An Examination of the Patterns of Substance Use in Activity Spaces and Their Relationship to Problematic Use

During adolescence, adolescents are given more freedom to independently interact with a variety of social contexts. The eco-developmental model suggests that the activity spaces where adolescents spend their time affect substance-use behaviors beyond peer influences, and that the relationships may differ based on the adolescent’s demographic characteristics. This study examines adolescent patterns of reported substance use across activity spaces to determine whether the patterns of use are related to problematic substance use, and whether the relationships differ based on the participants’ race. Cross-sectional survey data from the study, Drug Use Among Young American Indians: Epidemiology and Prediction, 1993-2006 and 2009-2013, were used. Five patterns of adolescent alcohol use and six patterns of adolescent drug use in activity spaces were identified. There were significant differences in the relationship between class membership and problematic substance use by race, suggesting that contexts may be interacting with an adolescent’s race to influence use.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD), due to the multifactorial damage associated with alcohol (ethanol) consumption and metabolism, is one of the most prevalent liver diseases in the United States. The liver is the primary site of ethanol metabolism and is subsequently injured due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), acetaldehyde, and metabolic stress. Building evidence suggests that dihydromyricetin (DHM), a bioactive flavonoid isolated from Hovenia dulcis, provides hepatoprotection by enhancing ethanol metabolism in the liver by maintaining hepatocellular bioenergetics, reductions of oxidative stress, and activating lipid oxidation pathways. The present study investigates the utility of DHM on hepatic mitochondrial biogenesis via activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/Sirtuin (Sirt)-1/PPARG coactivator 1 (PGC)-1 alpha signaling pathway. We utilized a forced drinking ad libitum study that chronically fed 30% ethanol to male C57BL/61 mice over 8 weeks and induced ALD pathology. We found that chronic ethanol feeding resulted in the suppression of AMPK activation and cytoplasmic Sirt-1 and mitochondrial Sirt-3 expression, effects that were reversed with daily DHM administration (5 mg/kg; intraperitoneally [i.p.]). Chronic ethanol feeding also resulted in hepatic hyperacetylation of PGC-1 alpha, which was improved with DHM administration and its mediated increase of Sirt-1 activity. Furthermore, ethanol-fed mice were found to have increased expression of mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), reduced mitochondrial content as assessed by mitochondrial DNA to nuclear DNA ratios, and significantly lower levels of hepatic ATP. In contrast, DHM administration significantly increased TFAM expression, hepatic ATP concentrations, and induced mitochondrial expression of respiratory complex III and V. In total, this work demonstrates a novel mechanism of DHM that improves hepatic bioenergetics, metabolic signaling, and mitochondrial viability, thus adding to the evidence supporting the use of DHM for treatment of ALD and other metabolic disorders. One-year Follow-Up Results with Hydrogel Implant in Therapy of Hallux Rigidus: Case Series with 44 Patients

Background The Cartiva implant (CI) is being increasingly used in the surgical therapy of hallux rigidus. Despite a growing number of studies, numerous questions regarding patient selection remain unanswered. Patients and Methods As part of a retrospective case series with prospective follow-up (average follow-up period: 12 months), a total of 44 patients (male/female = 16/28; mean age at the time of surgery: 55.4 years) with 44 CI were analysed (VAS, EFAS-, AOFAS-score). Using a correlation analysis and a machine learning algorithm, risk factors for therapy failure were investigated. Results The overall survival rate of the CI was 93% at 12 months. The VAS, EFAS and AOFAS scores showed a significant improvement in comparison to the preoperative condition. The mobility of the metatarsophalangeal joint showed no increase. Patients with a medium osteoarthritis grade and a medium level of clinical restraint showed the greatest improvement in relation to their preoperative condition. Conclusion The CI can be seen as an effective therapy for hallux rigidus. Nonetheless, realistic patient expectations must be communicated.

Japan has been recognized as having successfully controlled the spread of COVID-19. This study aims to gather insights to combat the spread of infection in our daily lives by observing our purchasing behavior. We use point of sales (POS) data from supermarkets, convenience stores, home centers, drug stores, and electronics retail stores for a nationwide analysis. Our analysis revealed the following. First, the Japanese actively prevented the spread of infection by voluntarily wearing masks, using alcohol-based disinfectants, and gargling. Second, they willingly stayed home during the semi-lockdown. Third, they continued to purchase infection prevention essentials during periods of both low and high levels of infection. We conclude that continuing to wear masks, wash and sanitize hands, and gargle, along with spending more time at home to maintain safe distancing, will be effective in reducing the spread of the virus and combatting the pandemic. Finally, infections and deaths were primarily concentrated in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Kansai region, where the nature of the spread of the infection was different from that in small and middle-sized prefectures.

