Poly(Me methacrylate) (PMMA) was loaded with 2-acetyloxy-4-(trifluoromethyl) benzoic acid (triflusal) by a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) impregnation method. The main objective of this work was to provide information for the infusion of additives into nonporous polymeric substrates for design of sustained release systems. Chem. and H-bonding interactions between the matrix and the infused drug were evaluated together with the impregnated drug stability. The composition of the obtained systems was characterized by 1H magnetic nuclear resonance and liquid chromatog. The microstructure of the impregnated matrix was studied using thermal anal. The affinity of the solute to the polymer was explored via attenuated total reflection (ATR)-FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. Finally, an in vitro elution method coupled with high-performance liquid chromatog. was used to evaluate the release behavior of prepared formulations. Loadings of ca. 20 weight% of active agent in PMMA were obtained, while the drug crystallization was avoided. From a pharmaceutical point of view, the impregnated samples had an excellent potential for the preparation of sustained formulations, since the delivery profiles were consistent with keeping stable levels of the drug over a long period of time.

Heating the latter in CH2Cl2 with KF and a catalytic amount of HO2CCF3 gave the corresponding fluoridate (CF3CH2O)2P(O)F in 84% yield. Treatment of bis(trifluoroethyl) phosphite with Br2 or I2 gave the bromidate (CF3CH2O)2P(O)Br and iodidate (CF3CH2O)2P(O)I in 51 and 46% yield, resp. The iodidate is the 1st dialkyl phosphoroiodidate to have been isolated and characterized properly-its discovery lags behind the 1st isolation of a dialkyl phosphorochloridate by over 130 yr. The fluoroalkyl phosphoryl compounds are generally more stable than known unfluorinated counterparts.

Aims: The conventional management adopted in many Mediterranean olive orchards makes them more vulnerable to climate change and attacks by pathogens, due to the decreased chem. plant defenses. In this scenario, a metabolomic anal. was carried out on the xylem sap (Xsap) of olive plants (Olea europaea L.) grown in the Salento peninsula (Italy). Trials were carried out in two olive groves, one organically and one conventionally managed (controls), successively both converted to sustainable management (i.e. frequent light pruning, soil and foliar fertilization, cover crops). The Xsap was extracted from the shoots of olive plants using a Scholander pressure chamber pressurized with N2 and gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry metabolite profiling was performed in the Xsap. An untargeted gas chromatog. mass spectrometry (GC-MS) based metabolomic anal. of primary metabolites (including underivatized volatiles) of the Xsap revealed relative abundances of 153 identified metabolites and 336 unknown features across the 12 samples from four groups of samples. Among them, more than half were involved in the primary metabolism Many of the compounds with increased levels under sustainable management (such as amino acids, soluble sugars, sugar alcs.) have a well-known role as osmoprotectants or are involved in plant defense, growth and development during stress or recovery stages. Fusarium avenaceum, Botrytis cinerea, Penicillium expansum, and Neofabraea vagabunda, represent postharvest diseases which cause significant apple losses. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the effects of organic essential oils (EOs) (Thymus vulgaris, Lavandula angustifolia, Rosmarinus officinalis) against apple pathogens both in vitro and in vivo, as an integrated management tool. By GC-MS anal. a total of 101 compounds principally belonging to the groups of terpenes and terpenoids were detected in the extracted EOs. In vitro results showed T. vulgaris as the most active EO, both as agar infusion or biofumigant. Through agar infusion, starting from the lowest concentration (0.2 mL L-1), T. vulgaris reduced by 74.9%, 86.1%, 66.9%, and 45.7% F. avenaceum, B. cinerea, P. expansum, and N. vagabunda mycelial growth, resp.; as biofumigant, it completely inhibited the growth of all the tested mycelial pathogens. Application of EOs on apples through dipping treatment displayed some potential to inhibit the above-mentioned pathogens, especially by T. vulgaris and L. angustifolia. The efficacy of these organic EOs is probably strictly correlated to the chem. composition

The cross-linked hierarchical structure in biol. systems provides insight into the development of innovative material structures. Specifically, the sarcoplasmic reticulum muscle is able to transmit elec. impulses in skeletal muscle due to its cross-linked hierarchical tubular cell structure. Inspired by the cross-linked tubular cell structure, we designed and built chem. cross-links between the carbon nanotubes within the carbon nanotube yarn (CNT yarn) structure by an esterification reaction. Consequently, compared with the pristine CNT yarn, its elec. conductivity dramatically enhanced 348%, from 557 S/cm to 1950 S/cm. Furthermore, when applied with three voltages, the electro-thermal temperature of esterified CNT yarn reached 261°C, much higher than that of pristine CNT yarn (175°C). In addition, the esterified CNT yarn exhibits a linear and stable piezo-resistive response, with a 158% enhanced gauge factor (the ratio of elec. resistance changing to strain change ∼1.9). The superconductivity, flexibility, and stable sensitivity of the esterified flexible CNT yarn demonstrate its great potential in the applications of intelligent devices, smart clothing, or other advanced composites.

The authors investigated the extraction of the plant K+ channel KAT1 with different detergents, as an example for how to select detergents for purifying a eukaryotic membrane protein. A KAT1-GFP fusion protein was used to screen a library of 46 detergents for the effective solubilization of intact KAT1. Malolactic fermentation (MLF) is a secondary wine fermentation resulting from lactic acid bacteria (Oenococcus oeni or Lactobacillus plantarum), especially in cool climates. MLF reduces acidity, improves body, mouthfeel, aroma complexity, and stabilizes the wine. Nevertheless, the traditional MLF using single culture is often associated with stuck fermentation, increased volatile acidity and color loss in wine. Thus, studies on mixed blend of L. plantarum and O. oeni to improve chem. and sensory profiles are gaining importance. The first study on different timing of inoculation of dual malo-lactic culture for the vinification of Shiraz wine aims to understand interactions between the wine cultures (Saccharomyces cerevisiae AAV2, L. plantarum Lp 1 and O. oeni Oo 1). The wines were compared based on chem. properties, phenolic and volatile profiles, and sensory anal. The study highlighted that early or mid-inoculated MLF wines have higher anthocyanins, flavonoids, syringol, esters, vanillate derivatives, benzaldehyde, and free terpenes compared to traditional MLF wines. The wines were rated high for purple red color, tannin, body, and overall acceptability. Hence, it was concluded that the inoculation of Lp 1 and Oo 1, either after 7 or 14 days of alc. fermentation by yeast AAV2, yield the desired quality Shiraz wine.
