The design of new dual-function inhibitors simultaneously preventing hydrate formation and corrosion is a relevant issue for the oil and gas industry. The structure-property relationship for a promising class of hybrid inhibitors based on waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) was studied in this work. Variation of diethanolamines differing in the size and branching of N-substituents (Me, Bu, and tert-butyl), as well as the amount of these groups, allowed the structure of polymer mols. to be preset during their synthesis. To assess the hydrate and corrosion inhibition efficiency of developed reagents pressurized rocking cells, electrochem. and weight-loss techniques were used. A distinct effect of these variables altering the hydrophobicity of obtained compounds on their target properties was revealed. Polymers with increased content of diethanolamine fragments with n- or tert-Bu as N-substituent (WPU-6 and WPU-7, resp.) worked as dual-function inhibitors, showing nearly the same efficiency as com. ones at low concentration (0.25 wt%), with the branched one (tert-butyl; WPU-7) turning out to be more effective as a corrosion inhibitor. Com. kinetic hydrate inhibitor Luvicap 55 W and corrosion inhibitor Armohib CI-28 were taken as reference samples. Preliminary study reveals that WPU-6 and WPU-7 polyurethanes as well as Luvicap 55 W are all poorly biodegradable compounds; BODt/CODcr (ratio of BOD and COD) value is 0.234 and 0.294 for WPU-6 and WPU-7, resp., compared to 0.251 for com. kinetic hydrate inhibitor Luvicap 55 W. Oxidative stress is considered the main cause of cellular damage in a number of neurodegenerative disorders. One suitable ways to prevent cell damage is the use of the exogenous antioxidant capacity of natural products, such as microalgae. In the present study, four microalgae extracts, isolated from the Persian Gulf, were screened to analyze their potential antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging using ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP methods. The methanolic extracts (D1M) of green microalgae derived from Chlorella sp. exhibited potent free radical scavenging activity. In order to characterize microalgae species, microscopic observations and anal. of the expression of 18S rRNA were performed. The antioxidant and neuroprotective effects of D1M on H2O2-induced toxicity in PC12 cells were investigated. The results demonstrated that D1M significantly decreased the release of nitric oxide (NO), formation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), whereas it enhanced the content of glutathione (GSH), and activity of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), and catalase (CAT) in PC12 cells exposed to H2O2. The pretreatment of D1M improved cell viability as measured by the MTT assay and invert microscopy, reduced cell apoptosis as examined by flow cytometry anal., increased mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and diminished caspase-3 activity. The GC/MS anal. revealed that D1M ingredients have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), 2,4-di-tert-butyl-phenol (2,4-DTBP), and phytol. These results suggested that Chlorella sp. extracts have strong potential to be applied as neuroprotective agents, for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. To improve the aroma of kiwi wine through the utilization of Wickerhamomyces anomalus, kiwi juice was fermented using a selected W. anomalus strain in pure culture and mixed fermentations with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which was inoculated simultaneously and sequentially. The physicochem. indexes, volatile compounds and aroma properties of the kiwi wines were assessed. The study suggested that the ethanol, color indexes and organic acids of the wines were closely related to the method of inoculation. Compared with the pure S. cerevisiae fermentation, the mixed fermentations produced more varieties and concentrations of volatiles. The sequential fermentations increased the concentrations of esters and terpenes, improving the flower and sweet fruit notes of the wines. The simultaneous inoculation enhanced the contents of esters and aldehydes, intensifying the flower, sweet and sour fruit of the wines. Partial least-squares regression anal. showed that esters and terpenes contributed greatly to the flower and sweet fruit aroma, whereas aldehydes were the major contributors to the sour note. Based on our results, the mixed fermentations not only enriched the types and concentrations of volatiles, but also had better sensory properties. However, there is no direct convincing evidence proving that manipulating gut microbiota homeostasis could regulate muscle metabolic disorder caused by chemotherapy. Here, we investigate the potential role of gut microbiota in the regulation of the muscle metabolism in 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu)-induced malnutrition rat model. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups (n = 8/group): control group and 5-Fu group. In the 5-Fu group, rats received 5-Fu (40 mg/kg/day) by i.p. injection for 4 days, and all rats were raised for 8 days. Nutritional status, muscle function, muscle metabolites, and gut microbiota were assessed. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was applied to explore the potential regulation of gut microbiota on muscle metabolism 5-Fu-treated rats exhibited loss of body weight and food intake compared to control group. 5-Fu decreased the levels of total protein and albumin in serum, and significantly increased the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in muscle tissue. Rats that received 5-Fu displayed concurrent reduction of muscle function and fiber size. Moreover, 5-Fu group showed a distinct profile of gut microbiota compared to control group, including the relative lower abundance of Firmicutes and a higher abundance of Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia. Fourteen differential muscle metabolites were identified between two groups, which were mainly related to glycolysis, amino acid metabolism, and TCA cycle pathway. Furthermore, fecal transplantation from healthy rats improved nutritional status and muscle function in 5-Fu-treated rats. Notably, FMT inhibited the inflammatory response in muscle, and reversed the changes of several differential muscle metabolites and energy metabolism in 5-Fu-treated rats. Study demonstrated that gut microbiota played an important role in the regulation of muscle metabolism and promoting muscle energy production in 5-Fu-induced malnutrition rats, suggesting the potential attenuation of chemotherapy-induced muscle wasting by manipulating gut microbiota homeostasis.