The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the unique explanatory role of alcohol use motives above the effects of each other, using a multiple mediation model, for the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptomatology and problematic alcohol use among a young ethno-racially diverse sample of college students with current (past-month) alcohol use. Participants were 454 college students (81.72% female, Mage = 22.46, SD = 4.71). Results indicated that coping motives significantly explained the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and alcohol consumption (past year), risky drinking, and recent alcohol use (past month) as behavioral indices of problematic drinking after controlling for the variance accounted for by recent cannabis use, smoking, and anxiety and depressive symptoms (with small to medium effect sizes). These findings are discussed in terms of the development of specialized treatments to specifically target coping oriented alcohol use motives in the context of obsessive-compulsive symptoms among young adults with clinically significant OCD symptoms and comorbid problematic alcohol use.

Meanwhile, a simple surface crosslinking technology was applied to prevent leakage of PEG during the long-term service, and improve the thermal stability and tensile strength of the obtained crosslinked PCF (CPCF). The CPCF-50 shows the optimal morphological structure and exhibits the a relative high latent heat of 72.3 J/g. Owing to the confinement effect, CPCF exhibits robust thermal, chemical, and morphological stability with respect to 1000 thermal cycling. The CPCF also shows exceptional temperature regulation capability. The thermoregualting times of heating and freezing processes of CPCF-50 are 59.0% and 89.5% longer than those of the control and CPCF-0, respectively. Therefore, the eco-friendly and cost-effective prepared CPCF in this work, which exhibits relatively high latent heat and long-term reliability, paves a new way for the large-scale production of phase change fiber for thermal energy storage application.

For many foods that undergo thermal treatment, the generation of numerous process-induced compounds has strong implications for food quality and safety. Today, increasing attention is payed to the generation and occurrence of particular classes of newly formed compounds in processed foods for their potential health implication. It is therefore of the utmost importance to monitor the process with fit-for-purpose methods that are appropriate for use in quality control or in research and innovation. Since many quality-related compounds are volatile, there is a need for robust methods that can quantify a broad range of volatile markers and are applicable to on-line monitoring. To meet this need, an original and reliable method based on thermal desorption has been developed for the quantification of volatile compounds sampled on-line by sorbent tubes. For the first time, this method combines in-tube calibration and deuterated standard addition. Ten volatile compounds that are likely to form during heat processing of food (i.e. baking of cereal products), were chosen as target analytes for their relevance to food quality and their different physicochemical properties: 3-methylbutanal, pyrazine, 2-methylpyrazine, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 2,6-dimethylpyrazine, acetic acid, furfural, 5-methylfurfural, furfuryl alcohol and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The key steps in the analytical procedure were optimized and carefully characterized in terms of recovery, repeatability and reliability. The TD-GC-MS method displayed good linearity over extended ranges for all compounds (R-2: 0.9950 to 0.8880) with low limits of quantification (LOQs) ranging from 0.0141 to 11.5 ng. The matrix effect was negligible for most compounds, except for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (21.5%), the most polar and least volatile compound. The method was applied to determining process-induced compounds generated during the baking of a model cake and sampled from baking vapors at three different times during the heat treatment. Of all the compounds extracted, the target analytes exhibited concentrations spread over very broad ranges. This highly sensitive method could therefore be used for the early quantification of relevant markers during the processing of food matrices, for quality or mitigation purposes. Quantitative TD-GC-MS with in-tube calibration and isotope standard addition is particularly well-suited for applications where an accurate determination is required of both trace level and major volatile compounds over time. This method may therefore be relevant for monitoring either industrial or domestic food processes (e.g. baking, frying, roasting), for multi-residue analyses linked to quality and safety, or reaction kinetics for multi-response modeling. It can also be transferable to emerging non-food applications.

