A novel fire-preventing triple-network (TN) hydrogel was prepared and laminated on cotton fabric to improve fire-resistant performance of cellulose fabric. The TN hydrogel composed of Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)/sodium alginate (SA)/ Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) exhibited excellent swelling ratio, swelling-deswelling behavior and antibacterial property. Results indicated that introduction of SA could improve water retention capabilities of TN hydrogels. Thermogravimetric experiments showed that the thermal stability of hydmgels was best at a SA: PVA ratio of 2:1. Furthermore, the obtained hydrogel-cotton fabric laminates displayed efficient flame retardancy. Compared to original fabric, hydrogel-fabric laminates were nearly undamaged when exposed to fire for 12 s. This result is attributed to energy absorption as water is heated and evaporates in the hydrogel. The present work provides a new concept to prepare fire-resistant polymer fabric, which may be used in fire-protective clothing to protect the skin from burn injuries.

In recent years, many studies have been conducted on the production of edible films from emerging gums, which are mostly made from botanical sources. However, each one interacts differently with the film compounds, producing films with different properties that may improve or hinder their utilization in food packaging. Therefore, the aim of this review was to investigate and compare the physical, mechanical, thermal and structural properties of edible films produced with these emerging gums. The results of this review showed that it is possible to produce edible films with desirable physical, mechanical and thermal properties by optimizing the amounts and type of compounds in film formulations such as plasticizers, nanoparticles, lipid compounds, crosslinkers and combination of gums with other biopolymers. The future trends of this research include the deepening of knowledge to understand the molecular structures of emerging gums and to address the shortcomings of films based on these gums for their industrial-scale application in food packaging.

In contrast to yeast biofilms, those of filamentous fungi are relatively poorly understood, in particular with respect to their regulation. Cunninghamella elegans is a filamentous fungus that is of biotechnological interest as it catabolises drugs and other xenobiotics in an analogous manner to animals; furthermore, it can grow as a biofilm enabling repeated batch biotransformations. Precisely how the fungus switches from planktonic to biofilm growth is unknown and the aim of this study was to shed light on the possible mechanism of biofilm regulation. In dimorphic yeasts, alcohols such as tyrosol and 2-phenylethanol are known to control the yeast-to-hypha switch, and a similar molecule might be involved in regulating biofilm in C. elegans. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of crude ethyl acetate extracts from supernatants of 72 h planktonic and biofilm cultures revealed 3hydroxytyrosol as a prominent metabolite. Further quantification revealed that the amounts of the compound in planktonic cultures were substantially higher (>10-fold) than in biofilm cultures. In the presence of exogenous 3-hydroxytyrosol the growth of aerial mycelium was inhibited, and there was selective inhibition of biofilm when it was added to culture medium. There was no biotransformation of the compound when it was added to 72 h-old cultures, in contrast to the related compounds tyrosol and 2-phenylethanol, which were oxidised to a number of products. Therefore, we propose that 3hydroxytyrosol is a new signalling molecule in fungi, which regulates biofilm growth. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Reactions catalyzed within inorganic and organic materials and at electrochemical interfaces commonly occur at high coverage and in condensed media, causing turnover rates to depend strongly on interfacial structure and composition, 112-60-7, Name is 2,2′-((Oxybis(ethane-2,1-diyl))bis(oxy))diethanol, SMILES is OCCOCCOCCOCCO, in an article , author is Hill, Melanie L., once mentioned of 112-60-7, Category: alcohols-buliding-blocks.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and cannabis use disorder (CUD) are each associated with increased suicidal behavior, but it is unclear how their comorbidity relates to suicide risk. Understanding these associations in U.S. military veterans is especially important, given their heightened risk for suicide, high prevalence of AUD, and increasing access to cannabis. We compared associations of probable AUD, CUD, and AUD/CUD with suicide ideation, plan(s), and attempt(s) in a nationally representative sample of 4,069 veterans surveyed in 2019-2020 as part of the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study. Among veterans who screened positive for current AUD, 8.7% also screened positive for current CUD. Among veterans who screened positive for current CUD, 33.3% screened positive for current AUD. Current and lifetime positive screens for AUD, CUD, and AUD/ CUD were each strongly and independently associated with past-year suicide ideation and lifetime suicide ideation, plan(s), and attempt(s) [odds ratios (ORs) = 1.6-8.7]. Relative to veterans who screened positive for AUD only, veterans who screened positive for AUD/CUD and CUD only had higher odds of past-year suicide ideation (AUD/CUD: OR = 3.3; CUD only: OR = 2.4), lifetime suicide ideation (AUD/CUD: OR = 1.9; CUD only: OR = 2.6) and lifetime suicide plan(s) (AUD/CUD: OR = 1.7; CUD only: OR = 6.1). Collectively, findings suggest that screening positive for CUD might be an especially strong indicator of suicide ideation and planning in veterans with and without AUD, independent of sociodemographic, military, trauma, and other psychiatric factors. These findings underscore the importance of routine screening for CUD in suicide prevention efforts, especially as cannabis becomes more widely available.

