Different diseases and disorders that affect the kidneys include, but are not limited to, glomerulonephritis, diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease, kidney stones, renal fibrosis, sepsis, and renal cell carcinoma. Kidney disease tends to develop over many years, making it difficult to identify until much later when kidney function is severely impaired and undergoing kidney failure. Although conservative care, symptom management, medication, dialysis, transplantation, and aggressive renal cancer therapy are some of the current strategies/approaches to kidney disease treatment, new preventative targeted therapies are needed. Epidemiol. studies have suggested that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with health benefits including protection against kidney disease and renal cancer. Resveratrol, a polyphenol found in grapes and berries, has been reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and anti-cancer properties. The current review summarizes the existing in vitro and in vivo animal and human studies examining the nephroprotective effects of resveratrol.

Metabolites can mediate species interactions and the assembly of microbial communities. However, how these chems. relate to the assembly processes and co-occurrence patterns of diazotrophic assemblages in root-associated soils remains largely unknown. Here, we examined the diversity and assembly of diazotrophic communities and further deciphered their links with metabolites on Tibetan Plateau. We found that the distribution of sugars and organic acids in the root-associated soils was significantly correlated with the richness of diazotrophs. The presence of these two soil metabolites explains the variability in diazotrophic community compositions The differential concentrations of these metabolites were significantly linked with the distinctive abundances of diazotrophic taxa in same land types dominated by different plants or dissimilar soils by same plants. The assembly of diazotrophic communities is subject to deterministic ecol. processes, which are widely modulated by the variety and amount of sugars and organic acids. Organic acids, for instance, 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid and citric acid, were effective predictors of the characteristics of diazotrophic assemblages across desert habitats. Diazotrophic co-occurrence networks tended to be more complex and connected within different land types covered by the same plant species. The concentrations of multiple sugars and organic acids were coupled significantly with the distribution of keystone species, such as Azotobacter, Azospirillum, Bradyrhizobium, and Mesorhizobium, in the co-occurrence network. These findings provide new insights into the assembly mechanisms of root-associated diazotrophic communities across the desert ecosystems of the Tibetan Plateau.

As a useful chem., furan can be produced from bio-based chems., such as furfural and furoic acid (FA). There were few reports on the preparation of furan from bio-based C6 aldaric acids. Herein, a new method was developed to produce furan from D-glucaric acid (GA) without transition metals, and nearly 80% yield of furan was produced in the water/toluene biphasic system with SnCl4 at 200°C in 2 h. The 3-Hydroxy-2-pyrone (3-HP) and FA were proved to be the key intermediates in the formation of furan from GA, and the reaction pathway was proposed to be GA→ 3-HP→ FA→ furan based on the kinetic study, model substrate reaction, and isotope labeling experiments SnCl4 gave the highest furan yield among the common acid catalysts, and the contrast experiments suggested that H+, Cl- and Sn4+ all have promoting effect on GA conversion to furan. This method was also applicable with other C6 aldaric acids.

Metabolomics approaches recently applied to stem cell characterization could help identify new biochem. markers involved in osteogenic differentiation. Combined intra- and extracellular metabolite profiling was performed by liquid chromatog.-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) on human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) undergoing osteogenic differentiation in vitro. Using a combination of univariate and multivariate analyses, changes in metabolite and nutrient concentration were monitored in cultures under osteogenic treatment over 10 days. A subset of differentially detected compounds was identified in differentiating cells, suggesting a direct link to metabolic processes involved in osteogenic response. These results highlight new metabolite candidates as potential biomarkers to monitor stem cell differentiation towards the bone lineage.

A review. Despite intensive research, malignant brain tumors are among the most difficult to treat due to high resistance to conventional therapeutic approaches. High-grade malignant gliomas, including glioblastoma and anaplastic astrocytoma, are among the most devastating and rapidly growing cancers. Despite the ability of standard treatment agents to achieve therapeutic concentrations in the brain, malignant gliomas are often resistant to alkylating agents. Resveratrol is a plant polyphenol occurring in nuts, berries, grapes, and red wine. Resveratrol crosses the blood-brain barrier and may influence the central nervous system. Moreover, it influences the enzyme isocitrate dehydrogenase and, more importantly, the resistance to standard treatment via various mechanisms, such as O6-methylguanine methyltransferase. This review summarizes the anticancer effects of resveratrol in various types of brain cancer. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have presented promising results; however, further clin. research is necessary to prove the therapeutic efficacy of resveratrol in brain cancer treatment.