Whereas, the use of chemical dyes as an indicator in smart packaging is not suitable for food packaging because of their high toxicity and harmful effects on human health and the environment. Hence, the researchers are focused on natural pigments derived from plants and food waste as indicating substance in biodegradable packaging and also for the valorization of food waste. Scope and approach: This paper summarizes the research on the utilization of naturally derived food- and food waste-based pigments (anthocyanins, curcumin, betalains, carotenoids, chlorophyll, brazilin, quercetin, etc.) with biopolymeric matrices (starch, cellulose, chitin, gums, agar, etc.) to fabricate smart biodegradable films, for effective monitoring of spoilage and quality of meat products, seafood, milk, and others. Key Findings and Conclusions: The results show that the smart packaging material developed by the biopolymers with plant-based pigment has the potential to replace the traditional plastic packaging materials. The extracted from food and food waste act as an indicator in smart packaging and promotes the valorization of food waste. The biodegradable packaging is economical, safe, non-toxic, sensitive, and natural pigments act as a quality indicator in packaging systems. Further, these packaging films can be optimized and commercialized and to be employed as active and intelligent packaging for visual quality evaluation of fresh food products.

Genetic variation in the prebiotic carbohydrate and mineral composition of kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) adapted to an organic cropping system

Kale is a nutrient-rich leafy green that is mostly grown in conventional agricultural systems. The demand for organic kale has increased in the U.S.; however, cultivars bred for conventional production are not suited to organic production in terms of yield and nutritional quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic variation in biomass, prebiotic carbohydrates, and minerals of 18 commercial cultivars and 35 PI accessions of kale adapted to the organic system. Significant genetic variation in both prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals was noted in both kale cultivars and PI accessions. In the kale cultivars, leaf biomass ranged from 41.4-271.2 g/plant, with kale cultivar Frizzy Joe being the highest and Fizz the lowest. A single 100-g serving from these kale cultivars provides mineral micronutrients (20-314 mg K; 95-539 mg Ca; 20-67 mg Mg; 13-87 mg P; 0.4-3.1 mg Fe; 0.3-0.9 mg Zn; 0.4-1.9 mg Mn; 20-1030 mu g Cu; and 0-940 mu g Se) and prebiotic carbohydrates, including sugar alcohols (1.7-26.9 mg), simple sugars (0.03-334 mg), and raffinose and fructooligosaccharides (0-11.2 mg). Compared to the commercial cultivars, the kale accessions had higher concentrations of minerals, except for magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn), and prebiotic carbohydrates, except for sucrose and verbascose + kestose. In the commercial cultivars, heritability estimates for prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals were relatively low except for sugar alcohols, Mg, and zinc (Zn). In the kale accessions, heritability estimates of glucose, fructose, potassium (K), and selenium (Se) were high. Overall, significant genetic variation exists among kale commercial cultivars and germplasm for prebiotic carbohydrates and minerals, indicating the nutritional quality of kale in organic production can be further improved by germplasm selection.

Volatile compounds and odour characteristics of five edible seaweeds preserved by high pressure processing: Changes during refrigerated storage

Edible seaweeds Chondrus crispus, Codium fragile, Himanthalia elongata, Ulva lactuca and Undaria pinnatifida, without any treatment (control seaweeds), were stored at 4 degrees C for 15, 30, 60, 15 and 30 days, respectively, until microbial counts exceeded 7 log cfu/g. High pressure processed (HPP) seaweeds, treated at 400 or 600 MPa for 5 min on day 2 after collection, were held at 4 degrees C until day 180. At the start of storage, 133 volatile compounds were detected in control seaweeds, with 89, 31, 45, 79 and 69 compounds found in C. crispus, C. fragile, H. elongata, U. lactuca and U. pinnatifida, respectively. Chemical groups including the highest number of compounds were aldehydes (24), alcohols (23), ketones (18), hydrocarbons (17) and benzene compounds (14). At the end of storage, 131 compounds were detected in control seaweeds, including 18 aldehydes, 28 alcohols, 23 ketones, 14 hydrocarbons and 13 benzene compounds, and 164 compounds in HPP-treated seaweeds, including 23 aldehydes, 31 alcohols, 19 ketones, 23 hydrocarbons and 15 benzene compounds. Increases in the levels of alcohols, benzene compounds and S-compounds and decreases in hydrocarbons, aldehydes and acids were recorded during storage of some control seaweeds, and increases in the levels of alcohols, acids and N-compounds and decreases in aldehydes, ketones and furans during storage of some HPP-treated seaweeds. Odour acceptance fell below rejection threshold as early as on day 15 for control U. lactuca while it remained acceptable until day 60 for control H. elongata and until day 180 for all the HPP-treated seaweeds. HPP treatment at 400 to 600 MPa for 5 min, in combination with refrigerated storage, is a useful tool for seaweed preservation, given its beneficial effects on microbial quality and sensory characteristics.