Objectives: People with alcohol use disorders (AUD) are at a higher risk for physical co-morbidities. Consequently, their daily life functioning needs to be reliably assessed and followed-up. We examined the reliability of the 6-min walk test (6MWT) in a cohort of inpatients with AUD. Secondary aims were to assess minimal detectable changes (MDC95), practice effects and associations of the 6MWT with demographical and clinical variables. Methods: Two 6MWTs were administered within 3 days to 45 (32.) inpatients with a DSM-5 diagnosis of AUD. Physical complaints before and after the 6MWT were recorded. Patients performed a standing broad jump to assess muscle strength and completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Results: Patients walked 636.3 +/- 82.3 meters and 638.1 +/- 77.6 meters at the first and second test. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.94 (95% confidence interval 0.90-0.97). The MDC95 was 15 meters for men and 9 meters for women. No practice effect was detected. The presence of feet or ankle problems or pain before the test, dyspnea after the test, impaired muscle strength and lower PANAS positive affect scores were independently related to shorter 6MWT distance accounting for 67.3% of the variance. Conclusion: The 6MWT is a reliable tool for evaluating the functional exercise capacity in inpatients with AUD. Health care professionals should consider musculoskeletal and respiratory symptoms when interpreting fitness test outcomes in this vulnerable population.

Since decades, the plant bioactives have shown tremendous promise in the therapeutic management of cancer. Lately, many synthetic drugs and natural bioactive molecules have been used in combination for potential synergism in cancer therapeutics. Sorafenib (SFN) and chrysin (CHR) form one of such promising combinations with definitive synergistic potential in cancer therapy. This has, however, given rise to analytical challenges, as it becomes quite difficult to identify and quantify two or more active moieties simultaneously in the presence of each other. Herein, we report the development and validation of an HPTLC densitometric method for analysis of SFN and CHR, in combination, followed by studying the effect of biological matrix (i.e., plasma), on the assay of both the molecules. Solvent system, comprising of toluene: n-hexane: isopropyl alcohol (7:2:1), was employed for chromatographic separation with Rf values of 0.3 and 0.5, for SFN and CHR, respectively. Validation studies established linearity for the concentrations ranging from 20 to 800 ng/band for each of the molecules, along with high degree of accuracy, precision (intraand inter-day), ruggedness, robustness, and sensitivity of the liquid chromatographic method. Specificity studies using plasma as the biological matrix, exhibited well-resolved peaks of both the molecules, coupled with high recovery values too. The aforesaid method was finally applied to the estimation of real plasma levels in Wistar rats, following co-administration of SFN and CHR as a suspension. In a nutshell, the validated analytical method can be productively applied for simultaneous estimation of SFN and CHR, for routine analysis, in drug formulations and in biological matrices like plasma.

Accessible summary What is known on the subject? Relapse rates are high among patients who have experienced first-episode psychosis (FEP). Psychotic relapses are associated with worse quality of life and poorer functionality of the FEP patient. The use of psychoactive substances, non-adherence to drug treatment, and high expressed emotion (EE) are notable predictors of relapse after the FEP. Although some studies have suggested that psychotic relapse may be associated with a family environment with high levels of emotional over-involvement (EOI), this finding is still inconsistent across different cultures. EE specific components must be evaluated and interpreted according to the context of cultural norms. There is a scarcity of studies on the role of depression in the occurrence of relapses after the FEP, and the results remain uncertain. What the paper adds to existing knowledge? This study explored the predictors of psychotic relapses in Brazilian patients who experienced FEP. Our results indicate that 29.2% of the patients relapsed after the FEP. Patients diagnosed with depression and high-EOI in the family environment were predictors of psychotic relapses in this population. This study expands knowledge about the cultural specificity of EOI and the role of depression in psychotic relapse. What are the implications for practice? Nursing professionals must consider the implications of the family environment and depression in the course of psychosis. Family interventions and the appropriate treatment of depression are important for improving the prognosis of FEP patients. Introduction Psychotic relapse may be associated with relatives’ high emotional over-involvement (EOI) and with a diagnosis of major depressive episode (MDE) among first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients, but the results are still inconsistent across different cultures. Aim Evaluate the predictors of relapse in FEP patients. Method Prospective cohort study with 6-month follow-up conducted with 65 dyads of patients and relatives from an early intervention unit in Brazil. At the baseline interview, relatives answered to a sociodemographic data form and to the Family Questionnaire. Patients provided sociodemographic and clinical data and answered the Measurement of Treatment Adherence; the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test; the Severity of Dependence Scale to assess cannabis dependence, and the MDE module of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Psychotic relapses were evaluated using items from the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. The data were analysed using multiple logistic regression. Results 29.2% of the patients presented at least one psychotic relapse. High-EOI and MDE were predictors of psychotic relapses. Discussion Our findings expand the knowledge about the cultural specificity of EOI and the role of depression in psychotic relapse. Implications for practice Family nursing interventions and the appropriate treatment of MDE must be considered in the care of FEP patients.