Breast cancer is one of the leading fatal diseases for women worldwide who cannot have surgery typically have to rely on systemic chemotherapy to extend their survival. Doxorubicin (DOX) is one of the most commonly used chemotherapeutic agents against breast cancer, but acquired resistance to DOX can seriously impede the efficacy of chemotherapy, leading to poor prognosis and recurrences of cancer. Resveratrol (RES) is a phytoalexin with pharmacol. antitumor properties, but its underlying mechanisms are not clearly understood in the treatment of DOX-resistant breast cancer. We used cell viability assays, cell scratch tests, and transwell assays combined with Western blotting and immunofluorescent staining to evaluate the effects of RES on chemoresistance and the epithelial-mesenchymal transitions (EMTs) in adriamycin-resistant MCF7/ADR breast cancer cells, and to investigate its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that a treatment of RES combining with DOX effectively inhibited cell growth, suppressed cell migration, and promoted cell apoptosis. RES reversed EMT properties of MCF7/ADR cells by modulating the connection between SIRT1 and β-catenin, which provides a hopeful therapeutic avenue to conquer DOX-resistance and thereby prolong survival rates in breast cancer patients.

This systematic review and meta-anal. of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to summarize the effect of resveratrol intake on weight loss. We searched the following databases until July 2018: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Data were pooled using the inverse variance method and expressed as standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Out of 831 reports, 36 RCTs were eligible for including to our meta-anal. The pooled results, using random-effects model showed that resveratrol supplementation significantly decreased body weight (SMD = -0.17; 95% CI, -0.33, -0.01; P=0.03; I2: 62.6), body mass index (BMI) (SMD = -0.20; 95% CI, -0.35, -0.05; P=0.01; I2: 60.6), fat mass (SMD = -0.32; 95% CI, -0.62, -0.03; P=0.03; I2: 77.9) and waist circumference (WC) (SMD = -0.42; 95% CI, -0.68, -0.16; P=0.001; I2: 75.2), and significantly increased lean mass (SMD=1.21; 95% CI, 0.75, 1.67; P<0.001; I2: 87.6). We found no significant effect of resveratrol administration on leptin (SMD = -0.20; 95% CI, -0.68, 0.27; P=0.40; I2: 85.3) and adiponectin levels (SMD=0.08; 95% CI, -0.39, 0.55; P=0.74; I2: 91.0). Resveratrol supplementation significantly decreased body weight in obese patients (SMD -0.43; 95% CI, -0.60, -0.26) compared with other diseases (SMD 0.02; 95% CI, -0.29, 0.33), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (SMD -0.17; 95% CI, -0.37, 0.02). Overall, the current meta-anal. demonstrated that resveratrol intake significantly reduced weight, BMI, WC and fat mass, and significantly increased lean mass, but did not affect leptin and adiponectin levels. Nanomaterials (NMs) have demonstrated enormous potential to improve agricultural production Ten mg L-1 of customized manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) NMs was selected as the optimal dose based on its outstanding effects on promoting tomato flowering and production After the foliar application before flowering, MnFe2O4 NMs increased the leaf chlorophyll content by 20 percent, and significantly upregulated the expressions of ferredoxin, PsaA, and PsbA in leaves, likely by serving as an electron donor, leading to a significant increase in photosynthesis efficiency by 13.3%. Long distance transport of sucrose was then confirmed by the upregulation of sucrose transporter SUT1 and SUT2 in NM-treated leaves and meristems. The genes associated with gibberellin biosynthesis, including GA20ox2, GA20ox3, and SIGAST, and a flowering induction gene SFT, were also significantly upregulated. Importantly, the flowering time was 13 days earlier by MnFe2O4 NMs over the control. At the reproductive stage, MnFe2O4 NMs increased pollen activity and ovule size, leading to the significant increase in fruit number per plant, single fruit weight, and fruit weight per plant by 50%, 30%, and 75%, resp. Metabolically, a significant increase of glucose-6-phosphate, phenylalanine, rutin, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), as well as a significant decrease of tomatine and methionine, demonstrates an increased nutritional value of the tomato fruits. A verified companion field experiment showed an increase of 84.1% in total tomato production with the MnFe2O4 NM amendment. These findings provide support for the early flowering and yield improvement in nano-enabled agricultural systems.
