desiccator for 24 hours at 37 +/- 1 degrees C and the weight of each sample was measured using a sensitive balance. Afterwards, the specimens were stored in an incubator containing distilled water, mouthrinse with alcohol, and mouthrinse without alcohol at 37 +/- 1 degrees C for one day. The specimens were later dried to a constant mass in a desiccator, and each specimen was measured using a digital electronic caliper. Data were statistically analyzed (p<0.05). Results: Data were evaluated using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests. Water sorption values were found to be significantly higher for the resin-modified glass ionomer cement group than for the high-viscosity glass ionomcr cement (HVGIC) group in all the three different media (p<0.05). HVGIC material showed similar water sorption values for all three media. Conclusion: Compositions of restorative materials play key roles in their water sorption/solubility in different areas. Societal development and the alcohol-attributable burden of disease

AimThis study aimed to examine if there is an interaction between alcohol use and human development in terms of their associations with alcohol-attributable health harms. DesignStatistical modelling of global country- and region-specific data from 2016. SettingGlobal. Participants/CasesThe units of the analyses were countries (n = 180) and regions (n = 4) based on their Human Development Index (HDI). MeasurementsAlcohol-attributable harms [deaths, years of life lost (YLL), years lived with disability (YLD) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost] and risk relations were based on a recent study using World Health Organization (WHO) estimates for 2016. Human development was measured using the HDI, a summary score of life expectancy, education and gross national income from the United Nations Development Programme. Interactions between HDI and adult per-capita consumption (APC) affecting alcohol-attributable harms were assessed using likelihood ratio tests. Differences in alcohol-attributable harms per litre of APC between HDI groups were assessed using regression analyses and a reference group of low HDI. FindingsAPC is associated with alcohol-attributable deaths, YLL, YLDs and DALYs lost, while HDI is associated with alcohol-attributable deaths, YLL and DALYs lost. Statistical analyses indicated there is an interaction between HDI and APC in their associations with alcohol-attributable deaths, YLL and DALYs lost per 100000 people. The alcohol-attributable burden was highest in low HDI countries, with 11.65 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 10.75, 12.40] deaths and 495.61 (95% CI = 461.83, 569.23) DALYs lost per 100000 people per litre of APC, and lowest in very high HDI countries, with 4.15 (95% CI = 2.46, 5.71) deaths and 200.31 (95% CI = 122.78, 265.10) DALYs lost per 100000 people per litre of APC. However, no statistical differences between low and very high HDI groupings for these burdens were observed. ConclusionsThere appears to be an interaction between the Human Development Index and alcohol use in their associations with alcohol-attributable deaths, years of life lost and disability-adjusted life years lost but not with alcohol-attributable years lived with disability. Alcohol appears to have a stronger harmful impact per litre of alcohol consumed in lesser developed countries than in developed countries.

Trait impulsivity and health risk behaviors: A latent profile analysis

Substance use and risky sexual behavior are negative health outcomes associated with the heterogeneous construct of impulsivity and emerging adulthood. The present study appears to be the first to examine how different facets of impulsive personality may be used to depict various profiles that differentially predict engagement in substance use and risky sexual behavior. Specifically, this study extends previous research by providing a comprehensive examination of impulsivity profiles in relation to various health risk outcomes via negative urgency, lack of premeditation, lack of perseverance, sensation seeking, and positive urgency. Participants (N = 599) completed the Short Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation Seeking, and Positive Urgency Scale (SUPPS-P), the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), and the Student Sexual Risks Scale (SSRS). Impulsivity profiles were examined using latent profile analysis in which varying degrees of the SUPPS-P facets were grouped together based on participant response patterns. Results of latent profile analyses indicated an optimal 5-profile solution (low total impulsivity, moderate total impulsivity, high lack of premeditation/lack of perseverance facets, moderate positive urgency/negative urgency/sensation seeking facets, high positive urgency/negative urgency/sensation seeking facets).