A low cost polyvinyl alcohol-glutaraldehyde cross-linked hydrogel beads were prepared and used for color removal from model industrial effluent containing Congo Red dye, using adsorption technique. The adsorption studies were performed using batch and fixed-bed reactor. Developed adsorbent, achieved adsorption capacity as high as similar to 34 mg of dye per gram of bead (condition: pH 6 and 45 degrees C). These beads were re-used for 7 times (many more runs possible) to remove the color from model dye effluent, without much loss in removal efficiency. Batch studies revealed a multi-layer adsorption governed by Harkins Jura model. Whereas the adsorption kinetics followed fractal like pseudo second order model, controlled by intraparticle diffusion phenomena. The fixed bed studies revealed steeper break through curves during adsorption operation when high dye influent rates and low bed height were used. This behaviour by the fixed bed reactor was best explained by the Thomas mathematical model. Studies further demonstrated that an external and internal mass diffusion become no more rate limiting during these experiments.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is one of the foremost public health problems. Alcohol is also frequently co-abused with cocaine. There is a huge unmet need for the treatment of AUD and/or cocaine co-abuse. We recently demonstrated that skin grafts generated from mouse epidermal stem cells that had been engineered by CRISPR-mediated genome editing could be transplanted onto mice as a gene delivery platform. Here, we show that expression of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) gene delivered by epidermal stem cells attenuated development and reinstatement of alcohol-induced drug-taking and seeking as well as voluntary oral alcohol consumption. GLP1 derived from the skin grafts decreased alcohol-induced increase in dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens. In exploring the potential of this platform in reducing concurrent use of drugs, we developed a novel co-grafting procedure for both modified human butyrylcholinesterase (hBChE)- and GLP1-expressing cells. Epidermal stem cell-derived hBChE and GLP1 reduced acquisition of drug-taking and toxicity induced by alcohol and cocaine co-administration. These results imply that cutaneous gene delivery through skin transplants may add a new option to treat drug abuse and co-abuse.

Edible seaweeds Chondrus crispus, Codium fragile, Himanthalia elongata, Ulva lactuca and Undaria pinnatifida, without any treatment (control seaweeds), were stored at 4 degrees C for 15, 30, 60, 15 and 30 days, respectively, until microbial counts exceeded 7 log cfu/g. High pressure processed (HPP) seaweeds, treated at 400 or 600 MPa for 5 min on day 2 after collection, were held at 4 degrees C until day 180. At the start of storage, 133 volatile compounds were detected in control seaweeds, with 89, 31, 45, 79 and 69 compounds found in C. crispus, C. fragile, H. elongata, U. lactuca and U. pinnatifida, respectively. Chemical groups including the highest number of compounds were aldehydes (24), alcohols (23), ketones (18), hydrocarbons (17) and benzene compounds (14). At the end of storage, 131 compounds were detected in control seaweeds, including 18 aldehydes, 28 alcohols, 23 ketones, 14 hydrocarbons and 13 benzene compounds, and 164 compounds in HPP-treated seaweeds, including 23 aldehydes, 31 alcohols, 19 ketones, 23 hydrocarbons and 15 benzene compounds. Increases in the levels of alcohols, benzene compounds and S-compounds and decreases in hydrocarbons, aldehydes and acids were recorded during storage of some control seaweeds, and increases in the levels of alcohols, acids and N-compounds and decreases in aldehydes, ketones and furans during storage of some HPP-treated seaweeds. Odour acceptance fell below rejection threshold as early as on day 15 for control U. lactuca while it remained acceptable until day 60 for control H. elongata and until day 180 for all the HPP-treated seaweeds. HPP treatment at 400 to 600 MPa for 5 min, in combination with refrigerated storage, is a useful tool for seaweed preservation, given its beneficial effects on microbial quality and sensory characteristics.
